Other then guild missions, is there any other reason to be in a guild?

The people in map chat are usually freindly enough and answer most of the questions. I have never had any of my questions, regarding crafting, events, living story achievement go unanswered in map chat.

I know there are some hardcore WvW or PvE guilds out there that work together, but it is mostly just a large group/party to use the same chat, since GW2 doesn’t allow more than 5 people in a group.

…is there anything else that I am missing? or is a guild basically nothing more than creating a party with more than 5 people to do something?

To be honest, in GW2, being “in a guild” does absolutely nothing for you.

Like you’ve highlighted, other than guild missions, guilds provide nothing to the player.

Its basically an extended contacts list.

In gw2 there is not much group activity to do with guilds other than zerging in wvw and guild missions. I think gw2 is really lacking group content, in the previous mmo i played we had guild vs guild every sunday, there was a ranking where the best guilds were awarded with some bonus and stuff every week.

I remember reading somewhere that angryjoe stopped playing gw2 because there wasn’t much stuff to do with his guild.

This.

Most people on my server are friendly, and when I’m guesting to other servers I see the same there. But there’s so many of them, spread across all the different maps that I rarely talk to the same person twice (and if I do I don’t remember).

Whereas with my guild no matter where I am or what I’m doing I can chat with the same group of people. So we actually get to know each other, we have our own in-jokes and running gags and get to know each others skills and preferences. If I want help with something I could just ask in map and hope someone will do it, or I could go straight to someone I know from previous conversations is an expert on that topic.

My guild is made up of family, long time friends and their friends and family, and so forth. The guild bank is an easy way to help each other out with loot and crafting materials. We’ve leveled the different things in the guild as we can. We are too small to do guild missions so we are almost out of any goal for using the influence points to get. That’s about it.

Other than that if there is something you particularly want to do, you can join a guild for that.

Most of the guild bonuses are slight and have little bearing on most of the gameplay. There are a handful of guild advantages worth having but all in all most players could enjoy the game all the same without guilds. I suspect that somewhere down the road their will be an overhaul to this but doesn’t seem to be on the horizon.

Guild buffs…pretty much it in terms of gameplay. If you’re into exploiting the game to the point of boredom then finding speed run guilds will ‘help’ or WvW as you’ve mentioned…other than that…meh, you’re not really punished for not being in one, mechanically. Of course if you happen to find a group of ppl that’re like-minded that’s its own benefit.

Guild bonuses are nice. Also chatting, asking questions etc.. Running dungeons together, a guild run tends to be better than a pug for a number of reasons.

Guild Wars 2 however doesn’t have any substantial game changing benefits to being in a guild. Good and bad I guess, those that aren’t in guilds don’t really feel like they have to join a guild or that they’re at a disadvantage.

-guild missions for guild commendations for ascendent accessories
-guild perks (its not much, but its there)
-hopefully soon to be guild halls
-its a mmo, make friends
-guild teamspeak
-wvw runs
-dungeon runs
-organised events (clearing all dungeons and teaching new players how to deal with them)
-not having to deal with pugs like “NEED ELE, LV80 ZERK ONLY, NO **HEADS”
-not having to spend 1 hour in CM P2 just to blast open the gate…and then fail at it and rage quit..
-casual spvp
-again , its a mmo, people should socialise and make friends…

Being in a guild means tout are a slave for the guild master and its leaders who can use guild influence to create guild vaults and drop guild banners.

Only the people at the top really benefit.

Now some gulls are nicer and give out stuff in the vault or call you for guild banners. But generally you should look at guilds as a social tool and a means to give influence to your leaders.

If you aren’t seeing any benefits, you are just being milked for influence.

This is such a negative view (as are many in this thread). Besides notifying people of meta boss spawns, dungeon runs starting up, pvp groups forming, wvw events and having people to become friendly with, The Diplomatic Dictators on Kaineng run 4 passive buffs daily and run guild missions twice a week to get commendations for the trader. “Milking” influence is not a goal. Keeping buffs up is one goal so that everyone can enjoy increased rewards. When you combine 15% karma increase, 10% magic find increase, 5% gold increase and either 15% waypoint reduction or 5% exp gain, then you are seeing an increase of rewards you can’t see soloing. And when we hit 5 million influence, we will move to 5 daily buffs (currently at 4.4 million). If your guild isn’t giving buffs, giving help, creating a platform to make friends and/or having guild missions, then please find a new guild. Not all guilds are the same and there are numerous that are highly beneficial.

Edit – There are only positives for being in a guild while you only restrict yourself by not being in one. Even if you don’t want to to see chat for w/e reason, then you still have the ability to turn off guild chat in chat window and enjoy the mutual buffs (though you might miss events or very nice/cool people in guild)

A guild is a social group. What’s the point of a social group? Having friends to talk to and help each other out.

Also I am always in RP guilds. We have a theme, we have plot and story, we keep a lively website on Enjin full of creative writing and shared goofy screenshots and art (I am astounded at the high quality of our guild’s artists, I swear some of them should be hired by ANet asap).

Guild friends become RL friends, too.

I don’t give a fig for the game mechanic bonuses. The point of a guild for me is to be connected to and care about other people and enrich my playing experience to the point I can play for years.

To me, a guild is something like a corporation, a collective of like-minded individuals who love hanging out with each other. Of course you don’t have to be in a guild to do most content, but being able to identify yourself as a member of something does have a good feeling to it.

Aside from the guild missions, what the guild means to me is building relationships. These are a group of people that, when I log in, I see who is there and can tell by the chat what people are up to. If someone needs help with a specific thing, it is a great place to post that request and…the help generally appears. There is some amount of discussion about the trials and travails of real life…and it is kind of fun to bat that stuff around.

Yes, there may well be other ways to accomplish all of this…but for me, my guild tends to fill that spot. I genuinely enjoy playing with these guys; I learn an awful lot about the game from them; it is a great place to have discussions about new parts of the game, LS, etc..honestly I just enjoy it.
