Why does raiding feel so unfriendly?
GW1 style Heroes would solve many of the problem with raids.
I really think raids had been done differently. They should have been done as a way to introduce new maps. It could have been done as a front line force moving/raiding into new territory to establish a pact foothold and waypoints. It would have given early access to maps via raids with it’s rewards and later open access to all PvE players as standard maps. After the maps were made part of the open world players could still experience the raids via the hub.
It’s funny how people throw the “elitism” word around, yet they call anything that inconviences them as “elitism”.
What is elitism, here are some examples:
Getting 28k instead of lets say 30k on KC and getting kicked. That’s elitism. And that is usually the only case i see rarely after 2 years of raiding. 2 years of pugging. If anyone with more experience than that disagrees feel free to object. Unfortunately i don’t think most people here have any real experience apart from……escort.
Most people that complaing about elitism are the ones joining lfg groups with specific requirements and then getting kicked because they dont meet these requirements. Then they go to the forums and accuse Anet’s system and the rest of the player for being elitists and toxic, well 200 IQ logic right there.
If this reflects anything, it’s how so people are utterly ignorant, lazy, petty and they don’t care about anything as long as it matches their own playing habits but they throw a tandrum if something is out of their comfort zone (i didnt say non-achievable) and that it as selfish as it gets right there.
I played with a lot of people in this game lots of guilds from raiding/guilds to completely casual open world guilds that do gm’s and maybe a dungeon run once in a while and never, NEVER did anyone mention elitism in this game.
That’s because people are aware of what they want to do in this game, how far they wanna go (casual/hardcore) and they just do it or give it up. Period. It is called “not being a brat” but actually having a sense of self and realize that u arent the center of the world and not everything needs to cater to yourself.
It’s not Anet’s fault if raids seem exclusive/unfriendly, it’s not the system’s fault, it is the player’s own perception of themselves as a player and the game, especially when they talk and make assumptions based on what some1 said and without any actual experience themselves on said content.
Best example is Tekoneiric’s post :clearly zero knowledge about raids, never raided, never will but who cares it is freedom of speech right?
There were also a lot of players who bought the game with the expectation that it would offer content they found challenging. While dungeons did fill that role at first, that did not last long.
Sure, but most of those players left pretty fast, and good riddance. They were corrosive to the culture of the game.
Some of them stayed, despite not getting all they wanted. Some may have come back. You’re labeling them en masse because they want exclusive rewards and you don’t. Both desires are selfish and in conflict. There is no moral superiority in the idea that you have to get every reward you want despite your unwillingness to engage with the content those rewards were designed to be incentives for.
I also happen to believe that the best thing for the game is for players in general to accept that every aspect of the game may not be for them.
And that’s fine. I can get 100% behind that, so long as two conditions are met:
1. Said “not for everyone” content cannot block progression towards earning rewards that “maybe everyone” players might want. Rewards are “for” anyone who wants them.
Good thing all rewards are for all players who choose to pursue them.
Thing is, you want the reward via an alternate pursuit. To this point, ANet still considers PvE to be a single game mode, and that game mode includes anything that isn’t in the sPvP or WvW modes. Whether they’ll bend in that stance I don’t know. I tend to doubt it. It’s a slippery slope. Give in to one group, the next thing they know, someone else will be demanding they give in to their particular brand of unwillingness.

That’s it and it has been like that forever. That kind of toxicity and blind meta-adherence could already be experienced back in dungeons.
The big difference is that you didn’t need to engage with the meta in dungeons, you could avoid the “zerk or nothing” groups entirely and still do the content (albeit slower) because basically any five people can clear a dungeon.
(also, they put the raids masteries in the general HoT section instead of a seperate raid mastery only section, which is really stupid).
Meh. I don’t know whether they’re friendly or unfriendly, but they sure are boring.
I hope it’s the former. There is no point to raids in this game and HoT should have proven that.
As much as I enjoy activities such as raiding in MMORPGs in general, agreed.
Plus, if I wanted to raid, I’d not be playing GW2. Even at its worst, something as old as WoW raids are running circles around how they work in GW2.
Of course, for what I’m paying, the raids I’m getting are amazing. That’s always something to keep in mind.
How is the game design the problem?
Its content designed for organized groups to deal with, not for random strangers. The only problem with Raids as far as design goes is putting them on the LFG to begin with. And of course players not realizing what putting it on the LFG means.
After many years, they added content in the game that is good for guilds and guild teams, groups of friends, and organized players. Something that requires team work and proper role split between the players.
When you can finish all the content by adding a random stranger you’ve never played with, and succeed, what’s the point of having a guild?
I assume the point of having a guild is to socialize.

Sorry, it definitely wasn’t anything good for my guild and my groups of friends. Quite the opposite.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
If i can’t play my class how i want to, and am to be expected to play a dumb internet build.. thats a easy and simple .. okay bye .
Good thing i don’t care about legy weapons or armour.. its simply not worth all the gold-materials and effort. And like PzTnT said *The elitism in this game makes the raids (and some other team stuff) extremely unpleasant and it really is the worst I’ve seen in any of the MMOs I’ve played.
I agree and this is a fact.
Lol, “The elitism in this game makes the raids (and some other team stuff) extremely unpleasant and it really is the worst I’ve seen in any of the MMOs I’ve played.”
You must never played any mmo before, the elitism in this game is not even top 50, this is one of the most friendly mmo. Seriously if you think that, try other games. And no that is not fact, it’s your opinion and a terribly inaccurate one at that.
Uhuh, i knew there would come along a defender of the GW2 realm, i played a fair amount of mmo’s from 2006 onwards, so i do have some comparison to make.
Getting into raiding is sometimes just plain hostile, cuz the pro’s wouldn’t want you to waste their precious time playing a build thats is not from the internet.

And why is that an issue with those “pros”? Either use the appropriate build or find a group of people willing to use your type of builds and raid with them. The choice is still yours.
Being someone who hasn’t raided previously in GW2, I’d like to get into it. But honestly the vibe I have gotten across the board has been that its pretty much out of the question unless you are lucky enough to find a “training” group. I looked in LFG and it was pretty much only wanting exp players.
Am I missing that much if I don’t get to experience raiding?
My main gripe is about raids is the same as dungeons and fractals. To many high strung types are drawn to them. ANet seems to go out of their way to lock content and rewards behind forced multi-player instances because they assume everyone wants or should to be social. PvE is about as social as many people want to be. Going into pressure cooker instances is very stressful for some people like myself. Plus there is finding people to join a group when your ready to play.
It’s easy for some people to say that you don’t have to do it but if you want specific achievements, unlocks or rewards it’s your only choice.
I unfortunately have had to do Ascalonian Catacombs so I can get Ascalonian Tears to make the Nightfury Skin. My experiences haven’t been the best.
I really wish ANet would give us a version of heroes (controlled NPCs) like GW1 that we can use for dungeons and raids. You could fill the player slots with real players or heroes. If we could use our own characters for the hero slots we could equip and build them to our needs.

Dungeons, fractals and raids are a nightmare for me. I try to avoid them as much as possible. I am not good at playing, but I always give my best and try to be helpful. But that’s not good enough for people and if I make just one tiny mistake they’ll kick me out as fast as possible and don’t give me chance.
I still need to find the fractal spoon for the mastery point. I hate it. Finding a group is difficult enough…but finding a nice group…sigh… :< And when I finally find a group I am really scared to play and make a mistake. It’s so stressful. I like PvE the most, because people there are nice and relaxed and no one gets angry if you make a mistake ._.
