When this first game came out the first month it was a blast, but had lots of bugs and crashes, so i stopped playing for a couple of weeks until they fixed a few things.

Now i come back playing in Nov and no body is around ppl are being a bit kitteny and lots of area’s are empty.

I’ve died total of 150 times on two characters only who are lvl 36 and 20.

Is it GW2 or just ppl are bored already?

The Lost Shore patch divided the community and a lot of players are pissed cause Arena Net broke a very important promise. In addition, you now have to spend a lot of your time sitting in Lion’s Arch and spamming “lfg/lfm” if you want to do the new dungeon, which is the only way to get the best in slot gear. You can’t level your twinks if you are wasting your time spamming stupid text messages.

There are other things besides FotM (Fractals of the Mist). People have this mentality that MMORPG’s are all about having the best gear. There are other things that players can do in GW2:

1) Help other players
2) Complete all achievements
3) Finish all Jumping puzzles
4) Obtain lv400 in all crafting disciplines
5) Craft unique items using mystif forge
6) Level up all character types
7) Join a guild and beat all dungeons pathways
8) Fill all crafting slots with 250 items
9) Get all mini pets
10) Have fun!

The point is people pay too much attention to getting the best gear, which Anet has provided via FotM and Ascended gear – but you are still not happy about it because it requires grinding/commitment.

Exactly so in my case. I need info from Anet as to what this game is and where it is headed before I invest any more time and money into it. Depending on what they say I may stay or go.

Right now I’m in the dark. I hope this AMA tomorrow provides the info I need to make my decision. In any case if they stay clammed up and unresponsive I’ll assume the worst and ask for a refund.

When better gear is made available it is optional in the same way that levelling is optional. You don’t technically have to do it but if you want to have full access to the game’s content you will eventually be required to. The blogs by ANet staff have made it clear that they are planning new content based around ascended gear. That means if ascended gear is ‘optional’ to you then you’re not going to see very much of that new content.

Most players understand this, which is why they feel forced to run fractals. If you genuinely don’t care then good for you, but don’t deride other players for being frustrated about having to do content they don’t enjoy just to keep up with future releases (a situation this game was promised never to have).

1) You say, and I quote, “…being frustrated about having to do content they don’t enjoy just to keep up with future releases.”. So you don’t enjoy doing any of the points I mentioned above? Couple this with the Ascended gear related content basically leaves a player with nothing to do. There are lots of other things to do in this game, however, players don’t want to do that but prefer to get better items – hence why FotM and Ascended gear was introduced.

2) Grinding, IMO, is doing the same thing over and over untill its done. Yes, my above points can be taken as grinding, however, one can switch between them so the process doesn’t feel like grinding (i.e. tedious, boring and/or annoying). People are annoyed with Ascende gear because they can’t find anything else to do within the game or they don’t want to.

3) In all honesty where did people think that end-game content would go. Afcourse it would go in the grind directon, with perhaps some extra jumping puzzles and events. However, overall it would be lv80 related.

Honestly, don’t you think the things you’re saying are starting to make it look like you’re trying too hard to enjoy the game? We, the players, are supposed to have fun playing the game, we’re supposed to enjoy the game regardless of what we do. So with that being said, we shouldn’t be the ones trying hard to keep the game fun and happy, I think that’s A.NET’s job and right now, as you can see by the people posting on here, they’re not doing too good of a job.

Honestly, I just got bored. WvW never changes. The dungeons are ugly and boring as heck. The games fun for a little at 80 but this was a game with no end game in mind. Now they are just adding cheap and lazy coded mini dungeons for gear progression that was not supposed to be in the game. Said by Anet themselves.

Obviously they realized no ones going to play after 2 months so they added this new dungeon feature. Regardless it broke there M.O. and its only time before they break others (pay to win cash shop).

I had a blast in the 2 months i was VERY hardcore into this game. I put 600 hours into my warrior. I am maybe 2 weeks from my legendary wep in grind time. I just dont care anymore. Why get a legendary when theres nothing to use it on lol.

Its simple.

The games not as much fun on repeat, and a lot of people have already done everything that they deemed fun, a lot of people twice by now, anything more just really ends up being tedious.

WvW didnt live up to my expectations, its certainly not anything like Daoc, its just a chaotic flipfest, and while still fun, definately not something I can do all day every day.

Its just like any other game, just here it happened a lot quicker then in most games.

Cant recall another game where I had 4 maxed level toons within 3 months of it releasing.

So now I just log in, fart around, and log out. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t feel bad about it one bit. Its not like Anet is charging me a monthly fee to be bored, so I will just keep logging on now and then, farting about, and when the first expansion hits I will take a look at it, and if its worth it, i’ll buy it.

Allways said, and get warning for this but at this moment I dont care, I think Anet hired some koreeans there, koreeans games are all about this: daily quests and huge grinding. Or they got a new idi*ot boss in some departament there… we all have one at work and when he start his sentences with “I think…”, you lose your hope in humanity.

I play alot of MMOs, in some you need to grind alot in others take ages to lvl.

GW2 was a super game when I read about it and buy it, but I never seen an 180° turn in a game like I seen this month. And to fk up like this after only 3 months from releasing the game. LOL?

In my org there is a debate going on concerning the grind state of a game that was promised not to be a grind[see the GW2 manifesto vid]. Some are claiming that people are just assuming they need this grind for gear and that it doesn’t make much of a difference. I do not see a lot of evidence to support this claim though. If there is official clarification I have not seen it. I do know this, at lvl 80 in rare gear upper levels outside areas are difficult at best.

What appears to be happening in the opinion of some is that GW2 has become the same old grind , only prettier and harder than the old games we left to come here.

I don’t want to grind for gear, I don’t want to feel like I’m being forced to submit to the whims of a zerg team to survive, and I sure don’t want to be leap frogged over, trained and abandoned by other players trying to get around content that is so annoying that they don’t want to deal with it ether.

Just some input on why some may not be playing.

This is exactly what’s happening. Those of us loyal fans who are still here waiting for an explanation might be leaving as well if this situation isn’t handled properly and promptly because I can handle them adding a new armor set but when they try to force me to play 1 dungeon only for everything including drops for mats for crafting end game gear, there’s something seriously wrong.

50%+ had already left before the patch, and the ones complaining about it, are the casuals that still play the game.

Oh, and 1 dungeon with slightly better gear doesnt turn the game into a gear grind. Its still very linear and casual.

I loved GW2, i loved leveling, i loved the endgame content, WvW, easy to get exotics, jump puzzles, exploration, dungeons when i wanted to.

kittening perfect really, and then the ascended gear comes in.. man was i surprised at that, i thought this game was supposed to not go down that path…

I got my ascended backpiece a few days ago, but the game stopped being fun, and my closest friend felt the same and quit, and so did i now.
I dont want to do a dungeon because i need to in order to get my gear, or farm countless hours to get the gold for mats, i want to do dungeons or even farm when i want to for rewards im in no hurry to get, like better looks as it was supposed to be.

Soo my time is at an end, i quit and so do the few friends i played with, but i will be checking patchnotes and forums to see if changes are made to the new stupid grind.
Thats whats causing me not to play GW2

The last update is why, fractals have fragmented the population between different difficulty settings, and since they added the power creep along with it that’s all people want to do. Everyone else just quit because thats not what they wanted out of this game, yet Anet ignored the players negative feedback anyway. Same mistake that kills every MMO eventually.

The game had a huge end game, it just was optional and not needed. My main had his Arah Set next I wanted to get the cultural armor for my first twink and I was think about the Ascalon Set for my second. I did a lot of WvW and played dungeons for fun too. That’s exactly the kind of end game I expected since I’m from GW1.

Some players had left before, that’s true, but what did you expect? Blizzard made Pandas available and so the gear locust left.

There are external factors that play into this more than anything else.

We’re in the pre-holiday season, which means many AAA game releases, from Halo 4 and Call of Duty, to many other titles across multiple genres. This game has no sub, so people do not feel obligated to constantly have to play, and can afford to take a break, play some other games, and come back.

I my self stopped playing for about 3 weeks to play some other games, I beta tested Planetside 2 and picked up Halo 4, and with all my life obligations, I cannot simply play all these games, and continue playing GW2 at the same time. It’s reasonable to assume people will play this game in cycles, people will take breaks with major releases and then come back. Just wait til games like GTA5 come out and whatnot.

My server is always packed. Still large zergs roaming around the lower and middle areas… the high level stuff is always packed.

Is it always 100% packed ..no… Sure 0700 on a Wed morning will net you less people… but the weekends and weeknights at 1900-0100 is good times.

..so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn’t stop to think if they should

Simple, it’s boring. When I first started playing, it was for the promise of a new three faction RvR experience. The huge flaws in the design/mechanics choice made by AN became glaringly apparent very early on. It only became worse as time wore on and instead of paying attention to past successes the developers neutered WvWvW even more, turning it into just another mini-game with no actual relevance. The PvE is too lackluster (dull and repetitive) to compensate (easily hit level cap, with almost no character progression). Had the WvWvW been even half as fun as DAoC the PvE shortcomings would have been forgotten (I wasn’t here for the PvE anyway), but as it stands, it fails on both fronts.

For me, it’s the lack of challenge and reward. I think the fractals were interesting and the agony slightly intriguing, but combinations of the implementation of the level system being so rigid, the encounter mechanics for some fractals being absurd at the higher levels (almost requiring certain group make-up), and the drops necessary to progress being so grindy to get (via crafting or low rate RNG drops)… sigh. I can’t say it’s all fractals, there’s so much more but I don’t wanna get into it because it just feels like wasted breath at this point.

People started leaving well before the release of Fractals. Some for lack of progression/grind, some for lack of no-grind content, some because of the many bots and bugged events.

I think it’s the uncertainty about what direction the game is headed. People are waiting to know more.

this is where I stand a bit.

Gear Treadmill… know what game perfected that? WoW. Know what game I am not playing? WoW.

Well the reason I no longer play is because I didn’t play the weekend Lost Shores was release. I didn’t get to log in until 2 days after and by then I couldn’t find a group to even try FOTM.

I pre purchased this game after playing GW1 since it’s release and watching the MMO Manifesto. The things I was told and saw were what I wanted from a new MMO, something that if I took a break from and came back I’d still be geared and ready to go to new content but that’s no longer the case.

I feel lied to by Arena Net employees and I know my words may never reach their ears, so I’ll NEVER support Arena Net again, my wallet is closed to you Arena Net since money now a days speaks far louder then any words.

My personal feeling on this is that the only way poor players can make money in the game, farming, is currently bugged. Yesterday I jumped on one of my lower toons to lvl them up, got annoyed by the low amount of drops and what was dropping was not good enough to replace the lower than required gear they were using for that area, so I closed the game and played with my iphone for a few hours.

Today I jumped on my lvl80 toons, did the ori gathering and switched the game off for a couple of hours. Then came back and tried to lvl one of my lower toons again and was lucky to upgrade 4 of their gear in about 8-10 hours of play.

The grind does get boring when you are doing the same things over and over without any variety. This is why when doing the pent/shelter/jofast run I will also do related events to break up the boredom, but sometimes its not enough especially when you are waiting around for what seems like 15 minutes for an event.

Whats worse is the grind is sort of required when you do other things like WvW because of the cost of lvl80 exotic armor repair which can eat away at your coin without you realizing it.

On a related note, the “rumor” (haven’t seen anything official) that the more you farm an area/foe type the less you get from them (anti-farming code) also makes the grind less appealing. If the rumor is true, you are forced to grind to make coin, but in doing so you are punished, meaning you get less return for your time, resulting in you having to grind even more.

Basically unless I’m leveling a character, doing WvW or playing with guildies (who are all in a different country) there is not much to keep me engaged. And being forced to grind to keep up with armor repair costs, and teleport cost, especially with the current drop bug, is not all that appealing.

What is needed is something we can do while doing all the waiting around, whether it be for a dungeon party, or an event in orr. Something that keeps us engaged. Surely the Asurans have the technology and know how to offer us something portable to entertain ourselves while we wait for action.

I was looking forward to finding all the mini-games I had heard about during development, but it seems, apart from keg brawl, they didn’t make it into the final product, or haven’t been released yet.

When the game first came out everyone was still leveling m8. Of course there were lots of populated areas.

Now you come back 3 months in where people have several level 80’s there is no reason to be out on the maps. The only places you will see massive amounts of players are high level areas like Orr, event farming, killing dragons in events. Outside of dungeons like AC, CoF etc etc.

Like I said in another thread. its 10am monday morning…. 7 servers are full the rest are High status.

Alot of people are playing still, but they are all in specific areas. Namely, Mists for sPVP | Lions Arch for various reasons (LA was always packed before FoTM even existed just for the record) | ORR doing events | Dungeon entrances | Dragon Events | And a TON in WvWvW maps…. thats where the majority is most of the time.

So in short no servers aren’t dieing or dead, people are doing specific things now that they are 80 and the game has been out 3 months. Every now and then you will see people out farming in maps or getting 100% completion for their legendary. Other then that don’t expect to see many unless its in an area I mentioned above. But the people are there.

You quit while you had two characters not even level 40 yet…. you came back to a game where a good amount of the population has 4+ level 80’s. It should be no surprise that you see no one around.

I started playing mid-October, and so far the discouraging things are:

Profession balance issues, horrid WvW server match-ups, no one runs low level dungeons, not even 80 with any characters yet and already disenchanted with what to do after reaching 80 (I did the gear grind for six years of WoW already I’ll just go back to that if that’s all there is here), player base seems to be shrinking…

@Nayru – not really. Not for MMO’s at least.
