Colin – got any examples of what the new variable dailies might be? Is there going to be much of a time gap between the variable versions and the subsetting (eg 4/6)? Feels like you’re going to push players into daily achievements in parts of the game they don’t necessarily like if there’s much of a time gap between the two.

In going back to that whole “let people play the way they want to play” concept:

We’re going to hold off on adding most of the daily achievements that send you to specific parts of the game until we’ve added the ability to select from a list (like 4/6.) The initial version you’ll see with rotating daily achievements won’t feature too many new achievement options, since we don’t want to do more specific type achievements without giving you the choice to pick from a list of stuff you’re more excited about.

The only infinitely repeatable achievement I can think of is Agent of Entropy that you get for salvaging stuff. Playing normally (ie. never going out of my way to salvage stuff), I’ve gotten 140 points out of 4224 total points. I salvage everything that vendors for less than 90c.

If all I lose is those 140 points, I’d be okay with it. However, I’m not sure that I’d qualify as someone who went crazy. It’s 2 points per 200 salvages. So, I’m at about 14,000 items salvaged.

Also, based on the screenshot and the value of dailies (9) and monthlies (35), it looks like you can get a nice amount of stuff each month with the 305 points you’d get for completing 30 dailies and the monthly.

Really looking forward to this.

Just want to quickly point out to get out ahead of it since those numbers are wildly off. You receive 1 crown per daily, and 10 per monthly. (We’re also still tweaking the costs of the items shown in the screen shot, and will continue to adjust them until until the system is released.)

Will we still get the mystic coins along with these new crowns? And will the current karma rewards be effected?

BTW I am loving the direction you are taking in rewarding open world exploration!.

You will still receive all the same rewards you currently get for your daily and monthly achievements, this will be an additional reward on top of it to make it more rewarding.

Yay! Thank you, this is good news.

my quick curiosity question, seeing these crowns and a couple of the things there, are we going to be seeing some ultra-expensive weapon and armor skins for the more hardcore completionists and achievement junkies? I’m hoping that the “ultra expensive” items are at least precursors so that players have a sure way of (one day) obtaining them.

It’s possible that it could come in the January update, yet just wouldn’t factor the January monthly so as to not exclude players from getting their just rewards. Furthermore, it could also be in the February or March updates that the January update is serving as preparation for. I hope our January update is more than just the fractals stuff, though.

eh that’d be a bit exploitable, maybe a box with a randomized exotic in it? That way there’s a chance for a precursor, putting more in circulation, while also giving us a chance at some of the fun named exotics too (IE: Ambrosia is a hilarious focus I’m buying for St. Patrick’s day when it gets close <3)

Even more incentive to do the dailies… and with the way Colin put it about our previous achievement points, the people who went all out and salvaged their way to their high achievement points will be on par with the rest of us a.k.a most of their points stripped…too bad they wasted a lot of money.

So I’m guessing we’ll be able to get 1 token a day and 10-20 in the monthly?

However, there are some achievements which are infinitely repeatable currently. It is highly likely so this new system isn’t broken we’ll need to cap those and people who have made insane progress down one of those lines will lose some of their progress to get back to the cap. I wouldn’t recommend anyone go bonkers trying to progress an infinitely repeatable achievement category in anticipation of the release of this system, as you will likely lose some points/progress if you take it to an extreme number.

Why does everyone keep referring to “losing points” and “getting points stripped”?

We’re not losing points. As far as I can tell, those numbers won’t change (except when we gain more points through achievements). The only change to the achievement point system is the addition of reward tokens, these crowns.

The confusion seems to be centered on the earning of crowns through achievements. Colin has already said that when those achievements besides daily and monthly start rewarding crowns as well, they’ll do so retroactively. The only possible exceptions will be infinitely repeatable achievements, most notably “Agent of Entropy.”

Even those “Agent of Entropy” achievement points won’t be lost. They’ll still be there! But if you’ve been trying to see how high you can take it, you simply may not receive as many crowns for them as you might hope.

+ token from daily/monthly not listed in there.

+ achievement tokens = 12 currencies in this game. No doubt all of the rewards will be account or soul bound on acquire right?

Do we have a collections tab for all these existing currencies? I know that thing from the dailies goes into my collections but how about all the rest of them?

Achievement points don’t need an inventory slot occupying token/coin, just deduct it from my AP balance and stop adding so many currencies.

I’m happy about all the other things and now we finally have something for the worthless achievement points that we’ve collected for no real reason.

I’m just getting a tad irritated by the amount of soul/account bound stuff that I don’t really have a use for that should be sellable.

Oh, and the ‘Advanced Harvesting Sickle (10)’: 10? seriously? it had better last for a long time. What can it harvest that an ORI sickle can’t ??? Am I going to get a precursor from cabbage? 1 Crown per daily means it will take me 3 days to afford 10 sickles that might afford me what benefit from any other sickle? will it guarantee me a T6 material EVERY TIME? At a stack of 10 – without possibility of stacking them properly like all the rest of course – this is still not worth it.
If I had to save up for a week to get a stack of 100 that had a 75% chance of a T6 it might be worth it but I highly doubt this will anywhere near that decent.

Can’t wait for the updates, love the game, just not interested in the pure RNG nature of it, that is not ‘uniquely Guild Wars 2’ by the way

Entropy should cap at no more than 5% your total achievement points. That way it’s never useless as you can keep going as you get other achievements, but it will permanently be the minority of your total points. This solution would be perfect because it will scale well with the growth of the game too, as more achievements are added.

My question is this: will these rewards be retroactive? I have already completed a significant amount of the available achievements (I have over 4000 points) and I would hope to receive the same rewards as some who does them after the new system is implemented. Does this sounds reasonable?

@ColinJohanson: So you’re saying that my 15 thousand points from Entropy arn’t going to be recognised?

Clearly discrimination against the salvaging underclass.

You’ll take our materials to build your ivory towers, but when it comes time for recognition it’s empty hands as per usual.

Edit: On a more serious note- can you try to get retention of the number of salvages (or any achievement) beyond the max cap as part of the new system.

The max can be 5 thousand, and no further rewards are given beyond that- but give the player a way to see how many times they’ve done the thing so that someone who has killed 500 thousand undead is able to differentiate between someone who has killed 5001.

And I appreciate you spending time with us to explain these things, as we’re all bound to get confused until we’ve seen it live.

Thank you for your responses, Colin. You’ve addressed about all of the remaining concerns I’ve had regarding how the new Dailies/Monthlies will work via everybody else’s questions here. As a roleplayer who’s holding off on Dungeons/WvW until my characters are “ready” for it story-wise, I’ve basically missed out on every single Monthly reward since release. The ability to just pick 4 out of 6 achievements to complete the Daily/Monthly sounds fantastic! Looking forward to the new updates!

The initial version will only be for daily/monthly achievements (this will not be retroactively rewarded.) Later you’ll see a system in place that rewards more expanded achievements points which will retroactively reward all achievements already earned, yes.

We’re still working out the details on the system, so that’s about as far into detail as I can go currently.

So I’m guessing eventually you’ll expand the system into other achievement areas?

Like you’ll get 1 token per mini-dungeon and jumping puzzle you complete? That would be a great way of encouraging people to go out and do them. And honestly if I were to put my money on “doing stuff to get early tokens” that’s what I’d do.

Thanks for the update Colin, I look forward to seeing how this turns out.

Though I do feel a need to state the obvious – daily rewards are easy to obtain. Monthly rewards are generally easy – potentially tedious but still easy.

What about the content which requires more work, and effort? This system is mentioned to reward players – but where the reward for the major content? Grenth, Balthazar, Melandru… even the dragons, offer little but a chest, where the majority of time you get a couple of blue/greens. Champions often give no loot, and blue at best. Vets generally drop worse, or atleast the same, as normal mobs. Even WvW biases rewards towards killing enemy invaders. A small team of 6 of us last night took a third of the battlegrounds by ourselves, no badges of honor were taken for 6-manning a keep… regardless of the time, co-ordination or understanding of the mechanics required to pull that off.

The community has been begging for months for a system where time, skill and effort invested directly correlate to the rewards received. This idea seems to go inline with the context and statements made in your blog post, but will it ever happen? Will players actually be rewarded for doing their best instead of running around low level zones to quickly finish daily rewards? I suppose that’s up to you to decide now.

None the less, thank you for the update and making an effort to connect with the community, it really is appreciated. Take care mate.

1.) is this (4/6) for dailies only or can we expect such a change for monthlies too?

2.) you indirectly mentioned that you’ll have to implement new dynamic events in order to make zones attractive again, since as it is now the same events spawn at certain locations over and over again. I really really like that you plan to add more events to the world… I’m just not sure if I should expect something like this in the next Feb. update; for me you mentioning this was more generally spoken.

You explained in an earlier article that an area with 100 events at release one year later would offer about 300 events then. What should we expect in that direction? I definitely see that you are trying to fix broken events now, so I’m not sure if the work on additional events has even started yet.

In yesterdays blogpost you explained how “live events” like the latest holiday-events were important for you. Are those the new events you were talking about during development and are those the new content instead of the stealth-implemented world-events?

I’m really confused about what to expect in GW2 since it seems your focus has shifted a bit in a new direction. Colin, could you clarify on this a bit, please? I appreciate your sincerity/openness lately.

Thank you for your time here, Colin.

I really like this idea that we will get tokens for daily and monthly achievements. I realize that you are working on a system that will reward players for the other achievements as well.

I have some concerns though. Will that be enough to bring people back to every part of our beautiful world?

I guess dailies could have several specific tasks we can choose from like “complete one event in this map” or “do this jumping puzzle” instead of “kill 60 enemies”. But then people will be playing just for the sake of the daily, 30 minutes a day, then back to dungeons.

People should be playing every part of the game because they are equally rewarding. I want to see whole guilds doing open world and dynamic events all over the world.

I know these thing are extremely difficult to balance out. I just hope you’re working on it.

Thanks for clarifying this for us Colin, we really appreciate it. It’s always awesome to see you devs communicating with us when you are all so busy. Also, I’m really glad to see you are focused on allowing us to play the game our way. I have high hopes for this aspect of the game.

On that note, will we see any improvements or adjustments to the world complete achievement? Currently, people who hate going into WvW, or people who hate PvE, are forced to go into those parts of the game to complete the achievement and get the rewards. Are there any plans for there to be a separate achievement for each area?

Am I the only one that sees this as a drip-feed to deviant behavior? GW2 is becoming more and more about explicit rewards rather than implicit, which seemed to go hand-in-hand with the spirit of the original manifesto.

“More rewarding” shouldn’t always equal a token, a badge, a point or an item.

I completely agree with you, but unfortunately the vast majority of players have been conditioned to want tangible rewards (as tangible as virtual rewards can be).

Personally, the experience is a good enough reward for me, but we live in a materialistic society and people want shinies.

Will we be given a spot to deposit all these tokens (maybe along with dungeon tokens) or are we expected to buy another bank slot to store these along with intermediate crafting items?

RIP in peace Robert

The infinite salvage point thing is in no way expensive unless you are doing something horribly wrong. You can buy stacks of valuable metal scraps and then buy a bunch of the 88c salvage kits and you will break even or even make a small profit by salvaging the whole stack. Then you sell what you salvaged and buy another stack. It certainly isn’t a good way to make money, but it is a 0 sum process, just takes time.

Remember the Halloween jumping puzzle? I hope I don’t end up having to do it again.

You won’t lose any achievement progress and will get full credit for all that kind of thing, absolutely. The only stuff that might need to be capped are achievements that extend infinitely that a handful of people have taken to extreme levels, we’ll discuss other options as well but I think if an effort to be transparent, it’s better to get out ahead of expectations so no one is surprised.

Colin, will we still be rewarded for the things like map completetion? I am wondering if I should wait to level the last 3 of my alts and get 100% until after? Will that sort of thing be retroactive also?

You will be yes, no reason to change your play habits in any way when it comes to anything other than if you’re collecting achievements points by progressing massively down an infinitely repeatable achievement. Map complete away!

We haven’t finalized a solution for those in that specific category, I just want to get out ahead and warn this probably isn’t the best use of your time if you were considering it.

Great! I am doing map completion now and have finished 26 zones in the last couple of weeks – was a bit concerned that it would actually hurt my ability to get the new achievements when they come out.

Don’t know if anyone asked in this thread but:

*How about some info about “precursors for crowns”. *

The conclusion we can get to from the current info is that we will get 40 crowns/month with zero crowns from current achievements (I.E. 6 100% characters and 3900 achiv pts) for a while (maybe even later than late February) and that precursors (if they will even be in the crown reward system) will cost over 80 crowns.

That means 2 more months of NOTHING – regarding legendaries – (and no hope to speed up the process – say, buying crowns or precursor related equivalent for a more reasonable amount of gold or dungeon tokens)

With a little luck we will get a precursor after 2 months of achievement farming (assuming it’s not 150 crowns or even 100 which its likely to be) at the cost of not having any crowns left for ascended gear or anything else AND just in time to not need then new and much more entertaining scavenger hunt which should happen around April). Am I close to what is going to happen? How close?

Ofc I could be wrong and there might be another way to get precursors that doesn’t involve crowns at all, but since it would have to already be in the making, I’d like to hear about it.

Totally unrelated but: WE NEED CHARACTER SPECIFIC KEY BINDS 2 months ago!!! Pretty pls?

More content limited to dailies? Dungeons, FoTM, nodes, and now this? In the future, please don’t add more content limiting us to once per day, because so many other things in the game right are limited once per day.

I’m also a bit skeptical. How will this bring players onto lower level areas and it be worth their time?

I’m not doubting the update, but just wondering if this is the update we’ve been waiting for to go back to Dredgehaunt Cliffs.
