do you think this game is fun
Im ashamd that Ive had over 1200 hours of fun.
Of course they released it too early. I’ve yet to see an MMO in the last five years that hasn’t come out too early. That’s because no matter what you do, at some point you have to start earning an income.
I’ve said this before on many threads, that I believe Anet launched this game to beat MoP to market. It wasn’t a bad move. Probably made them a lot of money. They’ve been playing catch up ever since.
If this was the only MMO forced to launch before it was completely finished, it would be a travesty, but it’s not. Because MMOs cost so much money to make and take so much time that eventually you have to bite the bullet and get it out there.
As usual, you misrepresent my position.
I didn’t say it had to be completely finished. There’s a wide swath of possibilities between underdeveloped and completely polished.
I didn’t buy this game because it’s relatively better than all the others; relatively better can still be poor overall. I bought it because I expected it to meet some set of criteria that exists regardless of the quality of current MMOs on the market.
Me. I’ll just hang out here and wait for the fixes.
That’s the problem. You’re asking us to trust that everything will work out. I don’t see how they can make significant improvements without a significant overhaul of many of the core mechanics. And you’ve already said in other threads you don’t see those kinds of changes occurring.
I didn’t misrepresent you. I disagree with you. The game was playable, it was buggy. If you don’t like the core mechanics, you don’t like them, and that’s fine. It doesn’t, however, make those core mechanics bad. It makes them not your thing.
I have very little problem with the core mechanics of this game and I had very little problem with them at launch. You’re 100% right. If you don’t like the core mechanics of a game, it’s not going to change. I didn’t like the trinity in any game I’ve played. That’s a core mechanic. It’s not going to change. So if I play trinity games, I don’t go to the forums of those games and complain about the trinity, because there’s not much point. I knew it would be there from the beginning.
As for expecting a game to launch more complete more better than it’s counterparts, well, you can expect that. But it’s not a reasonable expectation. The industry is how it is for a reason. The combination of fan pressure for the game to come out, investor pressure for the game to come out, timing of other games…given that no MMO is going to be in a good place when it launches, it makes sense to launch in window with no competition. If you owned the company, you’d do the same thing. Because it’s your money and your investment.
Waiting till the game is more ready isn’t always the best thing for the game. And the higher the overhead of a business, the more risk involved. This is a big risk investment for people and business decisions have to be part of the equation.
This game needs WoW raids + Rift dimensions = perfection
Rift didn’t have dimensions at launch and I’m pretty sure WoW didn’t have a raid. Content takes time. The core of the game is finally working and now they can start adding stuff, in the same way they added the fractals. Again, all it takes is time.
But they said there’s no more content coming….so?
huh?
This game was awesome 1-80. Absolute perfection in my opinion. Then I bought some gems, turn it into gold, bought all exotic Bezerker level 80 gear and realized there’s nothing to do because I had the gear I would have been grinding for.
The jumping puzzles (very fun), map completion (cool), alt leveling (a breeze) and skin collecting is stuff you do on OFF RAID NIGHTS…but this game has no raiding. And there’s no new contents planned for this game. So, let’s rename it Jumping Wars and put it back on the shelf.
P.S. I’m a girl and I don’t even care about the skins. I bought the Order of Whispers gear and was very happy with that.
What makes you think there’s no new content coming?
The developers said so.
can you source that please?

So is this what the game will be for the next two years or so more until GW3 comes out?

there must be something lost in translation because them not currently working on an expansion does not mean they won’t be putting out content

there must be something lost in translation because them not currently working on an expansion does not mean they won’t be putting out content
This says so: “Expansions are definitely something that we’ll potentially look at in the future, but we don’t have a timetable on it,” Johanson says. “We’re open to it, but I think our major focus as a studio is making the living world concept as strong as possibly can for the players that we’ve got.”
How can I read this wrong? They will improve what we have now.
They are just talking about expansions in that article. The problem you are having is insisting that expansions are the only way to introduce new content, which clearly isn’t true.

quest zones and dungeons? quite possibly or they could add to what we have. Gear levels? I certainly hope not, that would be a nightmare.

I don’t think so. Give me the 6 main pieces in Ascendent levels.
They add new content every month for free (but in reality paid for via gem store), theres been loads of new content added since release…
They are giving you constant FREE new content…its a new type of business model…you just after get your head around it…
Yeah they will add in ascended armor at some point. I was thinking after that though. If they add in another gear level, I’ll be extremely disappointed.

What I’m trying to get my head around is why the game is called Guild Wars. From what I hear and part of what I know, just getting a guild bank is long. After that, the experience needed to improve guild “perks” are just too long and too demanding, especially for smaller guilds. Where’s my incentive to keep playing? I bought all my gear WHICH at the time I didn’t know was pretty much end game gear. They should really make Exotic gear BoP.
Yeah they will add in ascended armor at some point. I was thinking after that though. If they add in another gear level, I’ll be extremely disappointed.
I hear getting Ascended accessories is very, very tiresome. You run the same dungeon over and over and over.
What I do know is no new game is going to compare to a game that’s 7 years old, in terms of content and updates. The game needs to mature for that to happen.
Or maybe they just released it too quickly, without enough thought or resources going into many of the game mechanics and content.
Sequels are compared to their predecessors for a reason. With a similar staff, the second title in a series should build on the previous concepts and successful elements of the first title. It’s completely fair to expect much of what was learned in the first game to be applied to the second. Expectations are going to be much higher, just like they were for Diablo III as compared with Diablo II.
It is funny to me how video games are one of the only products that can be released before they are really finished, just to make a profit, and people defend that position.
I can’t think of any other industry where if you released something early, and it wasn’t really ready for public consumption, that it would get defended because the company needed to start making money. In most industries the company and the product would get absolutely torn apart by the media as well as possibly being the target of recalls, refunds or a class action lawsuit.
Just amazing really.
Video games are not MMOs. MMOs are a very specific, high risk type of video game. I wouldn’t tolerate it in most types of games, but realistically, there are going to be less MMOs as time goes on, because they just cost too much to make, compared to the risk of what you could get back. That’s why more and more iphone games are coming out. Low risk for high chance of profit. If it doesn’t work out, it’s not the end of the world. The same can’t be said for MMOs.
I wish people would start separating MMOs from other types of video games in their thought process. They really are a beast apart.
The more ambitious the MMO, the earlier it will end up having to launch, unless you have so much money up front that you can afford to hold off indefinitely. Neither NCSoft nor Anet has that kind of money.
Please tell me more of your vast knowledge of the inner workings of MMOs, NCSoft and ANet.
Yup , I’m enjoying this game , I have been here since launch and I plan on staying longer or until I grow bored or tired of it .
Back to topic. Gw2 is…or was worth the 60 dollars I dumped in it. I can play till the day It dies. A game that lasts for more then a month, is worth more then 60 dollars. It was alot of fun. I enjoyed leveling 2 characters.
The game came out of the woodworks with some unimaginable flaws. My first character was broken after she hit 30 becuase of story-bugs which pretty much broke her in everyway. I rebounded though and dried other things.
The game was fun. I have issues with the way anet is handling the cash shop, and some of the optional grind is just a tad tooo insane. I had to make my boyfriend do the “super box”. I got fed up within the first hour, and just gave up after I learned the diffrence between a bubble bauble and bauble.
The grind for some trivial appearences is just…ungodly. Anet also tends to make very big cash cows(Legendaries being one of the biggest). I want them to make money I do, but I hate the overbearing feeling of the game. I feel like I am “crap” when i don’t have a legendary. Which I dont have, I burn myself out trying to get one…and hence I did not play the game for nearly 3 months. That grind…is…to…much. I would rather give up my kidney then waste my soul at it.
Other then the overbearing greediness(which is just my oppinion. take it as that alone), the game is great. PVP needs some great attention, and I wish anet would start takeing feedback from the suggestions forum. They do not seem nearly as ivolved as they did in gw1.
Gw1 was also much more fun, and I felt the designers pressence in the game. I do not know how to describe it. Every plant, every skill, every piece of dialoge~It just felt like a small group of people pushed themselves to extreams for the players. I never saw a single anet employe(Which does not mean they are not there, I just never saw one). Yet I knew they were there. They were warm and loving. And when we asked for something, like make-over kits~They said “We don’t know how” and then a week later showed up and said “FOr you guys, we would slave ourselves”. That company I wanted to put money in. The cash shop never poped up in game and said “BUY FROM ME OR ELSE”.
Gw2 I don’t feel the designers care about the players. They care about the game, but I don’t feel they take any feedback seriosly as I have seen it. That said, My belief is the error with the game lies in the company and the cash shop. The rest of the game is beautiuful and contains many styles for many people. I mean everyone has a niche somewhere…and it will just get better. I just think that anet needs to fill its old shoes, and get back into the grove. The game is under 1 year of age, so I understand it will take time.
Lets be honest, this game isnt fun. It was easy to tell that the first few weeks aslong as you werent in denial.
I loved GW1. It has great lore, an awesomely deep combat sytem and epic storylines and world, but it was instanced. GW2 had all this to pull from. All anet needed to do was make this not instanced. The game was already nearly perfect.
We waited years and years for this dream game that was so simple in concept and instead got delivered a boring, repetitive and bland combat system with a large overworld and a storyline that pales in comparison to the past GW1 campaigns.
Both PvE and PvP are terrible because of the new combat.
Granted, there was one important advancement to the genre, wich were events, but i feel this will just be used by the other big MMO’s because this GW2 cant hold. The game needs a complete revamp on the combat.
I say bring on GW3, if this will be GW1-2, because this game we were presented is failing harder than SWTOR did. And i say this because SWTOR was sub based at first, wich is a much harder model and is now recovering strongly. GW2 is F2P and its substancially losing players. This from a sucessor to a game that survived without any expansions for years and sold millions of units.
Just give us a proper sequal to GW1. I am not interested in playing this borefest or any expansions to it, wich keep the same systems. Deliver what you promised anet. Deliver me a non-instanced GW1. This was all we ever asked, all you ever promised back when you first announced the game and exactly what you failed to deliver. Guild Wars, wich was my home for MMORPG’s was destroyed by your own hand. Can you find it in you to rebuild this shattered game? Stop trying to fall in the pitfall’s of wanting to be different. Its not easy, and somehow you made it work with GW1. Why throw all that away?
I will admit i have given up since i first played GW2. I saw the ridiculous commercial reviews praising a game that had no substance because they dont know how to review MMO’s. Everyone was fooled, but everyone that played the game now knows what this all ends up in. Knowing anet, i knew right there that you wouldnt understand this reality until the first expansion comes out and bombs. I hope im wrong and there is hope for a better Guild Wars sooner than that.
For the record, i completely regret getting GW2. I felt completely cheated out of my money. I have played several MMO’s and this was the only one that left me in pure regret. We stopped having GW1 campaigns or expansions, or the non-instanced one that was promised for… this. It was a waste of time and money. Waste of time looking forward to this game for so long only to see it fall flat even though i had moderate expectations.

Since I quit my job and bought a really powerful gaming computer, I literally play this game from sun up to sun down.
Yes its fun…
But yes its become boring and a grind, what i mean is at launch the game was amazing and i enjoyed it because everything was accessible, loot was plentiful and it had no time sinks.
After Nov the Ascended stuff was released and since then its become grind after grind and to be quite honest boring useless time sinks, everything is now bound that drops or is acquired, guild bounties are horrendous to do, FotM is a repetitive nightmare, open world is dead…
At this time its either level Alts or do world events..the only thing kept me here is friends i’ve met, but yesterday i installed Tera so i might been gone for an extended period sadly..
(edited by Dante.1508)
I actually do think this game is fun to be honest. I have played from early access and play when I get time. I run dungeons with guild mates and WvW with a few good friends. I log on to do daily and chat with guild friends. I don’t play every night but try to hit events and WvW on weekends. Play something else your not paying a subscription so your out nothing. Good luck
I have a level 80 but I also have several alts. My level 80 is still only part of my experience playing the game. I still need to see all the dungeons, I still need to see and complete all the zones, I still need to see the different Personal Story arcs.
Endgame for me just means I keep playing the game.
Yes, yes it is.

lets discuss who is actually enjoying the game at level 80. also, do you consider this game a grind? in my opinion, people are leaving this game because its incredible boring and grindfest at level 80. what do you guys think?
Except their numbers have been stable or rising & they’ve recently had to increase the server capacity because of an influx of new players.
So.. They’ve increased the server capacity twice. each time they do, the servers fill up again.. so your line: “in my opinion, people are leaving this game” is factually inaccurate.

Actually it’s accurate. People ARE leaving this game. They’re also joining this game. I believe, and it’s just my belief, that the joining crowd is bigger than the leaving crowd. Or at least the joining and returning crowd.
Lets be honest, this game isnt fun. It was easy to tell that the first few weeks as long as you werent in denial.
Okay, wait . . .
So I was having fun for the first month, a lot of fun. Exploring, checking out Vistas, seeing how some of the areas were done, trying WvW (and initially being turned off of it). I must have been heavily in denial to have had any fun at all, then?
Look, it’s okay if you didn’t like the game, but saying that anyone who does like it is in denial is a bit much. I loathe the Madden games, I don’t really like the Halo franchise, and I think Farmville is a big waste of time . . . but I don’t run around insulting fans of these games. They’re just not for me and it’s okay.
I’m not having fun in it any more. I’ll log on to do group activities, but more often than not, my friends are not online. We are finding other things to play.
To be honest, this game has some brilliant ideas, but the implementation is mediocre, and the radical change in philosophy over Guild Wars has really turned me off. The only reason I’ve not abandoned the game altogether is because of Guild Wars.
But the sPvP is pathetic compared to Guild Wars. I don’t think any of the great PvP’ers from GW are here any more.
WvW is interesting, but doesn’t hold my attention for long. Unfortunately, I think the really quality players have moved on because it simply wasn’t ready for release, and it took ANet too long to fix the culling and other issues (exploits).
The PvE is good for what it is, but the lack of mission instances like GW had leaves me just as bored as every other MMO has after exploring the world. Hearts are no different than quests in other games, really. DE’s are a good idea, but I’d thought that they’d be changed over time as the world progresses. Yet I find the same old DE’s every time I go to any zone.
Gameplay mechanics are frustrating. My character randomly changes targets. The trait system is nice, but the skill/weapon system is limiting and ultimately, repetitively boring.
RNG for precursors. Big fail. Big, big, big, big fail.
5-person instances. Big fail.
Tier gear. No thanks. Other games do it better, but I played GW because I hated that. Thanks for the bait-and-switch there, ANet. Especially since it’s a serious grindfest to equip multiple characters. Whatever happened to grinding for skins, only, and not gear? What ever happened to “we don’t make grindy games”?
5 guilds at once, but no alliances. Possibly the biggest fail.
SAB – neat idea.
So really, the ArenaNet of today is not the great ArenaNet of Guild Wars. I don’t like where they’re taking the game, and I don’t think they really have much ability to manage this project. Everything seems half-done, rushed, and not ready.
GW2 is a mile wide, yet an inch deep. No wonder people are so bored with it already.
Well summarized.
It raised the hype to astronomical levels before launch and, for the most part, delivered on it by bringing fresh ideas to the MMO table. It’s a great game for the sticker price but has some serious issues past 80 (in my, and a lot of other people’s opinion). When looking at some of the posts on the forums it becomes apparent that not everyone can see this (yet) though.
So… back to the topic of fun.
Erm, 1-80 was great fun. I think most people will agree that they got their money’s worth. After that things become stale really quickly though, and, as friends and guildies leave the game it becomes more and more difficult to log in every day.
So, it’s not so much fun anymore, no.
Me. I’ll just hang out here and wait for the fixes.

The core mechanics are fine. There’s some polishing to do, but the core game itself is brilliant. Once the varnish is on, you’ll love the game even more. Until then, you’re stuck looking at a work in progress. Rome wasn’t built in a day.
Your post feels like a badly disguised mount/healer/raid argument and indeed, that stuff ain’t coming. No need to implement bad features.

I guess I have to add the new leaderboards to my list of disappointments. In fact, I think this was the straw that finally drove me away.
I haven’t logged in for more than a couple minutes in over a week. No desire to play anymore.
I liked my anonymity. Thanks, again, ArenaNet, for making your game more like WoW.

Guild Wars 1 had leaderboards in challenge missions. I’m not very sure how this is different. It had a ladder for guilds too.
The stuff that WoW has is far more/completely different from this. This is relatively harmless compared to something like gear-score.
Particularly if you’re a PvP, you need something to compete FOR. PvPers have been asking for this. Even in Guild Wars 1 this would have been welcomed by the PvP crowd.
Frankly, I could have done without the achievement leaderboard, but I don’t see why it’s an issue for anyone.

The difference, for me, is for whom it’s designed to appeal. The challenge missions, guild ladders, and the scrolling “XXXX has won a battle in the Hall of Heroes” were all to inspire competitive group play, and it was the group entities that were recognized.
When you devolve to individual competition, you’re now appealing to a lower standard of human behaviour. Instead of encouraging teamplay, you’re promoting the individual, and discouraging people from acting together. Moreover, you’re appealing to the obsessive types, and rewarding such behaviour.
Now I realize that nobody is making anyone do anything here, but I’d much rather see things that encourage teambuilding and cooperation, rather than one-uppsmanship. It’s a big turnoff. I can get that crap anywhere.

I soloed some of the challenge missions and got on the leader board. At least in some of the cases, you didn’t need a guild to do them. They still had the leaderboard with your name up.
If you were obsessive, you could keep looking at that, and keep trying to stay on the leaderboard. I’m not obsessive, at least not in that way, and so I don’t keep trying.
I’m in the top 1000 for achievement points, but I don’t expect to stay there, because I don’t think it matters. Others will, however get some kind of end game out of this. This isn’t really bad for the game, it’s good for the game.
Anet has been trying to build a game where people can do different things depending on what they like. This isn’t any different. People that like this sort of thing can now do this.

To be honest, I’m probably just looking for reasons to give it up. I had years of fun in Guild Wars, and tried pretty much everything that game had to offer. I played quite a few other games as well, but always kept coming back to Guild Wars.
Essentially, most of the reasons that kept me interested in Guild Wars aren’t here in GW2. I realize that they’re trying to make money by appealing to a larger crowd, but for me, that means it’s more like the games I didn’t like, because Guild Wars was better.
I had a great social time in Guild Wars as well. We (my old guildies/alliance mates) are generally disappointed in GW2, and feel it’s kind of sold out on us. Most don’t log on any more. The rest log on rarely. I think our (smallish) guild finally went dead when we realized that the guild missions were going to be more frustrating to unlock and activate than it was really worth. We’re still in touch, but mostly are playing other things until something comes along that grabs us like Guild Wars did.
So yea. I suppose I’m hanging on because of how great a time we had in Guild Wars. I keep hoping that ArenaNet will go back to that. But they’re a very different company now, with different ownership and priorities. And I can see where GW2 could have been great, but they just don’t seem to have the courage to get quite that far outside the box.
Anyway. Whoever had the patience to read that probably is wondering why they bothered.
TL:DR – I guess I’m just looking for reasons to finally leave, now, and one tends to find what one seeks.

I can understand this. If you don’t like the game, you don’t like the game. Nothing wrong with that.
I just think that two, three years down the road, this game will be amazing. But it takes time to make the kind of content that will keep people playing long term.
At any rate, it’s a different game, and those most attached to Guild Wars 1 are likely going to feel the differences keenly.

The game was fun. I have issues with the way anet is handling the cash shop, and some of the optional grind is just a tad tooo insane. I had to make my boyfriend do the “super box”. I got fed up within the first hour, and just gave up after I learned the diffrence between a bubble bauble and bauble.

So true.
This super box content added to the game… pure grind.
I’m sorry, but I don’t want to grind the same content 100 times to get a unique item that is offered with the additional content.
So what happened to the “no grind” gameplay… seems more like they are ‘encouraging’ grind play.
So essentially I am being told that if i want to reap the rewards from additional content… I must grind the content to no end.

They did repeatedly state both before and after release that there would be grind in the game. They only thing they have actually said was no MANDATORY grind.
All grind currently in game is very much optional and rewards you will special-looking stuff, therefore the no grind talk is still very much valid.

I read this and was like … wait … i didn’t write this.
This is basically how I would describe my feeling about this game aswell.
Guild wars 1 was different to every other mmo out there.
Now I want to steer clear from the WoW comparisons but it seems Anets loyalty was more to the WoW player base. I think WoW influenced Gw2 direction more than what Gw1 did.

Of course it was, since it was not a MMO at all.
GW1 was a CORPG, not a MMO.

I think you missed part of my point.
Sure grinding isnt mandatory, however I dont want to have to grind content endlessly in order to get one piece of equipment or reward.
In this super box content, I saw the weapons that were available and was very keen in earning one. Now, I say replaying content 5 times is sufficient and earns some kind of reward (like these weapons) is enough. Let’s not forget about the 1 gold requirement to buy it, which by no means does this content provide. The Bubble Bauble requirement is a joke and requires ample amounts of grind. GG
But then again these super box rewards are purely cosmetic, so it is clearly not something you need, but rather something you want. If you want to look “cool” you have to work for it. That is what ArenaNet have been saying more or less since they announced GW2.

The game is fun, at least for me. I randomly bought it out of boredom because I didn’t have anything to play. To be honest I thought it would be more like a GW1.5 with static boring combats so that I finish the story and never play it again.
I was wrong, I really love this game and unlike GW1, I’ll buy the expansions of GW2.

Work hard and grind are 2 completely different things.
Grind = mind numbing progression
working hard = opposite of grind
If you want us to work hard for something cool at least make it interesting in doing so.
Watch Groundhog Day — when everything is always the same everyday, it gets boring. You need variety and that’s what grinding does NOT provide.
I am not discussion the definition of grind. I am simply disagreeing with you on the part that ArenaNet have “ignored their no grind talk”.

Please go to the link above and check out the manifesto video right in the bottom right corner.
About a 1/3 of the way in, you will see why I am saying what I am saying.
I am fully aware of that, since for some reason people always bring up the Manifest when they don’t like something. Funnily enough people seems to missunderstand what a manifest actually is. A manifest is not an universal truth, it is not something that is set in stone. But rather a vision of a product.
Even so what they actually say can be understood in several ways. And one of those ways is that they are talking about mandatory grind. They have also made quite a few bits of posts and interviews after this video (and before release) where they made it quite clear that grind would exist in the game, but would not be needed to stay on top.

When Ree Soesbee said she wanted to make the players feel like the heroes, she really meant Trahearne, Rox, and the Norn version of Bobak Ferdowsi should feel like the heroes, and you get to be their squires.
Pony up squire boy!

Quote “We just don’t want players to grind in Gw2” – Manifesto
This is a sales pitch. They know what players dislike and grind is one of them.
You say this anywhere on a site about your product and you’ve won people over already.
What they should’ve said is… “Oh but we really do want you to grind if you want anything cool”.
One thing I hate more than grind… lies.

In the case of GW2, the manifesto was also used as a marketing tool. One which, in many people’s eyes, they did not live up to nor even tried.
That is why many people get the feeling they were lied to.
