Recently, I rolled a new character, since I have 34 characters I figured one more wouldn’t hurt. Just to see what a new player would be experiencing and trying to imagine the “fun” level of being devastated by these changes.

Getting traits is not to difficult in most areas of PvE, if you are of the appropriate level to enter the zone, are able to battle the boss solo because you can bet more than likely you will be alone and if you can’t well write that trait off until you get help. Then, there are those traits you have to go into PvP to obtain; first find out which world is controlling the zone you need to go to get the trait, change servers unless you really want to be ganked countless times never getting even close to the starting point. And when you finally get to the starting point the wonderful game designers have given you a two hour long jumping puzzle to while away your time all for the sake of a trait.

Are traits necessary, maybe, but are they something new players are going to find fun and enjoyable to get?, eh, I think not. I realize that the game system has gone through a multitude of changes, this change was pointless. Oh I understand, it’s an achievement to grab a trait, and thankfully most of my characters were 80 long before they changed the water …

It’s to late to go back now to the “original” system, it’s a “living” game. Nothing like it was and most likely not what we would have hoped for, it is what it is. A “Living Story” lost in translation, a game system to obtain traits that makes playing the game more than exasperating, no expectation of ever seeing what happened to Cantha or Elona after two hundred and fifty years of isolation.

I’ve been playing Guild Wars since February 2005 in Beta, online since April 2005. When I heard about the release of Guild Wars 2 in July 2008 I was filled with excitement. I knew that it would be the best game out there, and it was, but with all the changes it would be hard for me to recommend this game. Don’t get me wrong, I still love the game, hey, I’m the one with 35 characters, I will continue to play hoping to see Cantha and Elona (I can dream), and I will play a character without their traits because I just won’t bother to go through that again.

Yeah, I agree the locked traits is very annoying. Now with my new characters I just pick one build for them and stick them with it, instead of experimenting with builds. Some of the bosses you have to fight are either annoying to do or there’s rarely anyone else killing them.

Not fully understanding the working of traits in the game, I will agree with you, Jia.
In fact, I hardly think about them at all, just play through whatever I’m facing. I don’t
experiment with builds, just do what I know to do, and go on. I’ve never had any trouble overcoming the game baddies. Keeping my eye on the horizon for Cantha and
Elona eventually, (please God, and Anet too!) in the meantime, having fun and learning a lot ! Peace everyone!

Yeah I absolutely despise this new trait system. As a result I’m just not paying any attention to my build any more. Simply because I have no idea how certain traits have to be unlocked now. (and yes, I understand that the wiki probably has these answers for me, but I find it very strange that any of this isn’t mentioned in-game)

Actually, besides every trait is a telescope image that will tell you what is needed to unlock said trait, and if you click it it will show you the lcoation on the map.

So it is mentioned in game how to do so.

There’s a lot of reasons to distance yourself from this game, but the NPE isn’t one of them.

Well a close friend of mine recently started playing the game, but when I asked him what he thought of it and what level he was he said that he was lv6 but already quit playing again because he had no idea what he had to do and thought it was boring.

So because of this I decided to visit him at his place so that I could accompany him while he was playing and explain to him how everything worked and introduce him to the various features the game had.

However, as I hadn’t created a new character myself since the introduction of the NPE, I now noticed how terribly faulty this system actually is…

Because when I proceeded to inform him of the various activities that you could do in every map (map completion → world completion, vistas, gathering, dailies, monthlies etc. etc.) I noticed that none of these things were even visible for him yet.

At first I thought he had maybe changed his game settings or something, but as this wasn’t the case I had a look on the internet and found out that all of these features will progressively unlock based on your character level… what the actual f??

So as a result I had to log into my account to show him all the things that I was able to do at a higher level to convince him that the game wasn’t as boring as it looked to him and that there were, in fact, plenty of things to do.

I still cannot get my head round what Anet was thinking to implement this NPE. What reason could they possible have had for this?

I remember when I started playing GW2 roughly 2 years ago I had this overwhelming sense of epicness. A feeling that there were endless things to do and discover (which later on, after multiple max lvl characters, proved not to be the case). But now that I have witnessed the NPE through the eyes of an actual beginning player I realized that that feeling is now completely gone, even at the beginning of the game.

Honestly, I don’t see the problem with the new Trait system, and I’ve done it both ways, grandfathered and NPE characters. Having followed A.net since before it was called A.net and playing both games, this is as close to GW1 as you can get. Granted, some of the events chosen for some of the Traits are questionable, but they’re all doable to some degree, and if there’s one you aren’t interested in, then just skip it and buy the Trait if you really want it that bad. I think people want it easy and that’s what they are really kittening about.

This is only similar to GW1 if in GW1 you had to hunt down every skill by doing tasks far beyond your level or entire map completions or to play through buggy open world events that may or may be working for weeks on end or get up-leveled into PvP-land and get ganked repeatedly trying to get a skill. Guess what in GW1 you didn’t have to do any of those things. Somehow ANet went from “hunting elite skills” – you know the last skill on your skill bar – to hunting down every trait (a completely different basic build component). If they wanted to do something similar to GW1 they would have limited it to Grandmaster traits. That at least would have some consistency with the way GW1 worked. Oh and by the way you are correct you can also just spend ~43 gold and I believe around 360 points and just buy every trait to experiment with builds. As opposed to the previous system where you could unlock all the traits with about 3 gold. The new system is clearly such a deal! What could their customers possibly be upset about! I have 6 grandfathered level 80s and one grandfathered level 40 that don’t have to buy or hunt every trait and I disliked the 8th class (Engineer) when I played it previously so I will not be building another alt until ANet introduces either a new class or race. In other words probably never . . .

^This. This, this, this.

And oh yeah, ^THIIIIIIIIIIS!

Although I’ve made quite a few alts after the update, this new trait system is probably one the most stifling things I’ve ever experienced in a game. Talk about discouraging build-experimenting… not to mention a downright pain in the butt.

If they wanted a GW1-style experience with traits, then they should’ve simply made grandmaster traits something you have to acquire/purchase, not every single trait. Seriously, I think there’s lvl 30 traits that ask me to go to Sparkfly Fen. WTF?!! Who thought that was a good idea? Especially from a NPE perspective, you’re asking new players to go venturing to areas far beyond their level. I can’t imagine that turns out well for them.

Check out the official Traits thread. It’s got well over 3000 posts, and I’ll bet 99% of them are negative.

I would be interested in the opinions of people who are fine with the trait redo after they have done it on at least 3 alts.

Also I would be interested in how many traits they unlocked per toon. Did they unlock all of them or some of them? If they did not unlock all of them, why didn’t they, especially since they think that the new trait system is good?

The NPE is a separate issue from the trait redo. The trait redo was from last April and the NPE changes did not affect the issues with the trait changes.

Because I can and making the golds not that hard.

It’s about 30 silver for the lower tier traits … let’s assume I to X cost those 30 silver … that’s 3 gold multiplied by 5 trait categories … making that 15 gold.

As a new player gold is VERY hard to come by because most quests give you like 80 copper … what gives good money is map completition of the level 80 zones but can you imagine doing those without your traits?

I just posted my own rant about the recent changes and the new trait locking and the +5 block mechanism is very, very, very bad and – in my opinion – extremely unfriendly to new players who are cursed to be useless until they unlock the traits.

What’s good is that you can now reset your trait assignment – that allows new players to test out different builds .. oh .. it would, if they had those traits unlocked, which they don’t … so they included a good change only to completely negate it by another, well done, guys!

Um – no. And only epic fail Prophecies (the campaing I really, really hate) has you waltz all the way all over Tyria up to Amber Camp where you FINALLY get all skills from the campaign.

Factions for example has Mychico who has EVERY skill you can get in Factions … except, of course, for the Elite skills. But GW2 does not require you to unlock XI, XI and XIII but I – XIII and that’s extremely unlike GW1 and a silly idea to boot.

The bigger problem when making a new toon isn’t so much the gold for the traits, it;s the skill points. You simply don’t have enough to buy traits while unlocking skills.

Most of the new people I chat to in game check out one build, then just unlock that set of skills and traits.

The other problem is traits and skills have a much greater effect on squishy types than warriors, especially with bad gears. Try rolling a new caster class or engi and see how restricted you feel if you use your skill points to open up skills in the order they appear (those 20/25 sp heals…).

The NPE should be renamed the PRS (player removal system) as I’ve yet to find anyone I know that likes it.

I agree but will even go one step further and call this “new” system a game killer. I have eight characters that were made before this totally messed up trait system was implemented and a new one that will not be advancing due to the grind of the trait unlocking. The original system was much better.

It is becoming obvious to me that this is not the game I was hoping it would be. Something with longevity like GW1 was, no, this game is no way near what GW1 was. Go ahead and hate on what I just said but GW2 is pretty boring now. The new content is either shallow or way too much of a grind to get the pretty new armors.

LOL NPE should be the PRS system

I have 5 characters, all 80 or on their way there. Wanna guess how many of them have all traits, and not just the “easy ones” you get from completing a zone?

For me, traits are like precursors. but hey, at least I can play as I want and be equal to other players in every aspect of the game, amirite? a.net really messed things up here, and it’s not likely they’d ever fix it.

The new trait system (from April, not the September NPE) gives veterans of the game a distinct advantage over new players, because veterans largely have most of the professions grandfathered in with the majority of traits (all but 5) unlocked. This is a clear imbalance, and people who wonder if traits are even necessary… man. They’re meant to be part of build customization. That should be appalling to anyone from ANET who might read this.

Also, anyone who thinks that doing map complete of Lornar’s Pass for one kitten adept trait is okay, I think is seriously impaired.

I’ll post here what I posted in the official thread:

But let me just point this out:
If I’d started playing in April of this year and I had all of the characters I do today with their current spread of traits unlocked, it would have cost me 473g and 3960 skillpoints. Or, even suggesting that I purchased only half of the unlocks, and I did the rest of them organically, that’s 236g50s and 1980 skillpoints. It boggles the mind.

Anyone here have 2000 skill points?

Two scenarios that will bring this trait system under serious heavy fire:

  1. Anet introduces a new class or race.
  2. Anet does another re-balance of classes that forces a majority to change builds.

Until then it’s just a thorn in the side that is easily ignored or at the most put on the ‘back burner’ to fix when time permits.

I will maintain my position that the first character to go through the new system may be a somewhat pleasant experience for some. However I too wonder, as Gregori has asked:
Were all traits unlocked to maximize experimentation? How many were bought from frustration(difficulty, bugged content)?
What about that second and third alternate character? Etc.

It IS a game killer. How do people not get bored leveling from 30 to 80 without traits? What is there to unlock/what is even the point anymore? Without traits you’ve basically gotten all the skills you need by like level 30 to 40.

It won’t be changed, A-net very rarely makes changes. They’ll get around to fixing their mess in about a year and a half when the next patch that adds a remote amount of new content to the game comes out. Personally I’m only playing my guardian, who was grand fathered into this. I cannot stand to play anyone else. It just wrecks any amount of build experimentation. It forces new players to look up a meta build, seek out only those traits and how to unlock them and never change away from it.

Disclaimer: Under no circumstance should you take this seriously.

Not quite – in the old system you had three books to purchase. So you weren’t really done by the time you were 30 or 40 …

What is the game without traits? Just weapon attacks without synergy. Many traits from tier one traits are from level 40+ content … which means unless you’re willing to cough up the cash ANet expects you to go 1-5, switch weapon, 1-5, switch weapon until then – oh what fun for a Necro to not be able to throw wells …

It’s hard enough to have any kind of impact in WvW with an uplevelled char. It’s impossible if your relevant traits are still locked and you lack the funds to unlock them … NPE … indeeed … stands for Negative Player Experience, right?

If it ain’t broke don’t “fix” it …

I have one character with over 800 skill points sadly I have no reason to use them for getting my traits. The character is a grandfathered level 80 that doesn’t craft … I created a necromancer as my scout, much like I did in GW, my personal experience is minions are useful as meatshields that can deal a little damage on the side. That being said, I created four engineers to experiment with AoE and Dps and since the grandfathering they still are very fun to play, but my newest engineer is an attempt at a bunker medic (kind of a throwback to the monk concept of GW). I thought how useful this build could be in almost any situation, PvE, PvP, and WvW. I never considered to time and cost of this build since the trait mechanics change.

I seriously doubt that whoever thought this change was suitable actually spent more time thinking about new players effected than the time it took to write the code. Maybe it never crossed their collective minds, and while I appreciate being able to swap my traits on the fly with my grandfathered characters, grinding out a new ambitious build now seems to be an over reach on my part. I know that we avid players have suffered through these so called improvements, adapting as best we can. We all know we will never ever see the Monk class again as Anet/NCsoft was quite adamant at stating from the release, but I will take the lemons I’ve got and endeavor to complete something resembling the functionality and usefulness of a monk out of the scraps I have.

Sorry I think you misunderstood. I mean the game in the state as it is now, there’s no sense of progression after level 30 or 40 because you aren’t unlocking anything anymore. Traits aren’t unlocked at a reasonable enough rate to encourage leveling. The entire system feels so slow and cumbersome.

Ah – I misunderstood.

Yes, you’re actually dis-couraged to unlock the traits because you’re sent all over the place and into regions you may not have any interest in visiting (like, say, doing the JP in Eternal. WvW).

So I think what many people will do is look up meta builds, continue without unlocking and – once they have the money – unlock the traits needed for their meta.

It is just a general term where something which existed before a certain time has rights that were commonplace before, but were removed. Like how the 10 round handgun magazine law doesn’t make pre-restriction magazines illegal… they are still legal on ‘grandfathered’ rights.

In this case it mean, characters made before AMFP.

Just to clarify what Guzzi said, it’s a general expression, which is why there’s nothing in the wiki. In this instance, any character created before April 15, 2014 has all their traits unlocked, except for the 5 new grandmaster traits that were introduced in the patch. Those characters are considered “grandfathered” in. They existed under a previous system, so they do not have to be burdened with the new one.

Any character created after the April 15th feature patch (so, anytime in the last 8 months) will now have to go through a convoluted list of tasks to unlock each individual trait, or pay 43g and 360 skillpoints.

I agree, but this does come second though.
Because I don’t even have a clue about what’s required to unlock certain traits in the first place. As this is not mentioned anywhere in-game.
if I would look this up on the wiki and then realise that I have to travel across the entire map for a specific trait then yes, i would indeed be very discouraged.

Been levelling an elementalist lately (first new character after the NPE) and this trait unlocking system just feels completely random to me now.
Every now and then I do something which apparently unlocks a trait, but most of the time it isn’t one that I’m interested in or was in need of so I just don’t even bother opening up the trait panel anymore.
it’s gotten to the point where it’s just an annoyance to get this pop-up window in your screen now.

Locked traits should have a spyglass icon (see http://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/thumb/4/42/Trait_interface.jpg/800px-Trait_interface.jpg ). Clicking on the spyglass should zoom the map to the place where the unlock happens.

My 5th level 80 bought the Balthazar GM trait because I was losing time, money and patience for several days trying to get it done.

My 6th level 80 bought the required traits for one single build and forgot about everything else. So much for build diversity and adapting builds according to situations.

My 7th and 8th characters are on their way to level 80. Luckily, one of those was grandfathered from the old system (I think…), and the other one… oh well, it’s not like I’m going to play it a lot anyway.

Now I also got a lvl20 scroll from an AP chest and am wondering whether I should make a 9th character of a duplicate class… probably not.

20 level 80s and counting.

A few weeks ago, I tried to level up and necromancer. Specifically, I wanted to try a minionmancer. Back in the day, I remembered if you saved two skill points you could get your first minions, around level five or seven.

Imagine my surprise when I saw I didn’t have access to that until around level twenty.

Yeah, I immediately deleted that character. Wasn’t worth the time running the hamster wheel with a cement block attached.

No thank you.

Gone to Reddit.

I agree, but this does come second though.

Well, the locked traits do have a spyglass at the right of their description that’ll tell you what you have to do – it’ll even move the map to the location where that task/event/boss is – although it’s quite confusing. When you get the task for the WvW jumping puzzle and click the spyglass icon it tells you you have to be “on the right continent” …

As a veteran of GW2 I know the locations and bosses – how “helpful” the spyglass might be for new players … can’t say … but “you must be on the right continent” instead of a direct tip that you have to enter WvW seems quite … er … strange.
