What’s the point of getting experience past 80? I don’t get anything for it. I’m doing map completion and have dinged 80 at least twice on my 6 characters and nothing to show for it. Would be nice to get something….

You will…once HoT is released; if, of course, you have or will purchase it. M(astery)XP to further your Mastery tracks.

Good luck.

When the expansion hits, every time you level up you will gain a mastery point.

There is little incentive for the developers to add something to levelling up now, as that will cause more frustration when it changes with the expansions’ release and players then complain that they don’t get “x” from levelling up.

Yah. The game is in between the old exp system and the new mastery system. When it converts over you’ll start getting something for leveling again.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

You do not get Spirit Shards. You don’t get Mastery Points, either, but unlock a Mastery track where you will be able to spend Mastery Points obtained elsewhere.

Forgive me, I guess I’m mistaken. I assumed that since Tomes of Knowledge now give level 80s Spirit Shards, that you get them for leveling as well.

I forgive you. ^^

A natural mistake though. They made the tomes give shards since they used to level and give a skill point after level 80, so they kept that part of it.

So if XP is used to buy masteries in HoT, does that mean that all the old players who have a stack of 100 tomes sitting around will simply instantly be maxed out?

I haven’t read anywhere that tomes will be giving masteries as opposed to Spirit Shards upon use. So I doubt it.

The way it is working in the beta is that you choose a mastery track to level, and then all the experience you earn goes to levelling that mastery track. Once enough is accrued, you earn that mastery. I don’t think tomes will be able to help accrue that type of experience for masteries to prevent people from instantly completing every mastery. Instead, it will likely remain as it is, in that using a tome will grant a Spirit Shard at 80.

no. No items or food that gives exp will advance mastery tracks. It’s only advanced by doing content.

http://www.zam.com/story.html?story=35818&storypage=2
“The masteries seen in the demo are just the tip of what masteries will be available at launch, and the team will have more surprises for players. We wanted to know if all those consumables, like Tomes of Knowledge and Writs of Experience, would help players unlock all of these masteries faster. The short answer is that they won’t. The experience bar is going away and is being replaced by the mastery training bar. This training bar is in no way tied to experience, but fills up by going out and doing stuff in the world. So any item that gives you experience won’t help you train masteries.”

No because tomes at 80 only buy you Spirit Shards which has nothing to do with the mastery system.

It’s still there at the moment because we use to get skill points when we level past 80 and the mastery system hasn’t rolled out yet.

We are heroes. This is what we do!

XP past 80…….

There isn’t any reward for xp past 80 it’s just a bunch of pretty numbers you can make bigger by using potions from the gem store or from achievement rewards.

It isn’t right and we’re getting the short stick but as usual the shills jump in and bury the problem behind rhetoric.

So add this post to the many times before this same question has been asked and maybe they will ad a “beating a dead horse” task to the daily that rewards an xp potion only usable by level 80 toons……. oh wait, that already exists!

We all have differing viewpoints on this issue and I agree with the OP that it would be nice to get something for XP but I fear that this will be added to the many times before this same question has been asked.

Tested this in Beta this weekend, no dice. Tomes did not add mastery points they only gave spirit shards.
