I stopped playing gw2 for a week because I hated the new pvp matchmaking system so much. It keeps matching me with premades while always pairing me with 1st time pvpers! It got so frustrating, I just gave up on gw2 altogether! No reason to log in anymore!

So I tried another MMO. But it is worse! GW2 has changed my standard for mmo’s, and made me realize the things that I took for granted:

  • Questing is easier with the heart system compared to old-school questing system where you have to backtrack everything.
  • No Trinity! You are independent! No more having to search for healers or tankers. And as for me, I’ve always been forced to play a healer because of this, and I hated being a healer. Now I can be anything I want to be!
  • Map exploration is really fun, unlike other mmo’s where map is dull and dead. You see a mountain but can’t climb it, in GW2, it is a jumping puzzle! Not to mention, the NPCs are more intelligent compared to other MMOs. They talk, walk, run, fight just like players, and their conversations are always interesting!
  • The combat system itself. Can dodge, can move while casting, fast paced!
  • Instanced mining/harvesting node/anything that can be “interact”-ed. Nothing more annoying than seeing a node and another player already mined it so you just have to find another one.
  • Gain exp/loot/quest credit on enemy tag. Other MMO’s have the first-hit or last-hit reward system in killing mobs. It’s annoying! In GW2, just tag it and you can get rewards.
  • Can only bring 10skills at a time. Unlike other mmo’s where the sky is the limit on your skillbar! No thinking required. Just fill that skillbar!
  • Ability to range/melee on command. Well except for eles and engies.

And so much more! Thing is, this game is far from perfect but it definitely is WAAAAY better than any MMO out there. So I guess I’m done with playing MMO’s until they fix the PvP matchmaking system. Anet what have you done to me. Haha

If you close your mind to new information, you are not being a productive member of the society.
You are the useless log of flesh we have to drag behind us as we move forward.

No, it’s not better.

Or, it’s not better than the game I played before.

It looks better, it’s more female-friendly than the other game’s current xpac (visually speaking) and levelling is more fun, but it’s not fundamentally better.

In fact, it’s definitely worse.

A few months ago (during the LS2 dryspell) I was a bit bored of GW2 and saw that Aion was F2P. Downloaded it, played it twice for a few hours and haven’t touched it since.

I totally agree with you Nezia.

It’s certainly those little things that we take for granted. Even if the story or graphics (or some other aspect) of another game is better, it’s the simple and user-friendly things that draw me back… purely because GW2 isn’t a frustrating game to play.

(The things that bugged me in Aion because of GW2 experience: can’t attack whilst moving, skill/skill bar functionality, grindiness, losing a resource node if you walk/cast whilst gathering, resource nodes aren’t personal, characters looking like pieces of art whilst the scenery was potato, the way that aggro worked, confusing/different hotkeys… and I forget the rest).

I can’t hardly play other MMOs now after I have played GW2 for so long. I never really got too into other MMOs, played a bit of SWTOR when it came out Played EVE for a few years (but that is not like most MMOs), played ESO when it was in beta, and I dabbled in some others (no I have never played WoW) but when I got Guild Wars 2, I sunk 500 hours in it within a year, which for me is a lot of time.

When Neverwinter came to consoles, my console player brother convinced me to try the PC version, and I found myself hating it because I played Guild Wars so much and loved it. The combat seemed slow (for a game that actually advertises fast paced combat) the story seemed meh, the quest givers were just giant paragraphs, the armor designs were eh, and I just didn’t like it.

Until a game that is exactly like Guild Wars 2 comes out and does everything it does better, I can’t see myself playing another MMO honestly. Especially because this has no sub fee

Well, I’m not going to go too deeply into the subjective/objective thing, here, but I will just say that when, for example, certain design decisions encourage boring and very rigid gameplay solutions, that is (I would have thought) objectively speaking worse than a game without those problems.

I wouldn’t mind betting that this game is better than a lot of games, of this genre, out there.

So, I’m not overly surprised that people think it’s the best, especially if they haven’t tried its (and every MMO’s, still) main rival.

It’s probably the second best game of this type I’ve tried, personally and in some (more aesthetic) ways, quite possibly the first.

Unfortunately, looks aren’t everything.

Honestly, this is what does it for me too, but especially the bolded part. I used to play WoW and I sunk a couple hundred dollars into that just for monthly subscription fees. I felt like I had to play, so I chose to no longer pay for it. GW2 comes around, as good as it is, and doesn’t have a subscription fee? I don’t care how good anyone else’s game plays if it’s going to cost 10-30 times as much to play it compared to this one.

  • The combat system itself. Can dodge, can move while casting, fast paced!

Agree on all counts but this one, the dodge system just is not done well , almost immediately after launch ‘you can dodge’ became ‘there is no point to investing in any defense or utility except dodge’, completely ruining build and play diversity.

Meanwhile more and more games adopt some kind of active dodge system. Neverwinter and wildstar have the exact same system as GW2 (except without the ability to move while casting in the case of neverwinter), while DCUO has an improved system where blocking and dodging can be pierced by certain skills, all while allowing movement (even climbing, flying, and using super speed) during casting, and it came out a year before GW2.

Nothing much, just that, aesthetically, I find it more female-friendly than some other games.

Some of it is almost sickeningly sweet, TBH, but on the whole it’s nice and it’s definitely less overtly male-looking than some other games.

When I refer to male/female, here, I obviously mean in a purely conventional, completely stereotypical, hetero type way.

I’m not trying to say that all men only like darkness, spikes and Orcs and that all women only like pink, fluffiness and unicorns; as I am fully aware that there are overlaps and in fact, complete reversals, in tastes and associations.

However, as a hetero woman, I personally find the design philosophy less overtly, conventionally “straight male” than some other games.

Which, on balance, I (not surprisingly, I suppose) find more appealing.

I find the game more accessible and freer to play terms of what i am able to do. The fact I am not shut out of content due to gear gates and that downscaling means I can enjoy content anywhere is the biggest appeal to me.

There are games that do just story or atmosphere or questing better and those I jump to in limited spurts. But, GW2 does the whole package I want really well, so here is where I will spend the bulk of my time and where I will benchmark (perhaps unfairly) other games.

I’ve only recently started playing GW2 again since its launch. I still actively play World of Warcraft. I played FF14 recently. And all around I’ve played numerous other MMORPGs.

They are all different. Plain and simple. Not better or worse. Just different. There are two sides to every coin in life, and that includes every game design decision. What one person counts as a negative, another will count as a positive.

I enjoy all of the titles I just mentioned. If I had enough time in my life I would play all three of them. And would explore other games too! Variety is the spice of life. I go raid in WoW and thoroughly enjoy a system where everyone has very distinct roles and you feel like an individual. I am the hunter, and during this phase I need to do this thing, because my class is good at it. And even among my class, I can distinguish myself amongst other hunters with my skill at accomplishing the task. I can shine individually.

After raid I jump in to GW2, go to silver wastes, and enjoy the fluid combat system in which I am completely self reliant. I don’t need a tank. I can use evasion, conditions, and boons to mitigate my own damage and heal myself if needed. Fighting the various Vine Wrath bosses is like raiding in WoW, but with a totally different flavor. Instead of having to coordinate with 15 other people in a setting where 1 mistake could kill us all, I am zerging with so so many more people, battling monsters with mechanics that will one shot you, and in the mass chaos of the brawl it will eventually take you down. But that zerg of people will rush to lift you back up on to your feet. This alone is a profoundly cool difference between the games. I feel that in GW2, you are fully expected to go down. There is no healer spamming you to keep you alive, and no, there’s no tank. You’re gonna eat dirt sometimes. But unlike many other MMOs where you can’t raise a fallen ally in battle, GW2 lets you be triage and get eachother back up. Without limit.

In WoW you work together closely because you can only do 1 thing well, and therefore you NEED your comrades. In GW2 you work together because even if you can do everything, your enemies can and will outright overwhelm you if you are alone. And if you slip up and make a mistake, you can always pick each other back up for another try.

I feel like people that are looking for the “best” MMO to sink all their time in to are missing out. Especially with GW2 as an option. It’s free to play! There’s no reason you can’t jump on here and enjoy this flavor whenever you like. And in the end, if you just play one game all the time, you will end up bored and unsatisfied with it. It doesn’t matter how good the game is. If you do the same thing enough, it will get boring. That’s all there is to it.

Gw2 has always made me appreciate other mmos more. Not sure why, but it has. It might be the lack of “endgame” or the lack of competition and difficult content. Not too sure, really. All I know is that playing gw2 has rekindled my liking to several mmos that were played in my past.
Gw2 is still about the 4th best mmo in my eyes.

*Questing is easier, but its still the same system with a fresh coat of paint. It’ll be nice when an MMO comes out that actually changes this system.

*No trinity, but the game is lending to meta builds being required (by the playerbase) for instances, which just as bad. Yes, this can be avoided, but its still a tendency that this game has not figured out how to avoid – though they have lessened it from the trinity problems.

*Gains on tagging…..blessing and a curse. Leads to a lot of tag-and-go-afk gameplay on bosses and events. Lends itself to leeching players who lets others do the work as long as they tag it, they get the same reward for nothing. Better than in most other MMO’s, but still has its share of problems.

*Only 10 skills at a time, making no-thinking required is probably quite a ranged preference. No-thinking required isn’t something I look for in an MMO…or any game, really.

GW2 has honed and put a fresh coat of paint on many aspects of the MMO-genre and does it well, though many of their solutions are still carrying some forms of the same flaws inherent to the genre.

Hate is a strong word. However, i have grown to find a lot of gameplay increasingly uninteresting and repetetive. To the extent that i uninstalled the game a couple days ago and plan to take a solid break. I couldnt answer the question of where i was having fun or what my goals were for repeating the same things over and over.

Mentioning the graphical aesthetics or the natire of the heart quests doesnt make any of my current feelings on various topics less so. Nor will they for anyone who feels similarly.

Every game has a burnout level. That’s why I only play Free to play games anymore. It may be buy to play, but no subs, so I can walk away, do other things, then come back. The longer I stay away the more there is to do and keep my attention when I get back.

I’m still working my way through Season 2. Then I gave that a break to level up all my alts. That doesn’t stop me from going to play other MMOs when they introduce new things. I don’t compare this game to that game or that other game, they’re not the same. They each have things that I’m happy with and other things I’m not satisfied with. That’s the nature of video games. I agree that every game does have a burn out level, but I sometimes find it hard to believe that this is the same company that brought us GW1, I played that game everyday for 7 years, GW2 I understand is a completely different game, but 2 1/2 years in and im nearly all done,

I used play for several hours a day, now I play for less than 10 minutes ( I log in for daily login and run the dailies as fast as possible ) there is nothing else in the game that keeps me wanting to play, farming is terrible, loot is non existent, ( unless you want to run around mindlessly opening chests in SW )

All of the people i used to play with have all left the game, they moved onto other games, so much so that the new expansion wont bring them back, that says a lot.

I sometimes feel the right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing at Anet, they know what they want to do, or at least what they want to try and do, the new expansion may bring people back it may bring new people into the game, but how many people will abandon the game before then?

With Season 2 ending until new expansion there is a what 5-8 month wait time, people have been crying out for SAB for over a year and got totally fobbed off by Anet on this matter, something that will keep these people PLAYING the very game that brings the $$$ in for Anet, yet they ignore it, and say, heres another outfit in the gem store buy it today cha ching, that’s what causes people to start hating this game.

I always thought block worked out pretty well… just saying.

No, it’s not better.

Or, it’s not better than the game I played before.

It looks better, it’s more female-friendly than the other game’s current xpac (visually speaking) and levelling is more fun, but it’s not fundamentally better.

In my opinion, it’s definitely worse.

FTFY. And if you love that other game so much why not go play it, instead of complaining about how much you dislike this one because it’s not like that one?

Because, as I already explained, some things about the current incarnation of that game were annoying me to the point that I was no longer enjoying it as much as I should have been.

Obviously, that is my opinion.

No need to edit my post to suit your whims.

Especially as I doubt very much that you would have bothered had I gushed about how great this game was, in every way.

Then a definitive answer would have been fine, right?

True I wouldn’t have edited if you’d done that. I would have read it, thought “My god what a moron no point even talking to them” and skipped merrily on my way happy in the knowledge that I don’t know them in real life. You seemed vaguely correspondence worthy but I’m beginning to rethink that stance as well.

So, I would be moronic for saying I liked everything about the game, but as I said I didn’t like everything, I had to be edited by you to ensure everyone realised it was my opinion?

I tend to think you’re fibbing, because it’s pretty obvious that what annoyed you about my post was my criticism and the only way you felt you could counter that feeling of annoyance was by editing me.

If you wanted a chat, you could have just said so…

Got no issue with criticism. Got my own issues with the game as well (before you call me out Traits (being fixed), Storyline (being fixed), removal of WvW from map comp (not gonna be re-instated), unfriendliness of guild missions to small guilds (still doable just a pain in the kitten).)

My real issue was the way you walked into the thread and basically turned round and said “No! Your opinions and things you like about this game are wrong! The whole game is kitten!”. So that’s my issue with you. Rephrase it constructively and I couldn’t give a flying kitten (and yes I think that just spewing love over everything is about as constructive and moronic as spewing bile everywhere).

I wasn’t contradicting the OP.

I was merely disagreeing with their assessment and trying to do it in a succinct way (for once).

The problem is, you can’t win with this type of stuff.

Because, while I was brought up (as a female) to say “in my opinion” and “I think” and “I feel” every sentence, just in case I offended someone like you, I have also been told, by other people since, that I shouldn’t dither around like that and that I have every right to just state my opinion in a straightforward way.

Also, if you read the OP’s post, s/he didn’t say “I think”, or “I feel”, or “in my opinion”; s/he just said it all like it was fact (which is, at least partly, why I responded as I did).

So, why am I being singled out, here?

Pretty obviously, because I have said something you don’t like (either on here, or on another thread), whereas, the OP hasn’t.

BTW, I’m logging now.

So, I guess you’ll have to find someone else to talk to.

  • Can only bring 10skills at a time. Unlike other mmo’s where the sky is the limit on your skillbar! No thinking required. Just fill that skillbar!

*Only 10 skills at a time, making no-thinking required is probably quite a ranged preference. No-thinking required isn’t something I look for in an MMO…or any game, really.

I believe what Nezia was saying is that the OTHER games don’t require you to think. Because you can pack every skill and the kitchen sink on your skill bars, you don’t have to think about what you really need. In GW2, the limited number of choices makes it much more important that you pick the right skills, and understand when you need to change them.

Here’s the thing.

I agree that Anet has done a great job with GW2 on the whole. Compared to others, its a great game. unfortunately the problems they’ve introduced and the handling of player concerns have been VERY problematic for me.

Its like this:

Imagine you’ve gone to a nice restaurant that you’ve looked forward to eating at for a long time. The meal starts of with a great appetizer that you’d rank a 9 out of 10. Then your main dish comes out and its fabulous. You’re enjoying yourself and they even bing out some extra to “top off” your meal again half way through. Problem is about 2 bites in you find a roach. in your food. When you ask for the wait staff to deal with this problem they all seem to disappear to the kitchen somewhere and no one comes around no matter how much you wave your hands in the air to get their attention. Hours pass and still no one comes by until the host pops up and assures you someone will come by to speak to you. A few more hours go by and no one comes. After a short while the host comes back and lets you know that the cooks and servers are working on fixing the problem for you, but they don’t have an idea when they will be out with that fix and in the meantime you can just eat around the roach.

Still after some more time you hear that they are planning on serving a second and new round of dinner dishes, and sometime during that phase of second dinner they plan on dealing with your roach issue, but still no one comes to actually deal with your roach issue.

Mind you, it isn’t like you’ve not seen some wait staff dealing with OTHER issues at other tables during this time, because they have been there.

I’m sorry, but for those of us unhappy with the game in its current state…we’ve grown tired of staring at the “roach” in our “food” and being told that it will be addressed, eventually.

This is how I look at it too. I was a very avid player, much involved in theorycrafting and trying out new builds. But I can’t explore the world a third time – 2 of my characters have explored everything and finished the personal story. It felt…like a let down. I tried WvW for quite a while, but that has so many issues that it has become more frustrating than pleasurable. I am still holding out hope that HoT will address many of my concerns, but given Dry Top/Silverwastes, am not so sure.

But, the OP is correct. The alternatives are worse. Tried ESO (wow…they so blew that one), Rift, and a couple of others. Not nearly as smooth as GW2. So, am stuck in that limbo state of wanting to play an MMO, but not really enjoying the one I am playing.

I find Silverwastes to be one of the few areas they did right personally. Dry Top is another story, it is just poorly designed.

My concern regarding Silverwastes is that it requires way too much group coordination for any success. Given Megaserver, sometimes you get into a situation in which you cannot successfully even navigate SW let alone successfully complete a defense or offense against a keep. As for Dry Top, as you say, it is badly designed. I am so scared that Maguuma is going to be one, big jumping puzzle.

About 6 years ago I was so addicted to Flyff, I had spent years playing that game, after it fell to shambles after version 12, I quit the game I loved and still miss it’s glory days til this day, I have been searching for years for an MMO to replace Flyff, I’ve played almost every F2P, I’ve played WoW, ESO, FF14, etc.. (FF14 came close to being my replacement of Flyff, but RMT’s and farming bots along with the crappiest customer service I’ve ever seen in a company made me leave that game after a couple of months), I had bought this game in 2012 and I never really gave this game a chance until earlier this year, and now I feel like such a fool, this game is phenomenal to me now. It’s starting to bring me those feelings that Flyff use to give me. Most of the community seems friendly and I’m just in general very happy with GW2 and look forward to spending years in this game.

The positive aspect that I find about SW is that even without group effort you can still contribute to the map as a whole and be rewarded. While doing breach and VW does require coordination, offense on forts isn’t hard to do solo, you just need to be patient, defense can be difficult.

E: Now that I think about it, it can be difficult based off of class as well. I have no issues in SW on my Ele or Guardian, but my Engi has a horrible time in SW.

Since I’m one of the suckers that builds up Foothold, I usually make it a point on low population maps to focus on 1 fort(usually Red) and hold there until prep increases and population increases.

E: To clarify my love for SW is more because of its overall design. The map feels more dynamic and active when doing escorts, defense, offense, outside of Timeout the map just seems more alive. The aspect of your actions helping build up and effecting the overall map to a end goal is what I enjoy the most.

GW2 ruined WoW for me. I used to play a fair bit of WoW, but after GW2,
-The healer/tank/3dps setup felt annoying and corresponding dungeon queues were just too long
-The lack of self-healing and dodge rolls made me constantly leap into suicidal situations where I thought I could survive with intelligent play, when in fact I just didn’t have the health for it
-The moving or casting (instead of moving and casting) made the entire system feel slow
-Having many un-fancy abilities (How many direct damage nukes can one character have?) felt exceedingly clunky after having a few interesting ones
-Flight paths instead of waypoints

I’m sure if I sat down and thought about it for longer I could come up with more. I won’t begrudge WoW players, since everyone has their own preferences, but GW2 just fits me so much better.

As a man of few words, I’ll say this.

GW2 is subject to human error, oversight and bad calls on the part of the dev team and art team, and story team as well.

That being said, it’s still leagues above the other things passing for MMO right now. I’d rather idle here than be actively engaged in some of the newer games.

If you want something you can actually enjoy playing instead of feeling like your game is a second job, look no further.

GW2 is definitely much better than any other MMO to this point. It’s a collection of much desired gameplays and systems. Obviously they lack a lot, but the core game elements are better designed than anything I’ve found.

I Really love GW2 combat mechanics, art, and all, the only thing missing in the game, is more love to pvp… 3 wvw maps, spvp is not enough compared to pve Tyria, I wish Anet could add more than 1 wvw map and the Stronghold mode.
