Would you pay a subscription to play GW2?
Resident Thief
I have never played a game with a sub, and I never will. I would not have bought this game had it had a fee, and I would quit instantly if they put one up, despite loving this game a lot and being a big fan of Anet and GW. I don’t have that much money as it is.
I can’t bring myself to play it now even with no obligations…
Same here. An MMO subscription doesn’t cost much compared to most hobbies. I’d rather pay to play an MMO that respects your time than play a grindy f2p game.

Good thing GW2 is a non-grindy B2P game
No, never. See, there’s this thing called a reputation . . . and another thing called trust, and another called respect. I don’t have any of those things for Anet now.

Requiring PvP players to log in and spend half an hour on an activity every day for a month to acquire 1 max stat item out of 14 potential slots is f2p level game design. Of course the good thing about f2p is that I can’t quit, and will be back when ANet fixes said issue =)
Definitely not. Sure it is fun, but part of the appeal to me is being able to play whenever I have time. If I was paying, I would want to play more just so I feel like I’m getting my monies worth. Playing more than I should would probably burn me out quick and make me ignore more important things than video games in my life right now. Plus, the paying monthly for access to a game just doesn’t feel right to me. I know people that have put thousands into WoW and it amazes me that they have to keep paying to play. Don’t the devs think enough is enough? Probably, it is the publisher that doesn’t give 2 kittens about people though which is why they all tend to have very poor public opinion.
Ok, I’ve finally stopped laughing long enough to respond. NO.
But they gave me plenty of porous bones to compensate.
No, for as much hype as the manifesto video generated I don’t believe they even remotely lived up to it (most of the quotes in that video are either exaggerations or lies or idealistic/unrealistic aims they failed to meet) and I really can’t see myself paying to play GW2 for more than a month or two as even playing an alt you quickly realise the storyline overlaps far too quickly. Which isn’t helped by the fact that a lot of dev’s were tooting on features that that aren’t in game and don’t even look like they are on the horizon (esport stuff related) which just makes you think they released too early.
Probably not initially, box sales and all. But then like pretty much every MMO released in recent years it’d be looking at a ghost town 6 months into it and rumors of F2P would turn out around 9 months before happening at 12 months.
I keep saying that the game should be free, but posting on the forums should be microtransaction driven.
“Vibrant community” is watered down by the pay-one-troll-forever malcontents and shill accounts, and whining vocal minorities.
Related – if you haven’t used the gem store you are NOT playing as intended.
It may just be that your original statement was wrong.
Please try again.

Ermm….PVP players don’t benefit from ascended gear (it isn’t available in pvp)
I would pay a sub if it meant more frequent updates and more action against bots. Otherwise no.
No..
I do not P2P any game..why ESO doesn’t register to me
This game has so many issues paying would be insane..

Obviously you’re playing a very different version of GW2 to me then.

I’m starting to think they should pay us subs to play it with DR & zergville going on.
We’ve been awake since March 2007! Please help!
“GW2 the game with more rolls than roles!”
If they added a sub I’d quit. It’s not the cost that bothers me though. It’s the hassle and the mandatory nature of it that bothers me. Any sub games I’ve played in the past I feel like I’m wasting money if I don’t play.
yes i would gladly pay to play guild wars if certain conditions were met. first they would need to eliminate DR for one. second they would need to improve the drop rate by a certain amount and give me more reasons to kill champion/vet mobs rather than just a “Daily” reward. In other MMO’s killing stronger mobs you get rewarded with guaranteed loot, this lacks that. I would pay to play for sure. But we all know that DR, bad drop rates and the horrible mystic toilet are whats keeping GW alive because it will keep people paying money and playing/grinding. its what keeping their employees on payroll.
After the SWTOR fiasco I swore never to touch any subscription-based MMO ever again. So you can imagine that to me Guild Wars 2 was like a gift from the heavens.
Fojja – Vyxxi – Nymmra – Mymmra – Champion of Dwayna .. and more
Highly Over Powered Explorers [HOPE] – Desolation EU
No I would not.
My reasons.
We as customers have been repeatedly misled by the company that designed/owns this game. While I will say there is no grind if you are content with not having the best gear I will say I am unhappy with the November 15, 2012 patch that nerfed most every t6 crafting materials into the lower depths of Hades. This means that those who may want to craft a Legendary, their own gear or even just sell the materials on the TP they are in for a long hard road of disappointment.
The solution offered seems to be to buy Gems, buy gold and then buy mats from the TP. However RNG will still prevent many from being able to use the Mystic Toilet,..err Forge to craft what they need with any degree of reliability. Then of course even using the MF causes problems because so many materials are needed for a single item. Precursors and the Triforge Pendant come to mind.
I played WoW for 4 1/2 years and I had no issue paying a monthly subscription because I knew that if I did "X " I would receive “Y” or at the very least I could craft my own gear in a reliable manner without worrying about rare mats being subject to high RNG.
So my answer for now is an emphatic “NO” because I feel I have been lied to over and over and I only play this game presently out of sheer boredom. Once I find an MMO that I like I will go to that and never touch GW2 again.
I’ve also made it a point to steer my friends away from this game. I tell them to come to these forums and read for themselves and every one of them has stated they will not touch this game in it’s current state.
i think a lot of times people are overreacting at the cost of paying a monthly subscription for an MMO. Folks pay 15 dollars for a meal at their nearest restaurant or grab that crappy Mcdonlads value meal they shouldnt be eating for 7.99 or whatever i is. but complain about a $15 subscription. If you eliminate the unecessities and bad habits then $15 is really nothing. This is PER MONTH. People are ordering pizza every weekend or whatever and spend much more on a weekend for food/fun than a subscription cost
No.
But this isn’t a bearing on the game. I just don’t have the time to put into the game to justify the money spent per month.
Time is a river.
The door is ajar.
Nope, I don’t play sub games any more.
No. I don’t think GW2 and Anet have the quality level required to get me to pay a sub. If they fixed a myriad of things with the game, ironed out all the bugs and stepped it up a notch I’d consider it.
The only reason I and a lot of other players picked up Guild Wars 2 is because it doesn’t have monthly subscription fees. That’s the dumbest thing any game could have and if Guild Wars 2 puts that in, i’m out… /thread and stop putting ideas into ArenaNet’s head… :P
No, I don’t play enough to justify it + GW2 while it make change things up it is NOT a revolution in MMOs. If it was we would see the kitten grind system and the kitten factions and kitten out we would not see kittens period! I hate kittens!

That’s how I used to justify spending hundreds on WoW too. Then I realize that video game(virtual good) =/= food (essential goods). Also, there’s a lot of f2p or b2p alternatives but free 2 eat alternative doesn’t exist for food…
No, I wouldn’t. I don’t have enough to keep me busy to justify a regular fee.
No. Not because it sucks because I’m in love with the game, it’s because I have better things to spend my money on, especially since I don’t play every day and take breaks. It’s also one of the many reasons why I love ArenaNET and hate Blizzard. Whenever I played WoW I felt Blizzard was robbing me blind while I have never gotten this feeling with ANET no matter how many expansions/game I bought from them.

yes but if some people are spending their money on fast food its better to save it an pay a subscription instead because they are harming their body more by gettin fast food
Blizzard pays investors 80 cents on every dollar you give them for World of Warcraft. Think about that for a minute. 20 cents on the dollar pays for all the servers, all employee salaries, developement of patches, content updates and expansions.

Sitting on your backside 24/7 in front of a computer is more harmful to one’s body than the occasional drive-through meal.
I have no problems paying for a sub…..but…I wouldn’t do it for this game in its current state. Horrible RNG, DR, bad drop rates and many bugs that have been around since beta. Low level mobs dropping better stuff than high level mobs. If TESO gets even half of the above right, it has a wonderful opportunity if its the next triple A fantasy MMO.
I do not play subscription games. I think subscriptions are a rip off. If GW2 had a subscription, I wouldn’t play it.
Before November, yes I would have. Now, absolutely not. The January update is the only reason I’m spending time playing again at all.
Time spent playing > subscription. Quality game > monthly fee. Most “grown up” gamers I speak to feel this way.
I would never pay a subscription for any game.
If it started with a subscription and a sub was always in the plans, most likely yes… even if there was I’m getting more than my money’s worth. If they added a sub after promising sub-free… that would have been a bitter pill to swallow, but even then most likely.
Lord no, I don’t even play it now and it’s free. There would need to be a MASSIVE change in direction for me to even consider paying a sub for what GW2 has become.
Look I’m happy to pay for regular added content and progressive game play. Ilve payed subs in WoW, EvE, War, Swtor, DCUO and i have an active prem acc in WoTs. But I’ll be kittened if I’m gnna be nickle and dimed by Anet, for sub-standard, broken gameplay, then be expected to pay 15 bucks a month in the hopes that they may one day get it right.
If TESO gets even half of the above right, it has a wonderful opportunity if its the next triple A fantasy MMO.
Hey you should not mentioned other Upcoming Triple A fantasy mmos like TESO or Camelot Unchained in GW2 forums. Or it will be infracted.
But i totally agreed with you there.
No, I wouldn’t play a game with any subscription fee.
Absolutely I would pay for a subscription. This is, by far the best mmo ever to be released hands down.
Nah. This goes for any game by the way, not just GW2.
No, it’d need to work 5x less buggy for me to want to pay to play
“it doesn’t make you spend hours preparing to have fun, rather than having fun”
Guild missions say otherwise.
Gw2 broke its maneifesto and feels 2/3s done.
People keep in mind this game was DELAYED TWICE. It was suppoed to release back in 09 then 10 then 11 and finally released in 12.
If there were so many issues why not hold it back a year? And the voice acting really? Anyone in 10 could’ve told you to redue everything.
I would never pay a subscription for any game.
Pretty much the same. I’ve stopped playing subscription games a while ago. If this one had one, I wouldn’t play it either.
Nope. There isn’t any game on the market that justifies a recurring subscription in my book anymore. And likely won’t be any in the future after seeing what developers can do with other business models.

The manifesto was broken because GW2 attracted too many different kinds of players that thought they could find something their favorite mmorpg has (such as grind, “endgame”, etc.). Also, for me, the manifesto wasn’t broken because I feel Anet delivered.
I never payed a monthly fee (other than 360’s xbl) and will NEVER do. No matter how epic and amazing a game is, i will never bother with devs that ask me more money every month after i’ve payed their game+expansions.
If a MMO is worth wasting your time playing it then it is worth a sub. If it is not worth a sub then it is not worth wasting your time playing it.
Most here are full of it by the way. It is comical reading the reasons people give for not being willing to pay.

So if a game (any genre) is worth my time ‘like borderlands 2 for example’ i should send 15$ to their devs each month. Makes sense brah.
No. I dislike monthly fee deeply.

But if they love grind so much just return to their old mmo.
If they hate using strategy fine, just return then. In GW1 you really needed to think, in this game that is also true but its been dumbed down ALOT.
