What Will Community Do If HoT Is Not Xpac
Honestly, I wish ArenaNet would just come out and say “It’s not an expansion.” so people would shut up, but that wouldn’t be a good business move.
It’s not a good business move either to let hype grow when you know the news will be a disappointment in comparisson
As the saying goes, there’s no such thing as bad publicity. At the very least, the hype is creating attention for the game, even if I don’t agree with the hype. Even though I think it’s silly for people to get their hopes up, I still think it’s great that people are at least interested in what is just a few days away. I’m excited to see what changes are coming, but I’m not holding my breath, either.
Fair enough.
I’m pretty much in the same boat. As the saying goes “Hope for the best but prepare for the worst.”
Wow, civility in a forum? GASP! You rock!
I think there is no such thing as “the” community. Whatever group of players you look at, it is still a group of individuals having individual expectations and reactions, which will cover the whole range between “what a relief, no expansion” to rage-quitting. My personal guess is that whatever is announced at PAX will be welcomed by the majority of players. And those who dislike it will let us know here in the forum, leaving the impression that the majority of players has the same opinion. Then those, who are in favour of the announcement will be called white knights, the dislikers will be called toxic… you know, business as usual, until whatever will be announced finally hits the gaming rigs of the players. Then the topics will shift, but the attitude will not. And the sun will always rise.
Personally I am looking forward to PAX in a mildly curious mood. Not expecting the redefinition of MMO gaming but a significant change in the direction that GW2 is heading too. I don’t believe in a “standard” expansion anyways, that would not fit the announcement.
I think whether HoT is an expansion or not is irrelevant. Anet has planted the seeds of hope by hyping up the PAX announcement and trademarking the new logo. If they don’t announce an expansion on the 24th (HoT or some other expansion) they will have a lot of community backlash on their hands. And as others have pointed out, what else could the other 200+ employees have been working on since launch? Whether HoT is an expansion or not, Anet will announce plans for an expansion, or risk backlash.
Arenanet will give us a sneak peek how they want to expand the GW2 universe. It seems to be a new method optimised for this game. They could expand GW2 without expansion. If the volume of delivered content meets the expectations of the players these players will be happy without any expansion packs.
Since gamescom showed us that Arenanet imaginations of player’s expectations and needs are sometimes wrong – commander tag drama says hello – there is a high chance of a new misinterpretation of players expectations. One weekend would not be enough to fix it.

I find the premise that this won’t be highly unlikely so I guess we will all get our answers in 4 days time.
I just wonder how community will go if they announce some thing really lame at PAX. Can not imagine the rage.
How would it be any different from “the usual rage”?
I mean this is the cycle of GW2, people go super-hype-zomg-cantha-confirmed every time anything happens to GW2. A patch, a livestream, an expo, a change to the gamefiles, a new NPC, doesn’t matter. Confirms Cantha, guild houses, new WvW maps, new PvE maps (65-100 of them), 2 new classes, 35 new specs, 155 new abilities per class, ~600 new traits, period.
Then they rage like mad when surprise, it was… a new NPC.
Probably just continue to be disappointed with the lack of new diverse content in this game. January 26th will just be another day.
Honestly, I’d love to see an expansion or something significant, but looking back at the last two years…well, it’d be rather foolish to get my hopes up, eh?

Well, they have said for a long time that they had a big project working in the background, that they have never discussed. So that we haven’t seen anything significant in 2 years could def mean that there is reason to have hope this time around :P Since this is most likely that big project. But yeah .. Always better to just expect to be letdown to avoid dissapointment
Edit, because had some more thoughts:
But if we find out that Living World was always meant to be a way to fill the gap inbetween expansions, I will be a lot more forgiving of the lack of content received in LS

It’ll be an expansion. No rage will come from that.
However, the rage will come from Anet’s definition of “expansion”. No matter what, expect Twitch/reddit/these forums to rage by their take on what an expansion means in the gw2 universe.
Looking forward to saturday.

You’re right, but this isn’t a new NPC. Its PAX, and center stage of PAX (I think) at that. If this goes sour people that don’t normally care are going to care.
As for OP: I started getting really excited about legendary armor… Then I remembered it’s Anet, and that a more realistic view is much better. I’m excited to read the forums, good or bad the news will make the forums more interesting at least for a little while.

Accurate.
I hold no expectations of the game by now. I will continue what I am doing: make my own fun in game and complain about traits in the forum.
Most of the angry forumites will become angrier, the white knights will defend more fiercely, predictions of the downfall of the game will flow freely. More old timers will leave, however, there will continue to be fresh blood… and the game will continue.
There will be remarkably more complaining in game but few active players will leave… and, as I said, the game will continue.

What will happen if HoT is Expansion?
- Nothing, I will not buy it, because RNG will hit it and I won’t catch it.
What will happen if HoT is not Expansion?
- Nothing happens, RNG will just take my enjoyment from the game. So better way is just play Login Wars.
Sorry Anet you just lost one of your customer for future expansion. I will continue Login Wars and get even something from game.
GW2 isn’t going anywhere, with an expansion or not. While the lack of an additional updating-model aside from LS will shortens its’ life-span, I believe the game is healthy enough to be there for a long time.
The expansion is about using that potentional that once hyped MMO players to buy the game. The potentional to take a step forward instead of revamping existing content over and over again.
Doesn’t really matter, the things I want to see fixed aren’t going to get fixed anyway. An expansion(or just new professions) would probably just pile on new ones on top of the existing ones.
I would actually be rather happy that it wasn’t an expansion pack. What? Blasphemy you say?
See, I loved expansions in the original GW, because it worked – each one was it’s own contained story, with it’s own skins and locations. For GW2 though, something that banks (thusfar) on a living story every 2 weeks, I feel like things could go incredibly wrong with an expansion. Let me elaborate:
If there are new areas within the expansions pack, then it would be feasible to believe that you cannot get to those areas without it. If any living story instances would then take place within there, than the only players of the game who will be able to play the living story will be those who own the expansion pack. This means that you will either need to have two living stories running at once (one for the expansion, one for the main) so both can have it, ignore the expansion with living story (so both can have it), or ignore the main (so only those with the expansion can play it). Considering mixed opinions on current story, that could cause some to worry as to quality of the stories being put out – and let’s not kid ourselves, like it or not the Living Story is one of the things that sets GW2 apart from the others.
sPvP – considering a lot of ANet’s regular excitement comes across as tourneys and the likes, they’d need to have things balanced. Anything new skill or class wise is going to have to be balanced – and if skills are added to main classes but require expansion, some of the competitive folks may get rather annoyed at that.
Races – oh man, that could be a clunker of a mess to do. If they start at low level (like 1), then that means more areas of lower level for people to complain about being way too easy to explore with their already maxed folks. Personal story could still work easy enough I’d imagine (considering how it’s boxed out). Probably be a sure-fire way to make people buy more character slots though, I’m sure.
I don’t know, I’m sure they have that all figured out if they do an expansion, but I guess most my worries come from the idea of it being this separate boxed expansion. If it’s just an ingame expansion (ala LS) I could see it working fine, but if it starts segregating content I feel like it will be a disappointment (at least to me).

I would do as this song says, and just carry on.
All great songs like this one always give good advice, from Pault McCartney’s “We All Stand Together” to Bloodhound Gang’s ""The Bad Touch".
I think the difference between this and previous disappointments is that this is going to be seen more as “this is it”. Other, smaller and less hyped updates weren’t “the big thing in the background”, and they weren’t actually thought to possibly be expansions.
Whatever comes on Saturday, it’s very possibly going to define what it is that GW2 will be for the forseeable future. Expansions, LS, or other. If it’s bad, then there isn’t anything to be optimistic about any more because the cards will actually be on the table for once. The people who are still around because “there might be something good around the corner” simply won’t have that motivation any more.
I’m not expecting expansion, but I’m expecting better than Living Story.
With as much hype as they’re generating for this announcement (I’ve even started seeing ads for it on YouTube), if its not something suitably big, expansion or otherwise, its going to be catastrophic. This isn’t like previous “big announcements” where it was just one dev comment hyping it up. This announcement is everywhere. In-game, website ads, community giveaways, the whole 9 yards.
I just hope they can deliver on the hype, because if they can’t… well, to quote Trahearne “This won’t end well”.
The same thing that happens when any hype train crashes and burns when its dreams are crushed. >_>
Nobody who didn’t delude themselves in to believing that they knew what was best for the game will be upset if there is no expansion.
The same deluded souls would have you believe that the game is a sinking ship with only a handful of people left who will rage-quit if there isn’t an expansion.
Meanwhile, the thousands of lucid players will welcome new content in whatever form it takes and continue playing without the weight of constant angst and sense of entitlement.
The caustics on the forums will also do what they do every day – complain, yell and claim to quit the game every 2-3 days. Again, same old same old.
Mind you I haven’t seen too many I quit threads lately.
There are those of us that have not allowed our hopes to be raised. That way we won’t be disappointed but may be happily surprised. To answer your question though – People were raging before, having them continue to do so afterwards would be no different.
honestly, my hopes are somewhat high, but i always expect the worst. i’ll probably just sigh really heavily and take a break from the game.
My hopes are needlessly high though, to such an extent that I’m intellectually unable to enter the same ‘expecting the worst’ mindset.
Smile and be as happy as I can…
What will the community do? Idk but there will be a new option for the disappointed come March now that TESO is going B2P… different game but, yeah.
I can’t see Anet going to all this trouble…registering the trademark, “leaking” it, tacking what’s essentially a commercial for the PAX appearance onto the end of a cine, and engaging in frantic retconning if this is just a LS installment to be announced. Never mind rage, the snickering from both the players and Anet’s competitors would be louder than Mordy’s roar.
So I’m expecting something significant. Exactly what is hard to say, but we’ll know in a few more days.
Guardians of the Vault [GotV] and Guíld of Dívíne Soldíers [GoDS]

It’s going to be a new class or classes with new personal stories and a few new zones to support those new classes and personal stories. Something that will link with the Living Story. It’ll involve Rytlock and the Dragon Egg.
Some new traits, skills, skill points, vistas, etc. Maybe even some new gear and a new type of ‘trait’ like agony or something along those lines.
All downloadable.
It will not be an ‘expansion’ in the traditional sense, and then the flames will ignite the forums . . . hardcore.
Players will eat through this content in less than a week. And then the flames will become an inferno.
If it won’t be an expansion (a.k.a multiple new zones, dungeons, PvP modes etc… I dont care about form of delivery) I will just quit playing for like 9 months like I already did 2 times and come back to check what is new again most likely during the finale of LS season because it is the most (arguably the only) interesting part of the LS.
There is enough competition in the market hungry for my money and since I dont mind spend money on games (even monthly) I will most likely try ESO once again for at least a month and then go back to SWTOR (with sub).
No forum drama or ragequits ;-)
If it isn’t a expansion well …
Well I hold my judgement untill I see what it is, maybe what they introduce is equally good or maybe not.
If it’s equally good no problem! If it’s not I’ll probably have to start thinking about taking a little break because all the dynamic aspects seem to have slowly drained out of the game Living story is the only dynamic part we still have and lets be honest those updates were half an hour of content tops. (well if you have a job like me you can maybe spread it across 2 days but still not much). Love the game been with it since launch never quit not even once, not planning to really but it does get kind of boring after 3 years if nothing substancial happens by now.

if it isn’t xpack people will just leave the game and it will slowly die we need more content in a huge scale but this is all in anet hands most of players right now doesnt even care anymore
What will I do? Simple, I will sit back and laugh at all those morons who generated this hype and mass hysteria out of their own fantasies and who are now threatening to ragequit if Anet don’t fulfil these imaginary promises. Anet has announced nothing yet these pages are filled with rubbish about new races, classes, expansions, lands and other figments over over-active imaginations. I will listen to/read their announcement without any false pretences or hysteria.

It’s funny because from my perspective the game is already far larger than other games in both scope and landmass. What it needs is content within the existent areas.
But then players seem to hate that idea on average and would rather see older content constantly atrophied while a steady stream of a handful of new zones is fed. See: MMOs.
Is a bit of a weird one to me because I would have thought that a huge always-current-level open world is more desirable than a tiny current area depending on xpack.
Yeah. I am simply assuming that HoT is some sort of new legendary weapon that not only has variable stats, but a variable type (can be a staff or a GS or a hammer).
Anything else, and I will be pleasantly surprised.
And, if it has something to do with fixing the sorry state of WvW, I think I will have a heart attack.

Well if you go into the game and open your map you will see a heck of a lot of unopened land mass which I’m certain is there for a reason. I think it’s quite obvious the world will expand and yes they likely will return to areas and add content much the same as they have done through living story.
I think it’s sad that should the game grow with something like an expansion people automatically think the remainder of the world will turn into a dead zone. People still return to the old areas today and while they may be empty for a while it’ll all be back to normal when the luster wears off. It also gives players that much more to go back and revisit while content is added, nothing wrong with that especially with the Megaservers.
Oh and as far as largest land mass in an MMO, it doesn’t even come close to games like Asheron’s Call or even Vanguard, not to mention upcoming ones like Black Desert and they were seamless. Give Anet a chance to open all of Tyria before you call it a failure.

Gather all, and listen to what I am about to tell you. Such is my prophecy, told unto me by the Six True Gods, and so I pass now unto ye.
Ware the train of hype, for its warm eyes and charming smile hide what lays within. Conducted by the devil, the train does not lead to paradise, as many of its drunken revelers would tell ye, it leads instead to a pit of despair. On the day of reckoning, the train will fall off the Cliffs of Desolation, taking all into a realm of nightmare.
There will be no spears, no new weapons for any profession. For such is not the way prosperity through peace that the ’Dev’ils would proclaim.
There will be no new class crawling from the pit, no… only the same old classes will pull free from the wreckage, and they will have hearts festering black with anger and molded by the stains of betrayal. The revelers would cry of new skills as they invite you onto their canflageration of doom, but of such there will be none.
‘Ware the train and it’s ‘hype’! ‘Ware the revelers in their pre-emptive celebrations! The forums will run red with the post of ’Dev’ils, proclaiming they made no such promises. They say an An’Gaile will descend in an attempt to restore order, but she will be pelted with the stones and slings of trolls from the realms below. ’Ware fair reader! ’Ware!
Such was the prophecy I heard, and such has it been passed on. ’Ware you who will tread soon in a land bereft of hope and reason, a land where trolls rule both caverns, jungle, and the realms of Men, Norn, Charr, Asura, and Sylvari. ’Ware the Heart of Thorns, for it will make you bleed.

It’s really a new line of Scarlet Briar action figures and other Scarlet Briar paraphernalia, like a Scarlet Briar lamp and Scarlet Briar body pillow.
Riots. Everywhere.
I’m personally hyped for it… I will be honest, I would be disappointed if it is not an expansion – but I still have plenty to do in the game (I just like exploration/discovery a lot).
It will definitely be an xpac. But they might not call it an xpac.
There will definitely be new story content, new maps and new features.
But everything else is up in the air.
