Wanted to know before making our first toons on if we have to pick the same race and profession to start out in the same area.

We want to be able to team up from the start. (not travel to find each other)

Race decides where you start, but you can hit the portals pretty easily to meet up after the quick tutorial, if you want to play different races.

You could pick different races and travel to find each other; it would take 3-5 minutes to meet up at the absolute most, and you’d only be going through cities, so you wouldn’t encounter anything that could make the trip difficult.

Party up as soon as you get out of the starter instance and you’ll be able to see each other’s blue dots on the main map. That will help to find each other. Decide where you want to meet and you can ask in map chat how to get there.

You might consider making the same race (and character creation choices) to enable you to choose the same options in the Personal Story with no consequences.

You can play PS with different races (twice), but make sure to never accept the other’s progress, if you want to stay on your own (separate) storyline.

once you finish the starter instance. Anet will dump you right outside the entrance to your race’s capital city. simply go into your capital city, and go to the asura portal (there is a big purple switly icon on your map and mini map to find this). Walk through the Asura Portal will leave you in the Asura Gate hub in Lion’s arch (the gate hub has 5 gates, one for each race’s capital city) then you can choose where you want to go from there.

the negative of course, is that if you play the personal story together, as different races, one of you will NOT see your personal story because of how credit is given.

the workaraound for the personal story… is to make sure one of you DON"T accept credit for the other person’s story (that means you won’t get XP or loot) and then go play the story you didn’t do.

You can also both just hit the “PVP” button up top (it’s the crossed swords icon), and walk across to Lion’s Arch, and meet up there, then go pick a starter city to go to. There are portals to all the cities roughly in the middle of Lion’s Arch

Then again, my husband and I almost always pair up with the same races, then swap up who our mains are once we hit 80 on different characters.

No PVP button when starting out

If you want to play the personal story together and start playing together right away, making two characters of the same race would be the best option.

I would advise to NOT get two of the same race.
Each should pick a race they favor most to, on their own, experience the personal stories that differ till about lvl 60.
As already mentioned for the normal leveling and open world experience it´s trivial to come to the other´s map by entering the LA portals.

It´s like with beds.
Everybody should have his/her own and for fun-times you chose one of them.

^Except for the fact that accepting another’s progression in the Personal Story (which many players do) then places the character accepting said progress on a different story track (such as Vigil, instead of Order of Whispers), and there is no going back, for that particular arc.

Just wanting to give a heads-up before doing so, to avoid that irreversible consequence. If they want to play the story together, once, rather than twice…or have no worries about being vigilant about accepting progress, the same race is preferable. If not, then different races would be fine.

In all seriousness, As soon as you finish the tutorial you could meet in Lion’s Arch and everything from there is do-able. You don’t even have to do each other’s stories, yours will instantly complete as soon as you assist your spouse with theirs of the same level.

You’re saying that if you are a Charr and you assist with an Asuran personal story, your Charr personal story will then complete also?

Sorry, I need to make a correction there:

You get a prompt asking if you want to accept their personal story completion. If you click yes, your equivalent step autocompletes as long as you have completed the step previously.

I don’t think it will do it for the first sections of the personal story for different races though. They aren’t the same and the choices aren’t the same.

Far as I know, it still does it for racial story yes. Each step has an equivalent stage no matter what your race is.

It should be noted that if you do not want to chose the same Order then you must not accept the progress because if you do the game will switch your order to match the other person. That means every step will need to be done twice.

Ive never seen a thread about it and I think someone would complain if they helped out on a different race and their story line advanced because they accepted it so they never got to see it.

Edit: the one on the order I’ve seen before but that might be a special case because it is an identical decision across all the races.
