I cannot see my thief for the spell animations!

Is their anyone else that actually wishes they could turn spell animations down?

I run my system maxed out across the board and like to have nice looking environments, characters and crisp textures but find myself often getting annoyed in medium to large group content that by its nature tends to get zerged; resulting in 50 different spell animations that make it all but impossible for me to see where to position myself (thief) in order to get behind a boss or target. Other than the icon above the boss’ head I literally cannot see my thief half the time.

I thought I remembered seeing something in recent patch notes that said arenanet put in some smart lod adjustment for overlapping spells when there is a lot of combat going on so obviously they have acknowledged that this is an issue in larger group content when you aren’t just seeing one or two nice spell animations going off.

Turning graphics down makes very little difference to all the nice flashy spell animations and just results in crumby low detail models and textures.

Arenanet if your listening, I would really love a way to tone down a lot of the flashier spells animations so that I can see what is going on. I guess most of the problems arise from the magical caster oriented characters (Ele/Mesmers?). Or better yet, drastically increase the dynamic spell lod system

Just came back after a long break and am really enjoying the Queen’s Jubilee content though

They supposedly introduced a system to reduce spell effect clutter in zergs, but I haven’t noticed a kitten difference.

I was actually hoping the effect LOD would fix this problem. Even with it enabled, things still look the same. Most of the time I’m staring at a flashing white mob with a feint silhouette. It makes it impossible to see what the mob is doing because of this.

I’m glad I’m not the only one that finds this frustrating and actually detracts from the overall experience. Seeing as arenanet did put something in the patch notes about this I would love to hear some feedback from them if they are happy with where it is at or are still working on it.

In Warhammer Online you had Options like this for spell effects.

1. Yourself Only
2. Your Group Only
3. All

It of course played all enemy spell animations, although I believe there was a way to change the radius at which they were displayed. When you had 400 ppl in a single area it was nice to know what was going on lol.

Animations: Low
Effect LOD: On
General Graphics: near minimum settings

And this is what most things look like with many people around (I’m actually in melee range of that boss):
