Flip the question why do people PvP? PvP has no real consequences, goals, or gains it is purposeless outside of competitiveness, which isn’t much of a selling point nor is there even much competitiveness outside of Tourneys.

Repetition can also be applied to PvP as well, in WvW you’re going to attack, defend, etc the same nodes, fight similar blobs, and play the same map. In sPvP you are fighting in the same maps, against a preset number of foes, doing the same basic challenge, and usually fighting enemy classes that are similar meta builds.

In the same way PvE might seem repetitive and pointless to you PvP seems the same to others. Really there is no actual point in either in GW2, its one of the selling points and pitfalls of the game.

Oh, and less kitten-swinging in PvE too. I like having fun while I play my games. Having someone shove their ego in my face is not fun. And I get far, /far/ less of that in PvE.

I’m in the same boat as Miku; I have a great deal of fun in PvE. Being part of a guild that organizes Triple Trouble is always good fun and is very sociable – challenging but a fun challenge.

Although, with that said I do also have a lot of fun in WvW as well. PvP, not so much mainly from the toxic players and chat (though I usually hide the chat window whenever I do venture there).

That sucks. Well, I would be screwed then, my reaction time is slow because I have problems with my arms. I don’t even have a chance in PvP, lol.

For something more concrete, I enjoy playing PvE content that is challenging and social, like dungeons, fractals & Triple Trouble.

I think a large number of players unfortunately just sort of float in space & time, doing all-zerker all-stack pug runs of dungeons, silent chest farms or champ trains to farm gold for the purpose of farming it – and while that can be fun for some, most people start to feel a disconnect from the world & the game over time.

For me, the fun things are getting those Triple Trouble kills coordinated with over 90 people, or doing Fractals or dungeons properly with friends (by properly I mean you don’t stack behind a box and pray your zerker gear will mean you do more damage than the enemy).

Those work for me, on the side I bounce around the world doing jumping puzzles, or just generally trying to find interesting places in the game.

WvW, its a competitive in theory, so, win it’s the point!
PVP, same thing!

because in competitive theres only 1 winner. the rest are losers

one group gets the “fun” of winning
the rest gets the frustration of losing.

and in PvP because no one wants to lose, they get really toxic when you make a mistake (it goes from a misclick or a innocent mistake, into players screamign at you that your a kitten noob, team lost cause of you. go unistall. get a brain")
or if you win, the enemy team curses you (“hacker, noob, kitten spammer”)

and i really dislike that

in PvE, the AI bots don’t care if they lose. they don’t insult you.

its more relaxed, mistakes are more easily forgiven. and as such its a more fun evironment where people work together to have fun.
it might lack the challenge of PvP, but sometimes a casual relaxing fun PvE is what you need.

competitive PvP is frustrating and people take it to seriously

PvE is more social as well as people can sit down and bring up topics of interest outside the match that people can laugh or enjoy.

why do you breathe every day
why do you go through the same routine. going to school or work, coming home for dinner going to sleep.

doing the same things over and over?
in tennis you hit the ball over the net over and over
in baseball you hit the ball and run the bases over and over.
in PvP you cap the same circles, kill the same enemies with the same key pattern. or cap the same towers.

everything in life is repetition. its the satisfaction you get from doing or finishing it that makes it worth it

I spend most of my time on spvp. I often only have about half an hour to play at any given time. So, this suits me very well as I can just jump right into some action and play at a high level.

However, I do enjoy pve as a change of pace (and vice versa). I have 7 lvl 80 characters, all different classes. I enjoy the options that are available – dungeons, living story, open world bosses. I did not enjoy map completion and will never do it again. I do like farming for gear as a diversion as well. I like the social atmosphere of pve much better than pvp. Overall, I play pve more laid back and relaxed. I enjoy getting with friends and doing co-op activities.

All that said. I couldn’t live with just one or the other.

GW2 is currently the game I play to just relax. I play other games more seriously. I would love for this to change, but the game hasn’t really offered anything that allows someone to take it “seriously”. I’m really hoping HoT changes that.

WvW in particular feels hopeless, no end product, it is just cyclic and repetitive.

PvP I can never be competitive at because of various physical restrictions that I have.

Hmm Your comparison would be more appropriate if you literally couldn’t do wvw right now, which is not true you CAN, you choose not to due to the current event stupid/thing. It’s not like they removed the game mode from the game. As far as new map balance, I’d give that time and see how it turns out.

Also you really shouldn’t just say pve/pvp players, as the wvw current thing has literally NO impact on S-pvp.

I play Wvw, and I don’t feel that way, now realize when ever you use all encompassing words or statements like “every single” it’s almost always hyperbole.

Why do you play pve?

Why don’t you play guardian?

Why don’t you pvp?
Because, generally speaking, I don’t enjoy it . Though, I do dabble on occasion

Although he is generalizing in his post, I too am quite upset at the way this week has turned out for the (diminishing) fighting guilds in WvW. This event was most likely a big hit for the PvE crowd (no numbers though), but IMO those of us that enjoyed WvW without the k-train aspect feel like we are being tossed aside in lieu of their golden children.

They ran an event. A limited time event. One perhaps intended to introduce new players to the game mode. It seems unlikely that most will stick, but a few might. In my experience any pvp mode needs periodic infusion of new blood. Hopefully this will help in that regard.

Still, if one cannot support one’s position without lying (not refering to you), one’s position may very well be lacking in merit.

I play PvE because I like the environment and maps. Also the variety. It is NOT the same thing over and over to me.

I don’t care for WvW or PvP because to me, that is the same thing over and over and over ad nauseam. This zerg around mindlessly in WvW on the same maps over and over and over. PvP is the same thing to me. Just a series of fighting other people on the same maps.

It is all perspective. I can find a lot more that I want to do out in the PvE world than I will ever find in PvP or WvW.

I guess I don’t know how you can say it is the same thing over and over in PvE when you have many more places to go and tasks to accomplish. Weird.

Well I CAN’T do WvW right now, and I’ll explain why. I can’t have fun fighting in WvW this week, whether it’s roaming or group fighting because there are superfast, super-powerful golems running everywhere, and even a lot of people who aren’t in golems are abusing a bug to have that extra speed and damage boost with their normal skills. It wouldn’t be very fun or very normal WvW for me to be getting killed by super-powerful golems and players everywhere. My larger guild for group fights has cancelled all their raids for the week because of the event, so I can’t do large fights with them. I can’t scout because there is no point right now when everyone is just doing insane fast, powerful golem Ktrains. Why would I waste my time and money trying to scout/upgrade anything to defend against that? And who can I call in for help when most of the WvW guilds are taking a break this week?

I also wasn’t talking about PvP players. I only mentioned “PvP” when I talked about making PvE maps “PvP-able”, in which I meant making PvE maps player-versus-player-able. It had nothing to do with sPvP.

There doesn’t always need to be a “point” or an end game. It’s just a way to pass the time. It’s really not fair to bash one form of play over another. It really is personal preference. Cheers!

You can, you choose not to because you don’t like the current event choosing not to and “CAN’T” are not the same thing. If wvw was brought offline or down then “CAN’T” would be accurate.

Wait what? Sorry I seriously don’t follow this at all. I was simply trying to point out saying “pvp” when complaining strictly about the wvw isn’t a good word choice, because S-pvp also exists, if pvpers want to pvp they can do it in either place.

There’s no point to WvW: the matches are the same every week, the objectives are the same, the complaints are the same, even the trolls are the same.

There’s no point to PvP: the matches have been the same for years, there are tons of people who don’t know how to play getting mixed in with those who do, people game the rewards system, the complaints are the same.

(to be clear: I don’t personally believe either statement; I just think they are fair arguments to make, in the context of the original post)

In other words, it’s all in the eye of the beholder what constitutes boring/repetitive and what people find challenging. You don’t like PvE? no problem, don’t play it.

I like how you turned a “Why you play PVE?” thread into “Why I can’t play WvW” rant. Frankly, your hypothetical scenario wouldn’t happen or if it did, would likely be a temporary event. PVE will always be the core of any MMORPG because the story is inevitably tied to a scripted, NPC-laden series of events.

Why I play PVE … other than the obvious “because I like it”, I specifically like gathering and farming and optimizing my returns for doing so by selling in TP.

Obviously, everyone likes different aspects of the game OP

PVP: played in beginning with guildies, learning my main’s class. Boring
WvW: In the olden days before AP Chests, we had to earn badges of honor for the Gift of Battle. Played enough WvW to last a lifetime. Besides the objectives never really made sense to me. Capture a camp, leave, find another without leaving personnel behind to keep the original one captured, and so on. rinse and repeat.

PVE: Exploration, dungeons, rampages with guildies, levelling all my girls, gathering, crafting, farming world bosses (who cares if I’ve done the Maw 2000 times, or 1k Jorlag, either for that matter.)

In the end, it’s all repetitious. LS has made it less so, whatever floats anyone’s boat.

Why you guys play PVE?

For me it’s about setting a personal goal (Gear/Task/Wealth) and working to achieve it. Map completion on all classes was one that I really dug into, reaching 5k gold through investment and farming was another but in the end it’s about setting a finish line and seeing how well you reach it.

For the goal oriented and obsessive type of personality it’s a way of venting without driving your family or friends completely insane.

Personally I have never seen the point in PvP. To me it boils down to making yourself feel good by making someone else feel bad. I guess that’s just a part of human nature I didn’t absorb to well

I could reverse the question OP. Why do you PvP or WvW? WvW you run around with a zerg, in circles, on 4 maps, capturing a keep that you’ll only have to capture again tomorrow. Most SPvP matches, unless you have a premade team and you’re against another premade team aren’t that exciting. You win 500-200 or you lose that way. Then people leave and you’re down a player. Yes, that’s very competitive. Not to mention computer systems and lag and even where you’re playing from affect your viability in PvE. Imagine a competitive sport where people from a different country automatically get a handicap.

I bet more people play solitaire than play Guild Wars 2, and that’s not really all that competitive. There’s a lot more to life than competing and take it from someone who’s competed all his life.

Sometimes, you just want to play a game to relax.

I play PVE because I enjoy it. Everyone’s definition of “fun” is different, if you have more fun in pvp/wvw then play there:)

Unfortunately, we can’t. Anet has turned WvW into PvE for the week, and it sadly looks like they plan on making WvW permanent PvE Ktrain with the new maps in the expansion.

Here’s a question: How would PvE players feel if PvE land suddenly became PvP-able? If people could just run around and kill you while you’re simply trying to do whatever makes you happy. Now realize that that is exactly how every single WvW player feels right now.

Dude, hyperbole much? WvW was basically PvE from the get-go unless you were unfortunate enough to stumble upon an enemy roamer or zerg. If you wanted to take a keep/outposts and get champ bags, well get in the zerg. If you want to do anything truly beneficial- unless your against two vastly unpopulated servers so you can leisurely siege a door by yourself as if you were in PvE anyway- get in the zerg. I’ve done WvW for a few weeks, went back to PvE because PvE is WvW without the stress of conflict interactions between two opposing human groups. Essentially WvW was, is and will be what you are using as an example to kitten PvEers off. To be honest the KTrain in EotM is much more WvW-ish because enemy zergs come across each other a lot more often. All my time in the borderlands and mists was spent AVOIDING the other zerg while at the same time capturing points.

As for on topic, I play PvE because I care about the story well as a way to relax- much like reading a book. Both of which are missing from WvW and PvP.

Because I’m here to work with other players, not kill them.

Just to know…
Why you guys play PVE?

There is no point for me…
You play to farm legendaries, but you can go there and buy a legendary with real money and no effort…

It’s only “4fun”, but do the same things all the time isn’t that fun…

WvW, its a competitive in theory, so, win it’s the point!
PVP, same thing!

Myself I play pve because I need to relax after a hard day at work. Pvp is bit more stressing.
Most of my money goes to bills cos being a grownup sucks. My money do come with an effort….so the term efortless regarding money is not present in most of ppl lives, just for some.
Buying all legendaries in game and beefing from top to bottom eludes all the fun of targeting towards a achievement while playing the game aka " keeping myself on a task to avoid boredome". As long as a task is still present, the game keeps me entertained.

In pve the events, things to do, etc are wider, more diverse and rotating more often than in pvp imo. According to that, your statement about “doing things over and over again in pve” vs pvp is contradictional to some point.

As for WvW competitive aspect, as a dedicated pvp’er I wouldn’t choose GW2 in the first place. Are other games imo that holds the pvp competitional aspect at its finest.
Not to mention the e-sport aspect…..
