Thoughts about GW2 Dulfy... -.-
You aren’t forced to read the cheevo guides, and many people would rather just follow a guide for the quickest (or one of the quickest) possible paths to their goal.
This is joke of the day topic, yeah?
and others have taken on this subject before for some personal reason.
Why does Game Pressure, IGN and other sites too numerous to mention put out detailed game guides???? People like them or check them out if they they hit a wall.
Bottom line —if YOU don’t like them don’t read them.
BTW I agree with serialkicker.
I like it, it’s nice to try a bit by myself but if something is terribly obnoxious or I can’t think of a reasonable way to do it, those guides are handy. You don’t need to use them if you don’t want to.
I had fun doing the Ember Bay jumping puzzle glancing at that guide, but I doubt I would have found the way up there by myself in a reasonable amount of time, and I certainly would not have enjoyed it.
People who spend their time cataloguing everything are extremely important to any complex game. Dulfy has done an amazing job across several MMOs, so a huge shout out to them.
As a game grows, more and more content is added. This is true especially for GW2. ArenaNet has added huge amounts of content since launch. This also means the population is more spread out – people have more to do, less people are doing the same thing. If you decide to revisit some of the older content and get stuck, that’s when Wikis and guides come in handy.
I think the large majority of people aren’t playing GW2 with a guide in hand, ticking off boxes. Most people probably look up Dulfy’s guides when they are interested in specific information – how to proceed with something you’ve been stuck on.
Keep in mind it’s an external resource, it’s not forced on to people in any way. If you want to find everything on your own, you are more than welcome to do that. If you want to play with a group of friends, you should also do that. And if you want to play the game following a guide, why not. People should play the way they find fun.
“BUT :
why are they making an achievement guide and explain everything ?!
They are spoilering around and thats boring..
Why?!"
Pro tip for the day: Don’t go to sites with information you don’t want to see.
ANet may give it to you.
1) go to website about guides
2) read a guide
3) WEEEH THIS GUIDE TOLD ME WHAT HAPPENS, WHY DOES IT EXIST!!!
I agree with the people who said don’t read it if you don’t want spoilers. That’s what I do.
I like to try and work things out for myself whenever I can so I almost never look at a guide or walkthrough. But I like to know they exist because occasionally I get completely stuck on something and need some help.
There was one vista for example where I spent about an hour trying to work it out and was getting literally nowhere, which is unusual for me. I looked it up on the Wiki but I couldn’t make sense of the walkthrough (which is not a criticism, after I finally got there I looked at re-writing it and decided I couldn’t improve it, it was just a really hard to describe route). In the end I wound up on YouTube watching a video of someone doing it and that finally enabled me to get there.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
You don’t want spoilers, you don’t read up there. So easy to fix it for yourself isn’kitten
Madness Rises [Rise] – Banners Hold.
Don’t argue with idiots, they pull you down their level and own you with experience.
It does make all achievements easier to get. People who work hard for their own ones might feel that their hard shed tears mean nothing.
I had similar feeling with some living story achievement where you had to fight a difficult boss. I had to try it like 2 hours to get it, but my friends “cheesed” their own by playing the living story with 2 players and getting it instantly : /
Overall I would still say that Dulfy and other sites are doing good and important work. The downsides of the easily accessed information they give are really small compared to the upsides.
There have been walkthroughs for almost as long as there have been games. Don’t read them if you are a fan of figuring everything out by yourself.
Not sure if you are bothered by the fact that you feel like you have to use them now that they exist or that others can take shortcuts while you prefer not to.
Don’t forget that many rewards are hidden behind some achievements people might not particularly enjoy. Trying and failing many times until you figure it out yourself does not sound too exciting to quite a few players in the community. Kind of why there are guides and explanations for almost everything now.
Dulfy is a God! (Well, my god at any rate).
i agree, the game would be much more enjoyable if all sorts of youtube, stream and guide content related to it was removed and prohibited
that way being good at the game would actually be considered as something meaningful

No amount of removing guides, videos, etc will make being good at a video game meaningful.

I like how Dulfy writes about upcoming weaponskins or gemshop items or so..

I personally don’t use guides unless I am absolutely stumped and annoyed because of that stumped situation.
Also i don’t use char build guides either, it goes complexly against who i am as a gamer I’m the type that would write a guide lol.
Guides/walkthroughs heck even cheats bots are a choice you make the choice to use them not the creator. Kinda like complaining about a guide is also a choice. It is not spoiling anything if you are willing to or wanting to use it.
Anyways, you’ve gotta be trolling for attention or something to question or complain about a guide(s). A game shortcut sheet that’s been around since the 80s it’s just how it is.

I’d rather be good in real life myself. Shoving pixels around on a computer screen…..? Naw. Doesn’t rate.
ANet may give it to you.
I appreciate Dulfy, and thank her for her time. As others have said “Don’t wanna know, don’t go read up on it”
Thread quality around here is going down a slippery slope.
why are they making an achievement guide and explain everything ?!
Because some of us appreciate the help. Maybe I’m dumb but there are things I would never figure out without guides, lol.
Thank the Six for Dulfy! There will be no dissing Dulfy! May the Six curse you with a mob of a thousand Karka hatchlings!

Maybe if the game itself gave decent clues, instead of usually no clues at all?
Like the one where you need to approach one of the anomalies to start off an achievement. After seeing them all this time it never would have occurred to me that now you approach one and now it does something. No prompt from the game. Nothing. If people didn’t tell others or if I hadn’t seen it from dulfy then I’d still not have that achievement chain started.
ANet may give it to you.
that’s true. But I was mostly thinking about jumping puzzles, raids and things that you just need to get a little more effort and figure it alone. As soon as they get a little problem: “let’s see if there is a guide somewhere!”. There is no sense of adventure. People want everything to be served them and they want it yesterday.

People used to applaud this game for not holding your hand with giant quest markers over people’s heads in quest hub towns.
Folks also seem to go gaga over things like the batwing shoulders or the strange rock (initially) because it involves having to solve the puzzle on your own.
It’s also not unreasonable to expect people to approach an anomaly that spawns in the middle of nowhere, where it has never been before.
People just want their hand held so they can blast through content. Many GW2 players are that kid who played a video game with the Prima guide open on their lap the whole time.
The good thing about Dulfy is that it’s optional. Wanna figure out things alone? Have fun. Need help? Go to Dulfy. It’s a win-win situation.
I find the OP’s comment intriguing.
For all the jokes here (good work, btw), I like how the OP is thinking. GW2’s PvE, like PvE in all current MMOs, isn’t a competition between players, it is a chore.
Should it be a competition, should (and could) there be puzzles (not jumping puzzles – which are physical tests really, like PvP rotation-training) that can’t be solved by a website?
It could be argued that the aim of PvE is to acquire more than other players, but after a while players become comfortable and satisfied with the amount of gold, stuff, dyes etc that they have. Sometimes people like to compare: “How much Karma do you have?” crops up from time to time.
I suppose the nearest thing is achievement points – and there are Dulfy guides for those.
I was reading a book, and I wondered what was on the last page and IT SPOILED EVERYTHING!
WHY DO THEY DO THIS?!

Lol.
The anomalies spawn randomly, everywhere in PvE. Except I guess in cities. How would anyone know that a randomly spawning anomaly will trigger an achievement after they’ve been spawning randomly for how long now? Weeks? And unless you’ve been camping a place how would you know that that’s a spot that it’s never spawned before? Hint. You don’t. And the spawning is client side, not in game so where you are in open PvE doesnt matter.

That lack of conveyance is almost a trademark of GW2, right along with the inane “you can’t get there from here” nonsense that HoT relied on in its map designs.
So, to Dulfy and all you awesome YouTube content producers, Thank You.

Yah. Good games give you a clue. Maybe some like to wander across the countryside, cluelessly. Interacting with everything they come across no matter how many times they’ve seen it (better go interact with that 1 millionth moa you’ve seen over there, might have an achieve that triggers if you do). This game is sadly lacking. I’m not even asking for a big clue. Certainly not some interaction exclamation mark. How about if the anomaly appears and your char says, “hmmm. That one looks different,” That’ something that isn’t hand holding and is a clue that there’s a reason to go over to the one of many anomalies seen since they’ve started appearing.

The good old days of talking to every NPC in town every time you arrived at a new place? :P

Talking to every NPC when you arrive at a new place for the first time is one thing. Talking to every NPC each and every time you go to that town and every other town for weeks, months or years on the off chance that one of them will have something new is another. For that a good game gives a clue.

I was going to do the trolls revenge jp by myself and 30min into trying to get started I realized that it was never going to happen without dulfy. When bloodstone fen came out I did all those stupid little journal pages without ever looking at a guide.
Sometimes people just need a guide to get through stuff that they find obnoxious.
I like how Dulfy writes about upcoming weaponskins or gemshop items or so..

The only why is … why are you reading it if you don’t want to be spoiled?
Sometimes Dulfy is funny, like do this impossible jump to get this item, when the intended foot path is right around the corner.
Dulfy is a datamining and guide site, if you don’t want spoilers, don’t go to the website.
Many people greatly appreciate the sheer time and effort dulfy puts in to making her guides and mining posts, and she’s always respectful of spoiler tagging on the subreddit, so I don’t see your issue

THIS! Seriously, OP is like “I go to a movie review site and they review and give plot details of the movie WTF HOW DARE THEY!!!” …
Dulfy is very upfront it’s a site for guides and datamines; you go there for such things, guides include new skin info AND spoiler guides. You are not forced to read them. They indicate spoilers in guides with spoilers.
I am unsure if the OP is naive or trolling. Sometimes hard to tell.
The only negative thing about dulfy that i see is some of their content is outdated and needs to be updated. The one that comes to mind is guild trek, since anet changed names of 1 or 2 places, and scrolling through the comments of it to find what it used to be is time consuming. And to be honest it’s not even that negative of a thing lol
Only other issue i had with a guide was the mawdrey the layout of it just confused me at first but wiki sorted it out for me, which then made the guide make more sense to me too.
But as for spoilers, it’s pretty obvious what is and isnt a spoiler so if you don’t want anything ruined, just simply don’t click on it. I know for me, im at the point in my gaming i just don’t give a hoot about achievements being spoiled and don’t have endless time to figure them out so i’ll click that guide button 100% everytime. And i avoid any possible spoilers to the story, then once story is done, then go back and read them
So go ahead and use any guide site they are amazing!!
Curse of Monkey Island had lots of guides and walkthroughs and it didn’t hamper my enjoyment in the least. Because I didn’t use them. It’s weird to complain about stuff you can easily avoid.
It’s like trying to invent gravy and complaining about existing recipes. How weird.
Everyone says “wee Need new Content” , but then if new Content Comes, everybody rushes all archievements and everything with gw2 dulfy and so on..
Think about it.
Thought about it and…again, if you don’t want to be spoiled, don’t read a guide? Do not generalize what people do, some rush achievements, some take their sweet time, some do a little mix of both, and there is no better way to do things.
Everyone says “wee Need new Content” , but then if new Content Comes, everybody rushes all archievements and everything with gw2 dulfy and so on..
Think about it.
That’s because “Everyone” and “everybody” are two different players; they have different approaches in how they play the game, different preferences about what is fun, and different interests.
Lots of people want new content and lots of people want stuff and don’t care so much about the content.
WARNING!! Don’t go to Dulfy now!!
Apparantly she uploaded a guide on the content of Wintersday, and the new open letters collection. DON’T GO THERE, you will be informed!!
Also don’t read release notes, they inform you about what’s going on.
Seriously, this topic is even about an external issue, why is it still open yet.

What a revelation! Why has no-one ever realised this before. Oh wait, after thinking about it, this statement is factually incorrect in a number of ways.
1) Everyone does not say we need new content.
2) Everybody does not rush all the achievements.
3) Everybody does not use Dulfy.
Some of us use Dulfy occasionally, for example, I used her site to find the last page in Bloodstone Fen, I was looking for about an hour for the last page then gave up, went to Dulfy and facepalmed because I must have ran/glided past it a dozen times.
As many others have said no-one has to go to any site, Dulfy is really no “worse” than the official wikis.
As for the idea that they should “ban” Dulfy or other sites/youtube channels or that no-one figures out anything anymore those notions are just as laughable as the OPs.
Also don’t read release notes, they inform you about what’s going on.
Seriously, this topic is even about an external issue, why is it still open yet.
Also, the game launcher and the front page of the website spoiled everything for everyone.

“Everyone” and “Everybody” ??? I guess you can speak for all with your absolute knowledge about everyone and everybody that plays the game.
Oh well I fell for the troll bait.
A lot of people are generalising either their own experience or their opinion on how other people play to all other players. For example: “People want everything to be served them and they want it yesterday.”, “People used to applaud this game for not holding your hand with giant quest markers over people’s heads in quest hub towns.” “If new Content Comes, everybody rushes all achievements and everything.”
I think it’s important to remember that “People” are not one uniform group who all want the same things at the same time. What one person wants is another persons nightmare situation, especially in a game.
Some people have previously praised the game for not making things too obvious, and they probably still enjoy that. Some people like it to be clearly communicated within the game and still would. Some people really couldn’t care less about the process, they just want their reward as fast as possible. Some people care about the process, but only because they hope it will slow down everyone else and then those people might be impressed that they have it. Some people like to use a player-created guide if they get stuck on a particular point. Some people like to watch a youtube tutorial before they even enter an area and then copy it exactly. Some people like to be the ones going in first and creating the guide.
I’m sure there’s dozens of other variants. And it may depend on context. When I heard there was a new jumping puzzle in Fractals I didn’t want to be told any more, I wanted to go and find it and work it out for myself. But if I hear there’s a new mini pet in the game I like to be able to look up exactly how to get it on the Wiki. (Mostly because past experience has told me JPs are permanent so I can find it and work it out in my own time but minis may be time-limited or much harder/more expensive later on so if it’s going to be difficult for me I need a plan in place now.)
Of course what this means is it’s impossible to please everyone with one approach. But in that context I think sites that provide walkthroughs are a good idea. That way if you want to work it out yourself you can do that without ever risking seeing a guide. And if you want to be told what to do, either in one part or in full, you can do that too.
the problem is people can’t do anything without dulfy anymore.
Maybe if the game itself gave decent clues, instead of usually no clues at all?

It’s funny you chose that to use as an example. This is probably the one aspect of the Current Events stuff I found out about without being told. (Well this and the posters.)
Before then the Anomaly had only appeared for a couple of seconds, barely enough time to hit the screenshot button. Then I saw one which stayed longer, so I started running towards it. I’m not sure what I was going to do (except maybe take a closer screenshot with the UI hidden), I just wanted to take the opportunity to investigate.
It still didn’t stick around for long, but as it disappeared I saw the achievement notification pop-up and that got me started on the mini ‘quest’.
