I’m pretty sure this topic has been brought up a few times, but I wasn’t reading the forums them, and I just can’t get the forum search function to work the way I want it to. So, maybe a new batch of brainstorming will generate something.

As it is well known, there are 8 different classes with 3 levels of armor: heavy, medium and light. We have 3 light (scholar) classes and 3 medium (adventurer) classes, but only 2 soldier (heavy) classes. It feels slightly unbalanced. For one thing, I feel like heavy armor doesn’t sell as well on the trading post as the other two armor levels do. So I’d like to come up with a very loose idea for a third soldier class, but coming up with a name, skills or mechanics for it isn’t that easy.

One idea I had on the mechanics side of things is that I noticed the elementalist only had access to the trident underwater, and the engineer only used a harpoon gun. If we’re truly following a pattern, the soldier class would be restricted underwater to just a spear. However, part of the reason those two classes only have one underwater weapon is they don’t have access to weapon swapping, because they have so many other skills through their unique mechanics. I’d like to do that for the new soldier class… and I got stuck.

So! Anyone have any creative ideas? What would be good weapons for a front-liner who can’t swap out weapons? Would he be using mostly melee weapons? Would she instead have a bunch of ranged weapons? Perhaps a mix of both? Would he have any sort of magic like the scholars and the guardian? Would she be more ability based like the adventurer classes and the warrior? What would be your ideal 3rd soldier class?

I think a pikeman class would be interesting. I don’t know exactly how it would work, but it would be something new and substantial, which is more than we’re getting right now.

Personally, I would love a heavy class that uses water weapons on land.

Spear:
Direct damage, Immoblize, Cripple. Melee but extended range (130->195)
Harpoon Gun:
Pulling and general CC. High range (1200).
Trident:
Conditions, similarly themed to Elementalist. Medium range (900).

The class mechanic could potentially be a mana bar (since no class in GW2 uses one), that would work similarly to a mix between Warrior’s adrenaline, Necro’s life force and Thief’s initiative, allowing the use of four extra skills (F1-F4) only after the bar has been sufficiently filled by using skills 0-9 from the skillbar that inflict CC.

The bar could fill up faster when a CC skill is resisted, for example when dealing with Defiant on bosses or when facing players with Stabilty in PvP, and subsequently the F1-F4 skills would be used to counter and punish CC resistance.

This would be hard to balance, but create a whole new dynamic… unfortunately, it also defines an actual role, which is forbidden in this game. :P

I was thinking something along the lines of a necromancer/guardian/ritualist mix or “antiguardian” that focuses on summoning spirits, ghosts, and phantasms to fight for him/her. Now, when I say “fight for him/her” I don’t mean in the same way a mesmer’s clones or a guardian’s spirit weapons do. I’m thinking more along the lines of how a Ranger’s Maul skill works. This skill is in a way performed with the “spirit of a bear” in nature. But the antiguardian’s skills would actually be carried out via other spirits. As for the main mechanic, that could go several ways. I’m thinking some sort of changing system (not unlike an elementalists) that allows the antiguardian to swap between ghosts/spirits/phantasms/curses. and depending on the “attunement” the player’s skills would have different outcomes and effects.

I would want something along the lines of war onlines marauder, whom had various auras which could harm enemies or benefit allies. So it is a mix of a necros debuffs, guards buffs, and d/d eles pbaoe.

Well, the Fighter in this game essentially is the Barbarian. I don’t know what you would expect a barbarian to differently, flavor-wise. Adrenaline sounds just like Berserker Rage to me.

Yes, Paragons from Nightfall were a heavy armor class. They were merged into Warrior with GW2. Paragon’s main skills were all Shout types(Shout, Echo, Chant) and they’re weapons wear Spears/Shields. Would be nice to see a Spear/Javelin weapon added to the game.

That actually sounds like the paragon from GW except they used shouts, echos, and chants to buff/debuff.

What about a heavy armor class, that uses med/light weapons? (i.e. dagger, axe, shortbow, mace, pistol, etc.) Something like a cross between a warrior/ranger. For mechanics, something along the lines of having an adrenaline “type” bar, that allows to summon something of various levels depending on how full the bar is. Like a lesser being at stage 1, a being at stage 2, and a major being at stage 3. Call it a summoner.

(just throwing out ideas, no need to debate as to why this couldn’t work, and how OP it would be etc.)

@Galphar – according to ANet, the Paragon was actually rolled into the Guardian, not Warrior. Guardians also have shout abilities, and apparently a few other links between Para/Guard. (I never played Paragon in GW1, so I don’t know specifically myself.)

Yeah, but I feel that summoning spirits and whatnot fit more into a necro than anything, or a norn at the very least. Yet, summoning elementals doesn’t quite fit either. What about it summons a creature from the mists based on the trait lines or “attunement”? like Nature, Aether, Abyssal, and Divine?

This would make it more of a cross between warrrior/ranger/elementalist, but still could be alot of fun.

Necromancers don’t really summon spirits, though. They reanimate corpses and flesh. Rangers and guardians are more in-tune with spirits than a necromancer, and they don’t interact with the right kind.

Sounds like like several people are describing a “death knight” or “dark templar”. I’ve been thinking about this for a while and I’d love to see a heavy armor class that uses dark magic /necromancer type spells to augment physical combat. Include auras, shouts and possibly a minion or two.

With that said, the death knight/dark templar is pretty common in fantasy games but I have no idea what sort of lore GW has to support it.

My only problem with the “death knight” template is that they’re usually along the evil axis — or, at the very least, definitely not one of the “fighting for the cause of justice” kind of guys. And that just doesn’t flow with GW2’s story at all. We have necromancers and everything, but they don’t really do ookie gross stuff like most fantasy necro’s do. But I don’t know how they could implement the deathknight archetype without keeping in that vein of evil. It’s a much more core character concept.

I would add the Samurai from the Ministry of Purity which look like they had heavy armor http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Ministry_of_Purity#List_of_hostile_NPCs

For flavor they would not have a weapon swap, only use “blade type weapons”, maybe add a “short sword” instead of daggers taht only this class can use (so great sword, or sword+short sword), and their “thing” would be “fighting styles” You switch to a different battle style and your weapons have different attacks 1 more defensive, 1 more offensive, etc.

Lorewise as I said they would come from Cantha and yes also bring back Cantha.

Win/win.

Edit: also if you leave your off-hand empty you still get attacks (kicks, etc)

I’ve often thought about a particular heavy class that arose from the ocean.
“The Pirate "
The lore for this creation would be rather simple since most of the games story arc’s in Gw1 an 2 contain great deals of pirate story lines. Nightfall especially contains quite a bit.
As far as weapon sets go , well that pretty much would be easy to do \
Spear , cutlass(sword) , Dagger , pistol , torch, and this one is a bit of a stretch due to having to introduce into the game but I would love to see a Net (like that used in the gladiator style of combat Spear/Net combo ). Forget about it

Not fond of any summons but if it had to happen . I guess some of the possible choices would be A mermaid summon where the ground below turned to water an a mermaid hand would reach out an drag u into the whirlpool created for a brief moment of immobility or damage whatever . Another possible summon would be a Harpoon gun that would spawn out of thin air an launch a spear an rope to the aggressor (think scorpion in Mortal Kombat) and said weapon drags u back to the pirate where he guts u or stuns. again just spit balling here.

A third possible skill could be Artillery cannon fire . Horac or horak or whatever the hell his name is with that shoulder mounted cannon , Quite possibly the most underused character in the game made one hellva an example of how the class could be played.

A fourth Skill an this is for the trolley effect but I envision a skill that when used the pirate sings a old shanty song that dazes the would be attacker. this would be like the same manner in which the mad king would tell his jokes. only faster an shorter.

Also and this is not skill related but could you imagine this pirate with a Parrot on his/her shoulder that would fly out an attack the enemy F1 2 3 4 skills like the ele changing elemental fields. each f # key gets a dif response , or simply use the parrot as another money sink as a back piece. I"M sure 70 percent of the remaining players would love to have another option that doesn’t require an actual backpack, or silly kitten book. The quiver an the flower made sense. The rest don’t.

I have about a bazillion other ideas but since I know this won’t happen . just thought I would finally take a moment to for atleast a minute believe a Pirate class would happen in a game surround by oooh say Pirates. That’s a ref for gw1 and for the sole reason that LIONS ARCH even exists . Just my 2 cents no need for change .

oh side note. For those raring up to sink their teeth into this an rip apart these ideas explaining point for point why this is not possible. get a life . This post was a simple opinion piece.

‘Dark Paragon’ – heavy infantry with a focus on debuffing/demoralizing foes rather than buffing/inspiring allies. Sword, mace, axe, maybe with some trait that gives a bonus to dual wielding matched weapons. Introduce (non-exclusive, of course) halberds and/or two-handed axes, or make up some wacky Tyrian warstaff with hammer heads (or blades) on either end. Also, introduce (possibly exclusive) main-hand and off-hand ‘unarmed’ attacks (punches, grabs, holds). Other weapon possibilities: bolas, nets, the return of ‘dry land’ spears, ‘pistol’ crossbows firing poison darts. Think: dirty tricks, mind games, poisoned weapons.

Still too warrior-y? Too thief-y, maybe?

The table is a fable.

I don’t know if you know this, but heavy metal armor and oceans don’t exactly mix.

One fall in the drink, and you’re sinking to a watery grave.

Every pirate we actually see in-game is either a Light or Medium armor class character. Heck, most of the outfits you can actually assemble your self out of medium armor pieces you can unlock.

And we will call that class…. Aquaman.

Militia maybe. There is a heart in queensdale where you train with a militia. Maybe a heavy armor martial class that specializes in hit and run tactics. Although in my mind how I picture it its nothing more then thief and engineer turned into one class.

How about lionguard. Imagine if you gave warriors a bag of thief tricks so they could fight super dirty, mixed in with some engineer flair. So one utility would have you chug a hero’s elixir, or use a smoke bomb, toss a Molotov, or maybe use shouts in a police like way.

Weapon Specialist. Similar in composition to the warrior and replace adrenaline with a special skill set for each weapon. The longer you use the weapon without swapping the more powerful the special skills become.

I don’t think you’d have to go far to find a weapon specialist type of fighter in the lore either.

Militia doesn’t really work as a class, since a militia is just ordinary people conscripted into fighting to protect the city. Similarly, the lionguard just protects Lion’s Arch, just like the Wolfborn are the norn “police”. But that’s more quibbling over a name, which isn’t helpful at this point.

Some of these ideas are good, and we don’t really need to worry about lore until the mechanics base is decided. Sure, GW1 makes for a good place to start, but most of those classes have already been brought over in some form and leaves little else to draw from. I really liked kitten’s idea of the samurai having stances affect the weapon skills, but then the warrior already has stance skills…

One other thing I was trying to consider when bringing this all together was using the weapons that are currently used by only 2 professions: mace, hammer, both bows, and rifles. It’s a bit of an eclectic mess, all over the place and not really focused. I considered making it a range-heavy class, like a sniper, but there’s 2 problems with that.

  1. Why would a class that primarily fights from afar need heavy armor?
  2. The engineer pretty much only has ranged weapons, at least in the base set.

I like all the creative ideas. It’s interesting to see where people’s heads are at. I bet even a dev is lurking the corner, quietly keeping some of the ideas they had for soldier classes quiet, just in case they decide to release it in a future patch.

I’ve often thought about a particular heavy class that arose from the ocean.
“The Pirate "

Pirates don’t wear heavy armor, for obvious reasons.

This idea would require a lot of work. Expansion level amounts of work and we have no evidence Arenanet is interested in developing substantial new content.

A new class wouldn’t require anywhere near the amount of work an expansion would require. Besides, this is fun brainstorming.

@Galphar – according to ANet, the Paragon was actually rolled into the Guardian, not Warrior. Guardians also have shout abilities, and apparently a few other links between Para/Guard. (I never played Paragon in GW1, so I don’t know specifically myself.)

This is pretty accurate. Guardian shouts closely resemble the shouts of Paragon in GW1. “Retreat!” and “Stand Your Ground!” are both names taken from Paragon shouts and “Save Yourselves!” was one of the 4 most important skills on the Imbagon bar (despite it being a warrior shout).

Bringing the paragon into GW2 simply wouldn’t work.

If we want a third heavy knight, why not just rip death knight straight from WoW? It would semi-similar to elementalist’s attunements, except they could use “glyphs” for their class mechanic that can have bonus effects of chill, poison or burning depending on which glyph is used. Their trees could improve the effects of their glyphs, such as elementalist attunements or guardian virtues.

On top of this, they would only use greatsword, sword/shield or spear – their skill sets will vary by the “glyph,” not so much of their weapon choice. Similar to an elementalist/guardian mix.

I’d suggest the restore engineers to soldier class, they were like that in BWE2.

I change builds all the time and I wouldn’t mind if there is a new heavy class that will use sword, mace, and shield more frequently. Currently, the other 2 heavy favor GS, hammer, and axe. Sword, mace, shield are fun and nice looking but somehow I usually play them once in a while and swap back to other more dps weapons (in pve). So yeah perhaps a mercenary class and its utility may have a signet, shout, stealth, heal support, cc, etc. I mention stealth here because mid and light have stealth class, so might as well make one of the heavy stealthy :P

Maybe a heavy version of the engineer, focused on the use of technology, but with a more offensive/raw DPS bias. Rocket launcher kit, stationary machine gun kit, use the rifle as a sniping weapon with a low rate of fire, pistols as a mobile direct damage weapon, daggers with some martial arts, dunno what else.

Class mechanic could be like a hybrid of adrenaline and virtues, build up a meter using some mechanic to cast a set of skills limited by cost and some cooldown that provide team support, e.g. a nearby allies support skill that reduces cooldowns on currently recharging skills for the team, a support skill that extends active boons on nearby allies, summon an AI ally, a skill that increases damage on next attack for nearby allies.

…Commando?

Unfortunately, between the Warrior and the Guardian, Guild Wars 2 has exhausted most of fantasy class archetypes that use heavy armor. The only remain on (and it is a stretch as Guardian is already the magic-using heavy) would be an eldritch knight type of character with maybe attunement-like stances example being instead of new skill set there would be slight modification to attacks and perhaps how the character behaves (example movement speed increase in air stance, fire stance splashes an addition targer those kind of things). They could be a bit different by having shouts, glyphs and unique skill set, but not signets.

I honestly think they should just bring back the Dervish or Paragon to fill that third slot. They’re both different enough from the Warrior and Guardian to fit and, let’s be honest, neither of those classes was properly folded into any of the existing GW2 classes anyway.

A lot of people are going to say that the other races can’t be a Dervish, but who’s to say that there aren’t Charr or Sylvari that “converted” to worshipping in the Six? The Charr already freely admit that they believe in their existence and the Sylvari are always trying to learn new things, so they could fit.

Two comments.

1. It would need medium base HP.

2. During this addition, one of the Adventurer classes should have base HP bumped to the same base HP as War and Necro. My vote would be Engi.

Personally, I would love a heavy class that uses water weapons on land.

Spear:
Direct damage, Immoblize, Cripple. Melee but extended range (130->195)
Harpoon Gun:
Pulling and general CC. High range (1200).
Trident:
Conditions, similarly themed to Elementalist. Medium range (900).

<snip>

I always thought the third soldier should use polearms, also. Though I want another class that can use mace, longbow or shortbow since currently they’re only useable by 2 classes. It may not fit the lore but I think a lancer would be very cool.

Steam knight – similar to golemancer or dragon lancer of DnD, except you have a clockwork mecha/juggernaut at your disposal. Dish out mainly condition damage instead of melee. Equivalent to Ranger of med armor class or Necromancer of light armor class.

Carries mainly single handed non-edged weapons only mace/focus/warhorn/torch so as not to mess up the clockwork mecha accidentally; wears heavy armor because clockwork mecha may mess you up accidentally XD

The thief who did dat – Crystal Desert

we should get space marines as a new class :P

joking aside (though space marines WOULD be awesome), something similar along those lines maybe, a heavy class able to use pistol as a mainhand or offhand, along with whatever other weapons. maybe call it Vagabond, or Reaver, and have its skills revolve around dragon corruption. you know, beat them by using and understanding their power………..just throwing ideas out there, i know lore says NO to this…………but it would be cool.

Fix what you have before you build something new
