Why no /inspect ?

…I cannot, however, justify inspect otherwise when you could simply ask or require players to ping their gear (but at least then the player has a choice of whether or not, therefore playing the game they want to).
In order to respect people’s right to not be disturbed, you suggest as an alternative that I ask the person about their gear instead. Isn’t that more disruptive than simply clicking /inspect on them and being on my way, with that person remaining unaware that anything even just happened?
An auto inspect feature is only for being able to critique someone else’s build, which is rude and presumptuous, unless invited by the person being critiqued upon themselves.
This is a ridiculous claim. God forbid, i don’t have every piece of armor/weapon in the game memorized and i get curious as to what that shiny thing that person has equipped might be.
Or maybe i see an Ele that looks like they have a similar set-up as me and i want to see what kind of sockets they have.
I mean, who does that? Just goes around, inspecting people’s gear, for the sole purpose of making you feel bad. If someone exhibits that kind of behavior, it’s not because of /inspect, it’s probably because they are a bad person.
Whisper that player and ask? I’ve done this before, and players have been more than helpful.
I’ve done this before and not gotten a response :/ It would be much easier for everyone to not have to bother them at all.

I suppose that also depends on your definition of disturbed! I certainly wouldn’t mind (or be disturbed) if someone asked me about my gear. That said, I do think ANet should make pinging gear easier. Then I could just ping it in my response, or if I’m not interested in sharing, then I won’t do it at all (though I don’t see that happening).
However, /inspect can disrupt a player’s way of playing a game when someone doesn’t agree with their gear/build in a particular instance. I think you are probably the vocal majority (such as seen in the forums), but overall minority in that you would not abuse this. You would inspect because you were curious about someone’s gear, not because you were going to judge their play style.
Several people have commented also about supporting a cosmetic inspect. And I’m sorry you never heard a response. =/ Mine have all been positive, which can certainly make either one of us biased!

Kitten-heads. Don’t say they don’t exist. It’s kitten-heads (maybe not the same ones) that you say lie about their gear and want to leech on your dungeon group. Involuntary inspection can and has led to unpleasantness for people I know. I don’t think it’s a good idea to enable this behavior. Any system that is introduced into an MMO that can be abused will be abused.

If we’re gunna base our tools on the “worst of the worst players” then let’s get rid of the chat window while we’re at it. That way no one’s feelings get hurt. If you really wanna chat that bad, just open up mumble or TS.
And if you so concerned about criticism then play a single player game. It’s an MMO, so dealing with other humans is kind of its niche.
Regardless, no matter how mean this mythical “elitist” can be, they cannot force you to play a certain way. Only you can decide that. Don’t cave in to bullies. This is why we can’t have nice things, because the bullies have won already. Any addition is held under the scrutiny of "Oh! but how will the “elitists” use this against me!"

If you would like to use the chat as an example… Then if /inspect was added to the game, I would like the option to disable it for my account. People are abusive in chat, and I can block them. I cannot block people from inspecting my character (unless they added a disable option, which I would see no problem with). And it’s very possible that it’s the other way around (abusive players are louder)! However, people have already shared experiences of being rejected based on their pinged gear without an inspect feature. Adding it would make it easier for players to kick others out for this very reason.
On the other hand, would you support a cosmetic inspect, or are you more interested in the stats?
Add inspect, make it optional (like Aion). Problem solved. Those who demand to be able to inspect can just pass by people who refuse to activate it just like they would if that person had poor gear.
This method actually makes an awesome method to weed out players both sides don’t want to deal with. Even after full ascended gear releases, and I’m running full purples WoW style, I STILL won’t turn mine on; and if someone whines to me about it I’ll know I don’t want to group with them. Whammo- we both realize the other isn’t someone we want to run with and a miserable party experience is avoided.

The games I have played that were designed well would have an option to reject inspect, duels, whispers, etc.
Honestly, add inspect and give the user the option to decline all inspects, request permission to inspect, and accept all inspects. Easy as that. Any problem?
Also, don’t make the case that people will just kick those that decline inspects. They could already do that if they refuse to link.

stats, most definitely. I think an opt-out would be reasonable. But considering a major concern has been about being not-allowed to join dungeons once someone can /inspect you, so i would assume if you can’t be inspected it would be an automatic ungrouping. All this assumes you’re also trying to join groups contingent on gear (aka, zerker groups), which everyone here also says they try to avoid.
i honestly dont get the issue. I guess i’m the only one that doesn’t have PTSD from dealing with “elitists.” I mean i did dabble in LoL and only got my feelings hurt a few times, haha, so maybe i just have a thick hide.
I like the idea of being able to disable it and certainly see no problems with it.

This is very true and I am one of the people who wouldn’t even care what other people think as I’ll play my way and as long as I group with open minded people (ie my guild) then I’m good.
But I am empathetic enough to also understand that there are people on the other side of those avatar’s with all ranges of emotions and feelings, and if by my actions or inaction I can make a better gaming experience for them, then I will. Someone will be rude, needlessly, and someone will be hurt needlessly, and I don’t see the benefit of aiding and abetting that just so you can get around someone who does not wish to reply to you.

PS: Difference being only one of those groups wants to force the other to play with them.
From my previous post:
“If the argument for inspect is that you want to make sure someone has X gear before getting in your group, then simply ask them to ping (even make a /inspect which will auto ping your gear) or don’t invite them to your group.”
Neither group is being forced to do anything for anyone or by anyone. You have the tools to make the group composition as you see fit. An auto inspect feature is only for being able to critique someone else’s build, which is rude and presumptuous, unless invited by the person being critiqued upon themselves.
Big issue that renders your entire argument useless: People lie.
Your argument is invalid.
Using that same example, people want to wear cheap clothes that look like the expensive brands but without the high price. If you invent a tool that when pointed at the clothes tells you that the quality is lower they but cheaper they will be judged for it therefore they’re affected by it.
No they’re not. They can ignore those people. Especially since this is a game world, so, while in the real world people could, at an extreme, physically force you to pay them attention, in-game they can do absolutely nothing.
Your argument is invalid.
Just one argument that even resembles some sort of legitimacy. You can’t do it, because there isn’t one.
If my argument is invalid then so is yours, I’m just elaborating on your example and adding the real consequence to it. You’re the one who used the real world example so then arguing my point saying “this is just a game” is a little contradictory. I’m not saying inspect will definitely be a bad thing at all, just pointing out that there will always be consequences.

it goes both ways. Only group/play with guildies, friends, peers…avoid speed runs, try not to hang out with jerks. /inspect becomes a non-issue,
Beyond that— IF someone has the audacity to criticize you gearing then—1) Take their advice!!! Maybe you don’t know everything and your experience in-game will improve with an optimal gear set. 2) Have the gorram self-confidence to stand up to them and defend your gearing decisions!! It’s your character and (hopefully) you built it that way for a reason.

Firefly!
There is no reason that anybody should have to defend their gear. Other people should just accept it and either allow them in their group, or move on. Unfortunately, this is an ideal MMO world and just won’t happen. But /inspect will make this worse, and does not encourage players to be more accepting of other gear/play styles.
I don’t see any problem with allowing a disable option for /inspect.
Big issue that renders your entire argument useless: People lie.
How do they lie about the gear they have on, when it puts a link to it in the chat box?
Unless you claim they have a set of full exotics with runes and sigils just for the purpose of getting past the invite phase, then they will not be stopped by inspect. They will wear it for the inspect, then switch out.
But this still tells you nothing about their build, damage output, or skill, just that they bought a set of gear you find acceptable.

We’re just going around in circles, but i personally have no reason to believe the GW2 community is so bad that people will randomly call you out for having sub-optimal gear.
Maybe if you’re trying to do zerker speed runs, but honestly you should know what to expect when you get into that.

I’m not afraid of Elitists. I honestly couldn’t care less about them, nor have I even ever had bad experiences with them (was that a complete sentence?)… Rather, for me, it all comes down to the simple: I want to play my game the I way I want to play, which means people can mind their own business, trust that I can play my class, or just ask me if they are curious about my gear. :P

You act like it’s particularly difficult or unheard of to have several sets of gear. Several of my characters have more than one set with them. Only one of them has MF gear though, and it was “cheapo” MF gear acquired specifically for the current Southsun supply box farming, but it wouldn’t have taken me a great deal of effort to simply transmute it into a “normal” looking set. I’ve seen several people with full exotic “normal look” MF sets.
Remember they don’t even need to equip it, just ping it from their inventory… Or even have copy paste ready with item-code links to the appropriate gear.
Edit: Since you edited as well – it tells me if they’re MF leeching at least. And why shouldn’t inspect let me see traits and skills? PvP one does. Seems simple enough to do.

You get a reply just because of your tongue and cheek attitude towards underpants shinnies.
It sucks for those of use who would be responsible and not judge people based on their build, or abuse our knowledge to belittle someone. But it is undeniable that there are those people, who would use this as a means to do just that. Even with an ignore they would just claim, without knowledge, the player to be bad (as someone in this thread has actually all ready done when turning it off was suggested).
This is not a fear of a mythical creature, these people do exist and unfortunately ruin it for the rest of us. I should be able to drive more then 40 on a major road, but because of irresponsible drunks and MADD mothers, I can’t.

If you really feel that way, then i don’t understand why you would advocate against an /inspect feature. Despite the rhetoric on the forums, my experiences in at least 4 other games with /inspect features have never yielded any negative consequences as a result of the /inspect feature.
/inspect feature won’t force you to change anything about how you play the game. In fact, it might even end up improving your experience.

It will change how they play their game. They might not get into some parties unless they hide their gear.
Their meaning of play whatever they want means to force people to play with them. Eventhough those people don’t want to play with them.

I wasn’t claiming people don’t have multiple gear sets (I was being glib in a mock inquisitorial way). I am claiming that if someone specifically bought a set of Zerker gear (not intending to use it which would be a waste of gold) just to pass a ping, then it doesn’t solve the inspect issue either as they would just wear it for the inspect. If they turned inspect off after allowing you to see the Zerker gear, then that means you have to make a choice. Do you trust they didn’t switch gear, or do you kick them immediately for not allowing inspect?
But having this does not solve your problem. Your problem is really only solved by playing with people you trust, are familiar with, or have already coordinated builds with.

The reasons for wanting /inspect go beyond having my msg requests ignored, and the reasons for not wanting /inspect are baseless and perpetuated by fear of the boogie man of MMOs…the dreaded….Elitists….
It may negatively impact my gaming experience if I struggle to find a group to play with because they don’t find my gear or play style up to their standards. And it doesn’t matter whether their opinion matters to you or not – if I can’t find a group (I am not committing to a Guild at the moment) to do a dungeon with, then that aspect of the game, something I want to play, is not currently available or becomes more difficult to achieve. For new players, this could absolutely ruin their gaming experience if they are unlucky enough to only run into these kinds of players.
Others should be able to play how they want. If they want an inspect, then I say have it. But let me disable it. Circles, circles. :P
Also your strawman about chat, I have a fix for that. Create a Party/Guild only chat box and bang, no more insipid and inane chatter.
it goes both ways.
Well then I will leave the argument at this:

I’m not sure where in my post I said anything about players having to play with others who have what you consider to be sub-par gear? I said if they want an inspect feature, I certainly will not say no to it… Rather that I want an option to disable it for me, and others, who don’t want it while those who do can keep it. If someone won’t tell you what they’re gear is, what’s stopping you from just not playing with them? You have the choice to kick someone out of their party just like I have the choice to not share my gear details with you.
For those trying to shame/ belittle those advocating a healthy boundary normally found in society (the right to share or not share information), your curiosity, your need for your convenience, your demand for having things your way for your benefit (e.g. your erroneous sense of entitlement) stops at the door of my right to choose whether or not to share (privacy).
You have the right to play the game the way you choose within the bounds of the EULA. If you demand that I share information before joining a group, then I have the right to not do so and face the consequences of not doing so.
Oh and btw, I am elite. I am a min/maxer. I am not an elitist. I am also a person who values privacy and the right to set that healthy boundary.
Privacy has nothing to do with quality of gear/specs, playstyle, perceived or otherwise.
It’s a core value. If you are interested in my gear/specs, you can certainly ask. I have the right to choose whether or not to respond. And I may choose not to respond for a variety of reasons. I may choose to be friendly and helpful. I get to make that choice. Just because you demand an answer does not guarantee you will receive one. That implies that, somehow, you have the right to that information. You do not.
As to /inspect itself. Again, I repeat myself:
/Inspect enables if not creates an environment that damages, degrades, and destroys community, as well as arguably both build and gameplay diversity.
My argument is that /inspect has no place in GW2 because the concept of inspect itself is fundamentally flawed.
In reality, the only real purposes that are served by /inspect are abusive and divisive. And an invasion of privacy.

He’s reacting because the same people who would kick you for your gear will kick you for barring an inspection. With regard to that reason, an opt out would not help you, whereas it might deter someone from PMing you to tell you you kitten because of your build.
Remember: If you’re against /inspect, you’re obviously a crappy build / bad player / leech. Oh, and you’re the elitist too.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna have to get my cognitive dissonance meter replaced. These suckers aren’t cheap…
If not wanting dead weight in my party is elitism I’m elitist as hell and proud. I’m not forcing you to play with me, but you are trying to force me to play with you. All I want is to play with likeminded people. What the whole “anti-inspect” crowd seems to want is to deny me that, to force me to play with them regardless.
Give me ONE legitimate reason why inspect shouldn’t exist? If what you people claim is right, and you simply don’t care and just “play for fun”, whatever that means – as if everyone else plays for boredom and frustration, then what will this change for you? You’ll be kicked out of parties you wouldn’t want to be in in the first place. You’ll be rejected from parties with people like me, whom you seem to hate and not want to play with. If you’re being honest about your reasons, you lose nothing. If anything we do you a favor. If what you say is true and you don’t need me and people like me to do your job for you, then why do you want? Why not just make a party with other people like you?
And don’t give me “privacy” bullkitten. I’m not looking through your underwear I’m learning the material of the clothes you’re wearing.
I’ll give you the reason, which knowing your writing style and previous posts you’ll surely outright dismiss-the pseudo-elitism will spread like the proper plague it is, making it extremely annoying for all of those who don’t prefer to party with players that all too often think too highly of themselves. People who are not as good as you would like will get the builds and gear YOU want them to have, just to get into your parties ( not me, many others will.) Having ANet endorse this behavior will make it the rule rather than the exception, ultimately harming the community as a whole-and this just to appease a-CURRENTLY-small pocket of players who are being “inconvenienced” by the lack of a inspect tool.
We won’t agree, so please refrain from replying in the inflammatory way you usually do, and let’s leave it at that. Leave me to my"ignorance" (just because I disagree with your “all-knowing truth”), and let ANet decide what’s best for the game and its community.
We should be able to use whatever build we want.
You can use whatever you want when you are alone, but in a party there are four other people you should think of. People ought to respect their fellow team members and don’t force them to carry anyone in masterwork or sentinel/cleric/shaman/rabid/carrion mix of gear. Same goes with selfish magic find leeching, it helps you, but kicks the other four people in their faces.
Because my gear is none of your frigging business.
If you join my party, it is my business, because I will have to make up for your bad gear.
That’s also assuming the people in berserker’s (I know that’s what you want, because that’s what every group wants) actually knows how to use it properly. A lot of people can’t play when they’re that squishy, and it’s blatantly obvious when they’re dead every fight.

I loved this post, especially “I am elite, but not an elitist”. It’s so sad that people are overlooking that players don’t become “great” just because they are using supposedly optimal, cookie-cutter builds with the “right” gear. In fact, good players play well regardless gear anyway. There’s no inspecting someone’s skill and/or experience, which no gear can compensate for. Yep, “all things equal…” and all of that, but indirectly forcing pugs to gear in a certain way (which is what an inspect tool will ultimately foster) will mean that many players will conform to the elitist norm, not that they will necessarily be “elite” in any way or fashion.
In short, totally agreed.
The biggest problem, as has been mentioned a few times in this long thread, with an /inspect feature is the lack of privacy and user control.
What privacy? This is the stupidest argument possible… Am I “invading your privacy” when I look at your character in the game? I’m not reading your PMs or browsing through your inventory.
As mentioned before this isn’t like seeing through your clothes, it’s a pointing a machine at them that tells me what brand and/or material they are. You’re not even affected.
First of all, you didn’t pay for my account, I did and that being said you have no business knowing anything at all about my account my characters my build my gear, anything. This whole need to know everything BS society makes me want to yak, who do you think you are that entitles you to know anything at all about me or the characters I play. I am sick to death with the presumptuous attitude of MMO players, stop with the false sense of entitlement; you have none when it comes to my characters!

Conversely, I am getting sick of people crying for privacy concerns about their characters in an MMO. Frankly, it makes me think that you are an old person who is new to the internet and doesn’t really get it.
I also find that you and others like you have a false sense of entitlement. I haven’t done the research in the terms of the game, but I would wager that you do not own anything in the game, including your character. ANet and NCSOFT own them.
People can have multiple sets of gear and not wear one all the time. Plenty of people have a proper set of gear and MF for leeching. That said, your entire argument is hinging on a flawed point:
If they turned inspect off
Abbawha? Turn it off? Why would they even be capable of that? lol… Go into PvP right now, see if you can turn it off. Can you? No. Exactly. I certainly never asked for a system you can turn off – that is inherently flawed, as you adequately pointed out.
No. I don’t ask, you don’t need to show. I check your gear and traits when I want – just like in PvP. You can check mine as well, whenever you want. The only people this system hurts are the dishonest. It actually makes it a lot easier on everyone else.

Do you also try to stop people in the street from looking at you? No? Why not? They’re invading your “privacy” just as much. They certainly didn’t pay for your life! I don’t see you asking for the ability to just blank out your character so others can’t see it. Why not?
Did you know that in many societies you’re not legally allowed to hide your identity in public? Are you going to make an uproar and fight against that? No? Why not?
When you can answer that you’ll understand why your entire argument is simply dishonest bullkitten.
Old person…new to the internet is an oxymoron or is that too complex for you to understand. As far as ownership of the pixels in the game, what i do with them is my right as long as i do not break any of the terms of agreement and when i read them…yes some of us do that, nowhere did it say i must parcel out my character information to anyone named Jemmi or anyone else for that matter see for yourself; https://www.guildwars2.com/en/legal/guild-wars-2-content-terms-of-use/
Also if “it” is bowing down to pressure from those of the me gen well I hate to disappoint you but that isn’t going to happen anytime soon.

How many people that I pass trough on the street are able to know what level of education do I have, where I work and what my age is? Imagine if we had a tool to just scan all of that extra information. Now imagine if we based our decisions on that information. “No sir, you don’t get to buy this newspaper, you work as a salesman and we want our newspaper to be prestigious. Come back and ask for it again when you’re a bank manager at least!”.
“you are very attractive, I would talk to you and get to know you but this device says that you’re 25. My ideal age range is 20 to 24. You’re over the limit. Sorry”.

Well since i’m short on time and my tolerance for the ridiculous is at a low let me just say this. Can i stop someone from looking at me on the street, nope…they see what i’m wearing but have no clue as to what brand, size it is nor do they know what’s underneath that, if you think you have that right…go ahead and tear someones clothes off in public and see what happens to you LOL!
So in short your argument is as ridiculous as every other one you have put forth and I’m hoping the moderators bury this thread along with any notion of considering the need for a tool the community has long argued against.

It is not an oxymoron. Do you know what oxymorons are?
Oxymoron is a figure of speech that includes contradictory terms that appear in conjunction, such as “living dead” or “jumbo shrimp”
The phrase “an old person who is new to the internet” does not have two contradictory terms in conjunction . Additionally, an old person can be new to something without it being contradictory.
For the link you provided me, the only mention of ownership is the following quote
You acknowledge and agree that no title nor any other form of ownership to the content has been or will be transferred to you from ArenaNet nor from anyone else
Ha, this is not discussion, this is just a polite argument. Seriously. 8-9 months without the need for Inspect, why ask for it now? Why not 8-9 months ago? Or in beta? Obviously no one minded, why is this even an issue. As long as people are divided, this idea is going no where. In my opinion, however the cons of this feature far outweigh any “Pros” for it to be of any use to the game.
Do you also try to stop people in the street from looking at you? No? Why not? They’re invading your “privacy” just as much. They certainly didn’t pay for your life!
You’re right, we don’t stop people from looking at us in the street. Just like we don’t stop people from looking at us in the game. But if someone on the street suddenly ran up and tried to rip open my bag and dig through the contents to see what I had on me, or started peeling back my shirt to see what sort of undershirt I was wearing, we would have some words. Same as in game.
Also if “it” is bowing down to pressure from those of the me gen well I hate to disappoint you but that isn’t going to happen anytime soon.It is not an oxymoron. Do you know what oxymorons are?
Oxymoron is a figure of speech that includes contradictory terms that appear in conjunction, such as “living dead” or “jumbo shrimp”The phrase “an old person who is new to the internet” does not have two contradictory terms in conjunction . Additionally, an old person can be new to something without it being contradictory.
For the link you provided me, the only mention of ownership is the following quote
You acknowledge and agree that no title nor any other form of ownership to the content has been or will be transferred to you from ArenaNet nor from anyone else
How about an old person who has been on the internet since it was first introduced, does that qualify as an oxymoron? Pathetic, old does not mean inexperienced of the internet. anyway the argument was entitlement and you nor anyone else has any when it comes to knowing anything about my character beyond the look i sport or the name i use.

PROS:
1 Can be selective in grouping for those who wish to be selective
2 Assist with helping guildmates and friends who are new to 80
3 Determine what certain weapon or armoor skins are that you see people sporting
4 Explore different builds on other players for ideas on your own character
CONS:
5 Could possibly increase elitism (no evidence for or against this)
6 Privacy concerns
7 EDIT: FROM TOLMOS: Players can be turned off the game after being booted at a dungeon for having sub-optimal gear
Arguments against
1 Being selective is rude and will ruin my gameplay
2 Why would one argue against helping guild mates or friends?
3 “I don’t want people to know what I am wearing, because I want to be unique in my appearance”
4 Unsure why one would be against this, but perhaps privacy argument?
5 There is no evidence to support this. At this point it is all speculation.
5b People can party up with friends or guildees, or be specific on gw2lfg.com what they are looking for. Inspect can only help enforce any requirements gw2lfg.com specified.
5c There are already elitist people in this game and there is nothing being done against this
6 You do not own your character, and thus hold no privacy rights to the character.
6b Your privacy concerns are not a serious concern, because they are not protecting real world information (such as SSN, SIN, Credit card, address info etc)
7 Players may be turned off the game from having super hard dungeons that they run in sub optimal gear, and that their guildmates will have a harder time helping them pass this given the no inspect feature
I may have missed something, but have been following this thread for awhile and tried to some up every argument from both sides of the pro’s and con’s. Please let me know if I missed and I will edit and add.
From my summary, at this time, the Pro’s seem to outweigh the Con’s.
