I would like to start by saying in general I have no problem with event farming however I was in cursed shore yesterday and was attempting to complete each meta just to experience the game. I waited until their farm zerg left warmaster josif and then soloed the event before moving on. I had been waiting several hours to do this event.

The amount of toxicity and hate I received for completing this event instead of failing it was extreme for this game. I was told to kill myself. Hope that I never have a good drop ever again. Hope my account is taken or I am banned ect

I think this is an issue with event design that needs to be fixed as Noone should recieve this much verbal abuse for succeeding an event chain.

My suggestion is to reduce the heavy moldy bag drops that the adds give on the dolyak escort event, prevent champs from spawning on this event and to greatly increase the timer that resets the escort event if failed.

So because you were offended, the event should be nerfed so that all the people who do it their own way and enjoy it, (like you did) get very little reward for doing so? That seems a little selfish. just block the people and choose not to be offended.

They need to fix looting in general. Getting full credit for a single hit should have never been a thing. Imagine what it’d be like if you actually had to contribute the equivalent of killing 1 enemy to receive loot. Suddenly there’s no difference between soloing and zerging, whereas currently zerging easily gives you 10x the rewards. Alternatively, enemies should be classed in groups at events with loot only eligible once per grouping. As it is now, an upscaled event spawning 10x the enemies and thus 10x the loot simply promotes poorly played zerging. Furthermore, upscaling enemies to champions should still only drop the loot of normal enemies. Without the ability to exploit the combination of personal loot and scaling, these farmers would likely be gone.

Just for those who don’t get what’s going on. The zerg in Cursed Shore runs from boss to boss, from event to event, in rotation, to get most loot out of them. To achieve that, they deliberately fail events because it makes Champions spawn, which provide good loot.

There are usually a few players who are not part of the zerg who try to succeed in the event. The zerg will than move close to, let’s say, the outer side of a wall. The idea is to be close enough to scale up the boss, but don’t get aggro. This way, the boss will usually be too strong for the few who try to kill him.

I admit that I took part in these runs a few times. Reflecting on it from the point of view of those who actually want to do the event, it’s clearly a form of griefing. The only difference is that the zerg does not intend to grief, it’s more a collateral damage for them.

Now that I think about it, I couldn’t be mad at someone who reported me for griefing in this case. In another game I played, you could kill a banker for loot and xp. Sucked for those who wanted to use the banker because it took some time to finish him. Same goes for quest-NPCs. If you do something deliberately that gets the quest-PC killed, like pulling mobs to him, it’s griefing.

The only viable solution to this issue is changing the mechanics of the event chain. Make it so players are not tried to harmfully affect others. Break the event chain by increasing cool downs or adjusting loot or the Champ spawns.

Failure providing more incentive than success is a failure in game design and should be addressed by ArenaNet.

This.

If events were reworked they should be reworked to reward some for effort, but much more for success. If the reward pays more for failure you will end up with people trying to game the system for more reward which leads to these issues.

Report and block in game is also correct but posting also leads to a change that created the situation in the first place and makes sense. Its not about being selfish its about game environment which can impact player retention.

2 cents.

Failure providing more incentive than success is a failure in game design and should be addressed by ArenaNet.

Sure. And the way to address that is by posting the name of the event, an estimate of comparable rewards, and the request to change it. ANet can’t change things until it knows what the issues are. Even then, not all “poor design” situations need to be urgently addressed. There are tons and tons of events in Cursed Shore, so everyone has options, whether they are greedy + reward-driven, interested in trying all the events, or just want their dailies.

An event (and its rewards) aren’t “toxic”; it’s how a tiny fraction of players behave. Things could be better, but they aren’t dire.

Well, I sure hope that is not ArenaNet’s view on griefing. Just put yourself into the person who wants to do an event, and then a bunch a players come and scale up the boss so you cannot do the event. Or a small group makes it a hobby to join Triple Trouble events to kill the Amber head so fast that the event will fail every time.

Flat nerfing the rewards isn’t the answer, although a cap on what you can acquire before the event completes wouldn’t be bad. (honestly you should get less reward for a failed event)

I suggest:
1. Make completion more rewarding than fail farming.

2. Make event more frequent, because clearly people want to farm.

3. Reduce Scaling range. OR 4. add an enrage timer that will actually wipe players if the boss isn’t defeated.

5. Make it if event fails nothing will spawn for a long period of time.

need at least 1 and 2 really.

You shouldn’t have to wait till a group is done with an event before you can use it. (lol brings me back to when MVPs/Bosses were camped in other games)

Honestly just to be contrarian, you should get a bunch of skilled players who can finish the event even after they artificially scale it, and just kill it. It’s not griefing if you are completing events the way it was designed and intended. Then when they get mad just shoot them a meme, mail a packet of salt, lol, then blame them for the games inflation. (even if it’s not true)

Also don’t forget to report, so that when you do it again and have to report them again, there will be more ammo against them.

I wasnt interested in joining a farm zerg as they were failing the event and I wanted to complete it. I also didnt want to interrupt their farming if possible so thats why I waited until they had left the event before doing it. I wasnt trying to annoy them.

Id rather events didnt get nerfed but I think its bad design for an event to reward you more for failing it than completing it, toxcicity and me being ‘offended’ aside. So yes in this special instance I think it should be nerfed.

Id also like to mention there were some members of the zerg who were ok with me doing the event and were nice about it. I appreciate people like them.

The last 4-5 years have seen literally thousands of posts detailing the exact events that need retooling as well as suggestions for improvements which have netted us exactly 1 change (Champ Train in Queensdale, and that was a problem that didn’t exist at launch but was inserted later on). It would seem that anything “broken” related to core Tyria maps is pretty much guaranteed to remain a poorly implemented mess until the last server shuts down.

The problem is that it is simply easier for them to handle verbal abuse reports versus expending substantial time reviewing, redesigning, testing, and implementing changes to a core function of the game that will NOT generate any new revenue.

Agree, will never blame a player for playing the game as it was intended. Not in favor or completely against farmers if they are doing it reasonably and not blocking players or crossing TOS. But that doesn’t sound like this was the cause which is the problem.

GW2 is supposed to be designed around wanting people to show up instead of wincing in pain when they do. So it should be addressed. The Maw world boss was changed for a similar reason. There was supposed to be a win or fail scenario, but it was scrapped so that players didn’t fight over which to pursue.

So today I logged into Lake Doric map and saw a commander, so I thought, “hey I need some leather so ill join the farm”…. I was not impressed to say the least. There were at least 40 Engineers there with hundreds of turrets just sitting. This has got to end. By making a class mechanic usable, its gets abused. So after much thought, I’ve come up with the simplest way to end all afk farming; REMOVE THE AUTO CAST FEATURE. It doesn’t get used but for people to abuse the system. This one simple thing that no one uses can easily be turned off and no one but the AFK farmers will be affected. No one says “oh let me stand here and hit 1 and walk away from the boss.” It doesn’t always stay on even when used. Also, no one uses auto cast to set off their other skills either.
Let’s get Anet to make Tyria Great Again!

There’s an old adage, “don’t throw the baby out with the bath water” … oh, and a probably even older one regarding not cutting off the nose to spite the face.

You can’t address an issue like this simply by making things worse for players who are not abusing anything. Taking away the auto attack feature for what, turrets, minions, pets, summons, etc.? That’s a “solution” that adversely affects thousands of players who aren’t involved in this mess despite what you seem to claim.

Instead, perhaps ANet should remove this “leather farm” and actually resolve the issue by simply adjusting the global availability of and/or crafting requirements for hardened leather (which is the core of the issue). They created the problem by skyrocketing the need for HL, they can correct it by providing enough fresh sources or otherwise tweaking yield/need. Nothing more fancy than that.

It’s not just the leather farm. It’s the winterberries, the spots in orr, drytop, wherever it’s being done. Maybe you didn’t understand what I meant. Turn of the players auto cast feature altogether. No one uses it. To set up another skill to fire off every time its off cool down is not useful in the slightest. Because in all reality you still spam #1, so its not being used anyway. Pets and other things that auto cast are fine the way they are. It’s the player abusing the auto cast that is keeping the system from logging them out. no matter how you spin it.

besides, I don’t think removing auto attack would fix the issue in the slightest. they’d just find another way.

If they were going to stop AFK farming, they’d simply disable looting if there’s been any manual input, like how most MMOs would flag you AFK. There is no point however, because people would simply switch to using macros, or in the case of disabling auto cast, simply holding down #1.

I’m not taking “griefing” lightly — I’m saying it’s not a dire problem for the majority of the population. Most people don’t experience it, because many of the events have already been tweaked appropriately. The exceptions can be addressed by reporting people who are verbally abusive and letting ANet handle it.

That, of course, isn’t going to take the sting away from people at the sharp end of the abuse, such as the OP. But nothing addresses that, except for a thick skin (which many of us do not have) or time (and for some of us, it never really goes away).

There’s nothing that ANet can do about hurt feelings — they can address technical and design flaws or issues that make it more likely.

There are people who like adventure, action, complexity, teamwork… and sometimes there are people who simply like to farm and grind (alone or in a team).

An MMO game should address all types of players, for different moods a player could have, and player can feel happy in different paths of entertainment.

In my opinion grinding and farming is an important part of an MMO. This still reminds me of the good old days in WoW.

Alright, of course verbal harrassment is handled via reports. I didn’t even mention the hate chat because reporting is the way to go. But reporting won’t change the fact that there is an incentive to fail the event and doesn’t solve the problem. The number of people who are effected doesn’t really matter. If only a few people cannot do an event because someone or a group actively hinders him/her, that’s a problem. Ignoring it because it doesn’t affect a majority of players would give the message that ArenaNet doesn’t care about you. This is not really a thing where you can convincingly take the side of the zerg. Zaithan’s minions are trying to take the fortress, the heroes are supposed to fight them back. That is how the developers intended the event, there’s no room for interpretation.

The right thing to do for the zerg would be to just miss a cycle and let people do the event. That OP let the zerg go about their business and only started killing the boss when they were done is a courtesy that I would expect from the zerglings.

removal of the auto-attack would be a catastrophe, and that would be an understatement. Can you imagine, every fight, you’re repetitively pressing 1? to keep fighting?

Anet doesn’t need suggestions really. The complainers on Reddit have gotten what they wanted and Anet is looking into changing it.
It’s really sad that these people are so bad at the game that they have to ruin it for others in order to feel successful.

OP reports that he was told to kill himself, and we have at least two other users saying he should shut up and play another game or quit. Such a lovely community.

I’m going to make a wild guess by shooting in the dark and saying “those guys were part of the farming community”

^ This! Very well said.

There are a few loud people complaining about the engi farm and passing judgement on what other people are content to do with their game time.
Now it seems to have gained notice https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/6ec2az/chris_clearly_engi_leather_farmbots_working_on_it/

I dont know about anyone else but every time I hear something like this I feel like going there and complete the event just to spite people.

Maybe I’m just a bad person.

You know what, that’s a great idea! Im just gonna do that, and write the names of all does who verbally abuse me to make a proper report to support… Then sit back and enjoy how those players start to become silent or banish one by one… (joking, maybe…)

God I miss the banned animation of Dhuum striking players from GW1, some players did it on purpose, man that was some crazy funny times!

Anyway, seriously speaking here, when this happens just submit a ticket, if you can Print screen or record what’s happening it will help GM in the game a great deal when examining your submission. Verbal abuse IS a violation of the terms of use of the game. Hmmm, I have nothing against farming but, if it starts interfering with other players completing content intended to be played or completed even without the Verbal offence violation this will have to be look at eventually… as other continue to complain over this. Interesting…

Dhuum may not show like in GW1, when it takes action with its servants the GM’s but they do so actively more than players realise specially if it’s as obvious as this.

@OP: I’m sorry you had such a miserable experience.

They don’t handle them based on my experience so far, the reports just land directly in the bin.

All is Vain~
