Why aren't Dyes account wide?
The one good thing is that once you unlock a bunch of dyes on one character you pretty much have a good idea of which ones you would want for another and you can just pick up a couple on the auction house. There are a few dyes that act differently depending on the material applied to though. Oil slick ( a metallic dye) looks completely different and great (IMO) on leather.
Because anet wants you to buy dye packs using gems that you bought with real money.
End of discussion.
Its because Christine Cox is greedy, and ANet is falling for her greedy views on cash shops. I don’t really trust her.
Obviously it was changed in a lame attempt to get more people to buy gems.
There is no other logical explanation
People need to stop blaming Anet, its NCsoft that is causing problems they are like the kitten of the gaming industry…. no one likes them lol.
I do blame them for even being part of NCsoft though such a bad choice.
Because Chrystin Cox, Monetization Producer, person in charge of the gem store, and former employee of Nexon, made it that way. When Nexon acquired 15% of NCSofts stock and became a majority share holder, they put Mrs. Cox in charge of the GW2 gem store to protect their investment.
A couple weeks later, certain aspects of the game start changing, and not for the better. Mrs. Cox first announcement was to change the way dyes worked. They would no longer be unlocked across all characters on your account, but rather on individual characters. Furthermore, dyes were now soulbound. Unidentified dyes were still tradeable, but once you identified a dye, the dye was soulbound. At the exact same time this announcement was made, dye packs showed up in the gem store.
There was a massive backlash, and eventually Mrs. Cox caved in and compromised and allowed unidentified dyes to be tradeable. Later ANet “accidentally” increased the drop rate of unidentified dyes in an attempt to justify nerfing the drop rate to even lower than what it used to be.
Does anyone even buy dye packs? I’m curious as to whether this strategy worked or if its just making the game that much more unappealing.
Here’s the answere, 7 posts in people. It wont change.
They said they were originally going to be account wide. Anet is fickle like that.

Technically, she was employed by ANet long before Nexon bought NCSoft shares really.

Character bound dyes makes me a lot less keen on collecting every dye in the game. I may still do that on my main but, I mean… come on anet, throw us a bone! — If I go out and spend 20g on a single dye, it would be nice to be able to use it on my alts too…

In all of my time MMOing, I’ve never seen the population of a game come to dislike a single person more. She’s been blamed for everything from the WoW cloning of this game with introduction of the ascended gear treadmill to the reason dye drop rates are total crap. The Nov 15th patch, this game’s version of the Star Wars Galaxies NGE patch, could be renamed the “Cox Patch” and I doubt many here would bat an eyelash :-P
Either she is the worst human being to ever attempt to put their hands in the MMO cookie jar, or she just has some really bad luck. =D

It appears that she’s hit the DR limit for compassion; perhaps she should unequip her MF (Money Find) gear. Or perhaps she just ‘Perceives’ the loss of love here, and everything is really Working As Intended…
I’m fairly new to the game so this topic has probably been brought up before, but what is the logic for dyes not being account wide? Like many new players, I made a character I wasn’t that thrilled with so I started working on an alt. Shock and bewilder when I discover all those dyes I used aren’t available on my alt?!
Is this something that could change in the future?
The dye system has been changed several times before release (well, you know, ANet loves to iterate). In the initial concept they were account wide, as has been posted by Kristen Perry in a blog post in 2010. Also, in the first beta, dyes did not drop as “bottle”, they were grown from seeds in your home instance. Growing seeds would take 24 hours (IRL), but you could speed up this process by buying an item from the cash shop.
At time of the second beta, they changed how dyes were acquired. They now were dropping directly as unidentified dyes, they unlocked colors for a single character only, and they were non-tradeable (account bound, IIRC). This means you could not even get rid of excess dyes on your account. Naturally, this led to an outcry in the community, so they changed the dyes to be tradeable.
Also, while dyes are still unlocked on a per character basis, they introduced actually many ways to obtain dyes in the game: the drop regularly in PvE, if you are a cook you can craft them, you can gamble for dyes in the Mystic Forge, and otherwise you can buy (and sell) dyes at the trading post. And in case this is still not enough, you can also buy dye packs in the cash shop.
As much as I complained during the second beta (and although I am an altoholic), I found the dye drops to be plenty enough such that I have only bought a single dye pack in the cash shop so far. I find the dye system has proven to be a fair system, and I don’t see Anet changing anything on that front in the near future.
As an aside, please don’t let to the many conspiracy theorists in this thread discourage you. They need to blame Nexon, the cash shop, super-greedy-greedy ANet, or whatever boogie man they chose to crucify on a regular basis to be happy. Maybe some people are also just disappointed that it is about 4 month into the game and they still do not have a collection of all rare dyes yet. This is, of course, is just based on a grave misunderstanding what the word “rare” actually means.

I’d just like to say, amazing post. This is exactly how I feel about the character bound dyes.
That and dyes as progression is fun for me.
I just wanted a AAA MMO with no sub made by ArenaNet. And it’s awesome.”
Topics like this remind me of the good old days when we believed in the Manifesto.
ANet was clearly drunk or tripping when they made that manifesto.
Why? Becaus of publishers. As far as I know no big MMO comapny is run by themself anymore. Be it A-net, Riot Games or Blizzard. All are in the hand of some other compeny. And while the devs might want to give us the best experince we can have and enjoy the game. Those jerks are only looking at the raw money they can press out of the games. For them games are only worth the money the can mack with them.
A-net can’t do much but play along. After all they want there game to be released and so do we. The best each player can do is to not buy the Dye packs or what ever he does not like and show that they dislike it one in a while with a ticket to the support or a post in a thread like this.
Weren’t dyes supposed to be craftable by cooks? I thought I heard that once.

They are.
The recipes are downright obnoxious, though.
How’d that work out for us so far?
Now let’s try some ideas that will really work.

Ah, thanks for the info.
And to the guy who says dye drops “regularly” in PvE: Your definition of “regularly” is certainly different from mine. I regularly get Porous Bones. I rarely get dye. Hell, I get yellows more often than I get dyes, and I hardly ever get yellows!

I’m exactly the same.
Miranda Zero – Ele / Twitch Zero – Mes / Chargrin Soulboom – Engi
Aliera Zero – Guardian / Reaver Zero – Necro

I’ve had some decent luck with dyes, myself.
Just today I got five drops in a starter zone, two of which turned out to be rares.
How’d that work out for us so far?

I’ve gotten 1 yellow and a whole lot of dyes, including a Midnight Fire and an Abyss. Paid for most of my exotics with that Abyss.
Uru Kalach (80-War)/Kalthin Leafletter (80-Rgr)/Kalfun Gai (72-Guardian)
Leader – An Unexpected Kinship (AUK)
I have dyes drop for me on a regular basis. From enemies, and from gathering stuff. The drop rate isn’t huge, but averaging 1 a day for sure. Between my partner and I, I don’t think there’s a day we play that one of us didn’t get a dye. (the guild bank is filling up with unused dyes)
I’ve sold some of my un-ID’ed dyes on the TP, but never once bought any. I turned up a dye pack in a BL-box once (iirc), and ID’ed an Abyss dye (still in my inventory). It’s always a nice “oh” moment when a dye drops.
Due to the fact that I didn’t pay any attention to any GW 2 news before I purchased the game, I was over the moon happy to find out the dyes were reusable. I didn’t have to get one bottle per piece of armour!
Back in GW 1, the one place I seem to get black dyes often, was in pre searing Ascalon, the tutorial area for Prophecies…

Well, they say that you cannot please all of the people all of the time.
At least I would argue that dye drops are frequent enough to keep the trading post prices of dyes fairly low. With only a small number of outliers, they usually cost
- below 1s for common dyes,
- below 10s for uncommon dyes,
- below 1g50s for rare dyes.
Even a player who never farms because because he finds it boring (e.g., myself) can easily acquire enough coin to buy all common/uncommon dyes necessary to give his toon the right look. As for the “gotta catch ’em all” with respect to the rare dyes, I still believe that they are called “rare” for a reason.

^this right here.
My main has a ton of unlocked dye, in part because I was running DEs in Orr durring the ‘oops’ patch that had dye dropping like candy. On my most recent lvl 80, I have a very limited dye selection, but when I kitted her out in exotics, I browsed the TP for the few dyes that were both a) in a price range I was willing to spend, and b) would lend to the look I wanted. I settled on a nice blue rare dye that wasn’t terribly expensive, and mathced in with 1-2 other common / uncommon dyes for accent colors.
Sure, I’d love to get Midnight Ice for my warrior, but I have yet to decide if it’s worth it to me…. If I find it from un-ided dye though, I know where it goes
I remember the excitement in GW1 every time black dye dropped… and the thought was the same: “Score! Now… do I use it, or do I sell it?”
Currently, when in dungeons, I hear excited exclamations from guildmates on vent, every time someone gets dye. The whole group will pause to ask ’what’d you get?’ People enjoy the moment of the find because it’s not being spammed at us, it makes the moment special.
Keep the system like it is, I have too much fun in the current environment… if everyone had everything all the time, where would the excitement of finding things be?
