add 30 new skills per class in xpac
Yea. And also add 50 new dungeons and ten more classes.
Lol jking but 30 seems a little excessive. What do others think?
So about 2 that are usable then? Vomiting skills at players is not going to fix a thing its just going to add in a lot of pointless skills or worst yet skill that simply out do old skills. Time is what good skill fixes and new skills needs and time is something that is on GW2 side. I am not sure if there needs to even be a feeling of needed rush.
So i am saying work with old skills > new skills all the time.

I diagree. I seen many of new MMos and old with cool ability ideas that havnt been done in GW2 yet as a class skill. So I am sure we can have 30 more unique class skills that are useful and not useless like in GW1. Most of the GW1 skills were made useless because of the setbacks that many of the skills in GW1 had. GW2 doesnt need to do that, as proven by other MMOs.

I don’t know. It seems like a lot.
How about you show us an example of 2 new weapon sets (10 skills), 6 utilities, and 2 elites for any class that isn’t redundant? It could help us understand why you think 30 isn’t too much.

There. If I can come up with 20 skills for a single class on my own, I am sure Anet with a team of minds can come up with more than that.

that was one class randomly I picked.
I play many classes and want new skills on all of them. I was just showing how I can come up with 15+ new skill ideas on my own, so I am sure a team of developers can come up with much more for the other classes that arent watered down and useless.

Did they announce any expansion? Or are they sticking to providing " expansion type content in Living story"?
As long as they go with the latter, you can expect 0 new skills, 0 new classes, and 0 new weapons.

They can’t balance so many skills and lag will be bigger from more skills, you know “engine limitation”.
If ever they’ll make new skills those will be clones of existing ones or useless skills.
New weapons? I don’t think so, 2 years and no information about a real update.

And Balance is something that will never be and never was 100%. So why should that be something that hold future skills back from being added?

Because rangers are lacking in many areas of the game and need some serious buffs, and mesmers are so broken that they’re getting kitten near useless aside from PU roaming or utilitybotting in WvW?
Not to mention conditions being a total trainwreck in PvE.
Let’s at least get a semblance of balance for the things we have first before asking for more, eh?
Catorii | Lustre Delacroix | Catorii Desmarais | Synalie
I really hope they do not do this. And based on the reason’s why they made the skill system it is today, they will not be doing this.
Do you know the stated reason why ANet moved away from the skill system they had in Guild Wars 1 to what they used in Guild Wars 2?
Quite Simple – in the process of working on each expansion for GW1 (Factions & Nightfall) they were finding it impossible to fairly, easily and decently balance each and every class with the addition of 20-30+ new skills. Each expansion added not only 2 new classes (apart from GW:EotN), but a plethora of new skills for the existing classes – and they had to attempt to balance both the new classes and new skills so they had some semblance of balance between each expansion.
And you know what? – They stunk at it. GW1 after Factions was an ungodly mess of unbalanced skills and classes, which just got worse after Nightfall got released. And lets not talk about PvE skills from Eye of the North (the final non-standalone expansion, the other 2 were stand-alone expansions) in which they threw any semblance of balance out the window.
So no, lets not toss balance out the window and add a stupid high number of new skills that make a lot of current skills pointless, weak, etc. Last thing we need is even MORE stupid imbalance in the game… we have enough of this problem as it stands. I’d much rather they spend the time fixing the skills we already have, as well as improving the AI on existing mobs so fights are more interesting rather than the boring all-dps meta we have now (where only a select selection of skills actually gets used anyways)
Finally – please tell me any MMO which has an expansion which adds 20-30+ skills per class/profession? Because apart from GW1 Factions, Nightfall & EotN I can’t think of any.
- WoW? Nope, it adds like 5 skills per class max per expansion
- SW:TOR? Nope, it added 3 skills per class in it’s 1 expansion.
- Eve Online? Nope.
- STO? Nope
- Rift? Nope
They are already having hard time making a single usable skill. What makes you think theyre capable of making 30 new skills?
Thats not how engine work. Its not a bigger load. Its the same.
And Balance is something that will never be and never was 100%.
This is correct.
So why should that be something that hold future skills back from being added?
This is incorrect. There’s no reason to add new skills unless they are truly distinct and serve a unique purpose. Most of the skills I’ve seen suggested are just slight variations of skills that already exist. Many of the suggested skills are also incredibly overpowered. A 12-second knockdown that does aoe damage? Warriors already have Stomp and Earthshaker…
If you add a new skill called “Slam” and it is effectively the same as Earthshaker, then either “Slam” is weaker and useless, or you render Earthshaker obsolete by making Slam stronger. So you end up with the same number of skills in the end which makes the entire endeavor pointless.
One new skill per skill type (e.g. for warriors: one shout, one banner, one stance, etc), one new elite, and one new weapon (with boosting trait) would be a reasonable expectation per profession in an expansion.
Alternately, an entirely new skill type per profession with four skills and a trait to boost them.
I think either of these is a reasonable expectation for an expansion, and I would very much like to see something on this scale delivered via living world.
Priorities, what to do?
Spend hours with dye
One thing that I have kinda wondered whether it is feasible or not is to grant certain off hand weapons a toggle-able mode, to improve their attraction to players. For example, shields are largely ignored by the two classes you would most expect to play them, Guardians and Warriors. Excepting very niche circumstances, like Fractals where SoA is a must.
Things to ponder
- Could a shield have a swappable defensive and offensive mode? In all cases, I suggest a reduced cool down as mode swapping would be like attunement swapping, and also to incorporate the cool down for weapon swapping. So some of the 30 – 40s cool downs would come down to some thing like 15 – 20s for example.
Examples
For Warriors
Offensive mode
#Shield bash – same functionality as shield bash now
#Shield slash – If you’ve seen 300 where the Spartans chopped the Persians in the throat or chest, you’ll know what I mean. Might do something like apply weaken or vulnerability, for example
Defensive mode
#Shield stance – as it is now, and only affects melee attacks
#Incoming! – Similar to shield stance but only blocks projectile attacks. There was a similar skill in GW1 that massively raised armour against ranged attacks or it might have blocked the next ranged attack, I forget. It was a paragon skill.
For Guardians
Defensive mode
- Same skills as now
Offensive mode
- Shield swipe – interrupts your target and blinds them
- Inspire allies – beat your weapon against your shield inspiring your allies and grant fury and might.
Or other such things…
More =/= Better
@ Azrael
Those are some good ideas. I think you could put that under a class mechanic. Give Warriors F2 and F3 “postures” that change the behavior of weapon skills.
For guardians you could do a similar thing with traits by having the skill be defensive while virtues are on passive and change to offensive when virtues are on cooldown. For example a guardian has normal shield skills, but when he activates Virtue of Courage, it changes the shield skills to offensive ones. This functionality would come from a GM trait.
Of course now that I write it, it sounds a lot like Ele attunements…
Yea. And also add 50 new dungeons and ten more classes.
Lol jking but 30 seems a little excessive. What do others think?
We got about 200 new skills in the Guild Wars expansions, so we should get the same here in ANet refuses to do and expansion . 30 * 8 is 240, so that’s pretty high, but I can imagine demanding 20.
The idea’s not bad, but I think the number should be closer to 10 per class.
- 2 or 3 new weapons (5 new weapon skills) (new to the class, does not have to be a completely new weapon) EX: Necro gets Torch, Mace and Schythe.
- 3 new utility skills
- 1 new racial skill
1 new Elite
No reason for an expansion pack….just a feature pack.

That’s in tomorrow’s patch right?
Balancing and new skill creation is not in our control. Thank the gods!!!
You’ll be lucky to get 1 skill per class due to how much work they have to do with creating, testing, and balancing it.

I’m not referring to balance as the amount of skills of a certain type available when compared to other types. Nor am I referring to usage in any way.

The reason a lot of them go unused is because they aren’t as good as the other skills. In other words, they are unbalanced. I know you aren’t talking about usage, but usage is a good way to see if a skill is over powered, under powered or balanced.
Anet were very proud that they were able to release one healing skill per profession in two years. I don’t think 30 new skills are coming anytime soon.
Some of those are too OP, but I like his enthusiasm.
I think 20 skills per class is not throwing the ball out of the park. The main problem is that some skills, although inocent, could potencially make broken combos. That’s why balance is such a delicate process. More skills are coming, when they’re ready ©.
GW2 doesn’t need an abundance of skills. It just needs to refine the ones it has, and add several more, allowing us to switch them out like our utility skills. This is how it is in GW1, and it’s also slightly this way in GW2 with engineer kits.
Yeesh, how many of the existing skills and traits for even viable? Are people even using 50% of the traits out there? Are we even using 50% of the weapon types for each class?
Yeesh, how many of the existing skills and traits for even viable? Are people even using 50% of the traits out there? Are we even using 50% of the weapon types for each class?
Point being? Even if new skills/traits were added, you’d still have the meta builds with people excluding the same percentage.
You can make any build to use any of the existing skills/traits. Will it be optimal? Probably not. But that’s the thing with optimal builds. You’re not going to have many optimal builds that use all of the skills/traits.
(edited by Ayrilana.1396)
My point is that why add new skills/traits when we desperately need to fix the olds ones?
Certain weapons, traits, and skills are completely worthless for very obvious reasons. Rather than adding more useless clutter, how about bringing them up to par so we actually have to make choices on how we build our characters?
I think this is too much to ask for. Even GW1 with its plethora of skills had redundant or simply copied ones (especially Factions with renamed Prophecies skills . . .).
Your created Elites don’t look like they work well with anything, or just seem a tad overpowered when looked at as “now let’s use this in WvW for instance” . . . especially “March With Me”. It’s either too awesome (charge instantly to the top of a wall, immediately drop three people on an antipersonnel siege weapon instead of needing to fight to it, chain it with two other warriors to pretty much never allow anyone to escape…) or if those are prevented, it’s not that useful.
Not to mention “Everything is a Weapon” summoning environmental weapons . . . is problematic. First off, it steps slightly on the toes of a ranger who bothers to use Forage. Secondly, it majorly steps on a thief who actively steals since it means a warrior can do it too, even if only random.
I don’t think your ideas of new skills are all that good to add to the game, for the sake of the game.

What I find interesting is that the OP, wasn’t asking for anything near what Guild Wars had. Guild Wars was made for lower end machines than the lowest end available for us today, and yet managed fine with hundreds of skills.
We have MMO’s today that also are doing fine with hundreds of skills.
For some reason, there are players that like Gw2 and feel that to ask for more from Anet is unreasonable… either that they cannot give us more skills, or that we need to accept that This is easier for them.
I do not think that Gw2 should be about what is easy for Anet. If Anet could do it with Guild Wars they CAN do it with gw2. It just seems to me that a Lot of players are perfectly happy giving Anet an out.
if other MMO’s can do it today, gw2 can do it today. But for some reason a lot of players are perfectly content with how low the bar is for gw2.

I play MTG, believe me when I say I’ve seen the absolute worst when it comes to “add moar stuff” just because it can be done instead of adding things players would actually use.
Quality > quantity.
Give me 5 awesome skills I have to choose three of, and not three painfully obvious chooses, and I’ll be happy.

On the flip side, it’s a tough thing to continue to make quality skills in amounts. Again, MTG barely managed this during its earlier years without going right into Power Creep. (And it gleefully marched off the cliff a few times unawares.)

But seriously..Leather ..needs…work!
