In game we see that the counterparts to vikings are stereotyped as loving beer. This is something they put a LOT of stress on, they refer to beer and ale all the time.

Other races however don’t have this at all.

Why is Arenanet trying to portray beer and drinking as something stereotypically nordic? I’m pretty sure that every single country in Europe has consumed alcohol since the dawn of time, had their taverns and the same share of drunks. I don’t see alcohol as being something typically nordic.

Forget about just Europe, people in the world all the way to Japan have had the same tradition, this is just silly.

The Queensdale monastery as well as a merchant in the Salma district sells alcohol.

Edit: at least one heart in Ascalon sells wine.

I find it funny when people get upset and defensive about things that aren’t even true. :P

There’s a brewery in the monastery in Queensdale. The brewery is run by a female human. One of the events is called “Drive back the centaurs before they steal the monastery’s ale (11)”, so it’s certainly beer/ale that is being brewed there.

There’s a pretty decently large tavern/bar/thing in the Charr home instance, and there’s another in the Grove.

The only race that I don’t think has a ‘bar’ in it’s city is Rata Sum, and well… I can’t really see Asura’ drinking alcohol quite like the other races probably do.

Your post got me thinking about if I had seen an Asura drink (excessively). It brought me to the “Down the Hatch” personal story instance for Order of Whispers.

One of the skills given for the drinking game are “Drink. Take a swig of Ale”- so we know it’s ale, once again. Each enemy you have to challenge is from a different race, including an Asura called Kiplr The Tippler.

So now we know it’s not just purely about brewing or selling ale/beer, we also know that members of non-norn races also drink beer excessively.

As a Scandinavian I must admit you are perfectly correct. It all boils down to the fact we brew the best Ale.

Except for the Norwegians, they know nothing of beer.

I think that in game it’s made clear that drinking beer is more cliché of the Norn than any other race though, it’s made a lot more prominent for some strange reason.

I break it down into this:

Norn care about their legacy- what other people think about them.

In order for their deeds to be heard about, they must boast to as many norn as they can.

They boast at a moot- a great gathering of other norn.

Feasting and gathering go hand-in-hand, as does alcohol and feasting (which is a tradition not exclusive to nordics.)

Why ale/beer of all possible alcoholic beverages? I’m sure it’s down to the climate of Hoelbrak and the Shiverpeaks and the types of fermentable plants that grow in the region… and this is where comparisons to the real-world could be made.

The Norn have literally nothing better to do, especially if drinking a Dolyak’s weight in beer can be written in their legendary deeds. That and getting mindlessly drunk makes doing crazy, pointless, but ultimately awesome things with a high probability of death a lot easier to stomach.

Skritt drink too. A lot. They brew beer also and I’m pretty sure they aren’t related to Norns, nor are they Nordic.

I personally just find it amazing that Norns could bolster about all this ale they drink all the time as if their proving something by consuming such a watery substance.

There’s a huge assortment of human, norn, and charr merchants that sell ale, whiskey, beer, and wine.
I don’t recall many asura or sylvari that do but I’m sure there are.

the only thing silly is you, in ancient times south of Europe grow grapes and made wine up to Italy and France, above this line is too cold for that so they make beer instead. Or better yet, south can make wine+beer, nord can make only beer :P

That’s the TL;DR version. Inb4, forget today improvements in agriculture and grapes strain that grow now in nordic areas
