I will remind myself of this thread when I read that fairy tale again about the great GW2 community that is so much nicer than the ones in those evil standard mmorpg :P

Totally agree. If there is one thing that GW2 has taught me it is that you need a sub to have a decent game experience.

I will never play a game without a sub again after this one. It had such potential but was ruined by the gem store.

good thing I treat the gem shop like a gold shop then so it doesn’t ruin my experience. most of the time i just ignore it.

I wouldn’t worry.

Guild Wars, a 9 years old MMORPG, is still going and that game is still B2P only with NSA. Expect Guild Wars 2 to have the exact same story.

Oh don’t get me wrong, I have no doubts that Arenanet knows what they’re doing and will continue to keep this game with no subscription fee. It’s the people trying to argue for one that I cannot for the life of me understand.

Yeah….this is NOT going to happen.

  1. I’m pretty sure they would be LEGALLY bound to refund the purchase price of the game to every player that asked (or face a class action lawsuit….that I would join).
  2. Players would quit in mass (including myself).

My one HARD rule in gaming is NEVER play a subscription fee for a game.

You can spend 15 euro worth of gem each month, take that as your sub fee.

One of the main reasons that I bought Guild Wars 2 in the first place was that it has no subscription fee. Trust me, if WoW was subscription-free, I would be there right now and not playing GW2. Sure, maybe I’m cheap, but consider: how many people are like me, unable to afford a $15 monthly subscription fee? All of these people saw “Pay once, play forever!” and went, “Ooh!”. I, for one, would not be able to continue to play if a subscription fee was added, and I’m 100% sure that there would be a massive decrease in the GW2 playerbase as well. ArenaNet probably makes more right now from Gem store purchases than it would if it lost 50% of players and added a sub fee.

to all guys saying P2P suck. first all those games like rift, swtor. eso… it is not the sub fee which brought them down, it was low quality of content and support that made people to say the game does not worth a sub. AND none of them is actually free i played them all.
there are successful sub based games like FINAL FANTASY XIV with over 2 million subscribers, why i am not there because i do not like the graphics and on top of all unholy trinity. but the game is pretty good over all for many people.
IT IS ALL ABOUT YOU. ask for better game and have will to pay for good game.

So you admit that quality content has no correlation to subscription fee?

why some of you reply to a post you did not read or did not understand. I SAID IT in my very first post that quality of content and support need a lot of improvement and if it takes sub fee for much better quality content i am willing to pay for better not for same game.

But then you listed games that have a subscription fee and admit that those are low quality. So why do you think that if ANet add subscription, quality becomes better?

$15 is trivial. I pay more for my internet, cable, and cell phone subscriptions and yet, I don’t feel like I’m “missing out” if I don’t use them constantly. I have no problem paying for services that I value, and WoW is one of those services which have given me YEARS of entertainment and memories. Worth every penny.

And that works for you. I have a friend in a 6 figure job and since his free time is limited simply won’t play a subscription MMO. But he did buy GW2 when it came out. Not sure if he’s found the time to play it yet …

How many p2p games were succesfull ? And dont name that “One”…All other p2p’s have failed miserably and will continue to do so.

EQ1..EQ2… still around.. Not sure that " going f2p" qualifies as " Failing abysmally" that is simply the stigma applied by someone that feels for a game to be " a great game" it has to have a subscription Model.

The One… is a freak of time and place… being at the right place, at the right time, to greet a Bunch of casual players with a simple MMO. That game cannot be used as any gauge. it would be nice if games were content with " pre-That game" membership numbers, and put out a quality game, instead of chasing the gold ring that “That game” has dangled over publisher’s heads. As long as the publishers and the " investors" influence game design we will get WoW clone after WoW clone.

Only when game designers can get the publishers to understand " 5 Million to 10 million players is not realistic. " Only then will we get the diversity and the quality of gaming we had before That Game….simplified the genre.

I sincerely doubt that as Long as Investors are looking at “That Game” as some model, while they get a gleam of gold In their eye… we will ever get a game worth a subscription. Which is Ironic.

I don’t think any previous subscription based game in the west went totally F2P. They all seem to have a “gold” or “vip” option that’s similar to the previous subscription’s price, maintaining the unlock on what became paywalled for F2P. They also toss in a minor proxy currency stipend for their cash shop.

The problem with Guild Wars 2 trying to add expansions, I think, is that the base game is ‘too strong’. And, they can’t just backload the game and hide new content and higher levelcap behind a paygate.

The classes are too diverse and well-balanced to add new classes to the game. I doubt they’ll add new races or weapon types either, for similar reasons. Then again, a new set of weapons balanced against the current set might actually be cool (though it might require renaming the current weapons in case there’s a risk of redundancy).

The original GW managed to launch several expansions without having paygate problems by having each expansion be able to stand alone or play with each other fairly, by introducing a complete suite of classes capable of mixing and hybriding with the normal ones, a completely new storyline independent of any previous ones, and a new set of maps.

I don’t see Guild Wars 2 being able to do any of this.
