UHD 4K UI
One of these I’m going to update to one. Which gfx card do you use? Any lag issues?
I too bought 4k UHD tv recently that i play gw2 on, but i can’t run it at 4k at all. the UI is so tiny i can’t even read anything, despite my tv being 60" lol. what i also have issue with is that i can’t scroll within the windows of my UI elements, such as crafting or chat window. The only thing it works in, is in my inventory but for everything else, i have to put the cursor way outside the windows, which is really weird and so time consuming i don’t even bother. But manually using the side scroll bar on them windows, is really tedious and cumbersome as well, but at least somewhat accurate. The only way i can get the scrolling back, is to go back to my old res. of 1920×1080 but that makes the whole UI huge!
I found if i run 2560×1440 and use larger UI setting option, i can read the text reasonably well, but not being able to scroll my menus normally as i used to and not being able to run at 4k res has kind of defeated the purpose of getting a 4k UHD monitor since i can’t actually run it at 4k. So yea, feel a bit disappointed to say the least.
I recently upgraded to full 4K on my system. Everything looks amazing. The only thing I’m finding, for obvious reasons, is that the UI is very tiny. I have it set on the largest setting (Larger).
Is there any chance this can have an even bigger (Largerer/Largerest) setting in the future?
And, as an added wish list, it would be really really really nice to be able to customize the windows individually instead of the entire UI.
I know this may sound a little nit picky, but this is how we are able to directly interact each day. Being able to adjust my ‘window to the world’ a little bit more would be … incredulously pleasing. Thanks -

Downgrade to a lower resolution. “Problem” fixed. This is what happens when you try to play a game in conditions far beyond what it’s development had access to, ie 4k was limited to, as far as I recall, cinematic format in theaters until recently.

Still not an excuse. WoW had larger UI options, Blade and Soul does. It is possible to have a larger setting for the UI. This is not rocket science. Why conform and fall in line so easily? Where does your logic stem from? You make it sound so simple to downgrade yet LCD technology is wonky if its not at its native resolution. 4k displays will only get more popular, and the solution is possible.
Not to mention the people with low vision who could use larger ui options. This is QoL to the max but its even beyond that. It’s basic functionality that’s on the line. The thing is it has a solution, that is not that hard to implement.

Agreed, Compared to the changes in the camera and such, a larger sized UI seems pretty trivial.
It’s a bit ridiculous.
They just didn’t anticipate the move to 4k.
I’m on Mac, so even if I have a 4k screen the mac Client barely runs at a playable fps even in 1080p.

I have the new NVIDIA GTX 1080. No lagging. Really nice looking. It’s all part of a new system though. All SSD drives and 128gb of 10cores. Can link two cards together one day if I really feel like it but I have no problems with everything turned up all the way.

Well, there is a a really big difference in how things look in 4K. I wouldn’t want to go back now that I’ve switched a couple of times. The field of view is pretty immense too. I was thinking the same thing on the UI changes as well. (Hoping it wasn’t a rocket science project) I just figured that someone had to step up and make the request early so maybe it could be done eventually. Even if a few of the menus could just have larger text boxes. That would really make mundane things like clearing your inventory much less tedious.

Game user interfaces are generally created with Adobe Flash – yeah I know… and Flash interfaces are usually done with svg (scalable vector graphics) and so many interfaces will scale great with your resolution changes.
This is not the case with ArenaNet. They chose a highly stylized bitmap interface so it doesn’t actually scale properly at all, not to mention that the default setting was designed to work on an 800×600 screen resolution. Making it scalable to 4k or higher would be a tremendous amount of work and I doubt they’ll even try. The interface they have right now scales poorly and stretches fonts improperly and simply refuses to work well on multi-monitor setups. But there could be hope for it later, Guild Wars 1 eventually got an interface upgrade.
I wish there was a monitor with 4k resolution that hit 100hz+ xD
I make PvP & WvW videos
You can run magnify as a background on the Acer over the gamne.. not a solution but it helps when your stopped and just inventory working etc
Cant see it being fixd soon.. As mentioned GW2 usues a highly customised UI at set resolutions rather than some scaleform suits all

I love that this keeps coming up. It’s probably the 5th thread on the topic in the past year.
I also keep waiting for a fix to this problem so I can enjoy my 4k GW2 experience. Sadly all of the complaints have been ignored so far…
I game on a 4K TV from my couch. I recently came back to GW2 after a long time away, thinking about buying the HOT expansion. I logged in on a fresh install, and was getting a silky smooth 80+ FPS in 4K, but couldn’t read the UI even on the largest setting. Scaling down to 1080P looked hideous. Then I realized, instead of getting to enjoy some of the content that had been added since I was away, I had to actually BUY season 2 in addition to HOT. …I’m now uninstalling the game, and I am convincing my play group to take a closer look at a few other MMOs. Anet might think it doesn’t matter, but this is one more anecdote on the impact of a a tiny UI at 4K (along with some of their less than intelligent marketing practices, I guess). 3 HOT sales lost/pending now in the ether.
you would need a dx 12 update for that. don’t forget that gw2 use dx 9. so even if you can send the graphic rendering on a uhd tv or monitor you will not get the best experience from it. you can still have fun making some tweak with the setting.
I wish there was a monitor with 4k resolution that hit 100hz+ xD
just plug your hdmi cable to your uhd tv. and you can have 120hz or 240 hz depending on the tv.
Uhm guys?
This game is running on 10 years old engine paired with DX9c.
I’m not sure how great this game scale on 4K in general.
UI can be fixed failry easy, devs just need to take 1 hours time to push update for it.
But GW2 at 4K … I can already see lagg xD
Corsair RM650x, Fractal Define S (with window panel)
I am playing on a 4k (3840×2160) monitor in windowed mode — window size is about 3200×2000 with a pair of gtx980ti in SLI with every graphics setting set to maximum. Depending on what I’m doing, I have seen fps of up to 150. I’ve since used RivaTuner to cap it at 60 and see most of the time it’s running about that – except for huge zerg fights. Other than that scenario, I very seldom see lag.
The game looks fantastic. I can really appreciate how much effort went into the artwork. But I agree with the UI size comments. A “huge” setting that is 20% larger than “large” for all the UI elements would be a tremendous help. It’s very hard to read the text in chat/dailies/story/etc and see the quantities of stacks for boons/conditions. And features on the minimap sometimes are impossible to notice.
Playing full screen at a lower resolution would remedy the issue, but I only have a single monitor so the need to have other windows open (which I always do when gaming) makes this a non-option for me.
It would be hugely helpful if there were an additional UI scale option for these larger resolution monitors.

Yes please add a larger UI scale. I’m returning player currently doing the world completion and even after years since GW2 has been out, there are some scenes in the game that are just stunning…especially in 4k.
I’m playing on a 48" 4K TV and even at larger, the UI scale is too small, the text in particular.
Even a hacky 200% from standard UI scale with pixelated graphics would be better than what we have now.
The major issue I’ve found in GW2 is the UI is directly linked to the resolution. In other games it is stand alone and can be modified separately.
I will say that though I have a 4k TV I run at 1440p because of the UI issue. That and my R9 270x can only do 24Hz @ 4k. Still watching those RX 480s…and still not convinced they actually exist. I may stick with 1440 since it is a 43", but it has HDMI 2.0b so 1440 supported @ 240Hz easy and this thing has 120Hz native.

oh wait.. throw my 4k and 2 SLI 980 Ti nvideas just cause GW2 cant do enlarge?
That’s just dumb and basically belong to state of mind of"As long as i dont have that problem the rest can go to ^&*(".
The tec is out for years,it is available for many and as such should be addressed.
Other then that GW2 DOES support 4k resolutions. Its there in options..go take a look in available resolutions..
Only thing they haven’t done is add UI scaling for it.
Oh and to all of you that doubt 4k..
Im playing gw2 in 4k ultra settings, over a year now without any lag.
As for me all im having problems is with the text in the window..very small hard to read..
If only I could scale text would be enough for me,but cant do that even.
I look at WoW as the crap-filter of the MMO world.
It attracts all the idiots and lets the rest of us play in relative peace.

fully agree with you on this . and the fact . that if you got 4K going lower is something
no one should need to do to enjoy the game the way they like . and honestly do not
think they will every update or fix this problem ever. but if they was to do it . be most
welcomed
I’ll explain why this is unlikely , in a way that everyone can understand.
The reason 4k user interfaces are possible in modern operating systems, particular in the desktop and in web applications, is because these systems use Scalabe Vector Graphics (SVG), TrueType Fonts (TTF) or similar technologies when rendering everything, so it all just scales to whatever resolution or DPI you are using.
This is not the case with video games, because video games have to use textures. You can’t just upload an SVG file to the graphics card and have it render it. OpenGL and DirectX support scalable user interfaces but NOT what you texture them with, so unless the textures are really high resolution, it becomes super blurry.
Let’s just assume that, between all the professions, all the skills, all the traits, all the armor and weapons, and everything else in the game, there’s about maybe 10,000 icons. Not only would ArenaNet have to redraw all of those in a high resolution, but you would need a minimum of 256×256 textures for the icons and they would take up an additional ~1.9GB of space (much less with JPG/DXT, but artifacts), compared to the ~118MB of space taken up by the textures for 64×64 icons.
To put this into perspective, “4k” is ~16x the game’s intended resolution (1024×768).
Then imagine what impact this also has on your VRAM, even with texture compression, and how much game world texturing you’re sacrificing just to display a bunch of colored buttons on the screen.
Its simple, this isn’t some FPS where you only have a dozen icons in the whole game. MMOs have thousands upon thousands upon thousands of icons and that number only increases exponentially for the longer the game is expanded and updated.
The best you could hope for is high-resolution dialogs and text rendering. They can scale the user interface up for usability, but it’s gonna look bad.
Run the game in 1920×1080 resolution and turn on supersampling.
I’m usually really sweet… but this an internet forum and you know how it has to be.

^ Bullcrap. You only need scaled (bigger) versions of the UI. Textures are less important due at high res most of the detail comes from the wireframe itself. As long as you have a nice pixel density and some AA the image quality improvement is nothing short of amazing.
I do play the games at 2560 × 1440 and my may concern to my next display is to chose between 16:9 4K or ultra widescreen (21:9) display. More tempted for the later.

He’s not talking about the textures on the 3D models, he’s talking about the 2D elements. Every skill and trait icon, every TP item icon would need a higher resolution version. Currently there’s 4 versions for each, a fifth would be needed for a scaled up 4K UI. A simple bitmap scale would be quick but will assuredly change the complaint from “too small” to “too ugly”.

or hard drive space . and Scalabe is spelled Scalable btw
^ Bullcrap. You only need scaled (bigger) versions of the UI.
Exactly.
All the other games I played in 4k like RIFT or TSW they don’t have a special set of graphics or icons to suit 4k.
No one asked to create a texture 4k specific, changing the resolution to 4k looks great as is.
Problem is the size of the fonts, and other elements like ui,the Setting menu, choosing dyes etc.
Dont create 4k game for us,just provide like a magnifying glass effect so we can enlarge those specific elements that’s all.
They only let you scale the UI. the result can be a bit blurry and not fine looking, but its a solution without changing anything and solving the problem of extremely small fonts etc in 4k.
I look at WoW as the crap-filter of the MMO world.

You say that now but guaranteed if they add a 2x scale checkbox to the UI scale options there will be vocal 4K players dissatisfied by such a shortcut.

i will say in the case of fonts now that is something also that be welcomed if it was set .so you could make the letters any size you liked or need . like in the case of people who do not have good eyesight yet still love to game . i think it would be really great for it
I play on a 4k TV but the UI is too small… I would love to be able to scale the UI much larger for flexability.
Currently I’m forced to play at 2k… cause the UI is more bareable but please I rather play at 4k 60FPS max settings which my PC is capable of, but the UI is too small for the largest it can go. The game just looks so much better than… 1920×1080.. =(

You seriously think that the UI icons were painted at ridiculos 25 × 25 pixels or so? Most of them are based on large draws that are later downscaled to a chosen res. They can add new versions at 0 cost; anyone with the originals can do the work with Photoshop in a couple of hours.
Just bought a 4K tft and generally loving it, but GW2 is a real setback. Same problem as every one else, the interface scaling is too limited.
I’d seriously appreciate a 200% zoom, even if that meant to simply upscale low-res bitmaps. Who cares about minor aesthetic issues if the game become playable again that way.

btw… playing an MMO with small text on a TV… bad idea for your eyes.
Anyway, yes, 4k UI please ! At least bigger mouse for now would be very nice, I often lose it xD
There are threads going back more than 2 years about 4k upscaling being kitten in this game and they didn’t change. Like with so many things in this game. No wonder people are going and find other games.

I’ve read about another QoL problem that was handled by a single developer as a side project (can’t find it right now). If that is typical it would explain quite a lot.
I feel no wish to “to vacate these premises”. Let’s hope AN will apprehend the need for some engine modernization and does not force our hands.

You mean, moving some more stuff into materials storage, which was originally not handled that way? It’s a side project for a single developer because they would like it to improve their gameplay, and because they think it’s worth spending their own personal time on.
Let me ask you this: if you want that to be the focus, what would you like to give up in return for that? Would you like to delay the next Living Story episode, or the next expansion for it? How much are you willing to slow that down in return for getting this done?
How about balance changes — think we should delay those for an extra month or two in return for 4K support? Maybe the next legendary should be put off instead?
None of this is free, and anet are (sensibly) focused on spending their time and effort where it has the greatest return on investment in terms of making life better for us, the players. That is, I think, the right decision.
UI should have a “Even Larger” option or check box quadrupling UI pixel count, if not being converted to a sliding scale. I play on a QFHD screen at FHD resolution.
I have a 1440P on a 1080tiand i prefer that no one can tell the difference and its an older optomized game so it actually makes gw look fuzzy as hell. People over paying for stuff anymore. No different than something that came out 3 years ago
The terrible UI scaling options are a disgrace for a game released in 2012. Full HD (Ultra HD is only a few years younger) was already available for 10+ years back then.
4k is getting old already, 5k and 8k monitors are starting to get released already.

That depends on many factors like your eye sight, how far you are sitting away from the screen and the pixel density of the screen.
Someone also suggested using super sampling / downsampling, but it is not the same as a native resolution.

As a 4K user (in windowed mode so that I can get to my browser easily), I do hope they spend some time improving it.
While probably hard to measure, I do wonder if it indirectly hurts sales – someone decides to give the free version of GW2 a try, and after dealing with the poor interface on 4K, decide to give up/not spend any money for the full version, and instead spend their time & money on a game that does support 4K well.

I’m certain it does. I’m equally certain that anet have looked at the demand for 4K support, the lost sales from not supporting 4K, the effort required to add it, and concluded that it is not, at the moment, worth more than it would cost.
I mean, do you really think that anet — who pay people full time to work out how to make enough money from the game — have failed to think of this?
Now, if you think the costs are likely to be have been underestimated, or you have some insight that might help explain why that cost will increase in the near future, this’d be a great time to lay out it…
It depends on when they looked at it, and if they continue to do so.
A few years back, the number of 4K users was likely pretty small. But as time passes, that number (as a percentage) is likely to only increase.
It is hard to imagine that allowing an even bigger interface should cost too much to do. Or allowing more flexible resize for different elements.
Mini map is my main gripe. If I scale down to 1080P (which looks terrible btw), the mini map ends fairly close to my skill bar – perhaps a quarter width of the screen. At 4K, there is a large amount of empty space, and the mini map is perhaps 1/8th the screen.
This is the same number of pixels (which must be what is limiting its size), but it means at 4K resolution, I need to be zoomed fully in to see anything. At 1080P, I can be zoomed out one step and still see things.
I actually don’t much much problem with text size, but then I’m on a big (40") monitor.
with a 1080ti my gpu is more than capable of keeping up with the limitations of my cpu as far as performance goes on 4k and the programming for a scalable hud is already done as we can move between small/normal/large/larger where larger is perfect for 1440p, all they need is a 4k option. I dont know their systems personally but I do work with code and if you’ve already built a function that takes a variable such as 1 for normal or 1.78 for 1440p etc then adding 4 as variable to pass to the function that already exists looks like literally 60 seconds of work to implement. Do want please implement
It’s worth knowing that an anet developer looked into this after being asked recently, and came back to confirm that, no, it’s not a simple matter of 60 seconds, or trivial to do.
We don’t know why, but we do know that there would be a significant engineering effort required to implement the larger interface.
Last year I got my Asus GTX 1080 OC and the 34 inch Acer Predator with a 100 refresh rate screen to play GW2 in all its glory at 3440 by 1440 and I could not see anything on the minimap, the skills bar and map chat. I was almost depressed that after a $2000.00 upgrade I could not play the game I loved with my new monitor and had to down scale to 1920 by 1080. I get the same performance at both resolutions. After over 4000 hours I actually stopped playing for about 8 months after this and just came back 4 months ago. This game is beautiful but only at 1920 by 1080. I hope Anet will prioritize this. This game deserves to be enjoyed with the current technology. I know some will repond about how this game is using older tech, but seriously if they want to make money they should adjust as did WOW and others that have older tech engines. Please implement. Please?
I must be the only one who thinks that the UI even in small is a bit large lol, and besides the Norn, when I play with other races they just feel too small, too tiny.
I think we also need a way to move the skill tab, so I can put it somewhere else besides the middle of the screen.
My monitor max resolution is 1366×768 btw.

I’m a little surprised you needed to go so far down. I find the “normal” size interface perfectly readable at 2560×1440, and have not tried the “large” size, but I’d imagine it was usable at a higher resolution than that, even. Maybe not the full 4k, sure, but at least at 1440p for you.
As to the argument about how much money this is worth, I’d strongly suggest that in future you avoid that line in trying to support your position: you (and I) don’t have the information that anet do about how much money comes in, goes out, or where it lands.
Without that, it’s just a guess, and guessing about what will or won’t make money for anet really isn’t a winning way to support a position.
Instead, focus on things like experience, fun, etc, just as you did at the start by explaining you love the look of the game, and want to experience the finer detail.
