Why would they add more content if when they add it people don’t play it (TA Aether) and many others seem happy doing the same thing over and over (Queensdale Champ train), it’s easier for them to focus on the gemstore plus people keep buying things so they don’t have a real problem, people who want new content (a minority) have it.

I would like new content too, but if we don’t vote with our wallets they won’t do a kitten.

I did vote with my wallet. Did buy a collectors edition to show.. here that’s what we want. And then did not buy a single gem showing ’ this is what I don’t want’.

Sadly enough there for now seem to be many people buying gems and so support the downfall of this game. You want expansions? Buy no gems.

Hekdragoon is correct.

It’s the reward or progression system. Which isn’t there in GW2.

Other games just give you better stats gear for new dungeon, or give more rewards for higher tier dungeon.

That dont’ happen in GW2, even if they make new dungeon more rewarding, people will just buy it from path seller anyway.

It’s the way the reward system is design. Which probably isn’t easy to change because of the overall GW2 design.

Now, the cost for these things is different. Factions cost what, $60? And GW2 is technically free forever.

To be honest, I wouldn’t mind paying for an expansion… If it’s worth it!

-If we get the same amount of content as in Factions, it’s ok to pay $60.
-If it’s to get the same amount of content as GW2 on launch (or just some new zones as they don’t seem to want to open new continents yet), $30 will be more than enough.

But again, 28 days left before the end of WvW S2 and North America LT. Maybe they’ll announce something that will make out impatience explode, or they will lose some bored players if nothing considerable is planned… :/

There is always something to wait for. After those 28 days you might wait for the first LS S2 patch. And we will be getting new stuff. A few maps for sure. But the question is what you want overall. Just expansions to work towards or waiting for the next patch.

Personally I noticed that I enjoy this game the most in the LS breaks.
First break was with SAB 1 (what was not really a LS patch) and I had then lots of fun. That’s maybe not 100% fear because SAB was just fun so lets forget that break. Second break was when they updated Tequatl and so on. It was at the same time as SAB 2. The 3th break was before the last few LS patches. There was not much to do but it felt oke and now there is a break. Again still not much to do but I have fun, log in do a JP, maybe level a level and log out. I miss content like hunting down mini’s but overall it’s ok.

However when there are LS patches you feel you have to complete that stuff because else you miss out on it. I already reduced the ‘have to’ for myself to only getting the items I might really want but still there is some form of pressure and as soon as you ‘have’ (or feel you have to do because of time-pressure) to do something it’s not fun any-more.

So personally I am loot looking towards possible upcoming patches. The longer it takes for LS patches to start rolling in again, the better. I do look forward to an expansions but you can wonder if they will ever come now they use the cash-shop to generate income.

China literally just launched, we will not see an expansion for at least another year. LS in a few months. China’s launch is the focus right now, everything else is secondary.

A simple guess would be LS season 2 in about a month. Perhaps a smaller patch before then.

How much developer work does it take to make an existing game be opened up to more people. How much more is it just language translation and such logistics?

The thing is at the release and before Anet assured us they had quite a variety of developer teams working on different areas of the game so that we could have lots of content coming out. The impression I got was they had a team working on festival type content, a team on Living Story, a team working on substantial permanent expansion like content and a team on gameplay development and other features. Then a while back I heard that they payed off people and now there has been no actual story, exploration, zone, content since the beginning of March I believe (that last piece of cinematic and content in the Dead End Bar was so very minimal as to be not worthy of counting).

Over an above this there is currently an ignorant, stubborn silence that to me just holds the current players in contempt because Anet have been keeping us informed well up until now and suddenly all quiet.

I use forums to give my opinions but I mostly avoid discussing over
them due to those less than polite individuals out there and their offensive attitude.

Anet has already commented on upcoming content. They’ve been busy with China and they’ll tell us about new content when they have something solid to tell. They’re probably working on stuff but it might still be rough with a lot of undecided details. Some dev teams will tell the players any old thing and feel OK taking it back the next day and some dev teams want to be sure what they say is what will be. Guess which Anet is. ^^

Anet have been both in the past and its not about making empty promises to keep us happy or waiting until something solid its about Anet going from a company that kept communicating with us in blogs givingus hope of good interesting things to come, to complete silence whislt at the same time no new content released but a feature pack, a lot of which was about megaserver rollout, otherwise server merger.

The fact that China basically don’t allow depiction of dead stuff and such means they more or less needs to redo the whole Necromancer class (I seems to recall it is being renamed Summoner in China) including much of the personal story and Orr, which involves quite a bit of undead. So yeah, it is a rather large amount of stuff to do.

If you’ve played WoW since the game first came out (and only have one account) you’re guaranteed to be in the hole ~$2000. I’m quite alright with my $60 game that has cost me roughly $.05/hr to play (at 1200hrs play time) and still find entertaining.

I was just curious because quite a few people are saying things like “the living story provides expansion quality content for free”. I just wanted to make sure you recognized that GW2’s living story is worth exactly what you paid for it…very little to nothing. If you’re willing to accept that, fine. I guess some people were hoping (largely because ANet said so) that Living Story content would be high quality and akin to a paid expansion.

Personally I was hoping they would sell expansions.. sooner then other games because they advertised the game a B2P (and there name with using a good B2P model for GW1) so I figured they needed to make money with expansion sales.

However they went for the cash-shop focus (like any F2P game out there), what totally fits the LS but does not fit the expansions (ant it’s content) many people would like to have.

Look at how much content you got over the previous months (yes the temporary content) that kept you busy playing. Something new and fresh to do every 2 weeks while in an “expansion” system you would have to wait and wait for something new to come out.

The LS system has its own benefits, especially an LS system that is updated as quickly as the system in Guild Wars 2, and the main benefit is keeping current/active players busy with something new, something expansions are very bad at providing. After the first few weeks after an expansion is released, everyone either returns to their previous farming spot, they get some new farming spots, or combine the two, the rest of the expansion content is nearly abandoned, as much as the content of the main game after some weeks pass.

With the LS you don’t have that, as you get something new on each release. The main problem with the LS system of course is that players who stopped playing will return and find very few new things.

A mix of LS and expansion content would be the best of both worlds. OR a way to somehow replay some of the LS content at a later time, much like any famous TV show, once the episode passes you can’t rewatch it whenver you like, however most good shows always get broatcasted again at a later time.

Let’s just hope that the chinese publisher will be able to do the localisation on his own in the future. Otherwise one might think that definitely certain content will be out of the question (in terms of being … more complicated), like the aforementioned un-dead theme, in the future.

Yeah after having seen the LS I would prefer the expansion way by far. In fact I look up to the upcoming LS. All the temporary stuff you might feel you need to do because else you miss out on it. Then it’s not fun anymore.

You may be right. My own feeling is that, like the original poster, I’d just like an update of SOME sort from Anet. What’s coming when would be top; the same in more vague terms would still be nice – but even a “We’re still working on it; we’ll get back to you around ((insert timescale here))” would be OK. I don’t even have a problem with being told they’re looking for the China release to bed in first, and there’s nothing coming down the line for some (approximate) time. I’d just like an idea as to where we all stand.

I agree that it’s more then time for anet to tell us what their plans are for this game as far as PERMANENT content goes.
The game is almost 2 years old, so let’s summarize what PERMANENT stuff we got:

  • pvp: glory got replaced with the new reward tracks to more easily get dungeon skins. (meanwhile it seems that you aren’t able to get several of the pvp-only skins anymore)
  • wvw: wxp
  • pve: fractals, 1 new dungeon path (in TA), a few jumping puzzles, LA got removed (and the functionality of having crafting/bank/black lion close together got put behind a paywall that was expansive and available for short time only), every gold income (besides gemstore) got nerfed, gemstore featuring (temporarily available) stuff that is almost identical to already existing armor in the game, new trait system (that needs some serious changes as already mentioned in another trait), 2 whole new healing (with 1 of them being only being somewhat useful in 1 specific living story instance)

So after 2 years (and with anet telling us at the start that they had several teams working on several different parts of the game) we still have no idea even IF anet is even thinking of bringing us new classes/zones/more personal story/etc…
wvw still hasn’t been really touched at all (and it can use some serious fixing).
And some basic functions that should have been in game since launch are still missing (for example: trading post is still missing a decent filter/search function. You still can’t easily specify how many items you want to send to friend (it’s either the full stack or nothing at all and you really say something like, here is 250 food items, use 1 and send the rest back to me please)

At this point I don’t want to level an alt, because I already saw the whole world… several times. I don’t like pvp all that much and wvw is getting boring (it’s always the exact same thing in the exact same landscape: find the zerg from your server and attack the first gate you see, but don’t bother defending stuff (not rewarding), and enemy zergs will kill you if you are not in a zerg yourself).

Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t expect all those changes by tomorrow, but I DO expect an newspost about what PERMANENT content anet has in store for us. They had almost 2 years to create it, so they could at least create an announcement with several hints and they all better be worth it!
Living story can be fun at times (for example: sanctum sprint was a lot of fun, why didn’t we get a full zone like that?) but it doesn’t even come close to replace a real expansion, when none of it’s content can be played again whenever the user wants to.

And yes they might have been working on the china release, but that doesn’t mean that 1 person couldn’t have found 1 hour time to post a newsarticle about the future of GW2.

First off It’s not asking a lot to receive one to three paragraphs on whats to come over the next few months. The amount of time required to perform this task is next to none compared to the amount of time and resources it takes to develop and implement said content.

Secondly there’s people who are employed at Anet where that’s one of the primary duties.

Living Story did not fail.

It depends on how you define “fail” if you classify LS content as being permanent content than Season 1 did in fact fail to satisfy lots of players; therefore the lack of permanent content to many means LS Season failed.

Another interesting fact to think about is the creation of CDI threads spawned after extreme player feedback in the many flaws the LS Story had. I’m not here to say that LS Season 1 was all flaws cause there were some interesting ideas and implementations; but just realize had they have not started to communicate and “listen” for the lack of a better word we would be in a even worse spot. Anet knew LS Season 1 was not garnering as much praise as they thought it would hence the CDI threads and executive decision changes.

This game has had hardly any new permanent content for almost two years now. The devs lost their track, I guess, after the failure that living story turned out to be.

Living Story did not fail.

If anything, it got mixed reviews which shows that it has promise but wasn’t quite what people expected. They can certainly improve on it and their talk about Season 2 suggests that’s what they intend to do.

@NathanH

you forgot to mention quite a lot of things like:

4 new PVP maps,
pvp tournaments
pvp arenas
spectator mode
pvp dailies
traps in wvw
new conditions
reward revamp
EOTM
quite a bunch of new dynamic events
a couple of mini dungeons
bunch of new skins
quite a bunch of guild missions
wallet
a truckload of new crafting recipes
quite a few new materials
new world bosses
revamped world boss
revamped dungeons
a couple of new instances
a couple of new maps
2 revamped zones
a bunch of new mini games
a couple of world events (invasions / toxic alliance)
reward revamps
MF revamp
new runes
LFG
new utilities / consumables
and I am sure I missed some stuff

sure a lot of content was temporary but a lot of it was permanent as well.

And I dont want this to be taken the wrong way but I think it needs to be said. A lot of people claim temporary content doesnt count, only permanent content does. Yet when ever people who feel that way list what permanent content Anet release since release the list ranges from absolutely nothing at all to a miniscule fraction of what was actually released.

If permanent content was so crucial how would this be explained? Truth is temporary or not once content is consumed its generally forgotten. Just ask yourselves how many times do you reroll and alt just to play a specific quest again in any other mmo? how many times do you reroll an alt to experience a dungeon that’s not part of the current end game in any other mmo?

NathanH said “At this point I don’t want to level an alt, because I already saw the whole world” so I ask you this, if all of the living story was permanent content what different would it make? would you level a new alt to experience it again or would you still feel not like it cause you already saw it all?

I’m not arguing there wasn’t permanent content. What I and many are arguing is that the ratio to Temporary / Permanent content is unbalanced.

I would surmise the ration to be like 30% / 70% with 30% being Permanent. The correct ratio would be 90% / 10% with 90% being Permanent.

Look up what WoW added between release and the first expansion. Just google it. There is a wiki.

Compare it to GW2, than you might understand why people are upset.

Look up how much you had to pay to play WoW between release and the first expansion, and you’ll understand why you shouldn’t be upset.

Answer: not very much content between WoW launch and TBC launch. Grinding the same small pool of content for ridiculous numbers of hours doesn’t make the small pool of content any bigger.
Blizzard is brilliant in their use of the skinner box, and their ability to extend their content pool’s life-cycle. That doesn’t mean there’s actually all that much content there though.
I got curious at one time and decided to go point for point comparing what content was released in GW2’s LS to what content was released in Cataclysm over the same time span(making sure major WoW patches where included in the time span. Picked cata because that’s when I quit). They released a very comparable amount of content, WoW’s content was just heavily gated and forced a lot of grind, making it appear like more.
There’s nothing inherently wrong with that, and it’s clearly well managed by Blizzard, but let’s not pretend there’s more there then what there actually is.

We could discuss content quality as well, but that will just devolve into subjective moaning. My presence here should answer the question of what I think of the quality though.

ANet decided that the world of Tyria is dynamic. Stuff happens and then it’s over. There may be stuff left over but the events that led to the creation of that stuff is now in the past. I just don’t understand why players can’t grasp that and accept it’s gone.

It’s like your first kiss or holding your first born for the very first time. The event is ephemeral, you can never every relive it.

We are heroes. This is what we do!

‘You still can’t easily specify how many items you want to send to friend (it’s either the full stack or nothing at all and you really say something like, here is 250 food items, use 1 and send the rest back to me please)’

Have you considered splitting your stacks of items and just sending one…or whatever amount you so desire? It is easily accomplished with Alt.

So you’re saying that GW2 will always have inferior content delivery because of its B2P/gem store business model?

Look at how much content you got over the previous months (yes the temporary content) that kept you busy playing.

The content I got that kept me busy playing was absolute nil. I don’t find the living story content engaging in the least and have stopped playing it.

Oow we grasp that. The problem is that the playable content should be linked to the stuff that is left behind after the event, not to the event itself that will be gone.

We all live in a dynamic world. At some day they might start building a swimming-pool in the area. That is an ‘event’, I see them deciding to build it, I see them building it and so I see the world change but I don’t participate in it, there is no reward for me. Then when it’s there I can go there to swim, learn stuff do stuff for years to come. If that is what I like to do.

Thats how the LS should have been. An event that you see happen and then what is left because of it, that new content has achievements, rewards and so on linked to it and can be done pretty much forever.

(You could argue you would then have less influence in it but we all know we have no influence it it anyway. We have been fighting Scarlet for over a year but if the developers decide LA would be destroyed that is what is going to happen.)

If that was the case people would be complaining far less about the LS itself. I still would prefer expansions, simply because they could then generate income with expansions in stead of with the cash-shop so we could see many of the items now related to the cash-shop be put ingame. (mini’s, barber and so on). But I would then be more happy with the LS. Having temporary available achievements and rewards is just not fun because it’s all an ‘do it now or miss out on it forever’.

I think eventually they will end up doing both. In regards to achievements and the LS they can still have LS be dynamic and permanent. Similar to fractals, most of if not all of those events happened in the past. They could do something similar at the end of the patch, where you click on an NPC that has the previous stuff and you could play through it; just an idea.

The point I’m making is there are many ways to keep the content permanent and dynamic at the same time.

Even if it kills me to say so, I’d prefer to wait till the game’s 2 years before any update if it means quality. A real story for example, something interesting to do, not “kill undead, rinse, repeat” or “spam 1 to kill the legendary boss in a new event”…

I guess most of you wouldn’t mind if at least ANet gave us a teaser, a statement to speculate about, etc. We can all understand that they are busy with the Chinese release, yet we have nothing to wait for… The only thing that keeps my hopes up high is private email with Ree Soesbee where I questionned her about Sea of Sorrows, and she said, regarding Livia (and therefore Shining Blade, White Mantle, blah blah), that all spoilers she was allowed to give was already in SoS. I assume that we will indeed someday find Livia and the White Mantle as stated in-game.

Also, she stated that they had ideas for stories in Elona, but she couldn’t say how they were going to touch on those lands. Also, when I asked about “a new profession on an hypothetical new continent”, she stated bluntly “can’t answer that”.

Maybe it’s a red herring, maybe it’s a hint that something huge will come: after all, she is in charge of the backstory of the game… So yeah, I still (manage to) have faith in the developers, and I’m eagerly waiting for an announcement, even if it has me wait a couple more months, as long as it’s worth the wait…

Isnt that exactly what they did?
lost shore release left dynamic events related to the discovery of southsun
the secret of southsun had the refugees and canach steer up the karka and we’re left with new dynamic events related to that
sky pirates had the aether blades settle in two complexes on of which is left behind a jp and the other became a fractal
Queen jubilee left behind the pavilion (granted nothing is going on there but they did say the plan to reuse it for future content)
clockwork chaos had scarlet jump start the clockwork invasions which kept on happening after the event
Teqault rising and TA were both permanent events so their changes remain
The tower of nightmare saga had the toxic alliance formation and they still persist and attach not to mention the corruption they brought to kessex hills resulted in new dynamic events that remain to this day

Thats not counting the cosmetic changes such as new maps like cragstead and the hatchery or the redesign of Southsun, kessex hills and LA

Going with your swimming pool analogy, the LS itself was us building the swimming pool but once complete we cannot go back and rebuild the swimming pool because for once we have one of the very few mmos that has a meaningful passage of time unlike most MMOs where the world would always be in a state where the swimming pool hasnt been build (as in you never see the swimming pool build) you’re just told that the swimming pool was built but visually nothing really changes. In Gw2 you build the swimming pool see it happening while its happening and once complete the swimming pool is there and future content might also build up on it.
