In a sense, but it still goes against your initial post about a sub allowing dev’s to be more free to do what they want since everything doesn’t come down to how to get $$$ which in the case of eve at least isn’t the case.

Fair enough, but I never said it was a guarantee. Developers are free to totally kitten up their subscription based game. Developers are also free to totally kitten up their cash shop based game, but at the same time they’re always required to push the cash shop.

They’ve basically become slaves to the player base without the freedom to explore.

Is that a problem? We did mention that it’s the only MMO to show any net population growth over the very long term.

One wonders why certain bugs never get fixed, or other areas never get touched up; I guess it’s because developers are too busy “exploring.”

I never said it was or wasn’t but you’ve done a 180 on your initial stance

“I like subscriptions because then the developer has no need to view every little change through the prism of increasing cash shop sales.”

In the case of eve, sub’s don’t achieve what you’re saying they achieve since they are still having to view every little change through a prism of maintaining subs (either cash shop or subs, it’s just about maintaining $$$)

If this game was subscription based, would you be willing to pay to play this game monthly? Why or why not?

Do you think GW2 would have flopped if it was launched as a subscription game?

No. In it’s current state I would not pay a subscription for GW2. The main reasons for this are due to DR on farming, terrible RNG and mediocre group PvE options (No raids, unrewarding dungeons and chest drops). If rewards were granted like a subscription themepark then I would subscribe but I would not in it’s current grind state.

As for the last question, I don’t think GW2 would have failed in any case, I don’t think it has failed as B2P. There current business model is probably better than a subscription because it works like a casino slot machine, people continue to pump money into the gem store to convert gems to gold because it is too time consuming and luck based to improve your financial outcome without it. Subscription would yield a set amount but the numbers would have looked worse when the initial spike of population dipped.

I would, but I’d also play Don’t Starve.

I’m just thankful I don’t have to. The no sub ensures that I’ll be back frequently after my trysts with other games. If there was a sub, I’d only return after major expansions. Maybe.

Just curious—how many have said yes because thet have someone else (mom/dad) who foots the bill.

15$ is the price of :
- two beers in a capital city
- a dvd movie
- a bottle of wine
- a book
- a pizza menu

Not every player is an unemployed kid. Even the lowest salaries could afford such a sub. Even a kid who only has 30$ pocket money per month.
Better than that : if you add all the bills from someone whose hobbies are anything else than a MMO (which is a commitment for monthes), I’m pretty sure it blows out those 15$ / month (unless he spends his time watching TV, but uuugh).

I had my times when I didn’t play mmos at all, and all my free time was spent either going out (8$ beer here, 16$ dinner there, etc), either playing solo games (= at least 60$ per month).

But when I spent my evenings on MMOs (long time ago), my wallet has never been so happy. With my girlfriend at one time we even called sub-based MMOs “the hobby of the poor”.

Also once again, from a production budget standpoint, subs are bringing far more security, so far more freedom to creatives. With a cash shop (that is not P2W), you can’t sustain anything, there’s a constant risk of running low, so game evolution decisions have far more chances to be shifted towards “growing the userbase” and monetization (policy that has killed more than one franchise, latest one being Dead Space), rather than just being free to experiment new gamedesigns.

But once again, it’s a lost cause to try to explain to people that quality has a cost.

Nope this 6 year veteran of GW1 and of GW2 since launch would be gone in a heartbeat. The main appeals of GW is a great game without a subscription. If one of those two go away, I’m gone. It goes against everything this game stands for, they are already walking a fine line on the grind aspect, I sincerely hope that doesn’t go the wrong way either, toward more grind.

The option to even be the players’ kitten is more than most developers get these days. Meanwhile, they still have the option to make changes, but they’re forced to temper it with realistic expectations about how the playerbase might respond. Finally, their actions only reflect the confidence they lacked in the changes they made/were looking to make.

I would hardly call CCP’s penance indicative. Actually, it’s about as extraordinary a case as I would expect from a developer who has so far managed to successfully fight the one trend all MMOs face.

But back to your objection of my original point; yeah, all MMOs are about generating revenue, but subscription has the option to otherwise not remind you of it, whereas cash shop needs to always remind you that you have the option to spend.

Nah.

I’m ethically against paying a “monthly fee” for videogames.
First off, GW1 proved monthly fees are not necessary to keep a game alive, game sales are enough; this proves monthly fees are pure greed money-grabs.
Second, by playing a MMO I’m actually doing a service to the company as I help keeping the game alive; the more people plays, the higher the success of the game, its sales and expansions.
If we don’t play the game fails and you lose millions, so you better keep me playing.
Third, I don’t like to give anyone a constant access to my credit card; I’ve read of some really bad experiences and even frauds.

With that said though, I’m fine with paid major expansions.
It’s new content that I didn’t already pay for so it’s perfectly reasonable for it to be paid.
That is as long as it’s actually a major expansion; some games actually demand you pay for minimal updates such as horse armors and I laugh at those “DLCs”.
How much time could it take to make a couple models for horse armors and their textures?
Say it’s 500 bucks worth of modeling/texturing/programming, you sell it at 10 bucks and 1 mil people buy it… you just made 10mil out of 500 bucks. That’s ripping people off.

Absolutely not. GW 2 is a good game, but suffers from too many flaws to make it worth a subscription. IMO a game has to basically be problem-free for me to even consider paying a subscription and needs a buttload of content to justify it, and not just those lame tactics MMO’s often use to extend game time like stupidly slow leveling speed, endless grind, etc, etc. Not saying GW 2 has these features but just referring to those MMO’s I’ve either played or heard of.

If a MMO is worth wasting your time playing it then it is worth a sub. If it is not worth a sub then it is not worth wasting your time playing it.

Most here are full of it by the way. It is comical reading the reasons people give for not being willing to pay.

So if a game (any genre) is worth my time ‘like borderlands 2 for example’ i should send 15$ to their devs each month. Makes sense brah.

Games like that are not giving you free content. In fact, games of that type are charging for DLC these days. People here expect Anet to give them free content, free bug fixes, free basically everything. That will only last as long as the gem shop is making them enough cash. Comically in another thread I started a few were outraged at the thought of Anet putting content in the gem shop.

Bottom line: People want everything free, they want it now, and claim they will all leave if they do not get what they want. People lie.

You’ve got it backward; the constant free updates are meant to keep the playerbase engaged enough that they can suck a decent amount of revenue out of the fraction of the playerbase which is actually spending the money.

I don’t really get what everyone sees in those p2play mmo’s that’s lacking in GW2. I mean besides mounts there really isn’t anything all that different GW2 and other mmo’s ,perhaps my experience is different, but I’ve experienced bugs in the first few months every p2play mmo I’ve played and the content added isn’t really all that different for the first few months. I mean we got a whole zone, none of the other pay 2 play mmo’s that I’ve played has added something like that in the first few months ,and the holiday content was more than I’ve experienced in any other mmo I’ve played. I’m sure I haven’t had the experience in mmo’s that ya’ll have had but I just don’t see the difference, but then again I’ve never reached the level cap in any mmo I’ve played and I only have one character that is about to ding 80 in a few days. So please in enlighten me what is so great in those other mmo’s?

If Guild Wars was to change some of its policies and try to shake off a bit of their tunnel vision about the “perfect in game real economy”—-where they seem to protect this concept over and above the actual enjoyment of the player, then I would feel more prone to clunking down even more money —-given that my time was not wasted and I was still being “entertained” for my entertainment dollar.

You have this backwards, they protect the economy for the enjoyment of all players, not bar enjoyment from the players to protect the economy. 400g doesn’t mean anything when a stack of ori costs 2000g.

A. How much gold does the average player make? What is the minimum wage in the game?

B. How much gold does it take to outfit a level 80 player to be able to compete in the level 80 open world environment?

C. How many days wages does it take for him to outfit himself?

D. How many days would it take an average player to have the luxury of things like “Legendary” weapons?

Based on these would you say that the Guild Wars 2 economy is healthy at the moment?

If you do not believe that the economy is healthy, what in your opinion is the main contributor to this?

If you believe it is healthy, how do you justify that the wage earner is in direct competition with the game developer with regards to the price of goods, and that the market never actually sets its own price because it is constantly being manipulated by the company via DR and other game mechanics, not to mention that the company sells gold directly to players?

In the words of the generic thief NPCs in-game: “Ha! You’re kidding, right?”

This game is a lot of fun, don’t get me wrong. But when you set up a Pay-To-Play model, you are saying that you believe your game, your customer service, and your facilities are of the highest quality they could be, of such a high quality that you believe your game is worth paying regularly to continue playing.

However, GW2 as a game continues to suffer from massive balance and programming issues (culling continues to get worse, and the DR system punishes legitimate players more than botters). Its customer service can best be described as exceedingly poor, having banned players for sending gold to their friends using the Mail System, with an appeals system that doesn’t work nearly fast enough. And its forums are not consistent in how they dote out punishments, leading to some very nasty posts surviving whereas mild-mannered constructive posts are deleted because they are not constructive enough for that particular mod on that particular day.

If GW2 were running on a sub model, they would be giving SWTOR’s rapid descent a run for its money. Most people are only putting up with the disrespect and maltreatment because the game is a one-time buy. If GW2 intends to fix its image to the point that people would honestly say “yeah, I’d pay monthly for this”, it needs to fix its glaring problems first.

Remember when our developers talked about “strengthening the core game”?
How’d that work out for us so far?
Now let’s try some ideas that will really work.

I likely loose $15 simply falling out of my pocket a month. Up until recently I had a Netfix account that I never used – was playing games not watching movies.

The point here is not the cost – its what your getting for it.

Graphics – I like the artwork in this game. I’m more of an adventurer so I might spend more time just looking around and taking 3D screen shots then most.

Combat – Where on earth did they get this from? Old arcade games? Coming from single player games the combat has ALOT to be desired but I understand the limits of the animation and online environment.

Depth – Outside of food items, there really is no use for crafting in this game. Other games would allow you to craft weapons/armor/potions orders of magnitude more powerful than anything that could be bought/found in the game.

Sure, many games will have targets with high resistance to direct damage and high health bars, the idea here is that you need to make smart use of your skills. The problem is that direct DPS is the only valid skill in this game. We have professions that can set up combo fields and others that can make use of them but the duration and combined result is laughable compared to other professions direct damage DPS. So much for team work.

Speaking of team work – just about every FPS game I own has a ‘multiplayer’ mode also has in game voice comm. Your team having difficulty? Everyone says to ‘communicate’ and ‘work out a plan’ however without the in game tools to do that – not so much.

GW2 got great reviews and lots of awards for ‘pushing the envelope’ of mmo games. If this is ‘state of the art’ I shudder to think what the other mmo games are like and will likely stick to single player games in the future.

No, not worth the money that naturally falls out of my pocket each month.

Worth emphasizing. Most sub games consist of boring game play with no story, all aimed at getting you to the endgame dailies and treadmill that is designed to keep you p(l)aying. I know some people swear by this type of game, so gl and hf with it. It’s not for me, whereas I am finding GW2, warts and all, to be more fun than any other MMO I’ve played. If this game was subscription based, would you be willing to pay to play this game monthly? Why or why not?

Do you think GW2 would have flopped if it was launched as a subscription game?

I would absolutely NOT pay a subscription for this game based on it’s current features available.

1. If there were a lot more features added such as /follow command, macros and addons where players could customize their own UI, then I would consider it. But the way it is now, no chance in hell. This is just a minimum list.

2. If they fixed the animations so that if the player moved it would override the animation or if the player were moving and cast a skill that would launch a series of animations but instead keep moving then that would go a long way to having the game much more polished. In other words, movement should be the priority over any skill animation started as a result of a key press. The way it is now, the animation starts, it goes all the way to completion before the player can keep moving. If a player is moving, no animation should start that would otherwise place the player some where that he doesn’t intend to move towards unless an enemy caused the player to move towards some other direction.

Correct these two deficiencies and let everyone know the stance on multiboxing without leaving anything left up to interpretation and I would subscribe. There are some players that prefer to play an MMORPG by playing many accounts at the same time. By not having features that prevent this and by not telling the public the official stance on multiboxing (and yes I know of the posts on this forum that give a very vague reference to it being allowed), an entire group of players is restricted from playing the game.

I’ll answer 2 of those, since you seem to think asking binary questions about a massive grey area is healthy for discussion.

To “compete” in the 80 open world (with whom?) you can buy rares. A full set of rares is no more than 2g. It takes maybe a day to get 2g just by playing in the open world, then selling spoils on the TP.

Keep in mind you don’t have to buy from the TP, you can also craft this gear.

The fact that you think of income during play as “wages” and DR as a “pay cut” when drops are RNG (not a set wage) kind of colors your answer.

I’m not seeing a big difference between drops in this game and drops in WoW which I played for years. I saw 1 world drop epic during my 7 year stint, and very few pre-dungeon-level blues. I’ll compare these to exotics and rares respectively, and it’s about a 1-1 ratio for drop rate.

RNG is fine. I never notice DR because I play open world for 2 hours, WvW for 2 hours, maybe run a dungeon. I’m satisfied with drops, I’m satisfied with my not-quite full exotics, and I’m satisfied with the way the TP works. In what way is Anet in competition with me for the price of goods, and can you provide evidence to back up your statement that’s not pure speculation?

Pay a sub just to do dailies?

This is what I mean when I say that development took a dive when they started chasing the WoW-model.

No, I wouldn’t pay a subscription fee to play a game which relies on the daily crutch.

But if one of them needs to go, it’s the dailies.

Last night I’m in WvW and didn’t notice the daily reset, just kept playing. When I finally looked I had the daily 60% done.

Are there any MMOs out there without “too many flaws to make it worth a subscription”? Hell, by that definition WoW isn’t worth the money, but people enjoy it anyhow and fork over the cash because they do.

“Too many flaws”, btw, is simply an expression of opinion, not a statement of fact, and should be presented as such. WoW had a ridiculous number of bugs on release, but people paid and enjoyed it. GW2 is much less buggy for it’s age and more than worth the sub price were they to have had one considering the time spent in game relative to amount of money spent. Some would pay a sub for GW2, some wouldn’t, some would but refuse to admit it on the forums and weaken their forum PvP ratings. Regardless, it’s a great game.

I would prefer that GW2 was subscription model rather than “free” to play. It has been my experience that F2P games are unrewarding in-game and I believe this has to do with the way the game is monetized. I understand the move to F2P from a business standpoint, but F2P games don’t seem to be able to provide a sense of reward for play, which is one of the reasons we play games. Given the choice and my experience, I would always choose a subscription game when it came to my main MMO.

This daughter of Ascalon will not pay a sub fee for ANY game.

However, I gladly throw gems ANet’s way when 1) I want to show my support and approval for what they are doing with the game and 2) it fits in my budget

I really like the flexibility of not having a sub fee.

Would you mind clarifying a bit?

What is the sense of reward for play you get from a subscription that you don’t get from GW2?

Don’t even play without a sub with Ascended gear. This game has the most grind in it of any MMO I’ve played. Not fun to play, let alone pay for.

No I wouldn’t, but I have no problem throwing a bunch of cash for gems and the things I can get for them. I am sure that I spend more at the BLT than I would for a monthly sub fee, so again, no I would not pay a monthly fee.

I love the Angry Joe review where he goes into a game store and the clerk tries to sell him WoW as best the mmo.

That’ll be $60 then sir.
That’’ll be 15 more dollars by the way
Uh 15 more dollars sir
That’ll be fifteen dollars!
15 dollars…
15 dollars!
Fifteen dollars
$15
That’ll be 15 dollars!

(Angry Joe punches out the clerk’s lights)

That would pay for 9 months of gameplay, which (going from release date) included 3 new dungeons, 1 new tier of raiding, the pvp honor system, 3 battlegrounds and an awesome glitch that killed thousands of npcs (corrupted blood from ZG)

I paid for that, and I have no regrets. It was money very well spent, and even if content stopped there, there would still be more to do than in GW2.

This kind of thinking baffles me. You are so offended at the prospect of spending 15 dollars a month for access to a game with growing content, but will gladly through money at the screen so you can look pretty. The amount of people that flat out say they spend more than 15 a month on gems but would denounce Anet from the mountaintops if they had to pay a sub fee is mind numbing.

If there is so much to do, why do you spend your time hanging around the GW2 forums, hmmm?

I hear those dungeon and LFR queues are getting mighty long over there in pandaland, that wouldn’t have anything to do with it, now would it?
