The Mounts are Useless
You know what could’ve been a better feature than mounts?
A build template system so we can swap builds and gear faster.
Or gvg
But…ya know…mounts
Not sure what the obsession with Build templates is. I mean they would be a nice convenience but they would save all of about half a minute.
Half a minute, hundreds of clicks and need to google if you forgot some detail.
I don’t even understand why so many players wanted them, are they suppose to compensate for something? But anyway here are the reasons why they are useless:
1) Waypoints are faster.
Which I point out with insufferable smugness is something I said since the leaks came out and for a fact even ANET agrees with me here. How do I know that? Simple the Crystal Oasis is only about 33-50% bigger than Frostgorge Sound, however Frostgorge Sound has 16 waypoints while Crystal Oasis has only 3. So it’s obvious you need a source of fast transportation when you have so few waypoints in such a big area, but it doesn’t really give much use in the old areas as they have a high concentration of waypoints. So in other words it’s a forced necessity.
Now someone is going to pull out this BS argument that there can’t be so many waypoints in the Crystal Desert because the Asura didn’t have time to set the WP network there properly. Well ok but what about the newly discovered places in Heart of Maguuma like Tarir or Rata Novus? They obviously had no link before their discovery either yet they have their own waypoints.
Still regardless of the argument on the lack of waypoints their lack is the main reason the mounts get their use from.2) They do nothing new.
Honestly we already have lots of masteries that do exactly the same stuff as them i.e. jumping over gaps, reaching high places: Updrafts, Leylines, Bouncing Mushrooms, Nuhoch Wallows, Rift Traveler, Explosive Launch, Thermal Propulsion, Oakheart’s Reach. We can already do all that the mounts can do ok? Heck even normal Gliding would work if this was for real, because how often do you see gaps which have edges on both sides that are level? But if they were not the Raptor could only jump over them from the higher edge, while from lower it wouldn’t make it just as Gliding can’t.
The only reason we need them is because HoT masteries are useless in the Crystal Desert.
And I find it a real lack of creativity that all 4 mounts will have separate masteries.
Why couldnt we instead have a mastery that is focused on the magic portals from GW1?
I mean even one of the mastery points requires solving one of these nostalgia puzzles. These portals however would work in a way that they have many different exit points and our mastery rank would decide which exits we can and cannot use and be required to solve higher tier puzzles for the portals.
Which would also be a good replacement for the waypoints as it would work kinda like the temple waypoints in Siren’s Landing.3) It’s not a realistic approach.
If there is one thing that the battle with Zhaitan taught me is that thechnology is the answer. And I know for a fact that mobile vehicles do exist in this universe – there is a mission in Orr where you guard tanks and the HoT adventure Drone Race is where we drive vehicles.
So if this was for real I would ask the Pact to get me a Desert Buggy or something like that for my upcoming trip to the Crystal Desert.4) They don’t fly.
Really if we got a mount that flies that would not only be far more exciting, but that mount would be able to get around all the obstacles the other ones can.So no I’m not excited for the mounts, I’m just really curious why would ANET give in and listen to the community on this one? Because there is really no point in this game for them.
1. There’s less waypoints in the PoF maps.
Furthermore, even in the old maps you still have to run from a WP to your final destination, even if it’s not a long distance. Whether your running to a world boss, guild missions, etc.
2. Mounts can perform their mobility skill whenever, while updrafts, leyline gliding etc. are only at certain parts of the map. The raptor’s leap isn’t only used to cross canyons, but just as a general mobility skill to go faster. Also, mounts have a base movement speed boost.
Additionally, mounts bring new visual customization. It’s a new way to tailor your character’s style and look.
3. Lore reasons, really?!? Why would someone bring a dagger to a gunfight? How comes I can hide my helmet but still get the extra protection? It’s a game, don’t expect it to be realistic.
4. Flying mounts are really hard to balance and develop. It would be like complaining about gliding: How comes I can ONLY glide, and not just fly? Because that could easily break the game!
/s
I can give you two scenarios that mounts are always helpful. Farming nodes and map exploration. In both you’re not really Waypointing around and the mount will increase efficiency. So they have a place for people who do both.
For farming nodes they may actually not be so helpful, due to the “dismount to farm/need to remount later” mechanic.
But mount summoning is instantaneous. Like, I was walking, pressed my keybind, didn’t even stop. It shouldn’t interfere with gathering, etc unless someone really gets sick of pressing that button. (And they will, claiming it’s “killing keyboards” or whatever.)

I suspect we will see mounts added to the gem store.
This game has always suffered from poor choice of items there. Ugly cosmetics and gambling boxes.
If they refuse to put out cosmetics with no butt-flap, they need something to make money with… and mounts will probably be it.
MMO player have an obsession with collecting an item that you can only use one of at a time… so they could add a dozen mounts to the gem store and get half the player base, or more, to buy the majority of them…
And it’s a convenient way to avoid having to make butt-flap-free cosmetics, since this MMO seems paranoid about us seeing our rear ends…
I don’t think they serve any other actual purpose…
JAH Bless – Equal Rights and Justice for all.
Justice And Honor – Tarnished Coast.
My first thought about mounts was that a sylvari should be afraid to sit on a giant rabbit.
I am pretty neutral about mounts in general, but events akin to Mad Max II or Mad Max: Fury Road would indeed catch my interest.
Reasons mounts are/are not useless:
blahblahblahblahblah…
Don’t get me wrong I am not trolling you. There has literally been so much said both for and against mounts since the dawn of GW1 that it has all run together into some unrecognizable blob.
With the little bit of experience I had over the weekend with them, I discovered that other than moving slightly faster than a dead run, they’re kind of fun. They won’t replace waypoints, nor will they take the place of other ways of travel, but they give yet another option. They’re dyeable, and the race was a blast. A few of my friends and I spent a good couple of hours just racing.
Regardless of whether a player wants to see mounts or not, they are here now. They might indeed be useless, but they give those who were clamoring for them what they wanted.
Cheers!
I like mounts to be honest. They look great and will be a great way to explore without spamming swiftness and hearing “I can outrun a centaur” all day long.
Also that bunny jump will be great to compleat the map again.
Like some others who posted here, I was a hard no on mounts before the demo. The demo did soften my stance on them a bit, but I still have reservations in terms of map design and what someone aptly called the “zoo” appearance.
Map Design
I worry that fast/reliable/summon-them-anywhere mounts will alter Anet’s map design philosophy. When I first came to GW2 I was shocked to find out there were no mounts. I quickly found out that Anet’s map design was so rich and dense that traveling on foot was really worth the time for a new player, just to get a good look at the world. Even as an endgamer I still appreciate walking through many locations that I’ve visited before, all while having the option to waypoint if I’m in a hurry.
I just don’t want to see maps ballooning in size with empty, meaningless, or otherwise poorly designed space just for mounts to zip through.
The Zoo… ugh
Few things look uglier in-game to me than a scene where a ton of different players are standing around in a small space, all on their weird motley assembly of mounts.
Granted, there is already some of this to an extent, what with all the different glittery particle-spam gear you can see amassed on players in one place (the old pvp lobby comes to mind). However, adding mounts to that same mix only makes the problem worse, if you saw it as a problem to begin with.
I’m with the folks in this thread who mentioned mount-free zones; that would essentially solve all my issues with the zoo potential. No mounts inside cities and certain towns/outposts would be nice. I’d rather not have to clip my toon through someone else’s smelly mount to reach a vendor, anvil, or crafting station.

So how about reading the whole thing before you reply next time?
mounts = money
gem store skins = money
gem store mount skins = money*money = money²
They did it so that people who wanted mounts would shut up about them already and buy PoF. I agree, GW2 never needed mounts, but there was a ridiculous yet vocal demand for them, so there you go.
At least the dead horse can now rest in peace.
Plot twist: The horse was dead but it was beaten so much that the vast amounts of energy somehow reanimated it. We have a zombie horse now. Congrats.
Additionally out of spite, he warned his living brethren about how crazy you guys are and now you guys will get every mount under the sun imaginable; except for horses.

Forced necessities being not new doesn’t mean they are something good. There are reasons why HoT was generally disliked, you know. Too much verticality, not enough waypoints and too convoluted map design were mentioned mainly in negative context, not a positive one.
If mounts are partially responsible for the reduced number of waypoints in expac, that alone would be a good reason to scrap mounts completely.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
1) Waypoints are faster.
2) They do nothing new.
3) It’s not a realistic approach.
4) They don’t fly.
You have absolutley no clue of what is going on, do you?

1) too much verticality – solved in new maps (more horizontal progression)
2) not enough WP – solved in new maps (faster travel with mounts)
3) convoluted map design – see 1)
I get your point that something that has been there before isn’t necessarily a good thing. But for now it looks like ANet learned from the mistakes they made with the controversal HoT map design. (even though I – and a lot of people I talked to – liked the HoT maps in the end, you just have to get used to the new type of map progression)

1 and 4 are undoubtfully true.
*That waypoints are faster is hopefully an uncontested opinion.
*Levitating over otherwise unpassable terrain is flying only in the most narrow of senses.
Jumping high is also not flying, it is basically preparation for flying if you ask Superman.
Teleporting from one rock to another rock 15 yards ago on the same level of height is as far away from flying as walking over a bridge is.
*I am not sure about reason Nr 2. But if a mushroom can give you the same effect as a rabbit, where is the difference? Not trolling you here, tell me if I miss something.
And realism, yeah well. As Asurahater, I am really glad everytime they get diminished in influence. Maybe Palawa Yoko shares my resentiments and choose to walk by foot or teleport on his own power rather than allow smurfs on his land.^^

It depends on your hardware. Sorry had to say it!

Maybe if you play on the PC of your grandfather and had to type in c:/run when you started GW2^^
I never understand these kinds of threads. So you don’t like mounts and will be unlikely to use them as you see no benefit to do so.
Ok.
So why is it a problem that other people do? Why do you care how other people play the game?
actually I do doubt that waypoints are always faster.
I’m pretty sure running anywhere in Elona, starting from the nearest WP, will often be faster than finding a way to a specific location in tangled depths starting from the (seemingly) nearest WP.

Find the WP once = your suffering ends.
Ride your mount through miles of desert, die by hoping too far with your target already in sight = Your suffering begins again.
Therefore WP>riding

PS: I’m not talking about finding a WP in HoT, but finding your way to a specific location, starting at a waypoint that seems nearer than the few in PoF.
PPS: non existing waypoints can’t be contested :P
(edited by Hyrai.8720)
So a 95% chance to reach something is as good as a 100% chance?
A mount would not have saved you in tangeld depths neither. Navigation wise, this map is a fill for bancruptcy on many levels.
A contested WP is a design desicion that is left from Anets failed attempt to create a really living world. I doubt that we will see lots of them in the future, at least I hope so.

Oh its easy to understand.
People wanted mounts. Or rather, what they think is mounts and how they are supposed to be used.
Mounts in GW2 is glorified jump puzzle transformations, not replacements for waypoints.
TLDR; Slowing game progression is common in mmo’s. Otherwise players blow thru the new content in a few days and leave again. Nothing new. Same with gear gating etc. Players need carrots to chase or they get bored.
If you don’t like mounts, don’t bother with them. Personally I want dino’s that seat 20 like in the Flintstones lol

Arguing with you really gives me a headache, so I’ll try one last time and then give up.
Once you figured out how to use mounts, the chances of reaching your destination in PoF are just as high as they are in HoT.
It’s just that Anet went from obstacles like some kind of labyrinth and tricky updrafts etc. to less waypoints, thus longer (but easier) routes.
in HoT it takes you 10min to figure out a way from the ground to a location 50m higher, in PoF it takes tyou 10min to run a (mostly) linear but longer way with just a few mount-jumps. I really don’t see the problem of less waypoints.

In PoF there will be less WP, similar to Silverwastes, thus WP are no NOT faster than mounts.
How is the Skimmer nothing new? You float over water.
Why should they fly? We have gliders and updrafts and we have mounts with high jumps and far jumps. People hate underwater combat and movement, why would we want air movement? Mechanicly it is the same with the additional z-axis.
(edited by DirtyDan.4759)
Likewise. You won´t win me for the idea that riding is as good as teleporting and I won´t convince you that teleporting is superior to riding, so lets just keep it that way.
Have you mount, I don´t really care. I lose convenience I don´t really need but find useful, you gain a fun feature. I am used to Anet throwing out many things I thought of making GW2 superior to other games, so this does not really surprise or faze me.
As soon as mounts gain the ability to fly though, and I mean fly and not just float forward or teleport a really short distance over some laughable hole in the ground, I am more than ready to join Team Mount, hooray! ^^
Edit:
@DirtyDan
I already explained my point of view on this. Floating is not flying. Floating is another little brother of Flying as Gliding is too, inferior in many aspects. Just because it may be fun or look cool, it´s still inferior to flying.
If you look in the animal kingdom
Dragonfly: can hover, fly forward and some even backward. Superior flyer.
Sparrow: can fast fly forward, make complex maneuvers, unable to hover. Very good flyer.
I would put the Skimmer somewhere in here. Superior to animals that can not really fly but somehow travel through the air, inferior to anything that can really fly.
Flying squirrel: your basic GW2 glider.
Chicken: Can hop and flap, resembles flying a little bit. Poor flyer.

I think you got something wrong over the course of our discussion.
I didn’t say mounts are as good as waypoints, or even better (I do think they are, but I didn’t say it).
I said waypoints are not always faster than mounts.
what costs more, fast travel everywhere even if it’s just 1 waypoint away or a mount?
there are a few reasons why i rather take a mount over waypoints.
- waypoints actually break immersion while mounts add immersion.
- mounts saves a few loading screen compared to waypoints. (not everyone has an SSD HDD)
- it costs absolutely nothing while you do go fast from one place to another
- travel fast while still staying flexible on where to go.
@Hyrai
ok then, I can agree with that. Maybe if you want to reach a special destination right between two waypoints for example.
@Sorudo
If you are ready to accept a rat/smurf combo race that builds Golems and uses lightning or plasma as weapon and on the other hand find waypoints immersion breaking, you are more of an roleplayer than I am.^^

I see that more as:
You die
You waypoint
Without mount you wouldn’t get back to where you were as fast (Regardless of the place)
Waypoints+mounts> just waypoints
Ingame Name: Guardian Erik
How can teleportation be immersion breaking when it is a major part of the plot.
Waypoints+mounts> just waypoints
The question is:
Waypoints vs half-waypoints + mounts
My only issue is how much value players are placing on them. Yes, they’ve been made key to exploration of the maps. I get it. People are just losing their kitten minds over them. Mounts should be a footnote not a major selling point.
How is the Skimmer nothing new? You float over water.
Swimming does not slow characters down or requires you to do anything different from just running. So floating over water is pretty much just a different animation. Now if swimming would slow you down and/or consume stamina then floating over water would be pretty neat.

I believe the Skimmer will allow us to hover over the sulfurous haze, the white desert part of the desolation that instantly kills anyone that touch it. As such it is something new. Maybe it will allow you to hover over lava too, ignoring the damage, which can be good on some places, and also can be considered new.

Anet didn’t have to create mounts because PoF didn’t have enough WP! Anet could have created PoF with plenty of WP. Or they could have created PoF with a combination of the movement masteries we already had like the LS3 maps. But Anet chose to have mounts in PoF and made the maps with less WP because of mounts – not the other way around lol.
I think some people may have lost sight of the fact that this is a game. Mounts are intended to be fun. That is their purpose.
its like saying expensive cars are useless since u can get around with a junk honda civic? OP I wonder what kind of car u are driving, maybe u dont even have a car? lol.
Useless…. No. U say we have waypoints but what happens when your discovering a new map? You can’t teleport across the map in only 1 waypoint. Especially in annoying maps. Tangled depths is one of the most annoying maps….(for me) put a mount in there and can get hps much faster. It’s not about you remember that. It’s about the whole gw2 community. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean other people dont also. Another reason is when New comers from other MMOs came from a MMO that had mounts, Then come into this one and wonder why we have no mounts. In gw1 we did. It’s going to be a problem. They might think it’s outdated. If gw2 is a competitor with eso, ffxix, wow. They needs mounts for people to leave because new players will always compare features like that. If eso has mounts why gw2 doesn’t? Knowing we have waypoints however FFXIV can do the same thing and so can eso. It’s not called waypoints in those game but, they can also teleport. Gw2 has to be updated. That’s why they have mounts. People wanted them. Gw2 gave it. More people love it then dislike it. Most people happy rather then fewer not happy about it.
Mounts > load screens
Mic drop.
I think some people may have lost sight of the fact that this is a game. Mounts are intended to be fun. That is their purpose.
I was firmly embedded in the “No Mounts” camp, but now that they are here, I’m going to use them. Because whether you hate mounts or not, they are now a fact of the game.
Even though I didn’t want mounts do to the fact that I thought they would clutter the environment and were not really needed because of the waypoint system, I plan on enjoying them and having fun with them as you said.
I do understand why people are not happy about having them, however. However, they are here so they might as well get used to them.
tl/dr: Mounts are here whether you like it or not. Might as well learn to like them if you don’t.
I’m personally very excited for mounts and probably will use the waypoints far less as I love running around exploring the maps. I really like what they have done making it a mastery thing and giving the mounts a starting attack skill sort of thing its neat and I cannot wait.
Mounts > load screens
Mic drop.
If mounts could get rid of zone transition loading screens, maybe. Otherwise, a little early for a mic drop.

Maybe I should rethink my stance on mounts after reading this. You already lost me with the word compel.
If a giant rabbit, a teleporter jackal, a hoverboard turned octopus and other animals save me from entering another tangled depths map ever again, I gladly welcome my new mount overlords!^^

waypoints are no different from traveling like in GW1, the only differences is that it costs silver to use them and there are waypoints everywhere.
a mount will always add immersion, fast travel has always bin a cheap shot.

This is exactly the reason I don’t like PoF approach. It transforms a game that compels you to explore, to think and to try again into… pressing “forward” key 10 minutes (Or not even that, if you know where the autorun is)…
Maybe I should rethink my stance on mounts after reading this. You already lost me with the word compel.
If a giant rabbit, a teleporter jackal, a hoverboard turned octopus and other animals save me from entering another tangled depths map ever again, I gladly welcome my new mount overlords!^^
Sorry, english is not my primary language. I’m probably wrong with the word.
How do you say something that is defying yet fun, vs something that is spoonfeed-ing-ly boring?
that it makes every other class in the game boring to play.”
