The new doll based on Cobiah’s sister doll… is named Polla.

I don’t know if anyone researched it before closing the decission on the name, but in spanish that name means d¡ck (or any other synonim for that)…

Is it too late to retcon it into a different name? It sounds really gross when speaking about it in spanish and no doubt we will have thousands of jokes on the topic in Baruch’s Bay (Spain’s Server), probably ranging from silly to elaborate and imaginative ones. The worst part is that it’s a girl’s doll U.U

Well I’m from Spain, I generally play with all texts in english but everyone around is from Spain. I’m just giving feedback that they chose a really gross name at least from spanish speakers. It’s not that it “sounds” like that, it’s that it’s spelled exactly like that.

And no, I don’t have “other things to complaint” from that apparently for you big list so far on this festival, everything looks quite impressive

I bet there will be many jokes on that… unfortunately sometimes it’s hard to find names that don’t mean something or other in all languages.. 8^)

Polla, for those that don’t know, in spanish literally means female chick, it’s used as slang in Spain for kitten, in other countries have different meanings, though. In Mexico it’s an alcoholic drink, in Ecuador polla is a cheat sheet using in exams, in other countries it’s used to refer to young girls. It’s most likely pronounced as “Pola”, that is a name in spanish.

That wouldn’t be the first time things like that happens… The Mitsubishi Pajero, for example, was changed to Montero for spanish speaking countries, since in several countries the word “Pajero” literally means “kitten” (that will probably end up as kitten, though).

We do have a Spanish server – Baruch Bay.

So I guess they should change the name of their town?

i don’t know. d;ck could be c@ck, which means a rooster. so polla/pollos could mean a rooster/roosters.

Another example, Miyazaki’s movie “Laputa: Castle in the Sky” was changed in some spanish dubbings as “Lapuntu”, because Laputa sounds just like La puta, that in spanish means the… eeer… woman that charges for some intimate services (so it doesn’t get kittened)..

Polla in my country mean a really sexy and beautiful women. So is depend on you country. So far I don’t see the problem.

Thanks Colin Polly sounds like a cute name. They already had it as Polly? As currently the gemstore seems to be on maitainance I couldn’t check if it was changed before posting the thread hehe, so sorry if they already got it and I jumped too soon here

Meh, ANet was quick and swift on this one, but honestly, bit of a whiny complaint isn’t it? I bet if you look through enough languages you’ll find plenty of names that sound/read like something insulting, especially if you include slang.

To be honest what really worried me is that it’s supposed to be a girl’s toy, so the combination of both (girl toy with that name) could degenerate on some really… incredibly inapropiate sort of jokes I guess would be the term.

Anyway I’m glad that it has been taken care (I already can check the gemstore again and there is Polly!) and yep, as you said it maybe was a bit of a whiny complaint on my part but it’s solved now.

Good job to the LOC team then!

I’ve got alot of international friends and “Polla” is a pretty common nickname/term of endearment for girls. But, yeah, prolly I good idea that was changed for the Spanish language servers, (are there servers for that or is it handled another way?) just to avoid all the stupid jokes. (of course, now I’m never gonna be able to get that outa my head)

So what is the use of this? I know previous 0 gem items were hat items with a skin and I bought more than one(one for every char). But for this I bought only 1. Bad stats and not a skin slot?

That’s an urban legent, the Chevy Nova was sold under the original name in latinamerican countries. Source: my father owned one. The word Nova is more likely to be associated in spanish with “New” (Nuevo) or with a Nova star than the “No Va” the urban legend claims.

My father in law worked at one of the biggest car dealerships in Central America during that time, he’s the one that told me. He is far from fluent in English. That side still loves to tease anyone who owned one. I never owned one, and they tease me anyway over it just for being from the US! Seriously, I had to google in English what was meant by “urban legend”.

There was a similar situation in LotRO a few years ago, except it wasn’t an item it was a NPC that had been there for years. There was a named chicken in one area with a name something along the lines of "Fitta"* which is perfectly fine if you’re English, but not if you’re Swedish(?) because it’s the direct equivalent of “the C word”. It was discovered when a father was playing the game with his 9 year-old son and the kid burst out laughing. He had a good laugh about it too, because he was an adult and knew that different words have different meanings in different languages, but still felt it needed to be brought to Turbine’s attention.

*I had to look it up on an online dictionary. I thought the name was Clucka so it might not have been Swedish.

She was renamed on some localizations but still, if you going to add offensive names on the game only because it means nothing in english, then don’t be so strict when a player choose a offensive name in other language.

It seems that you spent too much time playing with Polla, and paying less attention to the festival.

Pollo means chicken right because I ate in a joint called Pollo y Rico where you were served rice with chicken.

Given that the doll is an accessory that gives a bonus to several stats, I would have thought it was a reference to a scene in Disgaea where you’re introduced to a zombie that is equipped with … something … that can be stolen and equipped to give a bonus to several stats.
