So, i have been stocking up on mats needed to craft Frostfang for a while now. I thought to myself “i will slowly gather these and when i finally get enough gold to get the other parts needed, i will have most of the mats already, that will be fun!”.

Then when i was playing yesterday, i turned into a Snow Leopard with a tonic, then kept fooling around with 2 other people in a town for half an hour, smiling and laughing all along, having way more fun than actually thinking about having a really really expensive weapon.

That was the moment when i realized why it’s so pointless to “grind” for Legendaries. The game does not get more fun just because i have one. I imagine it to be like the main story of Skyrim… once i completed it, i lost 60% of my motivation to do anything else in the world, since it did not feel threatened anymore and i haven’t even got proper “cheering” for it, just a oneliner of a thanks, exactly like for saving a random farmer’s chicken.

That’s how i imagine Legendaries. I would get it finally, after months, hell maybe a year, then there it is. It sits in my inventory or in my characters hands, i run around with the effects for 5 minutes, then realize that nothing has changed and nobody cares… and they are right, why should they?

What do you guys most enjoy in the game? Do you actually want a Legendary and if so, why?

You hit the thing right there. The reasons you stated for halting your quest for a legendary are pretty much exactly why I stopped trying to make one (that I would keep). I actually did the grind for Sunrise, just to see how long it would take. I almost uninstalled the game, I was soooo fed up with grinding. I ended up selling it because with that 2000g I received, I outfitted ALL my characters with many, many other things. It was a good decision.

Having a legendary will not make the game more fun. People will not “oooooh” and “aaaaahhh” over your shiny. No one cares, especially since any person with a credit card can buy the actual legendary. And ya, once you have what you wanted so bad… then what? Try to enjoy just playing. It’s so much better.

Pretty much. In traditional MMOs, the journey is just something to get out of the way ASAP so you can play the “real” game, in which you reach for a shiny that becomes obsolete as soon as you get it, then reach for the next shiny, repeat until you realize how pointless it is and cancel your sub.

GW2 is about the journey. If you aren’t enjoying the game, play something else. The shinies are irrelevant.

+1 OP

I’ve done many a wall of text
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Precursor-Rage/first
showing my disgust with current legendary acquisition.

There is nothing legendary about legendaries.

EDIT: To answer some of your questions.

I have no interest in getting one.

I enjoy my time in WvW. I have a great guild with great players who I enjoy raiding with daily. This is why I play GW2.

The only thing truly legendary about this, is the attention span of people actually grinding for a legendary.

Getting a legendary is so mind numbingly boring.

Well…yes? Except also no.

I love my Twilight. I didn’t start the grind for the legendary factor of the legendary – I started the grind because kitten, I wanted Twilight.

I also did this when I wanted The Mad Moon. I’ll also likely do this if there’s an armorset I really desire for my warrior.

Grinding isn’t a problem, grinding doesn’t make you like or dislike the game more – it’s all about what an individual wants. Don’t get a Legendary for the sake of having a Legendary – get a Legendary that you love, cherish and truly want. It will take away the “grindy” feeling.

If there isn’t a Legendary you love, cherish and truly want – congratulations, don’t get a Legendary.

They’re too flashy. (the stat changing appeals to me..but not enough..I just bough bag slots and extra weapons instead.)

What I enjoy most in game?
fractals, jp’s, cool armour for my characters(something I’m not working on atm, because I’m working on ascended T_T. ..for the infusion slots.. ). I also chat to friends in game and do LS stuff and just idk..
playing the game, for the game. (oh and I do chase mini;s now XD..)

When it comes down to it, it’s just a very pretty weapon skin.

“I can’t afford a legendary, therefore I don’t need one”

Pffft, nobody “needs” one. It’s a question of whether the colossal amount of time and effort it takes is actually worth the result. Would I like to have a legendary? Sure, they are cool, who wouldn’t like one. But I can’t think of any one thing they could realistically put in the game that would be worth the grinding/RNG/monotony/frustration we are talking about here. If it’s worth it to you, great — but not everybody appreciates the reward to the same degree, and not everyone takes to farming materials to such lengths.

Personally I can care less about the skin because all my graphics settings are low (thanks to world bosses and eotm zerg vs zerg). I enjoy min/maxing however so that stats actually interest me. Regardless, actively working on making one will be the absolute, absolute last thing I spend my time on in this game

It varies for everyone.

It’s not ‘pointless’ to grind for legendaries as long as it makes them happy and it helps them reach their goal.

Take a real life analogy. Some people would rather be unemployed, dress like crap and smoke pot all day while not working hard at all, yet they are satisfied. On the other side, you have people working hard at their jobs, making a living and earning enough money to buy all the technology, fashion and cars they’d like. Or you have someone inbetween. Someone who works hard to achieve their goals while at the same time relaxing when it’s appropriate.

No one here is wrong. We all just have different goals/expectations/tastes

Well I wrote this over a year ago (warning it is quite long)
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Legendary-vs-LEGENDARY/first#post1953929

So what has changed since then?

I guess I still consider a Legendary Item to be the biggest prize you can get in the game but the luster that the Legendary Weapons possessed early on, has kind of just worn off for me. I have seen so many people with Legendaries on a daily basis anymore they have just lost their unique appeal.

So would I make one if the RNG Fairy came a knocking at my door with a Pre?

I think I can honestly say, probably not. That would mean I would have to start farming and doing The Ruined City of Arah Dungeon (still have not done ANY dungeons) so I don’t see that happening.

The only way I am going to get one is if I would buy it.

Bifrost now costs ~3500gp which is up 1000gp since I wrote the above article a year ago. At that rate of inflation the cost will remain out of my reach for the duration of the game.

Conclusion

I guess I have just resigned myself to the fact that it is highly doubtful that I will ever get one and moved on to looking forward to other things.

Who knows though… The Legend could drop for me today and tomorrow you could see me LFG Arah. Doubt it, but you just never know.

Getting a legendary for most people is a long term goal, if you don’t think about it, and just enjoy the game everyday, just playing the game and actually doing something and not screwing around in town, you’ll eventually get it.

If it’s the only thing on your mind and the only thing keeping you playing the game then maybe this game isn’t for you, you shouldn’t put whether you play a game or not on a piece of equipment.

Getting a legendary was not a grind in my opinion. The only thing I considered was the precursor which took me around two weeks what I would call farming. The rests I did with single task: do some wvw for obsidian shards (I was lucky that season 1 started), do dungeons for tokens which I converted to ectoplams, do the dailies for the T6 materials, run around the world for some resources (wood, iron,…), …. . The rest I bought with gold which I got from my dungeons or selling my inventory. After two months I got my legendary. All I can say it does not require excessive grinding just dedication.

I’ve gone to far personally to turn back now Im close to completing my final gift mastery and just need to karma farm the rest of the shards for it. And Get Dusk which I am not looking forward to grinding gold for the next 3 years to aquire but I feel at this point if I don’t finish it I’ve wasted my time so if your gonna start making one then I suggest finishing it. It wouldn’t be so horrible if pre’s didnt have a zero % drop rate but it just seems to me some people get tons of them and I wonder if the RNG like Flags accounts or something.

Ive always wondered that too. Whether or not its real, though, it is a good tactic to do nonetheless.

Having a handful of accounts that get precursors regularly will eventually make them craft Legendaries to put on the market along side their excess precursors. Then everyone else can have horrible luck trying to get them as a drop (which will never happen in their life). This will make it more likely for people to spend money on gems in order to obtain them. It sucks. :I

Except that’s totally not true. Even if you truly want a Legendary, it will still be grindy to get it.

Maybe you need to reevaluate what you see in the Legendary? As it goes: check yoself before you wreck yoself.

Precursor acquisition is still a problem and there have been several threads about it – hopefully we’ll see Precursor crafting someday.

Still, on the flipside to this, the point is static: If you really want something, it won’t be grindy. If it feels like a grind, it calls for a reevaluation of your wants. It’s why you have to stick to “grinding” for stuff that you want, not grinding for the sake of having something valuable. My Mad Moon and Twilight are treasures to me and were totally worth it. I would also like to get The Dreamer someday if I can find use for shortbow. I’m not going out getting Kudzu or Bolt or Eternity or The Juggernaut though…because I do not want them. Some people might be different – maybe they want Kudzu and think Twilight’s pointless.

The key is figuring out what you want. Not everyone wants a legendary – but for those that do, the grind is just any other grind.

I think it depends on why you’re working towards a legendary. If you’re hoping to impress other players, or for it to make a difference in your gameplay then yes you’re going to be disappointed because neither of those will happen.

If you’re going for it just because it’s the hardest/most expensive so it seems like something you should work towards then getting one just means either you’ve got one less goal to look forward to achieving or you’ve gotten it out of the way and can get on with stuff you want to do.

But I think if you’re making one because you like the weapon itself then it can be worth it.

I’m currently working on The Dreamer and I couldn’t care less about the stats it comes with or the rarity or what other people might think of it. It’s the single most ridiculous thing I’ve seen in a game in a long time and I love it. Every time I see someone using one it makes me smile and I’m really looking forward to having my own.

Although it might also help that I don’t mind working slowly towards very long-term goals, or putting a lot of time and effort into cosmetic rewards. I’m also a mini pet collector and so far the effort I’ve put towards the Dreamer is nothing compared to my mini collection. It’s more something that happens gradually while I’m doing other things. I do dungeons or WvW or whatever and I get a bit of gold for the precursor, I level crafting and it means I can make the various components, world completion I’d want to do anyway.

Far to much work and gold for nice footprints and a shiny skin. If you include the fact that none of the (above ground) legendaries are even remotely legendary anymore I’ll pass.

I have the xanthium of dreams and seeing as how few of them there are out there I feel far more legendary using it.

I got close to getting my legendary, except for the precursor and eventually figured I would have a lot more enjoyment if I just sold all the mats I was collecting and bought other things. Got myself some cultural armour tier 3, which looks nice on an asura as it has glowy parts and I bought all sorts of other items, skins and things with the money I made from the materials I had collected. Also maxed some trade skills and made some ascended things as well.

This was helped by the fact that the legendary I wanted, the predator, was steampunk themed and didn’t really work on my asura…it was also laughably tiny, when on other races it scales to be a good size. My asura can hold the shoulder stock of that rifle in one of her tiny hands, which is all kinds of wrong.

Basically, legendary weapons just are not worth it at their current cost and you can buy a whole larger lot of “happy/fun” with a fraction of the money one requires.

getting a legendary is the only thing that keeps me playing this game, hopefull this friday my server will be blue in wvw and ill get all map.

Pve is not enjoyfull at least not for me since I only think in getting gold for my legend and that keeps me from enjoying pve,in order to get the gold/ectos i need to dedicate my time for 6 dungen runs daily, fractals was cool at first, after 2 times is annoying and boring, and after +100 is disgusting, and u have the sensation that the game forces u to do the same annoying dungen again and again and again till u cant take it anymore.
Probably after I get sunrise will go back playing lol or warthunder. With the lineageIII and more mmos coming, dont think gw2 will have any future in this state, the the gems store is good and i like it since it dosent have any p2w items and you can easy get 100 gold and buy a suit or anything u want.

+1 to the OP. If you’d like to go for a Legendary, make sure that you’re getting it because it means something to YOU. Don’t get it out of a desire to “show off” (because while your friends will be happy for you, nobody else will care) or to “keep up with the crowd” (because the crowd is constantly chasing the latest and greatest skins. It’s a never-ending treadmill).

I only ever go for skins that I personally like the aesthetics of; sometimes they’re expensive ones like Immobulus (still on my wish-list for someday) or the Fractal Sword, and other times they’re dirt-cheap ones like the Krytan Mace or the Lionguard Pistol. But I use them because I like the way they look on my character.

Right now I’m going for a full ascended armor-set, which is hard enough with spare free time and a mixture of drop-rates and crafting-recipes that punish you for choosing a class that wears light armor.

Yea, i agree that it is no point to get a legendery. The cost to obtain a precursor is insane and after all the gathering. It is just a very common skin you met everywhere.

i have made my sunrise, the hyper feeling only lasted for couple mins. i am glad i didn’t throw anything in toilet nor a buy order on TP, as my whole life in GW2 i never able to save up more than 201 gold.

Couple days ago, i met a random player who greet me for my sunrise. he said it is a very beautiful sword but then he asked me HOW AM I ABLE TO SPEND SO MUCH MONEY TO BUY THE SWORD. i lost my will to chat any longer. i loot my dawn i gathered my own materials and everyone thought i bought the sword? i am done with legendary.

For me, making a Legendary weapon isn’t about the weapon itself, but having a long term goal to work towards. I honestly couldn’t care less about the level of the stats on the weapons, and in most cases I don’t even like the skins. If I wanted that level of stats, making Ascended weapons would be so much easier. But having a long term goal helps to keep me interested in the game.

Well i think the people who love the skins won’t feel it’s too much work to buy or make a legendary. Personally, i have a certain look for a given character and will spend 200g on one skin if i feel it fits the look i’m going for. The ONLY skin i like of the legendaries is the rifle, but it doesn’t go at all with my overall look so i have no incentive to get it.

On the other hand i have many dragons jade, dream thistle, and tormented skins. I got loads of those glowy pink/purple mist weapons, and lots of gem store armor. More than anything i LOVE how all my characters look.

I just think you should have fun in the game, whatever that means to you.

Also, I did for a little while wonder if it was all worth it but then they added rainbow hoof prints and I knew that it was I get compliments on my bow often.
I am thinking about working toward making the bifrost staff. So pretty . I am so glad we can share legendary skins with other characters now using the Wardrobe. I think the Wardrobe has made making legendaries a little bit more worth it.

After reading through all these comments, i’m not sure who was the one talking about how it’s not a grind of you really want the Legendary: Yes, it is a grind. No matter what you say or how you think about getting that weapon, it will still cost the same and it will still take long to get it.

if you don’t think about it, and just enjoy the game everyday, just playing the game and actually doing something and not screwing around in town, you’ll eventually get it.

Oh please, screwing around in town is not doing something for you? That must be sad. I guess you are one of those people who only play for gold.

Just try to lighten up sometimes and look around the world, just having fun with others. But that’s just a tip.

getting a legendary is the only thing that keeps me playing this game, hopefull this friday my server will be blue in wvw and ill get all map.

That’s exactly what i was talking about. It kills any enjoyment of the game for people like this.

Summary of this thread:

“I don’t have a legendary and don’t want to grind for it, so I think it’s silly to get one and I can enjoy the game without getting this shiny I want to get”

Or

“I have a legendary and it’s no big deal, even though when I didn’t have one I was desperate to get one.

So, what new did you actually say with this comment? Nothing? Okay.

Then reevaluate your priorities. Honestly, it’s a broken record. If it’s something you really want, it won’t be a grind. It won’t happen in a day – but it’ll be about two or three months at least if you manage what you currently have. The road to a Precursor can be a grind but that’s crappy RNG which has been debated for a while.

If you really don’t have the time to manage that, I fail to see why you’re complaining. Seems like you should just uninstall the game because obviously your life is so full that any amount of timely effort is beneath you.

I will not get a legendary, they are ugly and the grind is to big. I use weapons like foefires essence(has the skin of the spirit greatsword).

Having a legendary will not make the game more fun. People will not “oooooh” and “aaaaahhh” over your shiny.

And some people will actively want to bash your modem with a sledgehammer when you stroll in with The Dreamer. …No seriously, I stay at range 2000 from that annoying piece of horsekitten.

Many alts; handle it!

What do you guys most enjoy in the game? Do you actually want a Legendary and if so, why?

Do I want a legendary? at first I didn’t, as I didn’t like the models my character could use.

Now I have a lvl 80 guardian, a level 60 mesmer, a lvl 45 ranger and a lvl 32 warrior, and all of them would like to have Twilight. Am i going to farm for it? No. I would need like 700gold for the precursor alone, and it would take me years to amass that fortune. Farming is not fun.

What do I enjoy in the game? doing dungeons, taking part in events i didn’t know existed, and the thing I enjoyed the most was the marinoette.

There.

I see someone is upset, just don’t know why. Did you really expect everyone to say “Ooohh you have a Legendary, you are awesome!!44!” ?

My point still stands: It won’t change anything about the way to acquire the needed mats/items if you really want that weapon. It just won’t. It’s still considered a grind, especially when Legendaries are not even special anymore, since a lot of people run around with them.

Also, complaining? Where did i complain? I reacted to your dumb comments, which failed to make any sense so far, and you just outright failed to understand my own comments. Please, just try to get yourself in a better shape, or just don’t even post.
