Content is content even if it is no longer available.

Content isn’t anything if it doesn’t even exist anymore.

No content is content if people play it. Doesn’t matter if it’s not around anymore.

City of Heroes is so much better now that you can’t play it.

Back in the day, City of Heroes eventually handled major zone changes by having instances with old content under the rational of time travel. But CoH was a heavily instanced game. GW2 simply isn’t. Plus it’s zones were much smaller so it didn’t overly bloat the game files.

Actually, the size of many of CoH ‘s zones might have been comparable to those of GW2. They might have felt smaller because of the travel powers you could unlock at a certain point, and not as detailed as those of GW2 because systems back when CoH launched didn’t have the oomph that modern systems do.

I never diminished the Feature Pack. Great things came from it that were needed, however the patch was all Features. I simply mean it would be nice to hear from them at some point when we can expect more content. Maybe it’s just me, but i would like to put the feature to use with more content.

Been wondering this myself. I talked with a friend of mine about this yesterday and it feels as though there hasn’t been an actual update (in terms of new content) for months.

Sure there’s been WvW, but in reality, all that’s been done is attach some achievement points to things we’ve already done in the past in WvW, but just so happen to gain those achievement points when the WvW meta went live.

And the feature patch? Let’s just say those things should have been implemented from day 1 – so I don’t really consider it an update.

Where’s the actual NEW content, like Living Stories? or are they all just taking a very long vacation? >_<

I did read these posts and I have read others in the past. These posts are meant to be read as, “this is what we are working on.” Though some of what was published wasn’t implemented a lot of it was. Also since then they have revised their statements and such their “state of the game” posts have been better.

Prior to the Feature Patch around the end of the Season One LS, Colin and few others stated that their would be a “state of the game” article shortly after the Feature Patch and LS One.

In all fairness, by this very logic, a game you missed out on and cannot obtain again isn’t a game. A book that has fallen out of print before you could obtain a copy is not a book. A TV show that no channel can be bothered to rerun is not a TV show (this would absolutely kill soap operas).

If they built the Eiffel Tower, let it stand there for two weeks, and then knocked it down permanently, then maybe I’d agree with your argument.

Comparing ANet’s Living Story to the actual living story of real life is simply ridiculous and illogical. “Oh, I never met Abraham Lincoln before he died so therefore he’s not a real person!”.

Nevertheless, temporary content is not real content; it’s a cheap, shallow alternative, and it happens to only be active for two weeks. Yes, I can play it while it’s active… And then it’s gone. Video game content is by its very definition stuff that you can experience in said game.

If my favorite series stops airing, I can always watch it online. If a book I want to read isn’t in print anymore, there are always libraries. However, even if I wanted to relive my Scarlet experience for old times sake (and I don’t), there’s absolutely no way for me to go about doing so.

We need permanent updates with actual substance that can add some depth and variety to this game that has grown stagnant and dull.

Temporary content is not real content

It’s content, whether you witnessed or played it or not. There is no “real” or “not real” in this. It was created, therefore it is content.

If my favorite series stops airing, I can always watch it online.

Not if your on-demand service of choice can’t get the rights to it, or if your favourite torrents get taken down.

If a book I want to read isn’t in print anymore, there are always libraries.

Not if that library can’t get a copy.

For all you commentators out there getting tangled up in the “is it or isnt it content” I think some are missing the point many are making.

Is LS content? yes it is content, however its primarily temporary content. What many of us are saying is we want more permanent content. Also like others have stated Temporary content “WAS” content and it isn’t anymore. Once content is removed to classify it as content in the present tense makes no sense at all.

Also before anyone beats me to it, yes I know more and more content is becoming permanent. Once Season 2 story launches I and many others hope for 90% permanent content. They have stated that they are changing it up for story season 2, so I would hope they would concentrate on the number one requested topic, that being permanent content

I would agree with this statement if we had more things to do. I understand they need time in between stories, however this is the mistake they made by having temporary content when they take breaks the the game itself “reverts” lack of a better word and we’re left with to be desired for content.

Also don’t miss-interpret my statement as this game doesn’t have a variety of things to do, because it does. What I mean is newer “permanent” things to do.

this is why it looks like they need to do an expansion. Southsun cove feels fairly half baked. The theme was weak, the charachters were bleh. The other launch areas are generally way better though out, with way better dynamic events/lore/experiences. So yeah they need some release level content, the type of thing you generally find in an expansion.

Its been two years, and their focus hasnt changed from reworking/refining the old world. Thats all good for new players, but they need more for all the people who have been here more than 5 months.

In any case I am tired of this stupid and pointless debate, the only thing that bugs me is what Persica and me stated a couple of posts back, being secretive and all mysterious over the future of your friggin game is not the way you should run your buisiness. Let your players know what is coming for them hell every mmo I played at least talked about upcoming things. I never said I didn’t love this game or that I didn’t support Anet in any way, the only thing I at least deserve after 2 years is to know if I am waiting for something in a very close future or if I can play something else because it won’t be before a couple of years.

Not really. Something which once existed but no longer does is best described with the verb, “was,” or, “were,” rather than, “is,” or, “are.”

Aspects of the LS were content. They no longer are. “Content,” is something that is currently contained by the container. GW2 is the container but it no longer contains certain things and so those things are no longer among its content.

The Eiffel Tower, “is,” currently in existence.
A TV show that no longer exists, “was,” a TV show, but no longer, “is.”
A book that no longer exists, “was,” a book, but no longer, “is.”
A game that no longer exists, “was,” a game.

So im the only one that would like a, “state of the game” update? I find it humourous that some think im asking for this monumental thing, lol

In other mmos people have to wait 6 months to a year before new content is being released. Here people freak out when they go 2 weeks without new content/features.

If compare it like that we didn’t get any new content ever.
So we wait for over 2 years now………….

I am sure people are patient……… they just want a freaking word

That seems like a reasonable question, even if ANet might not be able to answer it anytime soon.

The real problem is the lack of game changer features/content.

PvE: new dungeons, new maps, housing and so on
PvP: new GAME MODES

All the game: new skills, new class, new weapons, GREAT bug fix and BALLANCE.

This is the same game that i have bought 2 years ago, with a new WvW map and the fractals. No new other game changer at all. Don’t misunderstand me, the game is nice, but the fun is diminishing. I need some fresh air, some new thing to do, this new feature patch was nothing so great: 5 new useless traits and a little change to runes and sigils (old things).

Is in the human nature the need of new things to do don’t let the players search it in a new game.

Well first of all you got to realize its a bit different, GW2 is a service, its like a premium channel on cable. Basically what people are saying is, You really should stop showing reruns, because starting to lose interest.

Now Im sure you ll say living story is new episodes, but compared to the new seasons of other MMOs, and GW1 in the past (expansions) it simply doesnt compare well at all. Mostly what we have been getting in GW2 is the equivalent of new DVDs with bonus featurettes, that has been remastered.

Basically they want them to make some sequels, and people are assuming the sequels wont suck.

I mean they can do whatever they want, maybe this is how their business model works, but personally, though i in general like GW2, there is nothing to do. I fully understand that users can consume content faster than they can make it, but game will be two years old by the end of summer. It really needs to at least start planning some big things
like new fully fleshed out maps
new dynamic event chains/plotlines
new overarching plotline
expansion of charachter abilities
new proffesions
new dungeons (really new)

am i asking too much?

nah this is usually the type of things you see in expansions.
if they can deliver it with living story, fine, but to this date, Living story season one was not really a great showcase of potential.

Something else, while i think the base world has not been expanded on enough, i think living story could actually have worked, if it was overall pretty good. They just dont have the type of people you need/skill sets to handle serialized content that well. It hasnt been tried too often by a Video game company, its probably hard to amass all the talent that would require.

You need really good serial style writers, content developers with good depth, and a short turn around. Editors/directors with a strong overall vision. excellent level/game designers.

I can understand that, but if Anet was to announce, for example, “Elona will come by August”, people will begin to create topics about what will be inserted or not, then they will cry for not having new information every day, then when Anet will announce something they will threaten to quit to game since it is not what they were expecting…

I’m also eager to know if something huge is coming or not, but instead of planning my gaming time on something that might be coming, I prefer to focus on what we have now.

People were thrilled the feature pack was announced, and not even two weeks after they want more.

Whatever Anet’s reaction will be, the forum will be filled with complaints. Anet is very active towards its community, yet they have plenty of work to do. They won’t flood twitter with each idea they (plan to) develop.

If people can’t wait a month or so to get some new information, I wonder how they can play the game: do they get every legendary weapon, complete the maps, and unlock everything in less than two weeks? I think not. If they can wait to get something in-game, they can wait a couple of days for an announcement.

I think the problem is people believe they have the right to consume “content” when they want and not when the creators/distributors want. DVRs, streaming, torrents, etc. have unshackled the requirement of watching a show “Tuesday’s at 8p” or in our case LS content while it’s released.

That model of consuming TV content: it’s going to die (or contract massively), because streaming services, boxsets – hell, even rewind it back to the VHS – are all BETTER ways of consuming content for the audience. The reason why TV shows had time slots was because broadcast time was finite, so everyone had to watch at the broadcaster’s convenience.

If this is really what it’s meant to be like, then excuse me while I go watch a different TV show play a different game.

people basically want to know if they should expect some meaty content additions soon or not soon. If people know nothing major is coming for a year, they can just retire the game for awhile. Maybe come back later. They really just want to know if they shoudl keep gw on their radar or just drop it.

People were thrilled the feature pack was announced…

I wouldn’t use the word “thrilled” to describe people’s reaction to the feature patch. It’s generated the largest volume of complaints since the ascended gear introduction.

Anet have said their focus at the moment is on getting the game released in China, but once that’s out the way they’re going to be focusing on Season 2 of the Living Story.

Which probably means there are already people working on Season 2. I can’t imagine artists, story writers etc. have much to do towards the release in China so they’re probably working on new content already, the way Anet normally have different teams working on different things all at the same time.

Obviously I don’t know when they’re going to announce (or release) something but I seriously doubt it’s the case that they only just started working on it after the feature pack was released.

Yeah but it’s also the most changes the game has had at once since ascended came along. You can’t really compare the feature patch to living story updates with one or two feature changes.

Also I think a lot of the complaints are just about it being new and different. There were a lot of complaints when they changed dailies and added laurels too, everything from “we’re forced to grind dodging” to there being too many dailies to choose from.

But a few months later comments were largely positive, the main complaints were not having enough things to spend laurels on and later the fact that they skewed the leaderboards.

I think a lot of people are just thrown by how inconsistent gw2 has been with things. We go from ideas like no vertical progression to the introduction of ascended. From periodic updates to bi weekly, then back to periodic. From no information to weekly previews then back to no information. And that’s just a few quick examples. For anyone who does not know to check multiple sources (forums, twitter, youtube ect.) you really have no way of knowing half of whats going on.

As a person back from a long break, I was surprised to see so little having been added since I left.
In fact, the word “shocked” may be a better fit.

I played in all the betas, and content wise; well, complaints that were in beta are still present now… I suppose that’s one thing that shocked me.

I consider Armor (drops) to be a minor form of content. We all know the type, we kill a certain type of mob and it drops something theme’d for that area it’s in. – In beta complaints for area diversity/race diversity drops were requested constantly… and that’s still lacking.

I also skipped the LS for the most part. I think I caught the first bit of it, didn’t like that I had to log into my main to do it as I was working on an alt at the time. And as that was at the time the “new content” and I knew it was temp, I didn’t want to miss it. I quit because of it – no rage quit, just a “Meh, this is silly.”

Now that I’m back for awhile, I see only a few areas have even been changed, and maybe I’ve seen a few new DEs (or maybe I just don’t recall them from before).

Southshore, or whatever the name of that isle is, takes the worst gameplay elements of Orr and the Risen and magnifies it (IMO). I hated Orr with the constant Zombies on speed and constantly annoying CCs. Orr wasn’t difficult, it was annoying (and in fact, this was a constant complaint at launch too – I thought by now they would have addressed it). The Karka are Risen in new skins… so the entire area is another place I avoid simply because “sighing” my way through a game isn’t exactly what I call enjoying it.

Seeing LA was kinda neat. The wreckage in Kessek (sp?) was also pretty cool. The new hub north of LA in the Vigil HQ was a nice touch, as is seeing various remnants of the LS strewn about still. But, it’s not there to be played now so it’s kind of just there…*

To be fair though, I did not follow GW2 after I left. I un-followed them on all social media and it was only through a friend that I learned of the Feature Patch. So I thought I would run another character through and see how the game had changed.
I had hoped to see new zones, new Hearts and new DEs along with new armor and weapon drops to spice things up. So going in this time I had perhaps higher than fair expectations. My bad.

As always, this is simply my opinion.

*I would have liked to see the LS be a story line added post Zhaitan Defeat. That way, at my leisure I could work through the story lines with each character. That to me, would be a solid amount of new content that I could do again and again.
