gem shop vs in-game rewards
New gem shop stuff? Surprise, surprise. We haven’t seen a whole new set available outside the gem shop since the beginning. That’s quite unbelievable, really.

They should make Gem Shop outfits only time exclusive and add them to the loot tables after half a year.. That way, they still get their gem $ and everyone else gets something out of it too..

Ah, right. There were so many I forgot to mention this one.
Gem shop items are in game rewards….? Its kind of foolish to think lesser of gem shop items then say an item you buy from an npc. Its the same thing and keeping it on a gold system lets you run any thing you want in GW2 and still work to the items you want.

People seriously complain about everything, before they even released items into the gem store like this instead you had to farm events for like a 1/10,000 chance to get a ticket, netting possibly hundreds of gold in debt.
It was so bad to the point where people were begging for them to add armor into the gem store instead.
Now for only 109 gold you can buy an entire new set of armor from the gem store.
Exactly. I think the people who complain about this are unemployed and have no income and instead spend 40+ hours a week in-game. Which, btw, is fine, they have ample playtime to earn gold and exchange for gems to purchase that armor.
I make more money in a month than a significant portion of the American population makes in a year, and I still think it’s crap that every armor set is in the gem store. There’s no prestige or sentimental attachment to anything if I throw my credit card at it (or if I grind easy content for gold to get it). I want to work for some of the new stuff that comes out in ways that demonstrate mastery of the game or at least involve playing a video game with my friends with goals besides earning gold.
Excuse me for wanting to play a video game and do some cool stuff to acquire gear.
Why what wrong with gold? Its no different then getting tokens in fact it is a type of token but a universal token that can be used for nearly any thing. Why would you ask to lock you self into only being able to get one thing vs having nearly endless chose for what your working for? Would you mind if your job payed you in money that you can only spend at the stores that they say its ok for you to buy from but to buy from other stores you must get another job that say it ok to buy from there chose?
Both of you are missing my point comply its a GEM store not a MONEY store if you chose to use real life money that ok but your not forced to. Gold is not hard to get in this game and most “good” skins cost about 100 ish gold where most “good” gem store skins come out to being on the lines of 70 to 80 gold.

You’re missing the point. Gold acquisition can be done anywhere in-game. If it costs 100g, what does that tell someone who sees you using the skin? It tells them that you earned gold somehow and spent it, nothing more. What does seeing someone with a Fractal skin tell you? It tells you that they play Fractals and have at a minimum reached level 20 and have done it ‘enough’ to get lucky and get that skin. That distinction is critical.
What does having a Mini Polar Bear Cub tell someone? That person bought it with gems/gold. Cool. What does having a Mini Liadri the Concealing Dark tell someone? That person actually performed an in-game task and defeated Liadri, something not everyone can do. That is prestige, and the actions that create prestige also create sentimental value. You remember achieving that goal, and that nostalgia is healthy and valued. That is ultimately what people want when they say that they don’t want armor skins or whatever in the gem store; they want something that means something.
Count he number of ways that Anet can actually earn money from this game and it should be obvious WHY these items are in the Gem Store. You DO understand that if they don’t make some money, the game servers don’t continue to light up, right? It’s worth noting that the actual game content that was added was distributed to ALL valid players absolutely free of charge.
Also, note that since you CAN purchase GEMS for in-game GOLD, calling it a “cash shop” is not entirely accurate. I get that some players want to get everything for free, but that’s not how a businesses actually operates.

They can keep adding lots of things to the gem store, but it shouldn’t be that all new armor sets or what-not are in the gem store. A healthy game will have some sets in the gem store and some sets available to be earned elsewhere. No one is saying that ANet isn’t allowed to make money.

That a problem you have your putting presser on ppl who wants to look one way or another for how “good” they are where looks should be more about how the player wants to look.
There is only one important value what you feel is best looking or best that you can do if you let others values be more important then your own or let other chose what is good or bad then your always going to come up short in the end. So kindly get over your self make your hero look the way you want and stop judging others for not having “hard to get” skins etc.. in a GAME for fun.

well, you make gold in game. so gemshop reward is ingame reward.

It’s cute that you feel like you speak for the entirety of all gamers everywhere when you say the things you do.
I think the very reason for this is, if I remember correctly, because GW2 has looked at other games and modeled some of their ways after them. They have even said so in a article I once read when the game was just coming out. For instance, when we look at how skins are being implemented, or outfits if you will, it also looks similar to how Riot handles skins in League of Legends. Its Free to play, and they make tons of money off of just selling skins and in store items. And guess what? They are successful with it. I am willing to bet GW2 is also trying to do the same.
Who needs epic fights and adventures for epic loot when you can just sweep our credit card or play the MS Excel game with your little broker and the trading post.

I mind a lot less if I’m getting high quality content for free, but they really should add the occasional set to the game itself.

Everything Rising Dusk says is magic, and true, and he can actually speak for me in all things this nature.
Also I have no problem with gemhole, my problem is with the kind of stuff there. You can still make tons of money from selling stupid kitten like bobblehead lab, but ADD physical ITEMS to the GAME via, the GAME, and keep attainable loot out of the gemhole thnkx.
Implying Anet doesn’t make madcash just off tab/bank/char expansion and character changes.

Every thing he is saying he is trying to combined gems with real life money only what he doing is comply leaving out the part of gold to gems.
The fact your calling things that ppl like as “stupid” shows that your not about doing things for fun and you feel that you need to make the game into some type of “look at what i have and how much better i am then you” much like you see in other games that fall into more WoW like where dps readers tell you who are the best. GW2 is simply not that type of game that why we cant see what gear other ppl are using with out the person permission and we have no system of seeing who doing the most dps.
Its about fun and i think ppl who go after events for items that they can show off to other in a way of feeling better then them no longer really have fun playing video games or any game its about just being better then others.

You guys do realize anet defintely has the ability to release new ingame rewards as long with gemstore stuff too right?
It can’t be that hard to add actual rewards instead of stuffing literally every new reward behind a paywall? can it? It’s not possible to add both at the same time?

Apparently we’re “entitled” if we want both.

Because we can’t be angry about both?
When a developer tries to make cosmetic items fit the role of endgame progression and cash shop items, there is a fundamental conflict of interest. This is especially true in the case of armor. We’ve been told that armor looks are expensive to produce, due at least in part to needing male and female versions for human/Norns and for Sylvari, and versions for Charr/Asura. Each armor then needs 6 distinct models — and that’s assuming that a resize for Norn is an easy change.
ANet’s game design and business model both ask a lot of cosmetic items like armor and weapons. Too much, if you ask me.
This is the major issue with the Gemstore. It takes out so much reward & goals for playing the game.
Yet another reason people want an expansion they can buy. Factions nearly doubled the number of armor skins & more than doubled the number of weapon skins. GW2 has added about 2-4 sets of weapons to the actual GAME. The rest require gambling.

Amen there.
Working to earn gold to buy the things you want. That’s what we all do in real life and is missing the point of playing video games completely. I’m really dissatisfied with this aspect of GW2 and gold <→ gems is just another mechanism to force that reward system on players.
I too lament the fact that we’re coming up on 2 years and still the only new armor look we have that doesn’t involve the gem store is the single set locked behind the ascended grind. And I’m sure at least part of the decision of the ridiculous resource and time requirements for ascended involved “encouraging” people to RMT their gold/rewards/progression.
Even considering the gem store armors, I’m fairly certain that there are less new looks available than we got with Factions. You can talk about how much work is involved in making a new set but I know the work it involves. You can bet that per person it’s less work than what’s involved in getting just one of your characters set up in ascended, and they are getting payed.
Visual customization is stagnant in GW2, it has been for a while. And performing dull mindless tasks best described as work to buy the few gem store styles (or anything in game for that matter) is not how a great game presents player rewards.
who actually wants that? Do we really want to be playing those same game mechanics for
another 5 or 10 years? -Mike O’Brien

They could have added it in a chest spawning randomly throughout the open world
Actually the new Adventurer’s Scarf and Goggles drops from chests during sandstorms in Dry Top. So they did add new armor to the open world.
ANET need money to keep the game runing, i am happy that we are getting more outfits and skins in the gemshop, is a good way to make money and no hurts the game. In others games you can buy overpowered items in the cashop, and only the persons with money can get the best stuff and own the game.
We don’t have that problem all in the gemshop is cosmetic and fun.
Nothing in the gemshop prevent you to get the best experience on the game.
My only complain is that the skins in the gemshop are ugly!! Anet need a new armor desing that make new cool desings.

first off, there is nothing “OVERPOWERED” in this game (maybe some runes/sigils?)…
2ndlly, You can literally BUY GOLD directly from gemstore. You can literally buy the most expensive runes straight with your credit card ok… so Im not sure what you are talking about when you say everything is cosmetic and fun… yea the skins are sure but when you can pull out your credit card and buy whatever runes you want, heck even a legendary, you lose your argument.
Legendary is not even truly legendary in this game. You are either stupidly lucky with RNG, buy with credit card, or grind your eyes out farming gold.
You can get anything in this game with a credit card besides a few things like fractal skins, achievement specific unlocks, etc
OP I can’t agree more, this game is lacking some real content and progression. I am so sick of them ruining their game by adding this stuff to the gem store instead of the actual game. No other game does this, even the F2P ones. If they have cash shop items, they also have new armor sets added to the content as well. And to top it off, this game isn’t free to play. It is really frustrating to see this game turn into this, dress up with the wardrobe was, in my opinion, a complete mistake. Not only did it completely devalue armor, but now people can run around with the stupid crap off the cash shop like those quaggan beanies. For town clothes they were fine, but in combat it is just stupid.
I just don’t get why these backpieces aren’t cash shop items and armor sets are given to players who actually play the kitten game. I am sick of seeing people with cool armor that they didn’t lift a finger for. I miss old MMO’s where you see someone cool, and you can expect that they worked for it. Now, you just buy it.
Also I would like to add, if you don’t like them behind a gem store paywall, and you still purchase them. You are contributing to the problem. Sadly there are too many people who use this game similar to Second Life and don’t give a hoot about challenge or engaging content. This is the fault of the community, not Arenanet.

Welcome to MMOs without subscriptions. They gotta pay the bills somehow.
There used to be a Game that made Money fine without sticking everything in the cash shop, it also lacked a Subscription.
it managed to launch 2 other complete in themself games, was widely popular, and had an expansion that sold well.
It is still running, and I Logged in earlier, there are STILL tons of people playing it, even though a sequel, that gutted most of the fun parts of that game was released.
The sequel ironically is not doing as well after 2 years as the first game was doing after 2 years.
many of the people that played that game remember the developer very fondly. And were happy that the developer was able to launch such a great game, without a sub, and without an in-your-face Cash Shop which is what non-sub seems to mean today.
Would be awesome if Anet could learn from THAT developer.
(edited by Nerelith.7360)
Some armor and weapon sets should be created and added to the game with the intention that players would have to work in-game to acquire them. It would have been nice if Zodiac and Tormented weapons were included as rewards for say, a couple of new dungeons? They’re literally just copy pasted over. I can understand that some new skins should be put in the gem store, but EVERY skin has just been thrown into the gem store.
Now I do buy the occasional 800 gems now and again, but I don’t want to be forced to whip out a credit card everytime because I didn’t no-life grind 24/7 for 4 weeks straight to get a set I’d probably like.

You know what is the difference between rpg and moba, one is about you character progression and identification through feats, titles and items on the long term while the other is about multiple low duration confrontation between teams of players.
All this kittening proves that skins are what players want the most, hence are the most profitable, hence it will make sense to use them to get some money since they need money to keep the game going. No money = No GW2. Get it?
Like others have said the game needs to financed somehow so the question is what they’re doing fair or unfair?
Some have claimed welcome to a non subscription game… so lets analyse this statement. They never release more then 1 armor/costume set a month. How much does it cost? something like $9? nearly 1/2 a subscription not just that but they dont release a new one every month so you’ll get some free months to. Doesnt seem unfair to me.
Some claim it should bearnable in game, not sure if the issue is cost or if its because they’d like to have goals to work towards. If its the former then well like we’ve been saying the game needs to be financed somehow. That being said you got the option to play the game make the gold and use conversion to buy it without spending any real life money. if its the later every single release had some new skins that are earn able.
At the end of the day think about the greater picture, what are you asking for exactly? a subscription that has you pay twice as much every single month? A cash shop that includes nothing you’d like to buy? Everything has its pros and cons.
The current system is a balance between all of these. You dont have to pay a penny if you dont want to but if you still want the nifty costume you’ll need to pay more of the game. You dont have time / dont want to pay enough to get the nifty costume. Pay a portion of a regular subscription and get it anyway while at the same help financing the game we love. You dont want to either of these? that fine you will not have any disadvantage by not owning this costume. You want ingame rewards, there are some of those as well.
Its not perfect of course, not saying it is… The price for this balance is you cannot bet the satisfaction of having this costume as a trophy for beating this content. There is the goggles and scarf that which is obviously not the same thing but we all know its absolutely impossible to have everything in life.

I would not have any issues with the current system, except for one.
Being able to buy in-game gold with Gems.
It places the developer in a position where they have a conflict of interest.
There will, and have been times when the developer has to decide whether to do what is best for the in-game economy… and what is best for gem sales, or gem to gold conversions.
While no one can prove that they always or even usually or mostly go on the side of " well it’s best for gem sales so let’s do this, even if it hurts the in-game economy" as far as i am concerned, there is an appearance that the main motivating force is " it’s best for gem sales."
So while some can come up with what appear to be good “in0game world” reasons for nerfing the gold and component drops of “open world” farming, and Diminishing returns, the only thing I can go by is my experience.
My experience in open world component and gold farming is not enjoyable.
Now while the only criteria is not " Am I having fun?" I need to ask…" is my fun being saccrificed for a greater good?" I have to know, the greater good is " the in-game economy" then I can accept that my fun is being saccrificed for something worthwhile to me.
Unfortunately, since the developer also sells Gold for gems. And they have as one of the motivating influences." Increase Gold sales… and sell gold." That conflict has me wondering.
The moment of concern, that my fun may be being saccrificed " For Anet’s Bottom line." is enough for me to " watch… and monitor." while seeking other venues for my pleasure.

The truth is simply, $$$. They want more. Their shareholders want more. Need to pay for the CEO’s bonus somehow. How do they get more? Not by throwing it in-game.
Releasing more items in gem shop means you convert more gold to gems. Inflation in gem/gold exchange drives you to spend real money on gems. Or be gold poor after buying gems at expensive rates. Enter Anet. End every email or corporate statement with a “Be sure to buy gems to convert to gold.” Even more money for Anet.

Unless you have information no one else has, and making cryptic comments does not equal " I KNOW where the money goes." MY understanding is, any money obtained in the gem store, goes to NCSoft.
Then they decide how to divvy the goods. I find it highly unlikely that none of that goes to NCSoft’s stockholders, and that ALL of it, goes into Anet’s game design.
As I said, unless you KNOW ( Platonic definition of knowledge please) something we do not? If you do…please share :-)
No it gets booked through ANet first. Eventually it ends up in NCSOFT’s pockets but ANet is a subsidiary so the money has to go through them first. Carbine on the other hand isn’t, it’s studio under NCSOFT directly.

What’s most likely is that the monetary arrangement is similar to that of every other business where there is a corporate entity involved. Typically, this will involve the part of the company or the subsidiary having a budget which they use to produce the revenue. Revenue in excess of the budget will be used for things like unexpected expenses (the AC needs an emergency repair), bonuses and the like, and profit — which accrues to shareholders. Depending on the relationship, the budget is likely to require parent company approval, and emergency expenses may have to be cleared up the chain. Bonuses will typically be allocated based on ANet meeting targets set by NCSoft. These will typically be revenue targets.
Since ANet is a subsidiary, revenue collected is likely to remain in the company until expenses have been met, with the remainder going to NCSoft. It is not efficient to transfer all the money to the parent, then have them transfer it back to pay expenses.
So, yes, it’s more likely that the money does not all go to NCSoft — but that the profit does. Regardless, I doubt that solid gold Humvees are the result for anyone in this chain.

I remember a story told me when I was a child, Int involved a Goose that lay Golden eggs.
The Moral was that sometimes it’s best to collect the ggs the goose lays one at a time, instead of trying to open it up, and get them all at once.

or are Corporate executives just children that never learned it to begin with?
