Untradable weapon skins
I remember when the first Dragon Bash happened, and all the weapons came out. My partner got four tickets. I didn’t even get one. He didn’t care about those skins, but couldn’t give me the tickets or skins so I could have one. The entire thing was awful enough that I nearly rage-quit the game. The same thing happened with the Sclerite weapons. He got a ticket, and I didn’t. He didn’t care about the skin, and I did. Nothing he could do.
I thought you’d learned from that.
I thought that too, but obviously greed won in the end.
This really blows.

Have to agree, non-tradeable skins do not make sense. Allow the people that want to gamble to be able to gamble and those that don’t be able to trade them with people that do. There was nothing wrong in this system and it creates items of value for the in game economy. There should be close to nothing that should be account bound that comes out of are a purchased by currency in the BLTCs.
Please reconsider this.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
I spent money mostly for armor skins, gliders. Never bought keys. But with this attitude toward your players Anet, you lost another customer. No more euros from me.
Would buy phoenix glider, but not now. Not one thing from store anymore.
Meh, I’m o-k with this as long as it’s a once off thing like the Immortal set, and the next few BLTC skins are back to business as usual. Personally, I think this would have been better as a nice bundle with some other stuff and choice of a skin (or three).
I’m confident the community will vote with their wallets though.

This is exactly my position now.
Forcing people to buy gems to get BLT weapons now?
I’d rather blindly buy games during the Steam Summer Sale I’ll never play than gamble for gem store trash…

Why would I buy gems and gamble when I can convert gems into cash and buy stuff? Oh, not an option for weapon skins? Maybe not an option here…
This would make sense if keys and tickets were easier to obtain, but neither are at a ywhere close to an acceptable level for this to be a positive decision.
We need better key drop rates, all the skins returned and tickets/scraps at an improved chance before going down this route if at all
I suggest anyone against this, not purchase the skin or keys in protest. Perhaps showing the team we find this unacceptable in this way, such decisions will be rethought

You really find this surprising? Most people did not get upset about the immortal weapons being tied to those package bundles. So this was bound to happen. Once again the lead of the micro-store wins.
I did not get upset about immortal weapon set because they did not give a collection achievement. This privateer weapon set gives a weapon collection.
Also, you didn’t have to GAMBLE for them. If I bought that bundle, I knew for certain I was getting to pick an immortal skin.
Cause and effect. You still bought those bundles which had account bound weapons tied to them. People got upset at the bundles (being over priced). Eventually getting them to separate items out. They probably were not getting enough revenue on bundles. So they decided you were okay with account bound tickets. Which eventually brought us to this fantastic idea. It comes full circle.
That doesn’t even remotely make sense. To even get to that conclusion would mean that they are either not reading the feedback they were given about the bundles, or were incapable of understanding it. Especially as this brings us BACK TO WHERE WE STARTED with untradeable BLT skins, and they knew that method was hated because they CHANGED IT. It came “full circle” because someone somewhere along the line got greedy, and maybe also can’t seem to grasp how the BLT skin situation is completely different from the Immortal skin situation, despite it being spelled out clearly for them. Though I don’t think the latter has anything to do with this, honestly. That logic is reaching.

If they think people are ok with it, it won’t be. This isn’t like the Immortal skins, this is repeating history that supposedly they learned from.

Really disheartening… hope they speak up about this somewhere. Guess we should monitor Reddit since they seem to flock there.

Guaranteed a ticket scrap (like they did with the shards), then in the random stuff, chance for additional tickets (i got two scraps in one chest one time), and chance for a whole ticket.
But how it is now? So bad….horrible horrible decision
We shouldn’t get junk boosters and other trash items from using a key. Change that and I think people would happily treat themselves to a few keys every so often.
Real money should give shinies….not sadness.

Not unless they up the amount of whole tickets that drop or lower the amount of scraps needed to make one.
$10 worth of gems could buy you ~2 weapons when converted with the old system thanks to the high value of gems and burn out on BLT weapons resulting in low launch TP prices..
800gems only buys you 6 keys with a bit of salami left over.
If I can spend $10 (not all of it I know) of gems on keys and not get a weapon then the system is still terribly flawed.
(edited by Substance E.4852)
Poorly executed. While I don’t like the idea of account-bound skins (I had forgot the immortal weapon skins existed), I don’t think they rolled this out well either.
If this were my job, and I had to make an account-bound set as appealing as possible, I would pair it with a 50% off key sale. The emphasis would be on the key sale, and I would add in the account bound weapons as something special to spend all those new black lion claim tickets on. I think a lot of the objections would evaporate if it were a one-off (not the new normal moving forwards) and keys were half-price.
Instead, I suspect that this will drive down key sales, since people can’t sell the skins they get.

Currently you need 10 scraps to get a complete ticket. If every chest had a guaranteed ticket, getting 10 keys would get you a guaranteed black lion weapon. And there’s still the small chance of getting a full black lion key drop on top of that.

True, but like I added in my edit, 800gems only buys you 6.4 keys or 7 if you buy a 5 pack and then 2 more.
As long as the drop rate for whole tickets is low enough that $10 could leave me essentially empty handed in the end, it’s a crap system reliant on gambling.
If we wanted to keep the ticket system then they should just do away with scraps and make it so you get a guaranteed ticket drop every ~6th box opened with maybe a very low chance of a bonus one as part of the normal loot table.
There’s no reason BLT weapons should ever cost more per unit than the NPC weapons/standalone weapons do in the gem store.
(edited by Substance E.4852)
I’ve been buying gems with money regularly to get some cosmetic stuff, but this is going too far. They’re pretty much telling players to rely on their dumb RNG boxes to get the skins. If you want me to buy gems to get a skin, then don’t make these skins bound to RNG.
I don’t play fashion wars 2 to gamble with real money.

This is something similar to the fused weapon skin situation too isn’kitten Why are they making the same mistakes?
I thought they’d learned better than this. Clearly, I was mistaken.
All the more reason to assume the next expansion is going to be full of the same problems as HoT.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.

Where did I get so faulty logic from? So let’s wind the clock back to one of the previous Halloweens when we had the gem conversion rate UI changed. It came down to one person who leads the micro-store. Remember it was the “new players find it too confusing” excuse that help shape the “new player experience" system. They used that same logic in order to change the gem conversion system.
(Scroll up to Gaile’s post. Since for some apparent reason it does not put you there when clicking this link)
However they did eventually change it back. Due to the team lead making that choice in first place.
So take it as will. However this is not the first time something like this has happened, and won’t be the last. As I previously stated the account bound only black lion weapons are not surprising to me at all.

basically, anet has to decide how much one of those weapons costs in real money, and adjust the scraps to one ticket to match that if a garunteed scrap with every chest.
If 10 is too little, then make it 15.
What people hate is, spending the money, and getting NOTHING. You could buy 10 keys, and not get a single scrap, which would be a turn off to buying more.

Yup, and when a new weapon set comes out and the price of this one goes to 5 tickets or whatever, you can forget about finishing the collection (without gambling your income away on RNG).
Great move, Anet… -_-
Putting them in boxes and sell them = okay
Putting them in boxes accountbound and RNG = not okay
BLC in general was allready a blatant moneygrub.
This new system isn’t helping that.
Although this ultimately doesn’t effect me what so ever, I can see the frustration this must cause from other players.
A horrible decision, honestly.
If you’re that desperate for Key Sales Anet, put something worthwhile in there!
It really is about cost-value ratios, especially with how high gem prices have gotten. Currently 43 gold to gamble on items not worth 1 gold. It used to be that Black Lion skins were are least partially worth the price of purchase, but with the skins being account bound, that’s one source of lucky revenue removed from the already abysmal boxes.
Why even have the weapon vendors at this point? Just have them be semi-common rewards for the stupid boxes and stop this shady gambling crap. No more pity “ticket scraps”, give a high chance for a full ticket, and maybe you’ll see those $1.50 boxes actually move.
Or at least start guaranteeing ticket scraps with each box. Seriously, is $10+ not enough for one friggin’ skin?
Again, keys are far too expensive for the crap we get out of them. Drop the cost to 50 gems, and we might be more willing to throw gem money at it. Or, genius thought, have key giveaways for buying other items from the gem store. 5 keys for every 800 gems purchased with cash; 1 key for every 100 gems spent on items from the store.
Part of the poor value of the keys themselves is that they are super rare or ultra expensive, and what you get from them is very frequently garbage. Make key rewards much more common, and it will matter less when chests give junk and it gives players more chances to get that awesome-feeling score.
“I’m finding companies should sell access to forums,
it seems many like them better than the games they comment on.” -Horrorscope.7632
Skins behind gemstore RNG was not a good idea in the beginning and it is not a good idea now either. Horrible decision to repeat the mistake.
That is rather disappointing change. I definitely will not buy keys with current items drop rate from a chest. I am already full with useless busters that i don’t need and other junk items chest drop.
Although these new weapons not even animated. Steampunk weapons that don’t have moving parts? I’ll pass.
WTF …. why?
Without going into details I know for a fact that long-term this is better for the economy.

Reading this thread, we understand your questions and want to share a little information: This set is designed to be a special, exclusive set and therefore it’s a little different than most. There are a couple of other interesting factors that you’ll want to know: The set is available for one ticket. It will remain priced at one ticket into the future, so someone who wants it now doesn’t need to be concerned about it becoming unavailable or about it rising in price in the future. Other sets currently available are not account bound, such as the Cavalier Weapon Set which was recently released at a price of 1 Black Lion Claim Ticket and remains at that price now. In addition, we do intend to continue to offer tradeable sets in the future. If you’d like a preview of the new set, go to your bank wardrobe and filter for “Privateer.” We hope this answers your questions, and thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Why is the set special? Why would we think it’s anything but you testing the waters on how much you can screw over customer before there’s backlash?

Thank you for the clarification. I do like every single skin in the set, which is unusual for me, so I’m glad to know that over time I may be able to get more.
Now please don’t ever take them off the vendor. At the very least, keep an NPC in the vaults that always offers them? I don’t gather tickets all that often

This sounds like a hastily made up “reason” designed only to quell the growing base of angry customers.
Why is it so special? Do please elaborate.

It’s the new excuse for money grabs “this item is ‘special’”
I guess we’ll have a lot of special sets in the future…
Sigh.
Still doesn’t address the fact that we basically have to gamble to get the scraps to form the tickets necessary to get these items in the first place. It’s not so much that we can’t make gold off of the skins it’s that people do not want to have to deal with RNG nonsense from things that cost money.
Yes Keys cost money if you want any real chance because the Gold to Gem Ratio is insane right now.

“Why” is pretty much what I want to know too.
While I am not necessarily against having a set here or there that aren’t tradable, there should also be a solid reason as to why they aren’t. People should probably note the bolded part of the original post. If these indeed never go away (never get rotated out), and never go up in price, I can see that as part of a legitimate reason behind not letting them be tradable. Granted, I don’t necessarily feel that accounts for “enough” of a reason, but it’s a start.
