Set a man on fire, and he’ll be warm the rest of his life.
– Unknown Fire Elementalist
I hit upon an armor combo today, and liked the looks so well that I just had to share it.
So many of the medium armor pieces look bulky, and trenchcoats have never seemed “Rangery” to me. Certainly not for a female Sylvari. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that one of the ugliest armor sets (my opinion) had a component that filled out my designs very well.
After much item previewing, I stumbled across the Aetherblade Leggings. Normally, they are barely visible when worn as a set. But they happen to mesh perfectly with the Krytan Jerkin to give a “long shirt with pants” look to my Ranger. The Privateer Shoulders turn the vest from a sleeveless “biker” look into that Sylvan look I was shooting for.
Color me surprised; I found treasure hidden amongst that goofy Steam Punk stuff. What’s next… something from one of the Zodiac sets? Anyhow, I think the result is trim and clean. Much more suited to a female Sylvari Ranger than a pirate costume.
Wait….is that….Link!?

Nah man, clearly it’s a gender-bent Zelda. Everyone knows Zelda is the hero of Hyrule.
And Zelda is pretty cool, he doesn’t wear tranchcoats.
Don’t have the pointy hat. (Or sword and shield). Breanna Banana is a “traditional” bow Ranger for the most part.

Gotcha. Either way it looks awesome!
I just completed my Daily Dodger achievement. Now I can tumble out of the way instead of stumble on my coat.
Seriously… I can’t think of any traditional Ranger or Thief who wears a trenchcoat. A cape/cloak sometimes, but not a trenchcoat. Seems reasonable for Engineers, perhaps, but I’m wracking my brain and can’t come up with any “traditional” Engineer figures in the world of fiction/fantasy.
Grats! Nice to see different looks. I spend ages trying to get my guys and girls to look different and I generally have to rely on cultural armour for it.
And I don’t mind the odd use of overcoat since its cold in them thar Shiverpeaks but there are just so many of them. There’s a reason why stolid sameness is the spice of life is not a saying.
(And I can’t believe you called her Breanna Banana!)

But but but.. Neo in the matrix is clearly an Engineer/Thief because he’s dual wielding pistols and wearing a tranchcoat.
Is the jacket from the personal story? I looked for “Krytan Jerkin” like it said in your post and nothing popped up.

Van Helsing strikes me as an engineer type. I thought he had a trench coat as well. But yeah I cant really think of anyone that fits into the “engineer” trope. Although there is more of the “engineer” idea that seems to be more suited to D&D, or Whitewolf games.

Krytan is a medium gem store armor skin. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Krytan_Medium_Armor_Skin
Very nice find OP. Don’t think I’ve seen anyone else using it either. (It will be the new Meta soon) ^^

LOOK, we now have “Peter Pan” in the game, who needs Mr. T. Sorry, had to say it. -LOL

nice! great work OP. It looks great.
From my Ranger/Sylvari looks post (I have since changed the colors from yellow to a bit more orange, and included that on the shoulders):
I don’t mind the odd use of overcoat since its cold in them thar Shiverpeaks.

Breanna is named for my Niece
And her GW2 namesake is prepared for the Shiverpeaks as well, with a little help from some longer gloves and warm, bushy cultural shoulders:

Fair enough then
And yeah, those gloves and shoulders should help a bit. A good ranger is always prepared.
Too bad the male equivalent is a trenchcoat!

I wasn’t going to say anything before but I’d really like the male version for one of my females. It would really suit one of them.
Oh yeah, that should look great on my female Charr, too! … oh, wait… no it doesn’t. Tail-clipping trenchcoat. Again. sigh

Soooo, if there are non Trenchcoat options then why can’t ANet make more of them. I remember some vague explanation about long coats being needed (can’t remember the quote). Doesn’t this prove that the long coats are not needed? This makes ANet’s refusal to make more look like stubbornness on their part.
Yes, tired of trench coats. Been using variations of the Krytan top with various bottoms for some time.
Who needs pants anyway? Pistol Shield Engineer.
Haha, I’ve seen your character in game and my reaction was whaaaaaaa. Love it +9001
Very nice style!
The game needs way more armor skins that doesn’t involve burning your wallet.
More leather pieces that are not kitten trenchcoats, more heavy leggings that are not tassets, more light pants that are not kilts.
Like, seriously. You can’t just do that. Add more skins, armor and weapon customization is probably one of the biggest things players care about, put your artists and modelers to work, and scatter new skins all over lower level zones, not just the kittening gemstore.
Seriously, the low level newcomers will love it.
Same outfit, different color scheme. I kinda like this one better. It looks more “serious” with the leather top and less like Sir Peter of Pan.
(I had done Tequatl earlier, and this attempt killed her even faster. So don’t worry… I wasn’t hurting them by not participating. In fact, I’m certain my /cheers on the sideline really turned the tide.)
I previewed her as a male in the Total Makeover Kit… no changes other than sex. I think I came up with an Orc race.

Check my post pic above. Fem Orc at the ready.

Wait… is she seriously pantsless? where are her petal panties? How’d you do thaaat?

Looks BORG to me, what with the techie monocle and all. Or perhaps the mythical “BorgFrogOrc”.

Tier 3 Cultural armor. (It’s what Caithe wears. Or doesn’t…)

Last I checked goggles aren’t a monocle.
It would be nice if Anet would introduce ore medium armor coats THAT AINT TRENCHCOATS WITH FREAKIN’ DAGGERS STICKING OUT ALL OVER THEM! Not to mention headgear that aint stupid masks.
FYI Anet; there’s THREE medium armor classes, not just thieves.
From my Ranger/Sylvari looks post (I have since changed the colors from yellow to a bit more orange, and included that on the shoulders):
wow i really like that look, can you elaborate a bit on what the different pieces are, pls.

if light armor legs were kilts, i’d like them more, they are currently dresses XD
Last I checked goggles aren’t a monocle.
Apologies. Her head is in profile, and it looked like my Asuran Engineer’s eyepiece. Couldn’t tell it covered both of her eyes.
EDIT: Non-skirt/non-trenchcoat here. But it is a butt cape. Not bad, but once again you gotta go to cultural armor to get away from those things a little.
(edited by Hamfast.8719)
A gem-store item sadly.
Yeah. Aside from the Sneakthief armor, the only other Medium armor set I’ve found that has no skirt/trenchcoat for the leggings is the Strider gemstore armor. (I don’t regret buying it though. It looks absolutely amazing on my female Norn Ranger. )
Yes, there are plenty of pants and several miniskirts. Just darned few TOPS for the Medium armors that don’t come way down to the knees (or further), covering up that legwear.
I picture thieves and Rangers as needing to be somewhat nimble most of the time. Most of the selections we have look bulky and burdensome. Coats can be flashy, but they don’t really fit two of our three Professions.
Not bad at all OP. Very nice actually.
Very, very happy to see a thread discussing this. Thanks all.
Sylvari T2 Cultural has a tailcoat that works reasonably well. It still flaps around a bit, but the two ‘tails’ taper in-line with the legs (making the effect look almost like no coat).
For a few silver its not bad. I’ve combined it with T2 leggings and TA boots (T2 and T1 boots weren’t matching well on the color schemes for some reason). But due to that I’ll probably keep any further Medium classes to Sylvari (I already have Engi, can’t play Thief due to my wrists, so just Ranger to try again).
Yep! I hated the trench coat look too so i used the same chest piece OP. Plus it suited my Engie’s Harley Quin look perfectly. Wish there were more options like this to be honest.
Took me alot of time to get up with a good look for my charr engineer, but ultimately made it, and i’m quite happy with the result…
And know what you’ll say: trenchcoat (can hardly find anything thats not one, lets be honest, poor charrs don’t have much to say when it comes to medium armors)…
But look! No tail clipping!
And yes, this is a pop gun.
Included no-backpack version.
Gas Mask helmet (living story Season 1/laurel vendor)
Rubicon Shoulderpads (karma/fractals)
Forgeman Jacket (Sorrow’s Embrace dungeon medium armor)
Fused Gauntlets (medium version; living story season 1/laurel vendor)
Studded Pants (cheap on TP, personal story, crafting?)
Forgeman Boots (Sorrow’s Embrace dungeon medium armor)
Note that forgeman gloves, rubicon gloves or sneakthief gloves fit quite nicely too.

No trench coats …
human ranger and sylvari thief
Lol the Kryta top sees a lot of play for medium. Here’s what I’m working on for my Norn thief. Still don’t have the pants…mainly because I’ve been avoiding the storyline on her. Haha.
Blast from the past.
With Shing jea pants and gloves if I recall my skins correctly. They are Factions skins at the very least haha.
Blast from the past.
Ahh… thank goodness the massive, ugly one-shoulder decorations that all GW1 Ranger armors seemed to sport are optional in GW2.
