Soo after 2014, 2013, 2012 here is the 4th thread.

Any News about DirectX 11?

Don’t you mean 12, considering that’s what was just announced?

Im sure ANet is looking into it. That 50% increase for cpu-bound games would be extremely valuable to GW2, though I imagine it would be a huge project for them.

Correct me if I am wrong, but 12 would take the latest OS from microsoft and some of the newest gfx cards? I dont think that group is the biggest in gw2?

Nope dx12 will usually be back ported and is often supported via software if the GPU does not support all the calls.

The biggest improvement that dx12 gives is reduced CPU usage and faster gfx calls – which will improve heavy CPU (single thread) orientated games like GW2!

Most of the benefit is from how MS has rewritten the DX engine this time round rather than new fancy effects.

Imagine how old the engine is if they cannot implement this. :/

And on another not, I thought opengl was slow as thick kitten? I remember Unreal 1 on opengl, so sloowwwww.

Engine age has nothing to do with it. Just look at Unreal Tournament 99. You can use DX10 and even a DX11 renderer with it.

Also, OpenGL isn’t slow at all. Depends on driver support if anything though, which most vendors do really well with nowadays.

In addition, Windows 7 and 8 users get a free upgrade to Windows 10. Older cards will support DX12.

“There will be DX 11.1 cards that take advantage of a lot of the driver and software tech that we’re bringing in Windows 10, but if you want the full benefits of DX12, you’re going to need a DX12 card.”

I feel like what you quoted sounds slightly less optimistic. Throw this in there (from the same article):

“The power and frame rate wins we demonstrated come from improvements in CPU usage in the OS runtime and device drivers. And this was on DX11 devices.”

…And suddenly everyone running DX11 cards (which is probably most of us) is very happy.

(Bearing in mind these performance boosts with DX12 are apparently up to 50% ).
