Not sure that using mechanics, such as dodge, as designed and intended constitutes exploiting in the sense the word is generally used in gaming.

My point is that there’s always one “trick” to defeating a champ and that’s it. I’ve watched solo dungeon runs and solo champ fights – it basically comes down to a certain set of armor plus a particular build, and then dodging a lot.

Because champ design comes down to: lots and lots of health, immune to cc, and 1-shotting (or close to it).

Basically, combat design for PvE enemies is overly simplistic – instead of giving champs diverse set of skills, it’s just “let’s give them lots of health, make them immune to almost anything except straight damage, and then give them the ability to nearly 1-shot players so they have to make liberal use of the dodge mechanic in every circumstance”.

Or something like that – there may be some slight variation here and there, but the point being it’s always formulaic like that somehow.

Not interesting.

I never said to any of you, who are getting upset, that if you like the living story, etc, then this game isn’t for you. For probably the 10th time, I want to say.

Anet has made me feel and other feel lately by the PR theyve given that they really can’t do much besides the living story. They even posted on the forums today that they are constrained with what they can do (feature pack 2, living story 2). they also mentioned WvW tournaments but as a WvW players I don’t feel these are a substitute for content. Thats not what we ever asked for. To say otherwise is insane because of the backlash that was held on the forum. Granted they improved the system but still.

In the end, the living story is the business model they want to take, and arn’t really able to do anything else.

All MMOs are linear as far as I can tell. Dungeon 1, Dungeon 2, Raid. That’s what it is.

The reduction of the entire MMO genre to the classic themepark PvE-centric model is somewhat naive on your part.

EVE Online is an MMO.

Yep with 500 thousands subs at max. But I was talking about theme park MMOs thanks for pointing that out.

I don’t really see any good reason to compare theme park MMOs to sand box MMOs, or MMOFPSs for that matter.

Sandbox is it’s own thing. It’s not linear by definition. But theme park MMOs, and Guild Wars 2 is very much a themepark, is going to be linear.

Why did you feel the need to point out EVE’s subscriber count? Is it meant to be a jab? Because when GW2 will have 10 years you can bet the population won’t be anywhere near that number.

So we agree that not all MMOs are linear, but themepark ones are. And that GW2 is essentially a themepark one. Cool just wanted to be precise, sorry for being pedantic.

It’s not a jab at all, and the tone of my post wasn’t meant to sound sarcastic. I was thanking you for pointing that out.

It’s very easy to forget about sandbox MMOs, because they represent a tiny portion of MMOs by percentage that’s all. When I say MMORPGs, almost all the time I’m talking about themepark MMORPGs because that’s what most people are playing. If you add up all the people playing sandbox MMORPGs and compared them to themeparks, you’ll likely find that themepark MMORPGs are in fact what a great majority of people play. It’s not that sandbox MMOs don’t exist. It’s just that there’s no real reason to talk about them there. I brought up Eve because it’s probably, at least in the west, the most popular sandbox MMORPG, thus explaining why I didn’t take sand box MMORPGs into account.

My thank you was genuine.

You post seems to be a week early.

Maybe hold off until we see what the new PvE feature part of the feature patch holds and then make a judgment.

For me at least this is their last chance to show they are actually working on PvE content and not just smoke and mirrors. If next week doesn’t have some hefty PvE content then I am inclined to agree with you.

I am waiting but I gotta say after the list they posted I don’t hold much hope as an Engineer. I’m really really trying to be positive about this but let me give you a back story.

When a company does something I don’t like I make sure that I’m not taken in again by it. I watch any and all other projects under the same publisher.

Let me tell you that the same problems we’re seeing here as far as rewards, the economy, loot etc are actually happening in a sister project and are actually causing people to leave not in the second month but the first month of a sister game of this one.

When I learned all of the same problems I’ve experienced as a player in this title are indeed happening in a sister game when it comes to loot, progression, rewards and the economy, that let me know that there’s a bigger problem here. I’m not making this stuff up seriously I’m not go read that other game’s forum you’ll see what I mean.

The only thing we can do at this point is vote with our wallet. That’s what I plan on doing myself I cannot speak for everyone but this game is just nowhere near not only what I was told it would be prelaunch but it’s also nowhere near what they said it would have 6 months ago.

I’m trying to be patient I am but I also have to be realistic, here’s me being patient waiting for that feature pack and then any announcement they have to make about what’s planned next if there’s anything on the wiki list they are planning on working on for Feature Pack 3

If you’re trying to say somehow that Wildstar is a sister project to Guild Wars 2, you’d have a hard time convincing anyone who follows both games. For one thing, Wildstar was meant to appeal to a different audience, but more importantly, NCsoft bought Carbine Studios pretty much when the game was already in nearly it’s final state. Now it’s possible I suppose that NcSoft completed gutted the game and remade it in its own image, except for one thing. They not only have different audiences, but completely different payment models. The stuff that people are saying about Guild Wars 2 and why the drops are like this wouldn’t even apply to a monthly subscription game. It would make no sense to do so, since you’d want people to stay.

In fact, there is very little between Guild Wars 2 and Wildstar that you could called similar, let alone sister games. Wildstar is a more traditional MMO, which happens to have active combat, but also raids and dungeons are the focus, there’s a trinity system and there are all the usual text quests and hubs. Wildstar also has housing.

I’m not sure by what basis you’d call it a sister game, but I can pretty much guarantee the reason it isn’t doing as well as expected has more to do with the fact that most people don’t really want another WoW clone, rather than the drop rate, a subject you’re completely fixated on, is somehow at fault.

I hope its good info. One thing I expect(perhaps only expected now) was a gambit system for dungeons. Something to keep them fresh and new. Who knows….There could be some really interesting things. I have no idea what is going to be there. Its certainly not going to be content which we already know.

A single dungeon with the depth and the difficulty of underworld/ fow or doa from GW1 would be enough to keep many players busy for months. But instead of we get some living story that you finish in one hour, and thats it.
The combat-system of GW2 is the best i ever played, and i dont understand why they waste it with their living story instead of giving us a challenging dungeon.

A dungeon along the lines of the Aetherblade path that is not done by people because you can do several other dungeons in the same length of time it takes to run this one path?

In my guild we do aetherpath almost every day.

But of course a dungeon that is longer and more difficult should give better rewards. In GW1 you got the obsidian armor and tormented weapons in these dungeons, rewards that were unique to them.

You didn’t get obsidian armor for doing FoW. You got obsidian armor for doing the first two quests in the Underworld and buying obby shards from the trader. Many people who have Obby armor got runs just to get to the armor smith and never finished FoW. Tormented weapons were sellable, and tradeable. I have a friend who farmed feathers just to buy a tormented weapon. He never set foot in DOA.

There are rewards that are in TA that you can’t get anywhere else and they sell for a whole lot of gold. Just saying.

No I meant the people im referring to like I did throughout the entire post. WvW, sPvP, dungeons/fractals community, etc. People who want more than the living story.

This is more of a post where people who like the living story get extremely upset. Its that or people who still want to like guild wars 2 even though it will never probably never have any significant expansion like content as long as the living story is around.

Again, no need to have heated arguments about this. Im speaking to those who of the other communites of the game who tries believe they will get significant content updates. To those of you who know who you are, its been a good run but for now its probably time to find anothe rgame.

Without totally going off topic here, very quickly, what GW2 and Wildstar have in common is NCSOFT.

GW2 and Wildstar serve two totally different audiences. If Wildstar is happening to see a drop at the moment, some of that is probably due to the standard attrition that every game sees within the first two months. Other attrition, if it is happening (and I have no data), is probably due to the fact that the game is more challenging than most current games (excluding Eve – which is a persistent strategy game.)

I started with GW2 because I didn’t want a WoW clone either, having played multiple different MMOs, long before (edit: and after) WoW was released.

Yet, after being alienated consistently for 18 months with each consecutive release of patches and what is now obviously the direction GW2 is going, I have invested into Wildstar and am barely hanging in with GW2 for what may be the last hurrah of WvW (Season 3).

Wildstar is providing the exploration I want, new playable content, and the challenge I need as a skilled player. And, after having spent over 10+ year’s worth of comparable subscription fees on GW2, I am thoroughly enjoying paying only $30/month for two Wildstar accounts and seeing the devs there confirm that they need to deliver subscription content since they are charging for it.

The audiences for those games are totally different.

I have enjoyed a lot of what GW2 originally offered. I understand there is an audience that enjoys the direction it has veered into, and will continue heading towards.

I am sad that my time with this game looks like it’s dwindling. I wanted this game to last long past what it has.

And what the OP describes in her original post is in part why this game no longers works for me, or for those who play with me.

Sadly.

BG: 52 alts, 29 lvl 80’s. They all look good, so I am done with the game: Oct 2014

Thanks for summarizing me so well Its not that the living story didn’t improve. They changed things, that were good, but also changed things and made things worse. On top of that, they still ignore what the community has been asking for, for so a while. They don’t really listen to other parts of the game that I have already mentioned, only living story.

Speaking of new zones. How many other MMO’s have you played? In 5 days I can proudly announce we’ve had 2 smaller sized zones added in 2 years! On top of that we’ve had 2 content updates for fractals/dungeon community. A few new spvp maps. 1 new overflow map for wvw. 2 really really cool megabosses, its sad they didn’t add more. In terms of content, Anet has added very little.

In terms of features they have added a lot, which is good. But Anet tends to be very scared about adding content as they don’t want to run into gw1 syndrome where the community got to spread out. They are doing the polar opposite of that now by looking at gw2’s history.

In terms of features they have added a lot, which is good. But Anet tends to be very scared about adding content as they don’t want to run into gw1 syndrome where the community got to spread out. They are doing the polar opposite of that now by looking at gw2’s history.

My summary applies to the above as well.

Bye random person. See you in two weeks when you make another copypaste complaint thread.

This game may have problems, and it’s obviously not living up to the ridiculous hype it has generated back in the day but it’s nowhere near as bad as these “OMG THE SKY IS FALLING!” threads make it out to be.

No need for sarcastic comments. Im just painting you a realistic picture of the state and future of guild wars 2. If the living story can’t cater to more than one section of content then guild wars 2 will continue to go downhill. No big expansions, no big features or content that you wanted.

I’m not being sarcastic. You will be back in a few weeks time to complain some more.

What you wrote is a typical copypaste complaint thread that pops up on all MMO forums. It’s purpose is attract some attention, nothing more.

Disregard all the good things, exaggerate every problem, doom and gloom tone. If you are really leaving then just leave. There is no shame in getting bored of a game after two years, you don’t have to look for excuses or c/p them from some other forum clown.

Many points aren’t exaggeration, it is true. What we know is Anet is gonna to focus on living story, open world and its gem store. Everything else is gonna take the back seat. For people who love those, great news. Anet is gonna continue making them. For those that don’t, too bad. They aren’t changing even if it alienate and push away the rest of them. You can’t please everyone.

They are an exaggeration.

Let’s just ignore the new zone because it’s too dry, improved LS/PS because reasons and a new set of achievements because doing those is for nerds. If you disagree you aren’t being honest to yourself. I promise I’m quitting!

That’s pretty much OP in a nutshell.

Its one thing if you genuinely like the living story and all that has been provided in the games history. If thats the case, then good. But to misconstrue my comments just makes you look pathetic lol. its okay for people to criticize GW2, especially with recent developments, it really deserves it.

Not to be cynical, but… ok, who am I kidding, I’m about to be cynical.

I’ve seen this kind of thread so many times throughout games and the fact is, sometimes we just burn out on a particular game, it changes into something different from what it started as, or we change as a person and so it feels different.

It’s not always just the second one (that the devs have “abandoned what you love to do and there is nothing more for you”). In fact, I’d say most of the time it’s way more complicated than that and we just tell ourselves that our reasons for feeling estranged are simple because it makes leaving easier.

When the reality is that a part of us is still attached. We don’t really want to leave. You don’t make a post like this if there is no uncertainty. If there was no uncertainty, you would already be out the door.

We want the games to keep being what they once were – keep giving us the same feeling they once did – but like everything in life, things change or wear on us and time marches on. So we hope that the devs will give us a game that renews the love we once had and will work around the clock to make it happen.

And the cynical truth of it all is that we’re infatuated with an ideal more than anything. That amazing feeling that we remember getting – the one that we’re begging to get back and continue having – was never perfect. It was always riddled with its own set of problems. But we remember it so fondly because back then, our enjoyment surpassed the problems.

So the real loss here is the loss of joy and fun. Not a loss of a particular piece of content that will magically make everything better – and not something that we can place in a box and write with just a few words. We lose the joy and fun for a variety of reasons and sometimes the game itself will never be enough. Sometimes we have to rediscover the fun for ourselves.

You know what the most fun-filled joyous moments are for me in an MMO? When I’m first trying it and I know just enough about it to feel like I’m Mr. Awesome, but little enough to not feel overwhelmed by the weight of its inadequacies.

If I am spending my time looking far into the future, then I’m not enjoying myself. I know this because I remember playing games as a kid and how the game was all that mattered in those moments. There was no, “I hope this game will be fun next time I play it.” It didn’t matter because I was lost in the fun.

If that simple joy and fun is gone, then it’s not a game anymore – it’s a chore. I didn’t really have a planned coherent point to saying all of this, but I’ll improvise: Rediscover fun! That’s the part that is firmly in your control – the one part that no one else can take away from you. And it’s all of ours for the taking, regardless of what games we’re playing, from Guild Wars 2 to freeze tag in a backyard.

Or words to that effect.

For me, I stayed around with guild wars 2 for the last year just because they devs promised a lot. They made it sound like really big things were coming and that they were headed on the right track. They lied. Simple as that. They say a lot of “we’re looking into it” but when you look at what they actually work on its the same stuff as last year.

Thats why ill stop playing for now. They can’t deliver promises they made. If they start to add substantial content to spvp/wvw/dungeon and fractals. Perhaps real expansion content. Guild halls, new races, new classes, new weapon/class combinations. Then i’ll come back and play. For now, theyve proven that they can’t do this. I could be seroiusly wrong and surprised in the second season or this feature pack(would be cool).

A lot speculate about an expansion annoucement that would be very interesting. We’ll see.

Living story and personal story are largely PvE, which have little to do with the other aspect of the game. It doesn’t make those points invalid even if OP is exaggerating.

I wouldn’t mind seeing champions having full builds and a better AI.

But what you describe as failings of champions matches up with my experience of high end mobs in many games to a certain extent. Learn the tells, learn your rotation, play with your eyes closed after a while.

Even my favorite game for “active combat” has . . . shall we say, a potential for such things. (Monster Hunter series) I think my current record so far is Naked Plessy Runs. But it’s amazing what some people can do with proper practice and control. I’ve seen videos of joke weapons being used to devastating effect.

Similarly? “Solo White Mage” FF1 challenges. When you understand the game, you can do ludicrous amounts of cherry tapping.

I’ve found that set design can often contribute to combat (if the underlying physical mechanics are there) as much if not more so, than actual AI.

Take, for example, Diablo 3. Now, a lot of negative stuff can be said about it, but let’s just look at some of the combat mechanics, and ignore everything else.

In particular, things like Zombies climbing up the side of walls and ambushing your character. Or in through windows.

Or shield bearing skele’s blocking narrow pathways.

You can give an enemy one or two abilities (like the ability to dodge, or climb walls, burrow, open and close doors, position itself near other enemies for defensive purposes).

Basic behaviors. Like, when low on health retreat and apply regen (and nearby allies have abilities that only trigger when one of their friends is low on health – for example, imagine a group of trash mobs, that when one gets low, the others have an attack that applies chill or immobilize or cripple, while the injured one applies regen – but they only use this attack when a nearby ally drops to 25% health).

I’m just throwing out the most basic ideas here – by designing the encounters around the abilities, you can actually squeeze a lot of mileage out of them.

I’ve always been intrigued by things like the Ascalonian ghosts (fighters) that have the shield block.

Why not add a little pushback (knockback – but minor) to the ability, and position them in a narrow corridor?

That way, when characters approach, the shield block works like a kind of collision mechanic (without actually having collision mechanics) – this isn’t a knockdown, or even a strong knockback – just a continuous pushback as the skill is in use, causing players to slide backwards a few steps – and then, shorten the CD on this ability to like 5 sec., and let them use it as a kind of combo – sword swing, sword swing, block – sword swing, sword swing, block. Make it last about 1-2 seconds.

Neat little things like this could go a long way to making encounters more interesting.

And then, they could also have enemies draw from a random pool of preset bases (the example above with the ghosts would be one – but the same mobs could have an entirely different tactic based upon a different set of 2-3 skills, that is randomly chosen for it before combat starts) – this way, you wouldn’t know exactly what you face until combat starts.

In pen and paper games I frequently will design foes around a gimmick that makes them different than the last group, and which requires more than just, “I swing my sword, I swing it again,” style play.

On gimmick that makes a foe different, and challenging in a different way, than the player has seen in a while can make a huge difference.

Encounter design in my D&D campaign still loses to players’ ingenuity or just brute force (let’s call it the Zerker Zerg) tactics most of the time. Unless they’re completely overmatched physically.

If we’re talking about ‘playing fair’ . . .

I have not been able to construct a single encounter in D&D which couldn’t be “solved” (in terms of combat) by them just using similar bunker tactics. No matter the edition. In 2nd edition it was the Conga Line of Death through a doorway. In 3rd edition it was propping up two-weapon rangers with healing until the wizard learned Fireball, then “Tactical Maximized Fireball” became a thing. In 4th edition?

. . . let’s leave it at “I hate rogues” since properly run, they trivialize a lot of combat.

Sure, I can throw tricks at them left and right. But against competent players who know how to play their strengths? It doesn’t matter.

It’s only when I didn’t play fair they ran into issues, such as “you do realize the wizard was snatched while you slept and is a doppleganger?”. Or tailoring encounters to specifically break up their metagamed strategy.

Thats what I do.

Not always of course, gotta let ’em feel like their time spent honing their tactics are not wasted, but dragging them out of their comfort zone, kicking and screaming, has led to the game sessions the players remember (fondly) and comment on the most.

They still talk about their sojourn into the tight confines of the kobold tunnels.

Yeah, I’m just saying they could really try harder with this stuff.

What I’ve seen so far is so basic – most robs run straight at you and start hitting – or shooting, if they’re ranged.

There’s no variety – there’s no attempt to make them do anything clever at all. They never mix it up.

That’s all that’s required to at least make it amusing. It doesn’t even have to be ridiculously challenging – just quite a bit more than what we currently have.

Yeah i agree with the OP. Anet putting too much time into LS, that its making the other content bland. I use to be a hardcore WvW player (scout), but the lack of new stuff for WvW has driven me away. (Same stuff different day: Killing Dolyaks Achievement) I mean they haven’t even adress the achievements for WvW yet and this was annouced as a “to be determined” almost a year ago.
I’ve resorted to farming Dredge bags for now and crafting legendaries. I’m hoping more featured stuff appears sooner then later. (Not including the September pack coming up)… If anything thats gonna make me stop playing this game. It will be the lack of armor design and weapon we can craft or get. Too much stuff now is becoming copy and paste to me now, and gem story only items. Not variety in my book. Just my small input

Yeah, but there’s a problem . . . the devs can’t design an encounter like I did during my campaign where the goal is not to win the combat but to stall long enough for a spell to go off. Or another where the enemy is pretty much untouchable by the players and they have to puzzle out what clues they may have found while fighting to understand the big demon isn’t the problem so much as the one who summoned him.

Wait, did I say “can’t”? I meant “shouldn’t”, or “only sparingly”.

I think you are mistaking copyright infringement and plagiarism. Taking the actual word is copyright infringement. Stealing an idea and not giving credit where it is from is pretty much plagiarism. Many people do this. Plagiarism isn’t necessarily a crime but rather an ethical concern.
