So I was reading that list of suggestions from the “Complaint/Request Complilation thread” Among them I found something I think that would solve a lot of our current gripes:

“Devteam that listens and either can tell us what’s possible and not and not make promises it can’t keep”

Now I think you folks listen well enough, but the part I want to you look at here involves telling us what you cannot/will not do.

Just for an example: There’s that HUGE thread on Cantha in the general forums right now. Been around for a long while too. Based on Guild Wars 1’s features, many of us have been expecting at least some of what we got then. At the very least, Cantha and Elona. The world is -not- complete without it.

But see the problem here isnt that the game doesnt have these features. The problem is that the game doesnt have these features and judging from your responses, it NEVER will.
Personally, as a vet gw1 (and now long time gw2) player, I want you developers to tell us what you WILL NOT add. Now I understand that plans change and some features that might not be planned yet, could still potentially be added. But I’m also willing to bet money that there are some features that you know RIGHT NOW, you will never add to the game. I’m getting the feeling that Cantha and Elona are just a couple of them.

I dont think it’s a stretch to say that a good number of us are still around (and bought this game in the first place) because of those expectations. I’d also be willing to wager that you devs at ArenaNet know that too. That said, tell us what you wont add! No doubt it would be unwise of you to tell us hopefuls what you wont add, as there’s a good chance a bushel of us would go find another playground instead of waiting around here praying for something that’ll never come. But regardless I thought it important to put it out there, if not for the rest of the playerbase then just for my own satisfaction.

As for the good forum-stalkers reading this, let me ask you: What do YOU think they wont ever add? How does that make ya’ feel? Feel free to criticize my post, it’s 3:30am and I’m in a bit of a mood so I might not have got everything right.

I’m a Gw1 vet… still here. Have been since Pre-launch. Anyway that out of the way. I have to admit, I was hoping for similar expansions as in Gw1. I Hoped for Cantha…. I wanted assassins. No..Thieves are not assassins. I hoped for Ritualists. I would have been happy with either.

I also hoped for an Elona expansion. Defenitely wanted to see Dervishes in some form.

What i hoped for out of the way. What we will never get, I hope.

Mounts of any form. Every day we seem to get " hey here’s a new topic, can we get mounts?" " MMO bla bla bla has mounts…. if we don’t get Mounts ….people will leave!!!!!! ESO … bla bla bla…"

DPS Meters. No no no no no no no no no and no!

" Maybe in the next expasion they can lift the cap to 90??? why not? MMO bla bla bla raised it to 90…. they are way ahead of us!!! they have it, we should have it, if we don’t get it… ….people will leave!!!" " ESO Bla Bla bla!!!"

For some reason it seems that there are many players that go from MMO to MMO trying to turn the MMO’s they play into a clone of " that game which shall not be named." And then when it does turn into a clone of " that game which shall not be named…" they complain …" hey this is a clone of .." that game which shall not be named." "

I hope the dev team stays strong. There may be things they still have to do to get the game better polished…but…. making gw2 into either a Clone of " That game which shall not be named…" Introducing any of the previous three…. or trying to make this seem more Like TESO, are not steps we would want them to make here.

I’m personally doubting whether or not they’ll ever add another region (to the size of Cantha or Elona at least.) I really gave up hope when they announced that they had no plans at all for any expansions. I’m even starting to doubt if they’ll add any races or professions. Really worried that this is all due to business on NcSoft’s part. They’ve scrubbed projects in the past and I’m concerned that theyre adopting a “we can make plenty of money with things as is, why invest in expansion-size changes?” policy towards gw2. In that case, the dev’s could only work within the limits set by the corporation. In the end, Ncsoft makes the rules of the game (literally and figuratively.)

GW2 is trying something different. They have no plans for an expansion because they hope to introduce expansion like content through the living story. There’s nothing stopping them from adding a new class, profession or land through the living story, and besides advertising and box sales, there’s no point of an expansion.

There’s no reason to expect one of the old continents to appear anytime soon, because the first one isn’t even complete. There’s still many areas left to explore, and at the current rate, the old continents may actually never happen. Will they ever actually tell you that they never plan on implementing them? No, because they’re something that could happen, they just currently don’t have any plans for them, just like expansions. Additionally, they don’t like detailing future plans because people would only complain about broken promises when it doesn’t come true, even though a promise was never made.

Lastly, if it was up to NCSoft, ArenaNet would have released an expansion, because that is what they expected, as mentioned in their earnings report almost a year ago, which ArenaNet had to clarify. More recently, they have stated that there is no decision on an expansion and it won’t be looked into until after the Chinese release.

I Like gw2. But I Kind of started souring on NCSoft when they closed down City of Heroes. That decision never made sense to me. it seemed to be a wildly popular game.

I Know i enjoyed the crap out of both CoH and CoV. but i giess i digress.

I think NCSoft rather pour their Money into making a LOT of different titles, hoping to find a Niche for each…than to invest too heavilly into any. The main problem there is…players Kind of have gotten used to playing a couple years….get an expansion…. play a couple more… get an expansion.

Even in Monthly subscription gam,es we are used to paying for an expansion. Anmd as good as the QoL changes coming on the 15th are. They are not the same as adding cantha was when Cnatha was added to gw1.

New Maps… New stories…. New skills…. new skins on Old skills.. and yes those DO matter when they make a whole new area have a distinct flavor. New Music…

Elona I loved for one feature…. Dervish!!!!

I really Hopedfor a dervish type player… or a ritualist. I reently tried to go back to gw1. But found for some reason My account was locked…. again. And it was linked to an email i am no longer able to access…. my loss.

I had hopes for TESO, that seems to be a scrub. There is EQ Next coming but that’s a year away, World of Darkness Online seems to always be delayed , delayed… Oh well…I Guess i can hold out and hope.

Living Story is not even close to being Like an expansion. When players think of a game expansion, they think of the fact that functionality In the game is … expanded.

New races
New classes
New weapons
New skills
New elites
New maps
New quest lines
New Bosses.

Now… they did destroy LA so that does Kind of make the Lion’s Arch into a new map.
They also added Scarlet I guess…

The problem is… these are … Not expansions In functionality. These are basically some people writing a continuation or addition of some sort, and then the devs give them animation. For me…the whole Lion’s Arch " story line" had the feel of… fan fiction.

Do NOT get me wrong. I LOVED gw1. I Played it from about 6 months after it was launched… Bought all of the expansions until the last…didn’t get the final one. But EACH

EACH…. added some functionality. Whether it was new classes… with new skills… the whole hero system in Elona…

As much as i loved Gw1… and love Gw2. for me…Living Story is not an expansion, it seems Like " they need something new… give them this."

The april 15th changes have the feel of an expansion to it, since a Lot of the game mechanics are changing for the better… Free trait changes ..anywhere, at anytime is good enough for me…

But to say " well, there won’t be expansions..there is Living story, and that is Like an expansion." is either to NOT know what an expansion is…. or to redefine the meaning of the word.

This is the only answer that matters, really. We can name all the things we’d love, all the things that we’ve suggested. None of it will be added, even when you get a decent following for the idea.
I’d even go as far to say that the things that were added after it was suggested, those things were already in the planning anyway, and it were obvious things to add (hairstyles, faces, etc.).

IMO adding large new areas currently will only result in more of the older areas being deserted.

Now with the upcoming MegaServer-System, this might change. I have hopes that they are waiting for this to be running smoothly and fully rolled out and then add new areas.

Having said this, I personally do not share the love for Cantha and I am not very obsessed with an expansion. I found the LS to be quite entertaining and in my opinion it kept the game alive throughout the last year. Now if they get their things sorted after the China launch, they may have brought the systems and experience to a level, where they can forge more interesting LS content, potentially with a more persistent result.

What I want to say: it may not be so obvious even to ANet themselves, where they will never go to.

There are ways to one…. add new maps, and 2… keep the old maps from being deserted. Simply have what can be a combo if story quest and Dynamic event, where you talk to Jo shmo in a new map… and he sends you as part of the quest back to some of the old maps. This way you STILL have players In the older maps.

What character levels should newly added maps be targeted at? I think it makes no sense to have new maps for levels < 80, since players do not spend a lot of time there (except for world events) and there are already enough of them.

But your idea is interesting. Is there any existing event chain that sends a player across different maps yet?

Expansion (presumably Maguma) is in works, and should be published some time next year according to NCsoft. Also, NCsoft doesn’t have much say in the way ANet manages the game, according to both NCsoft and ANet.

Guild Halls will eventually be put in. Remember in GW1, the GH island was in the same spot where Orr is now. Also since the GH was instanced in GW1, all the GH’s could share the same space. Now they actually have to find an area where they can FIT all the GH’s. This just occurred to me as I was writing this.

Race Change kit – NO. It would be cheaper to buy another slot, make the proper race and be done with it. It would only make sense if they limited the amount of character slots but they don’t.

Account-wide bag slot – this one perplexes me. You have a bank, when you craft, you already have access to al your items. I for one think this is a stupid idea as I have the max bag slots and always run out room.

GW1 vet as well, that regularly plays GW2. I really don’t understand how people can rationalize some of their generalizations sometimes.

Anywho, once upon the dev team was more transparent with us. Waaaaay back in GW1. Was it absolute transparency? No, but they were more open and they talked to us. They started out talking to us more at the launch of GW2 as well. But like the trend in GW1, they ended up having to stop because of how we responded to them. kittening about every little thing. I can’t blame them. Would you want to talk to people that only ever kittened that anything you did wasn’t good enough? I sure as hell wouldn’t.

They’ve gotten to the point where they only tell us what’s coming when it’s in a state that’s close to (if not completely) ready for deployment. Only things that they absolutely can confirm are coming, period. Why? Take a look at Colin’s last blog for example. They tried telling us what they were working on. Tried giving us a general idea of when it might be in game. They even included a variety of disclaimers to assert that nothing was set in stone. Things could be delayed or even scrapped depending on a variety of outcomes. And what happened? January 1st rolled around and the threads started popping up about Anet not keeping their promises, about lying to us, when neither of those is in fact true.

Anet will never come out and definitely say ‘we won’t do x’ because that’d be extremely stupid of them. Perhaps they won’t do ‘x’ right now, but in 5 years doing ‘x’ might be a good idea. Things change over time and to definitely limit yourself by saying ‘we won’t’ is bad for business. At best, they are playing it safe by saying ‘we have no plans for’ and that’s likely the truth. At this point, they aren’t planning on ‘x’, but it could change depending on a variety of variables. Only time will tell.

We kitten and complain that they don’t listen to us. That they don’t take or implement our ideas ‘no matter how good they are,’ but again, that’s completely not true. Keep in mind that just because we think it’s a good idea, or that it would be good for the game, doesn’t mean we’re correct.

We asked for account bound dyes. We asked for a wardrobe. Some people asked for the unification between pvp and pve. Others have asked for new maps in WvW. People have hollered loudly for account bound legendaries. We asked for ascended to be more alt friendly. We asked for free retraiting. We’re getting / have gotten all of that. Yet we still claim they don’t listen? That they don’t care? I say take off the blinders. Sure, they may not give us everything we want, but they can’t nor should they. It’s not good business sense to make things too easy, or too readily available. There has to be a balance.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

  • mounts
  • add-ons (API’s and unofficial stuff doesn’t count)
  • new classes (they will expand current ones with new weapons, skills etc)
  • race and class change items

Honestly, i doubt new continents will become playable, like Cantha and Elona. The current map is big enough and players are still concentrated only in a few zones and there are a lot of undiscovered region on the visible map. With the current addition of the megaserver feature Anet try to solve this problem, to not make unpopular zones deserted, but the content is still lacking there, no matter how many player they gather there from various servers to make the illusion of a living world.

Once upon a time, in land far far away, there was a game called Guild Wars 1. Not long after the launch of this mysterious game, the necs got together to protest, (in front of Gail the Frog——not that Gail IS a frog—but there was a frog called Gail, which Gail spoke through in LA) in a most friendly manner to have something of the necs changed (soz mind fail cant remember what—-thought it was the armour—-but mite be wrong). And lo it came to pass that it was WAS changed.

My point is (if you have gotten this far) I just can not see the same happening today, for what ever reason, something has been lost. (Possably due to so many player arguments/ counter arguments/ counter to the counter arguments——well—you get the picture)

However, I will put a proviso on that—-it was a one off, and the early days of a new game. There a LOT more people playing now. I find sometimes I look at GW1 through rose tinted spectacles, and forget the nerfs that happened on occasion, and the wailing that took place when that happened, as I suspect others do.

I totally agree. What we have here is the player have the attitude ‘We want this no matter what’ without thinking how it affects the game. A great example was with Rift, after the first 2 weeks of release, Saboteurs were nerfed to oblivion because players whined how OP they were, not figuring out they were glass cannons that could be one shotted. Instead Trion listened to the whine and nerfed them, no one played that profession for a year because you couldn’t.

Interesting perspective. Most of the threads on the forums are asking for AreaNet to add stuff. It’d be fascinating to see our very own development team state what they cannot and will not add to GW2.

I feel that the initial reactions to being told what can’t be done would be negative from the community. However, with the new limitations in mind, suggestions for future content could be more in-line with that the developers can do.

I have seen this attempted by other games. It never seemed to have any impact at all other than people ignoring it and demanding that things that have been excluded from being put in be put in.

Really? If you don’t mind my asking, which other games? I’ve just never heard of this sort of thing being done before.

The most detailed list of things they would not add was done by Runescape years ago (I have not played in about 10 years so may have changed since). It was completely ignored by forum users. Other games generally fall back on ‘we don’t have the resources for that.’ which is a round about way of saying we have no way to implement what you want.

It is not negative but was PLAINLY SPOKEN by the developers in the past and why should they repeat themselves. If people can’t understand that, then what else are we supposed to do?

An example, some people keep whining about is mounts. But we don’t need them in a game with waypoints and Asuran Portal system and speed boosts that professions have. What would mounts gain us over that? No one has given any good reasons other than ‘It would be cool’ or ‘I want them, that is why’. Those are not reasons.

I know I can give plenty of good reasons why they shouldn’t be in the game but that is for the mount thread. The point being, when you give people definitive reason why it can’t be done (Lore, design, etc.) but they still whine about it, how can you not be negative?

According to the threads that seem to pop up every week, my list of what i DON’T want :

-Mounts
-Capes
-Holy Trinity
-Instanced raids (especially with exclusive raid-gear)

also
-level-cap increase
-next tier of item progression

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

Unfortunately Capes were in GW1. That could be done although the guild backpacks and armor makes it unlikely.

" Make mine gw2"

Thanks for your contribution :o

Even though CoH alone was technically profitable, the studio running it was performing very poorly. NCsoft made numerous attempts to transition it to other studios but could never could broker a deal that would sort the whole mess out. CoH died from mismanagement outside of NCsoft’s control for the most part. Paragon Studios is who you should be sour on, I really doubt anyone at NCsoft was happy to be in such a jam that they had to close a popular title.
