People are losing their minds over nothing here. Nothing has been explained here. The only thing that even your precious news sites said was that the ascended “items” are better than exotics. That does not mean they will be required for anything. That does not mean it’s a new tier of armor. That does not mean that you’re exotic armor is worthless.

That. does. not. mean. anything. People are blowing this out of proportion with having little to no information about it. Even the “news” sites people seem so fond of referring to don’t have anything on them more than “they’re better than exotic”. NOWHERE does it say anything about Ascended Items even being armor.

They are better! How can they not make Exotics obsolete? Why aren’t you playing with all level 80 blues and telling people around you that it doesn’t matter, exotics are only slightly better anyway.

If they are only 1% better, why make them better in the first place and put that much emphasis on the fact? If they are really better, why wouldn’t they make Exotics obsolete?

Also, let me repeat that

“The patch will introduce ascended items. Ascended armors are “slightly more powerful than exotics” and can, in some cases, hold slots for infusions. Infusions will allow you to increase your character’s power."

Notice the “Ascended armors are (…)” part. Here you go, Ascended armor is better than exotic armor.

READ. READ BEFORE YOU POST.

It says (even in your quote) ITEMS. not ARMOR. ITEMS. ITEMS. ITEMS.

Ascended ITEMS being better than Exotic ITEMS != GEAR treadmill. There has been no indication that any ARMOR or GEAR is Ascended. Just that there are NEW (leading to believe not things in the game currently) ITEMS that are of Ascended quality.

L2Read please.

Regarding “items” versus “gear”, you’re grasping at straws.

Also, this is the quote on the GW2 main page for The Lost Shores:

Introducing Ascended items, artifacts of great power that can be improved by a special new type of upgrade called Infusions, which can be found in dungeons. Look for more information about Ascended GEAR soon!

Emphasis mine.

If you want to nitpick and grasp at straws, maybe you should actually take the time to read the copy yourself, because it says BOTH “ascended itemsAND “ascended gear”.

So sorry, but “gear” appears in the usage with ascended, so trying to claim it’s not gear is futile. Telling people to “L2Read” when you didn’t bother to take the time to do it yourself is seriously laughable.

What trickles of information? There is only one real sentance that matters and that is the one that says: Ascended gear will be better than exotics.

That right there is proof they are going tier gear route now. So every month or two they will up the bar making previous sets worse and new ones better. Hello typical MMO gear treadmill!

Don’t quote unless you can do it properly. It says Ascended Items will be of better quality than Exotic Items currently found in game. Key word here is ITEMS. ITEMS != GEAR. We have no idea what kind of items these even are so let’s reign in some of that hyperbole, shall we?

If only we knew what kind of items!

With great challenges come great rewards. The patch will introduce ascended items. Ascended armors are “slightly more powerful than exotics” and can, in some cases, hold slots for infusions. Infusions will allow you to increase your character’s power.

Also GEAR

This basically implies that these will be a higher level of quality for all armor and weapon items. If you read a bit further it even states that there will be similar items added to old dungeons.

Analyzing the various sources, it seems that the (old and new) dungeons will offer the infusions while ascended will be some new tier of armor with an infusion slot (gained from god knows what but if its from any token exchange, they better offer an upscaling otherwise A LOT of us wasted a lot of time). Probably something along the lines of: CoF offers an infusion to armor that grants +X fire damage or something like that.

Which is, admittedly, quite idiotic since we’re then forced to farm some other dungeon in order to do a new dungeon to get the best +X stat or whatever they put in these infusions.

The only way out of this, as I see it, is to make this a purely backslot item. Why? Because exotic versions don’t exist. It stops at rare, and from there they can introduce just about any tier they want: Ubergodlydoom Tier, for all I care and it can have a billion infusions slots. No one in the game had this slot maxed, so no ones work is rendered moot. They just add more stuff to work towards and you can fill in the infusion slot(s) by doing whatever the heck you want and add new slots as new content is added, giving a pseudo-progression to one item slot.*

*Infusions are obviously banned from WvW.

I have a question for all those that keep quoting outside sources. I just went back re-read what A-NET posted on this very site and all it said was “New Ascended Gear & Infusions
Introducing Ascended items, artifacts of great power that can be improved by a special new type of upgrade called Infusions, which can be found in dungeons. Look for more information about Ascended gear soon!” I have no doubt that the stats may be better than exotics, especially to keep up with the dungeon, but how much more powerful these new items will be has not been officially stated by A-net yet, nor all the way you can get the items. What if it’s possible to get the items by simply playing the game rather than only the dungeon? So unless I’m missing something, all these statements from other sources about these new items is nothing but speculation, and an attempt by the news outlets to attract attention.

Whenever a discussion like this comes up, there’s always people who say, “No one is forcing you to get the gear. You can do everything fine with normal gear.”

All I can do in response is just sigh. These people just possess such a lack of understanding of human nature and social psychology. Bottom line is, gear progression, no matter how slight, affects both the game and the social aspect of the game.

On to a more important point…

A premise in this game was that there would be no vertical progression, only horizontal, so why go back on that word? Why destroy the trust of so many consumers? Sure, some people may welcome this change. But if Arenanet’s promises mean nothing, what else do you think they would do in the future? For instance, how would you feel if they decided to put subscriptions, “buy to win” options in the gem market, and make legendaries obsolete?

Everyone in this kitten thread is grasping at straws. That’s the point. This thread is worthless until there’s a confirmation. Glad to see I caught the attention of the King of Complaints too. I’ve seen you post in every thread about every change Anet has made preaching the end of the world. Seems things haven’t changed despite you always being wrong.

Sorry you embarassed yourself by not bothering to read the actual site, then going on an absurd rant about items not being gear and “gear” never appearing next to “ascended” (despite that it does, right at the end of the sentence), but it’s hardly my problem that you were wrong and decided to be condescending to everyone without actually bothering to fact check your own post.

Maybe next time before telling people to “L2Read” you should do some reading yourself, instead of frothing at the mouth about something you are objectively wrong about (which was also easily proven, with a tiny amount of gasp reading).

I didn’t read the 30 pages of this (sorry), and people are posting too quickly for this to even be seen, but remember how infusions worked in GW1? By “more powerful”, it might just be against enemies in this particular zone, just like the infused gear in GW1 was good/necessary against Mursaat and Spectral Agony. To get to the harder part of the new dungeon, you’ll need particular infusions. I doubt the new gear will be a filter when LFG for other dungeons or make you any better in WvW. It’s just something to do. Some of the audience likes the gear grind (if this amounts to that), but I’m assuming that the rest of us won’t see negative effects from this. ANet knows what they are doing…

Ok we dont have Legendary armour yet and ascended armour is a new tier with the same idea of infusing. By the sounds of the new enemy and future enemies we will have to use different infusions just to hurt them. Such as mursaat we had to be infused just to fight them without dying. These new guys sounds like we need to figure out how to hurt them and being infused helps us with that. We dont know fully how the ascended armour works. For instance they could be the only armour that allows infusion but at the cost of runes or orbs not being placed in them. So if they are not able to have the extra effects they need the boost just be in the same league of exotics.

This seems like a brilliant situation for the community managers to do their jobs and actually manage the community rather than stirring them up into a rage fuelled hype storm, antagonising them on Twitter and refusing the clarify any details when the community clearly found issue and concern with information released. I hope the publicity and hype is worth tormenting so many of your customers with a predictably inflammatory piece of information that should have been managed better.

Why troll your players when you could easily clarify the whole mess now? What are community managers for if they aren’t going to step in, with factual information, and clarify issues the community is clearly direly (regardless of whether it’s founded or not) concerned about?

Their inability to be flexible and respond to and clarify player concerns is astounding. The internet is going to find controversy and disappointment in everything, but the stubborn refusal to respond to their concerns with simple clarifications is continually disappointing. This is an exceptional situation.

Whether something like armor is optional or not is decided by the players, not the developers. If people ask that you have ascended infused armor for anything, you’ll have to have it or be left out. It wont be an option when everyone ask that you have it.

I have yet to see a credible argument against this new tier of gear. The only argument I’ve seen so far is that 5 levels of gear is some extreme limit and a 6th tier is magically gamebreaking.

I don’t think most people who are on here understand what a “gear treadmill” is. A conventional gear treadmill is when a certain level of gear is required to progress in the content. There has been no indication or even hint of this being the case. All current explorable mode dungeons and DE’s can currently be completed in level 80 blues. This means there is currently no gear treadmill in the game.

I have also seen absolutely no indication in ANY of the linked articles that this will become the case when adding the new tier of gear. If someone has a link that says new content will REQUIRE you to be in ascended gear I would love to see it. Until that time you are just misusing words and building strawman arguments.

*Note: saying that people will start saying that you need Ascended armor to run a certain dungeon is not a valid argument as that is already in the game. People already say you need to be level 80 and in exotics to run certain dungeons even though it is not required. This is in no way changed by replacing the word “exotic” with the word “ascended”

My favourite thing about the idea that all of this discussion of a potential increase in vertical progression is “useless” and “grasping at straws”, because ArenaNet haven’t said anything directly (despite there being multiple independent sources of second-hand information from ArenaNet that all corroborate each other), is that it goes nowhere, no matter how ArenaNet eventually ends up responding (and wasn’t that blog post promised like 6-7 hours ago already? That is a hell of a hold up!):

Possibility 1)
– ArenaNet reveals that yes, Ascended equipment will represent a vertical increase in player power. In which case, I guess, every single argument against it in this thread will magically flip from being irrelevant, useless straw-grasping, to being totally on-point and relevant to the issue at hand.

Possibility 2)
– ArenaNet reveals that no, Ascended equipment will not be a vertical, statistical improvement over Exotic equipment. In which case everybody breathes a sigh of relief and goes on with their day – and in which case this entire thread stands as a monument to the community’s stance on further vertical progression, with many, many more negative responses than positive ones, and ArenaNet can point to this thread internally any time the subject comes up again during internal decisionmaking time.

So whether people are right or wrong about what they think this is going to be, the feedback is still valuable and important to the development of the game. Why try to stifle it?

In which case everybody breathes a sigh of relief and goes on with their day – and in which case this entire thread stands as a monument to the community’s stance on further vertical progression, with many, many more negative responses than positive ones, and ArenaNet can point to this thread internally any time the subject comes up again during internal decisionmaking time.

So whether people are right or wrong about what they think this is going to be, the feedback is still valuable and important to the development of the game. Why try to stifle it?

My biggest concern with this thread it attitude. Everyone keeps saying this WILL ruin the game, when the fact is none of us has any idea what is actually going on.

And just as I bought exotic armor for my ele and transmutated everything to look like I wanted it they make it kitten useless.

I was already losing interest, that new armor tier kitten make my interest drop even lower.

I hope they are at least not more of those kitten ugly copypasta named armor.

Out of curiosity why were you “already losing interest?”

i think they ve so much possibility to make new content with new skills for exemple,
more skill, more combination more team play where they can work on and put more content base on it,
so its realy bad now and for the future if they chose the way of progression with stats/stuff grinding

I think lot of ppl play GW2 because they said at the beginig, game base on skills not on the gear…

if they realy put new tier lvl gear i will go to ask refund, is not for the money, because i dont think they will refund and i dont mind, but is more for the “tenet”

Sorry for my english ^^

does no one on this forums play gw1? its just infuse armor >_<

That would be fine, but no of those articles sounds like that.

We have to wait for the official statement and until then we can’t do anything expect showing Arena Net that we won’t be happy if they would add a new tier of gear.

speak for yourself. I would be very happy.

Except you stopped playing after a month like you did TSW and went to WoW. Not to mention all the badmouthing you do about this game.

Gear treadmills is the worst type of content to keep people playing. As it is that’s exactly what they open the doors for with what is said.

Do I know you? I’m still subbed to TSW. What does any of this have to do with me being happy that Anet listened to it community and added progression?

What community your talking about ? Because Guild Wars was always played because it has horizontal progression. No gear progression in team of tiers or better stats ..

If you are talking about wow community .. okey then

Uh, I don’t know about you, but until now, I’ve been seeing a lot of people saying there was no progression or anything to keep them interested (including complaints of no gear progression). And it wasn’t just here and there either, these complaints were being brought at least as much as this issue is being brought up now.

That make sence becose the rest was happy with the current system . no gear progression. They didnt need to complain or post anything, everyone were just playing the game.

And btw if you use brain, you can clearly see that community dont want gear progression .. 30 pages in few hours against this change is prove that community dont want this.

I don’t have a problem with people not wanting vertical gear progression. What I’m saying is that we should wait for the blog post before flipping out completely.

You don’t have to unless you want to. Are you so worried that if you don’t have those few percent you can’t compete?

Every single stat point matters in PvP. Guy with 100 more power/toughness/vit is at the advantage. Plus there is this infusion thing they stated which will make your char more powerful. This right there means you have to have this gear to PvP in Wv3.

This also means that PvEers will have access to the best gear while the PvPers get nothing in Wv3 unless they grinds this dungeon too. Yea, ok.

p.s. ANet bodly claimed they wanted Skill > Gear. Ascended gear announcement now means Gear > Skill. GG?

What is the #1 complaint about this game? Lack of progression. Ascended armor is the answer to the question. Good for them for listening.

There is enough content for the “hardcore casual” give the rest of us something.

really no, the first complain is lack of endgame, and you can make an endgame when people are ready to reach that end.

now most of us are geared, its time for the challenges! (and if its only for skins, its good enough for me.) The new dungeon is the right thing, not the new tier!

Well I’m happy Anet disagrees with you. Hooray for progression! Now if we could get a 10 man dungeon. These things give guilds a reason to stay.

So a “problem” with vertical scaling is being able to easily defeat things when you get more powerful. Actually, that’s just a matter of logic, if you can compete with a higher class of monster then the previous one suddenly doesn’t look so great.

No, a treadmill is a very valid analogy. You may be getting stronger than those bears, but your relative power to the highest tier of PvE content is still the same. The next tier is balanced with owning the previous tier of gear in mind, so comparatively, you’re as powerful vs. the latest baddie as you were vs. the previous baddie before you ground out said baddie’s gear.

It’s an illusion of progress.

I don’t agree with having to raid for the best gear or barriers of entry, but having to save a lot of money or collect a lot of mats should be viable too (shouldn’t be cheap just accessible via non dungeon means). But that’s the thing, we face bigger threats and need to power up accordingly or else it’ll get too boring, the next guy always has to be a bigger threat than the last to raise the stakes, since if he isn’t you know he could be defeated. Though there are better ways than having to grind battlegrounds and dealing with people who blame you for losing if you do just to be competitive for arenas and being locked out of dungeons because of not having raid gear.

Cosmetic rewards, titles, and achievements are a great incentive, but the practical nature of our times dictates that it isn’t enough for most people unfortunately. I have a legendary and plenty of dyes so I care about appearance but not everyone shares that mindset.

It’s ArenaNet’s fault for posting such info that sent the community flipping out in the first place. It’s their way of handling the community that is at fault and shows their community managers are bad at their jobs.

Or maybe they ARE good at their jobs and all that is according to plan. To that I’d say that causing and taking advantage of such negative reactions from the community, and all that on purpose is borderline evil.

I was happy to finally have found a game where the treadmill for gear was nonexistant.

Don’t care if its armor, weapon, or rings. I was lied to. I was told that there wasn’t going to be a gear treadmill. That the exotics that I got would last me forever. That just the skins would change.

Spent all this time getting the look I wanted. I don’t do dungeons. This essentially kills the game for me. Not to mention completely unfriendly NA times for one time events. And all the asdsa, kfdss, adasw, people running around (I allude to that without talking about it since a ban would be unfortunate).

The lack of an official reply or more information means a bunker mentalility, and before I waste a minute more of my time, that before 3 months are out the promises are broken, its time for me to leave.

So this is my goodbye.

A very small amount of people wanted that and considering Anet made it clear all the way from when they first started showing the game off that there would be no treadmill then the people asking for it shouldn’t really be listened too as they don’t listen themselves.

Also, to the community, I believe most of you should wait to see what happens before expressing your rage/intent to quit and/or other negative hyperbole.

The problem with this logic is that if players “wait and see” it will be too late because once players have their hands on and invest in the new armor set, the backlash would be that much worse if it was nerfed to the level it SHOULD be. This thread, while it may contain a lot of unnecessary i quit posts, it simply the community voicing loudly their opinions about a press release that was quite clear in its wording. The following is quoted from that press release. Clearly, people who bought into this game for its “No Gear Treadmill” mantra are going to be upset. We feel lied to. False advertisement is a problem and while people may have had a blast up until now, many will refuse to hop on the treadmill. Such is my American right. No more treadmills.

http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/11/12/guild-wars-2s-lost-shores-content-primer/

“The patch will introduce ascended items. Ascended armors are “slightly more powerful than exotics” and can, in some cases, hold slots for infusions. Infusions will allow you to increase your character’s power."

Signed.

I hope to see some more details that clear things up, till then i will hold on with my supportive monthly gem pruchase.

After ~7 years of Guild Wars it would be sad to say goodbye to arena.

There is always complain about no endgame. In every mmorpg. I know it, ive played everyone released for past 10 years. From wow, rift, aoc, vanguard, tera, aion .. to lotro, etc

I play and bought gw because it has horizontal progression. If they change is .. bye bye

And if you think I dont want gear progression cause I am casual, you are wrong. I have 900 hours played in GW 2. I ve done about 200+ explorables and If they introduce new tier of Armor I would be one of the first wearing this armor in the world. But thats not what I want … Thats why I quit wow

If anyone think that gear progression would make Guild Wars 2 better game, you are just naive and wrong

Salix Babylonica (Necro), Tharnath (Guardian), N Faculty (Mesmer),
Occam Pi (Ele), Acaena Elongata (Warrior), Finja Salversdotir (Ranger),

A premise in this game was that there would be no vertical progression, only horizontal, so why go back on that word? Why destroy the trust of so many consumers? Sure, some people may welcome this change. But if Arenanet’s promises mean nothing, what else do you think they would do in the future? For instance, how would you feel if they decided to put subscriptions, “buy to win” options in the gem market, and make legendaries obsolete?

The problem is that ANet was kind of bathing in the fame of being a correct, creative team that made a game that lasted for 7 years without becoming a cash cow. But the new players only know that because they were being told. We, old GW fans experienced it as the game was evolving, and the very implication that such a gear treadmill idea have ever been even just taken into consideration at all already compromises that image.

This is nothing like usual ANet behavior.
It is awfully similar to what dev teams do after being taken over by giants like EA. Trickery and betrayal for money in every corner.

People were kinda already having problems with the game, and now, after numerous threads about how GW2 should take steps closer to GW1, ANet just takes a step even farther away.

So the question is given: Exactly who are these people who were requesting this change, and why do them matter? First and foremost, this francishe had a policy. I haven’t ever seen Coca Cola change their logo in the last 100 years. If somebody doesn’t like that, he can go drink something else; Coca Cola will still have costumers.

The same thing applies here. Let’s have a little backbone and keep this a Guild Wars game. I do not even know why this needs to be posted at all. The very idea of GW1 and GW2 was to beat the general MMO rules. If somebody is bored because of that, he can go play something else.

Let’s not let the tail wag the dog.

Last point like to make, with this new gear they will make older dungeons totally obsolete. Only reason to go back is for skins, other wise you would be wasting time getting inferior gear from them. Better to go to new dungeon. More and more this game is starting to look like that ‘other’ game. That is terrible imo.
