I was directed to this thread for information about the changes to the desert borderlands. I am not finding much information. Idk why I was directed here…

I think you were referred here because of these statements and a link to a thread that may be of interest to you, as well:

Two weeks ago we polled the WvW community about Desert versus Alpine borderlands. The majority of players asked us to bring Alpine back. We’ll do that. It actually takes quite a bit of time to dust off old content and bring it up to the current game state, so it won’t happen in time for the quarterly release. Instead we’ll launch the quarterly update with improvements to Desert, use that as an opportunity to get the community’s feedback on those changes, then we’ll swap to Alpine when it’s ready. Changing borderlands maps like this will disrupt matches in progress, but we think that making changes on live servers, where everyone can test, is worth the cost.

I wanted to give this early heads-up about these areas. You already know quite a bit more about the things we’re working on for the April Quarterly Update, but I’ll stop here for now. I think our jobs are to delight you with what we ship, not with big talk or big promises. So hang tight. Release day will be here soon enough.

There seems to be a lot to look forward to – and the developers seem to be reprioritizing the game back toward the living world concept, which is good – but there is still one line item that always seems to slip between the cracks during these discussions -

What are the plans for guild missions?

Are they part of the responsibility pool for any of these development teams they keep talking about? Are they even something they plan to continue supporting or have they gone the way of dungeons? Are they on hold like legendary weapons?

I – and others – have asked these basic questions in dozens of posts the past few months – as well as during the recent AMA. In every case, the questions have been drowned out or outright forgotten about.

I wish Anet would at least let us know if they are part of the plan moving forward. People talk about the last time fractals were updated, but PVE guild missions have experienced a much longer drought in terms of anything new.

So we’re a week into April and still not word one about balance changes. a.k.a. “we may tell you about them, but we haven’t left ourselves enough to react when the players point out some ridiculously broken new interaction it’s going to cause. Again.”

The problem is the names and faces change but the company DOESN’T LEARN. You have habits in your corporate culture that lead to repeating the same easily avoidable miss-steps over and over and yet you just can’t close that feedback loop to stop doing those things most of the time.

Go back and look at your population curves for Orr for the six months following launch and see if you don’t see something spookily familiar with what’s happening in the HoT maps…

nods in agreement That’s because the person at the top of that corporation (ANet) remains the same, so the song (and dance) remains the same as well.

It seems likely that this patch is due next Tuesday, or at least plausible that it is. It pretty much has to be either in one week or two if it’s going to be in April, assuming that it will fall on a Tuesday as per normal practice.

So today seems like the day for the full blog of what to expect. One week isn’t enough time to do good iterations based on rational player feedback (history shows that ANet frequently does something a bit screwy in the details and is willing to correct something blatantly wrong if we bring the wrongness to their attention). Two weeks feels more in line with the promised (promised by implication at least?) increased clarity in communication.

I might be jumping the gun, it’s not 9 am Pacific yet, but I really do feel that today’s the day they should give us fuller information on what will be in the patch even if they must preface it with “subject to change, iteration will continue over the next week(s), etc.”

I would love to get more information about the patch. The problem is some people wouldn’t understand that preface and if something changes the forums would be full of whining threads.

Yes. And? Others will just quote the preface at them. ANet won’t have to police that at all. The forums are full of complaints as it is, I’d like to get a reason to praise for once.

Besides, I am 55 ley sparks, 230 obsidian shards (easy to buy with karma, I’m just waiting until I have to), and 249 amalgamated gemstones away from HOPE. I really really really want to know if that part of legendary crafting is changing and have been holding off playing the game and farming up what I need pending learning if that issue is going to be addressed. I would have even accepted “yes we are considering changing it and if we do it will be in the April patch/after the April patch” or “no, now that we’ve nixed new legendaries we’re not going to fix this problem on the current ones” as a basis for choosing how I would proceed with my game play.

I guess I’m a little less patient than usual because I have a horse in the race this time … plus I’ve been holding off finishing my first legendary ever purely due to the amalgamated gemstone thing and would really appreciate some comment. This thread gave us a heads up on other things that are changing in ways that affect in-game spending and play choices, so why not on this?

Heck, if they just say “we will have a blog and we hope to publish it on X day,” that will help end this nebulous waiting for Godot feeling.

So if you ask us for a list of things that will ship in April, we’ll probably be coy because we think it’s nice for you to have presents to unwrap on release day, but more than that, the truth is we don’t even know. We’re working on a lot of potentially great improvements for April, all themed in the direction of less grind and more rewards, and they won’t all make the cut, but any reasonable subset will make a great release.

From the AMA on reddit.

I think our jobs are to delight you with what we ship, not with big talk or big promises. So hang tight. Release day will be here soon enough.

From OP’s post.

The two together made me think that Mo’s stance is to not advertise anymore what comes exactly with patches so I wonder if they won’t stop to write a blog post about their big updates.
The same goes with balance. We are one week ahead of the patch (or more ?) which is totally unreasonable to preview the balance changes, let the community discuss, review the discussion and make some changes.

Its nice to see Arena-net working towards a durable game, which if affordable for all players.

Sorry to say that the game atm. is a virtual money-sink. Hope you can fix that!

Its not just the costs for materials that needs to go down, its also the amount of slivers you get in-game that needs to go up so that you can actually make more useful items in your Guild hall.

Players love the gadgets on the trading post and other stuff. What about the gem-prices of those?

Is this the only road you follow, or are you willing to look at other options?

Better rewards, reward-tracks, legendary weapons + armor.

Isn’t it time the reward-system in GW 2 is re-assessed to make the players play the game instead of running karma and trains in PVE, EOTM and PVP?

Regarding WvW, i’m happy to hear that you are releasing Desert Borderlands with changes and present it to the community.

But that being said i do not believe bringing back Alpine will offer a lasting solution for WvW. WvW contrary to PVP and PVE needs loyal players that come to play on a daily basis. If we do not have those the server-system will collapse.

Wer have more players but they do not come out of EOTM since its purpose has changed from a waiting area into a rank-farm area.

Alot of those players now do EOTM, its simple, you get your ranks quick, and you do not really have guild and or server-allegiance.

Shouldn’t you be thinking towards a lasting solution for WvW? Before its too late instead of a half measure? I don’t think anyone wants WvW to die?

Some ideas:

- matchups with 3 different borderland maps (different fighting conditions)
- map-rotations (evry week a different map/ 4 weeks = 4 different maps), its nice not to play the same borderland map each week?
- Reasses the WvW reward system and some of the mechanics to make WvW worth playing, fe the borderlands: introduce reward-tracks (ascendet armor+weapons / legendary weapons + armor ), more keg-drops for more rank-ups, update some achievements, change the loot-system, increased rewards for kills, defences and escorting)
-Getting rid of some of the annoying wildlife and making wildlife related quests functional or removing them?
-a central map which is rated point per kill instead of point per tick, which also can be used for GVG / GVG league, competitions and a meta-event that includes all facets of battle field fighting?
-changing the WvW server-system so we can face the usa? give us a fight, fighting the same servers over and over is also a drag?

Hoping for a lasting solution or a positive start on it.

With kind regards:-)

That’s why I said it was likely or at least plausible for next Tuesday. Though I could see them ending SAB and then giving a week for feedback ><

I just don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask them to give some idea of what’s coming. Surely they have some more things locked in from when MO first posted this heads up? Sure at that time the only specifics were those that gave warning so players wouldn’t be blindsided by disappearing achieves in fractals and the like, but it’s been a while longer now and time keeps on slipping slipping slipping … into the future …

(I was born before that song came out. Dunno why it is suddenly ear worming me).

Hi all,

Two weeks ago I posted that we were starting integration and final testing for the Spring Quarterly Update. It’s been two busy weeks. The quarterly update is through QA and looking good. We’re going to announce the release date tomorrow.

As we prep for release, you’ll notice that we’re not doing the series of advance blog posts that we had done for some prior releases. Hopefully that’s not too surprising; I’ve written a few times since taking this role that I think our job is to delight you with what we ship, not with talk and promises.

With everything prepped now, let’s have some fun together and see some hints of what’s coming, and then we’ll see you in the game on release day.

Fair enough. It’s a little harder to get hyped for it, when we know so little about what it includes, but I’m looking forward to the release!

Ok. I think it’s a mistake not to give some idea of plans once they are as solid as this update’s seem to be. I mean, look at the commander tag price thing that fortunately was saved thanks to community response and a couple of devs working over the weekend. That aside, even something as hush hush as Force Awakens had teaser trailers well in advance. ZeniMax manages to release very detailed information about upcoming DLCs and system changes pretty far ahead of live implementation.

But ok. At least now we know that ANet is back to the loose lips sink ships buttoned down silence of old. Giving us information is apparently just “talk and promises” that we obviously don’t need. /s

Unless “some hints of what’s coming” means that tomorrow will hold more than just “it’s coming on x date.” Guess we’ll see on the morrow.

And then I can decide whether to proceed on making amalgated gemstones, though with my current resources +70 gold more of incandescent dust I can make all of 64 of them, using over 3 years of gathering materials to do it.

I love this game, I really do. I’m just feeling a bit disillusioned and condescended to. Please, Mr. O’Brien, please do delight us with what you ship in this update.

Hello Mo, what promises are you talking about when you say that everything is ready? WE DON’T WANT PROMISES, we want info of what’s to come!

When it’s ready, why are you afraid to talk about it? And hints? Seriously? The Christmas is not coming and those (allegedly finished) features are not some gifts. Why do you want to play Santa?

I’m not speaking for everyone but I’m sure I’m not alone when I say:

We don’t need promises, teases, hype. We want to know what to expect. We want an overview of what’s to come and what’s finished for the upcoming patch.

It is actually a false dichotomy. There are many more alternatives to promises other than silence. Sadly, there are many alternatives to delight too, which we have seen quite a lot of recently. You had three times of development and there are about two weeks left – most of the things should be already completed or very close to completion.
So the lack of actual information leaves me personally disappointed already, and I think I’m not the only one who feels that way. I thought the big AMA on Reddit and clear communication were signs of increased transparency and valued community feedback. Sad to see I was wrong.
Well, let’s see about that delight part then.

It is almost like I progressed back to the way I felt about the game before HoT was announced. Only this time there isn’t only a lack of updates and changes there are also a number of changes I do not like on top of that.
To be frank, I haven’t had such a low level of interest in the game as well as such low expectations on whatever is coming.
I dearly hope this won’t be another one of times where we get a summary or preview and no actual details.
The last time we got a “summary” of all of the great changes happening to warrior balance turned out to be nothing worth talking. Just one example out of many.

We might never even get whatever is promised to begin with. Makes me feel like this is the new strategy. Do not promise anything or give any details so there won’t be another huge letdown like with the legendaries.
And even then, the actual honesty and explanation of the issue still impresses me even if I do not agree with it personally.

Well at least we get a release date. Hopefully some teasers about all of the things coming with the patch, even if it’s a vague list of one sentence items. We already know about the ones they’ve announced. Here’s to hoping there are some surprise unannounced features planned.

And the more I thought about it, as disappointing as it is, with Super Adventure Box ending next Tuesday and the pvp season wrapping up it wouldn’t really be that farfetched to assume they want to add a week break in between those and the update. Hope I’m wrong, but pretty sure that’s been the plan.

And no need to go all, “I’m a paying customer,” “I demand..,” or general comments of malice. I’m not going to say I’m happy with this drought, but at least we’re getting SOME responses.

I do have to agree with some of the negative posts about there probably being nothing big planned that they haven’t already announced though, sadly.

True but one would assume that with both leagues and SAB ending on Tuesday that the logical thing to do would be to release the update then.

Unless they run into a serious issue that needs to be addressed before shipping, it makes little sense to end two big events on the same day and tell the community to wait a week until the mystery update drops.

All they would do is make people angry and invite a deluge of “why can’t I play SAB for another week if we have to wait a week for the update?!” posts.

Pretty sure this is just Mo leaving wiggle room.

Actually, you could make a case for delaying the update. With both big event ending on the same day, there’s bound to be a rush to finish, and a part of the playerbase may suffer minor burnout. Giving a week off let the players rest a bit before the new stuff comes in, supposedly including the need for WvW feedback from the players.

So if anything people hoped to be in the patch is not there the claim it was removed is equally as valid as it was never going to be in? Remember you do not need to be detailed. Saying ‘feature X may be changed’ is ok with me …. it does not take in-depth research to see what the top complaints people are making about that feature are and guess you will do something about at least one of them.

Take a lesson from the BBC when it comes to new seasons of Doctor Who. They release a whole series of clues but they are incredibly vague. So much so that the majority of the time they do not spoil anything until they come on the screen. I am sure something or other was dropped and people justified the clue with something else. Oh, and it is always known some of those clues could be wrong too. They do not make people want the final product less, they heighten the desire to see the final product.

Hiya, Mike.

Although I agree with you that a job done is more important than talking about it and promising stuff, I still hope that you won’t leave fans completely in the dark in regards to which direction the game is going towards.

Another thing is the importance of fan feedback. Yes, we can say that one of anet’s weaknesses has been to promise too much and deliver too little. But I can also point out that another of the company’s weaknesses has been at revamping current systems without success, getting a barrage of negative feedback, and then having to revamp them again. This is a waste of development time that could have been avoided if fans knew of the future systems before hand and pre-emptively pointed out their flaws.

Good comms from the man I think.
I’m sure they will release it when it is ready™.

So, he mentioned hints. Have we seen any yet?

A lot of hints :

  • scribe costs will be reduced
  • daily fractals will be changed
  • beta testing new rewards in WvW (update day)
  • beta testing population solutions in WvW (reset following update day)
  • rewards in HoT maps / events : reduce grind and improve rewards
  • a new legendary shortbow
  • improvements on obtaining the new HoT gear

Things we won’t have in April

  • no LS 3 (have to wait until July)
  • no new fractal
  • no other lengendary weapon
  • no change on how Agony and Agony Resistance works
  • No plans for graphics engine update
  • no keyrings

So basically no new content. Well, that makes the decision whether to return or not really easy – thanks!

On the flipside, If arenanet isn’t releasing new content, I’m expecting them to fix, refine, and balance what we already have. The game needs a lot of work, and to keep releasing shoddy content while there’s a lot needed to be fixed would be a mistake.
