I played a necro for a while then switched to ele since I was getting bored.

Have several spvp chars I rotate through just depending on what I feel like playing.

I’m not a girl, I am a woman, not sure if age matters here. I picked them all in this order:

1. Sylvari Ranger, because my beta was that too.
2. Norn Guardian, to go with my daughter’s Norn Ranger.
3. Human Necromancer, because I needed something do when the above mentinoed Ranger was not in game and because I wanted something different.
4. Asura Mesmer, because I wanted to get the cool GS action (and then didn’t because she is an Asura).
5. Charr Elementalist, because it made an interesting background combined with the Flame Legion Shaman father.
6. Norn Engineer, cousin to the other Norns metionened here. I was bored levelling #4 and #5 and wanted a fresh view of things. Found him a delight to play and the three levelled up competing with each other within a couple of days.
7. Human Warrior, related to the Necromancer. Because it felt like the better choice for a noble than a thief.
8. Charr Thief, my newest kitty. Because it was the last profession I had not tried yet and I wanted something to go with the Charred colour as soon as I saw the preview.

The last three are males, because I felt I needed some balance in my team. The youngest two are not yet level 80, I’ve been trying to hold them back a bit.

All professions are fun in my opinion. The one that was the most postive surprise was the Engineer.

Asura Elementalist because I like the mage types and Asuras are adorable.

My secondary level 80 is a Sylvari Ranger… Rangers are great for soloing and the Sylvari are my second favorite class.

I also have a thief, mesmer, and necromancer in training (all under level 50). Eventually I plan to have all races.

Cant say ive played an engie before, visual aesthetic seem to be lacking from that profession in the form of their kits and gadgets its like everything was designed by/for charrs.

I get Charr created the engineering profession but youd figure the other races would add their own flavour.

I picked Ranger and had it as my only main for most of my 1k hours. This is my first MMO and not to encourage the stereotype but I love animals thus the reason for my choice. I’m also the type who would shell out 50 bucks for a mount >.> However now I have a guardian and warrior also at 80. Necro and ele slowly crawling there..

My first character choice was a male Norn Engineer. I pull him out from time to time if I’m looking for a change from my main – a male Human Elementalist.

I thought it would be fun to play a race / class combo that wasn’t exactly the typical choice. On top of that he has a Nick Fury vibe going with the monocle headpiece covering one eye, and, a slightly darker (ie. tanned) skin colour.

Where the same statement was made.

Does gender really play a role in class selection? I’d think it occurs more in race selection than class. For example, guys may tend to go for chars/norn while females may tend to go for sylvari/asura/human/etc.

I don’t believe that is the case either. (I’m female with a human and a norn char, although it would have been more typical for me to go for charr – I usually play orcs or trolls were available.)

http://gw2census.com/charts.php numbers suggest that there is no significant difference in race preference between male and female players.

I play a human female guardian. And this community is so much better than WoW’s because it seems like everyone here knows that a female character they meet in-game is usually just a guy who’s playing a female character and not an actual female player. I tried a female character in WoW and some random dude came up to me and started hitting on me. It was pretty….. weird.

That happened to me in GW2. It was in the human starting zone, right after completing the intro. Dude started dancing next to me and passing complements. I didn’t have more than maybe 10 minutes invested in the character at the time, so I just deleted it. That’s how weirded out I was (didn’t want to deal with that long-term).

My next female character might be named “Steve,” and “Steve” will be packing… a rifle! In case someone misinterprets the first clue.

Anyway my first character (and main) is an Engineer because it was new, interesting, and relates somewhat to what I do IRL.

I think if you could survey why people picked their professions you might notice some gender differences in the reasons but I doubt it makes a significance difference in the overall numbers.

But in my experience it doesn’t happen often. I have 4 female characters (vs 1 male) and even my ele, who’s usually wearing as little as possible (and with light armor that can be almost nothing), doesn’t get hit on often and when she does it’s most likely to be someone from my guild joking around.

Unless you count GW1 I haven’t played other MMO’s since I quit UO over 10 years ago but getting hit on was an every day occurrence there (and it wasn’t exactly uncommon for some people to take it all the way to cyber). It seems to have gotten better since then (I suspect it’s partially that the novelty value has worn off) but from what I’ve heard of other games GW2 does seem to be better for respecting both female characters and female players.

Hi,
I also find the tone of this discussion disturbing. Implying that a female tank is “Rosy the Riveter” in real life seems more than a little like an underhanded compliment to me or at worst misogynistic.

As for my characters: Lvl 80 Female Thief Charr and Lvl 70 (so far) Female Warrior Human.

I often act as a tank for my husband’s engineer or necromancer. Well, as much as anyone is a “tank” in this game.

I also agree with PixelPumpkin that your questions seems to be trolling. Are you looking to see trends in the game? I think you won’t find as much actual gender bias in character/profession selection as you will find in forum comments.
