dueling
Can you tell me which MMO you played that has these hostilities? Currently playing Free trial WoW and Rift. So far, I don’t see any of these hostile duelers.
Tell me which MMO and I’ll give it a try to see if you are right.
My experience in WoW with duelers was similar but not quite as bad as charr’s. Anytime I’d run through Goldshire on my server, I’d usually be slammed with duel requests. At least a couple of times a week, I’d have some random kitten follow me around, spamming the duel request and PMing me when I’d decline. The language was never really hostile, but it was pretty darn irritating.
Oddly enough, this only happened in Goldshire. Anytime I’d be running around the giant duel area in front of Orgrimmar, I’d be left alone. But anyway, yeah. People can be and often are annoying little terrors.
Has this experience happened recently?
Currently, I am running around in Goldshire looking to see if someone is going to duel me. So far, no luck.
It was over the past year or two. I haven’t played in a couple of months, though. Keep in mind that different servers will have different populations of people in different areas.
Now, I did encountered four duelist. They did try to send me duel invites and I declined every single one of them. One of them sent three duel invites, and I declined them all.
However, no harsh words or angry private messages from any of them.

count the posters in this topic. Count the posts. At most you’re calling 2 to 3 people majority… When someone asks for new dungeons or something, I should run in there and if I find a single rude post, I should call rude posters the majority. That works, right?

I see more anti-dueling people ridiculing and teasing people, that wants dueling, than people, that wants dueling themselves, ridiculing anti dueling people.
If forum behavior means anything, then dueling should be implemented.

+1 for dueling.Too bad that this forum community is against adding new content so will never happen.

I wouldn’t say they’re against new content just that a part of them is against duelling. Also duelling would be a feature not content.

Open World Duelling in itself isnt a problem. Its the culture that stems from it. A decline feature has never solved that problem either, so as a solution it would unlikely be a viable option for the devs to go with.
However there are alternatives. Destinys Edge has the Arena fights and such an Arena would work well for both a gameplay and lore perspective in either LA or Black Citadel or maybe even Hoelbrak.
Maybe the home instance could be adapted to invite a party member for a duel.
Im not against duelling these days, but i dont want to see the idea copy and pasted from other mmos and have spam invites flying everywhere and chat channels descending into the same old madness. Id rather GW did something with the concept that made sense for the world it existed in.
Dueling is a feature that adds nothing of value other than as a time waster (like costume brawl, instruments, etc.), and even that is only of value to a slim minority of players.
With that in mind, I would prefer that they spend their time on literally anything else.
Maybe someday, when they’ve literally added everything else to the game, they can add duels just because there is nothing left for them to work on, but that is a highly fictional scenario that will never come to be.

for some of us it’s important. And it would have been a better addition to the game than someone wasting their time making sure that new players couldn’t see points of interest and vistas until they’re level 18.
People like you who want dueling need to suggest a way for it to be ingame that counters at least some of the other people’s objections to it.
Afraid that Im going to have to disagree.
A customer making a request of a service provider doesnt need to suggest how the service provider can make other customers happy in my opinion.
True, s/he doesn’t need to. But if the company isn’t going to put in the feature because other of their customers don’t want it and they haven’t thought of a way to get around those complaints (possibly because it’s low priority and they don’t want to spend time on it) then someone who can do so and get others to agree has more likelihood of getting what they want.
Or they can just ask for it without trying to fix the problems and not get what they want, whichever floats their boat.

Right, but you’re in a very slim minority, whereas ArenaNet’s focus groups indicated that hiding vistas would help retain lots of new players.
They are going to do things that benefit lots of players before they do things that only benefit a handful, regardless of how important something may be to that handful.
The problem with open world dueling is that bands of thugs that think there special just go around killing everyone in sight. this already happens in this game in the jumping puzzle in WvW making it very hard to get that jumping puzzle done. I have played games that have this feature and it’s not fun you are trying to complete a quest or some activity in the game and some group of thugs hang out and kill everyone trying to complete the event. No open world dueling in this game, the only way that dueling could work is to have dueling arenas with a system similar to the LFG system
put the correct term in but not everyone has kittens

To be fair to the OP and others that support duels, I don’t think they are talking about open world player killing. They are talking about a duel between 2 players that agree to do so.
i would like duels……..somewhere deep in a nightmare dungeon that is already hard enough to finish, out of sight from ppl who want to enjoy PvE for a change.
really, the poison that is duels introduces more harm then it fixes, the argument of having duels just cause is as strong as having mounts.
i say, if you really insist on adding duels, let’s also add mounts because it’s on the exact same level.
I remember a while back, WvW BL behind the Windmill. Half the people in WvW could be found there dueling.
I also remember that this thread has been brought up over and over since launch.
So I would say that there is is a considerable demand for this feature. Always has been.
Now it’s common to see people in the middle of EB, just outside SM dueling.
It’s something that should’ve been there from the start. Right Click → Send Duel Request. Simple. They get a message, “Player A has requested a duel, do you accept? Yes/No”.
Don’t want to have anything to do with it?
Options → Check Box “Ignore all duel requests”.
Never know that anyone even tried to send you a request.
Worried about people whispering you for auto declining?
Again, this too can be easily solved.
In WoW it was common for these duels to take place just outside major cities. In GW2 we have an instancing system (used by the story). So outside the city would be one of those instance markers. Off to the side and out of the way. Click on it and you go to an instanced area of the map. Only within this instance do you get the menu option.
There ya go, if you are not interested in it. You won’t even see it. Since it’s only possible to duel request other people inside the instance, you don’t even need the Menu Option to auto decline. Just don’t go inside the instance. Since there is no auto decline, no one will whisper you and harass you for having the option checked.

Where did you find any statistics to support any of it?
I got a new friend buy the game and the only thing hiding vistas did was confuse him. He’s not leveling fast enough without them to be able to quest consistently, nor fast enough to be able to gain levels trough his personal story. So me and my boyfriend had to physically show them each one, as new players can still take them, just not see them on the map. The other solution would have been to continuously grind events.
I don’t think that the updates that they did were statistics based at all. For one thing I’m sure that nobody wanted the personal story butchered and mixed up. Nobody wanted to have to unlock things like the downed state. But they thought that if they made the leveling experience more grindy it would appeal to China. However Chinese people that were interested in Guild Wars 2 to begin with didn’t exactly want yet another Korean grinder.
Leveling experience is not awful, but it’s grindyer and more confusing than what it was 2 years ago.

There was a red post that indicated that they had done focus groups and that the changes were a result of those. So I don’t have any numbers, I’m just repeating that they said that they had numbers.
1) If implemented right you can’t be “spammed” with duel requests, the option just wouldn’t show up for the player requesting a duel.
2) Anet has steps for harassment. Not implementing a feature/content because of that excuse is not how a game should be developed. Some of the worst offenders in this community fall into the category of open world pve events, farming, LS community events, and dungeon running. Should Anet cancel development of those?
3) Dueling is not about balance.
4) Dueling belongs in the open world environment, and shouldn’t even be considered for implementation without.
5) Dueling is a great safe way to learn your profession with friends, and ease into GW2 PvP scene w/o entering the “esport” so called balance of GW2 SPvP, or taking space in WvW and not contributing.
6) Another source of revenue with “Starters” for duels, similar to “Finishers” sold in the gem store. Remember nobody gets stomped or dead from a duel, I personally end mine w/a salute or bow.

I would personally love to see dueling put into the game. I’m not much of a PvPer (Still Rabbit rank after 2 years lol), but I’d love to be able to have a friendly duel with my friends in open world while waiting for events or dungeon parties to fill up.
If they don’t intend to add public dueling, I could see them adding some sort of easy-access dueling chamber to guild halls. If this were the case, I can only hope that people from other guilds would be able to join a sparring match as most of my friends are scattered throughout different guilds.
can we please….PLEASE have a dueling option already? i mean REALLY! its a basic standard in mmo games….its been a long time guys, dont skip out on a dueling system….its NOT that hard.
They’re not doing it so that they can keep all pvp and those that are competitively inclined in the mists. There is dueling there, that is focused on skill. If you want to use your equips, there is dueling in obsidian sanctum/borderlands.
Lots of PVE players like their world nice and cooperative. Anet doesnt need to add dueling options to that just because other mmos have it.

thing is we DON’T have dueling options in Spvp nor in WvW. We have nice people paying 2000 gems a month to keep an arena up and we have people that decided upon a location in WvW, but there’s no game mechanic, meaning that anyone is free to march in and ruin the fun for others.
I’m glad it isn’t here, and I’d despise them for adding it. It adds nothing useful, and people can already pvp quite extensively.
Why would you despise them for adding something someone else wants. That would be like me despising them for adding a dungeon because I personally don’t like them.
Because it ruins the game. Seems a good enough reason.
Unlike what the proponents like to cite as their main selling point, this crap wouldn’t be compartmentalized away from players that don’t want it. Even if you somehow get a switch to turn it off, you still get bullying dipkittens demanding you turn it on so they can ‘prove their superiority’. You’ll get dailies to entice you to go try it, artificially inflating ‘player support’. You’ll get achievements to do the same, adding more PvP that the PvE-only set will ineffectually decry.
No, it won’t be something you’ll get to simply ignore and keep soldiering on with what you want to do, because the very nature of dueling is to get in someone’s face. It goes against the game’s design philosophy. The game doesn’t need it. If you’re that desperate to kittensize with someone else, get yourself a private arena and take it there.
2) Anet has steps for harassment.
We had a wonderful illustration of that on reddit just yesterday, with a screenshot of a GM suspending someone for ‘months of harassment.’

Just out of curiosity, where in game was someone able to get away with barassment for months ?
Open world or spvp format? We have them both though you can only duel spvp format with ppl from your own world but you can duel open world format vs other world players. What you should be asking for is more of an EoTM zone where you can have near to full open world pvp (as in being able to chose your side and not be lock to a world).

How pray tell me? People that own arenas for it (2000 gems a month mind you) have to operate them on trust basis. Anyone at any point can just come in and ruin the fun for you by attacking and harassing everyone. We don’t have a duel mode. We don’t have a place dedicated to it by Anet. We have to spend our own money to maybe have a place for it, if nobody harasses that is. And you can’t even report them, because once again there’s no mode. They were just doing PvP how you’re supposed to do it.

PMing you.
Hell no to open dueling!
It isn’t about being afraid of losing. It’s about being humiliated by players you decline to duel.
Turn down an invite, or have it set in the options to block invites, and someone who wants to duel you will start insulting you. Calling you a coward and other names I can’t repeat here without them being kittened. Usually players like this tend to hang in groups and they all join in on the fun of embarrassing you. And when other random players pass by, the jerks get them to join in on the teasing. Then you start getting PM’s from random players making fun of you for not wanting to duel.
You do not add or remove gamemodes according to players attitude. If someone has an attitude problem or is harassing you then just report them. Seems you have a biased view of what a duel is, most of the time it’s a very interesting way to share builds and help teach each others new tricks.
No thank you…

Right now, I am sitting in Goldshire. While I do get duel request often, I declined them to see how they react. So far, not a single person has done anything.

I always see people claiming this workout any proof to back up the statement. Even my own experience shows it to be entirely incorrect.
So yeah, I’d like to see some proof that it would “ruin the game”

That still a duel at the end of the day and that IS the cost of having your own there are ones ppl let others use them. What it sounds like is that you want open world pvp duel and you do have them BUT ppl can still get in the way of that in a lot of ways ppl can get in the way of any duel in any game.
Some ppl would call that unfair in the ideal of using open world pvp as a means of duels. In a lot of games with open world pvp / duels the better gear / buffed person wins locked down pvp know as spvp in gw2 brakes ppl free from this unfairness. If you wanted to club baby seals and auto win i do not get the point of dueling in the first places.
Any way you must ask for what the game can produces try not to ask for things from other games that you know will not work gw2 is not made for 1v1 its made for small man combat or super big fights. To ask for 1v1 your asking for the game to be flip on its head in how the classes work and yes there are simply classes that are made to be OP in small fights or even 1v1 fights and to duel as one of though classes vs a class who simply not made for that (classes with high aoe attk are not made for 1v1) then your simply asking to be the best or to have a game mode where you will win 100% of the time. Your own person kingdom where your god and all other must consider to you not because of your skill but because your play the right build and class that simply IS unkillable.

where does that assumption come from?
Make a new arena like place in Spvp lobby. Allow people to go there and challenge each other. Now to each other they’re red, but to everyone else they’re green. There you go, a dueling mechanic that doesn’t get into anyones way.
A FREE place (why should we pay for a basic feature?) where duelers are protected from harassment. Is that really too much to ask for?
I would support it so long as it is only in a specified are; a dedicated spvp lobby or an isolated zone/separate instance in a city (like the crown pavilion is part of Divinity’s Reach but separate and not somewhere you just kinda wander into)

The Bane in the Black Citadel is one possible place. It’s in a PvE area so you will keep your PvE gear and it’s behind a portal so that duelers are away from everyone else. It can have a check at the portal saying it’s a PvP dueling area if people innocently wandering in is a concern.
Or it can be an arena that requires a gem store pass, like the Royal Terrace. No pass means no access to the dueling area and there is no ability to duel outside the arena.

I am not sure that I understand this point. I support the idea of adding consensual open world dueling so long as there is an opt out function that is the default ( you have to choose to be able to be challenged to duels) but dueling is by definition NOT a basic feature or it would already be in the game. It is an optional feature that is being requested as an addition to the game.
Too niche of content to be worth developement would be my guess.
I’ve seen it asked for, and implemented, in several other games where after a month or two it pretty much dies out.
I feel everyone is too locked into “right-click and select duel on someone”. Why not have it implemented like /rank or through an item-like thing? For example write “/duel” and your character will plant a dueling flag which other players can walk up to and interact with to initiate the duel.
That way you CAN’T spam duels on people who doesn’t want it, no need to even add an ignoring option. It would work like a guild booster banner, I can see no problems with this other than “blocking” interactive things, but that problem already exists and I only see it as a slight annoyance (tab ftw).

As much as I don’t care about it, it makes some sense with Charr as a player race.

I have generally not been in favor of dueling but I do see merit when suggestions like this are brought up. These kinds of suggestions, at least for me, tend to promote a healthier, more constructive dialogue that could ultimately produce some good results. While I am not suggesting that this is “the solution,” I do think that the post represents the kind of discussion that could possibly result in common ground and being able to move this forward.

It’s an interesting suggestion but I’m not sure it addresses the concerns about harassment.

Duel me bro, come on, touch it. TOUCH IT! What’s the matter, you chicken? HEY EVERYONE LOOK AT THIS GUY TOO COWARDLY TO TOUCH THE POLE!
As I understand the previous concerns it’s not so much the request to duel that is bothering people but the harassment people say they encounter. Which is why I was suggesting a gem store item. If you don’t have one it’s the ultimate, no I can’t.
Far too dramatic and exaggerated, I have no clue how you guys/gals are able to login with all the harassment seen in LS group events, dungeons, and farm groups…PvE, or any game mmo/online for that matter.
Use the ignore and report features offered by Anet, move on, and continue on your merrily way.
