Thats what i am asking myself abot this game sometimes.
For example, I mean things like the main theme of the Living Story is Technology (the stuff Scarlet takes/steals all the time) which usually is sci-fi and a big part of the Personel Story is to get people together to face evil (the Pact) which is more from a j-rpg.

Semi-Modern (since we have gunpower and glass windows and ships) with a fantasy element (races, magic) on a multiplayer scale.

And since they like to call WvWvW Wuvwuh, lets dub this SumFum (related to Sumthing).

The “B” stands for “Berserker” as that is the only gear and therefore playstyle you will ever need.

If you’re asking the question honestly, it’s a cross-genre game. It has magic, which is fantasy. Adding technology doesn’t make it science fiction. Some would call it science fantasy..but many games/books and such have been going cross genre. It’s been happening for a long time.

Seriously, it is just steampunk fantasy.

Theme would be slightly steampunk – though it’s not pure since unlike Bioshock, we’re not seeing cogs, gears and rivets all around :p

We could describe it as medieval fantasy too – due to castles and such…

Simply put: it’s a variety of fantasy sub-genres smooshed together (often times without much consistency).

That seems to be changing. I’ve never had a pleasant experience in TA Aetherpath with anyone in full zerk gear. They’re always the first to drop dead in the party and we had to kick a few of them because simply they can’t do the dungeon in that gear.

It’s an interesting debate if what we call ‘science’ can be described as just magic natural to our world and understanding.

I honestly never seen a forum where a “general section/discussion” isn’t flooded with complaints. I’ve been a moderator in one and when I close/merge their “self righteous complaint” thread – I get harsh PMs and later, a spam. lol

Exactly, there is virtually no difference between very advanced technology and magic.
I mean Asura use Magic pretty much like we use Electricity. A resource, you use it through technology but can’t interact with it directly (We can’t do a Force Lightting á la Star Wars and not all Asura are magic users).

It is not science fiction. It has a few trappings of sci-fi, and a few more of steampunk. But it’s all just technobabble.

There is no science involved at all. But this is true of all games, even ones like EVE, which is more space opera than SF, or TOR, which is just fantasy with spaceships.

I doubt a real SF game would be very fun.
