It’s just an question I encountered when I was selling my loots from my bag on the TP today. Only 1/4 of medium and heavy armor I received that are leveled 70-80 have an actual demand for them.(Not much tho) While all light armor i got all sold perfectly without a problem.
I could understand the heavy armor problem since there’s only 2 of them.(soon 3) But the guardian and the warrior are arguable the most popular classes in the game.
Medium have 3 classes like light but much lower demand for their armor. The ranger and thief are around the top most played classes.
All of the light classes never seem to reach far in regards in their quantity except maybe the ele.
So why are light armor so much more demanded than other types of armor on TP?

Because of silk. It is the most sought after material because it is needed to make Damask.

Salvage items also work http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Salvage_item. Salvage items also have the advantage of not being affected by your level.

Pretty all of the above light armor salvages into cloth which is needed for damask which is needed for all ascended armor.

It’s a combination of the both the above. But just to put a little perspecitve on it, every Ascended Armor piece requires one insgnia, but every insignia requires 3 bolts of damask. So every character, regardless of Weight Class, requires a minimum of 18 bolts of damask.

However individual recipes for armor pieces have their own Damask requirements, so it’s even more than that in practice ( 25 Bolts for heavy armor, 24 Bolts for Medium Armor, and a whopping 36 Bolts for Light armor).

The combination of universal demand (assuming players are crafting ascended) and the lack of cloth based harvesting nodes means that Cloth and Cloth items will (almost) always be the most valuable of (none rare) crafting materials.

Edited to add: I only take the time to point out the heavy Damask requirements, because leather is also only salvagable (no leather nodes), but is dirt cheap at all tiers. This illustrates the significantly higher need/demand for cloth (and Bolts of Damask) than for leather.

The cloth issue is definitely an annoying one.

because of all the crafting professions, tailor is the most expensive. (which is weird tho, you need allot more steel then cloth to make armor.)

Just FYI — the mats you get from salvaging armor aren’t dependent on your character’s level. It’s the item’s level that determines the mat:

Material – Item level
Jute – 0 – 20
Wool – 16 – 33
Cotton – 31 – 48
Linen – 44 – 63
Silk – 58 – 80
Gossamer – 74 – 80

The overlapped levels produce a mixture of mats.

So why are light armor so much more demanded than other types of armor on TP?

As already mentioned, the demand for White/blue/green/yellow rarity gear on the tp is tied to the salvage value of the item and doesnt originate from people who actually want to equip that gear.

For most medium and heavy armor, the value of the salvaged mats (leather and ore) isnt higher than the vendor value of the item itself, so people dont put in buy orders.
Silk however, is more expensive, so people put in buy orders for light armor in order to salvage it for silk.

Frankly, it’s because ANet’s lead economist kinda sucks at his job.

He has actually stated on multiple occasions that this enormous disparity is intentional but gives no reason for it. Likely because there is no reason, and he does not care, and when given the ability to put in work that will make something good for the players possible, or just say no to it and cite the potential economic repercussions, he’ll just say no. He is not a player, and has less vested interest in this games success or player satisfaction than he does in enforcing his own economic theories. In his mind, this is not ‘our’ game world of epic fantasy heroics and combat, this is ‘his’ personal monopoly board, which himself set up as banker.

Before this turns into another silk prices, and supply and demand discussion. These this were discussed at length in this thread: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Will-Bolts-of-Damask-ever-drop-in-price/page/5#post4810456

Please refer to the discussion there, or have the threads merged, because they are essentially the same thing. While the linked thread does deal more with damask, it boils down to cloth and methods of aquiring it, prices on the TP, and what should be done about it. Pretty much what this thread is talking about.

Thanks!

Because cloth is required for all 3 armor classes, to make the insignia, but when salvaging all 3 armor classes, you only get cloth from light armor.

That along not having cloth gathering nodes makes cloth always more demanded than any of the other materials.

If insignia used leather, cloth cost were slightly reduced and cloth and leather nodes were added, cloth would be normalized in cost compared to the other materials.

Long story short, everyone needs silk, but silk only comes from light armor. It doesn’t matter that X amount of Silk Bolts go into the heavy armor, none will ever come out. It’s like a black whole.
