option to toggle off wings
If it’s on you, then just hide the back piece. If it’s on other people, use the basic character models.
They are a back-piece, so you can go into equipment and toggle “show/hide” your back-piece

Sure you can.
If you’re in PVP, use basic character models.
If youre in PVE, jump to another map.
If you’re in WVW, server transfer.
I wish I could hide all the asura too, now that you mention it.

They just release and we’re already getting people complaining about them? I’m honestly kind of surprised. But, anyway, Azure said it best up there. Those are your best options as of now, but if you have a suggestion, lay it out constructively and tell us how it would work! That way, we can all pitch in and make the suggestion better

I thought Azure was just being sarcastic. Either that or he made really bad points :P
Basic models aren’t -to my knowledge- usable in soloQ, the mode most people play by a large margin.
Jumping maps in PvE only works if there are overflows and considerung evereybody and their mum’ running around with those things chances are you will run into a ton of players wearing them, even on other maps.
WvW server transfer? It’s not like they sell those wings on some servers and not on others. They are everywhere. Plus, why should I pay actual money just to avoid something incredibly immersion breaking. As if it’s the players fault ANet can’t create artistically coherent armor pieces.
As for suggestions: Option to hide other player’s back pieces. This is something incredibly important for players with weaker machines.
When doing worm and teq, commanders on TS always urge players to hide their fractal and other backpieces as it can crash slower PCs when added to the large amount of players in a zerg.
That way, people with faster machines don’t have to hide their armor just because others have bad PCs as they can just do it themselves.
Additionally, players who dislike certain backpieces can hide them while people who do like them still can feel pretty.
Everybody wins.

No idea what you’re talking about; I’m sure all of these people supporting the game and its developers for fluffy feather wings are a travesty.
Oh. You could also ask players to hide their wings because their sense of fashion is offensive to you.

an option like this:

Right now, the best you can do is ignore it (or follow Azure’s suggestions :P).
It’s likely to be only a temporary problem though. It’s the “new toy” phenomenon. Because it’s all sparkly and new, it’s hyped up and everybody wants to show it off. In a few weeks time, people will get bored of their look and wear something different (or the next “new toy”).
What I described happened with the Replica Job-o-tron. People complained (a lot) about them being everywhere and hearing “Turbo-mode-ENGAAAAAGE” all the time. Much fewer people wear them now, though

You can’t hide it. Nor should you really be able to, seeing as that would basically remove a massive selling point to back items.
Meanwhile, in a less greedy point of view, we got the option to turn off the sound from players-bought musical instruments, despite how that “would basically remove a massive selling point” of those items.
Same with armors and outfits. Those can be bought on the Gem Store, yet we can still hide them. I’m happy that this is one of the issues in which ArenaNet, at least, sees reason.
As for suggestions: Option to hide other player’s back pieces. This is something incredibly important for players with weaker machines.
I agree. I wished the basic character model would not only hide players’ armors, but also backpacks and weapons (replacing those with place holders, just as with the armor). This would increase performance and reduce visual pollution.
Cutting on peoples’ wings would be mean though. :o
and it’d have to be on all wings too, so Ranger bird pets would make no sense.
I want the option to hide silly hats, faces that I think are ugly, real world endangered animals (I find it offensive that they can be hurt), chickens, statues of the gods, anyone wearing a trench coat, and any piece of equipment that uses any colors that I don’t like.
I want ANet to put in a checkbox to hide all male Norns with pink dyed armor and wearing bunny ears who are dancing anywhere in Tyria and I am completely reasonable in asking ANet to put in this option for me.
ANet may give it to you.

Sarcasm works better when you know more about what you’re talking about. There is an option to hide all those things and more. It’s mysteriously missing the ability of hiding backpacks and weapon skins. It’s only logical that it would be expanded to include those skins as well.

Well.. they came basically out of nowhere and brought something to the game that reminds people of mmos they either left and\or despise (like for me it reminds me of aion what i happen to hate), totally clashes with their sence of fashion or just really clutter the screen or clip right into your char…whats something i cant stand. Not sure how to describe it… but i do tend to have some sort of “respect distance” between my char and others if i can help it like in boss trains, standing arround a bank or merchant or just walking arround some char rather then through and so on..i guess you get the idea. Since the wings are in the game i usually got 1 or 2 pairs right in my face and its really annoying. I mean i wont judge.. tastes differ and everybody should do what they want but it sure is annoying to have them always in your face while not even wearing or owning the skin yourself, especially if they arent your taste at all. I surely see where people are coming from if they ask to have a way to hide them. How to fix it? Heck i dont know.. but i dont expect any “fix” with that everybody would be happy anyways so i gonna swallow it…

This brings up what may be a valid point. Back in CoH, some people had “raiding costumes”. No capes, no auras, no complex parts. It made things go smoother for the 50 person “Hami Raids”.
Perhaps we should suggest that the “use basic models” option should use default weapons and hide backpacks as well. I’m not overly fond of the idea, but there are performance reasons for it.
As for the wings themselves? I’m sure they’ll become less popular soon enough, and the ones that keep them will more likely be the ones that look good with them. We just need the “new toy smell” to wear off, first.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.
You know a game is aesthetically dead when its cash shop is getting way over board with cosmetics and players are totally ok with it.
Big black angel wings are definitely enough of a reason to abandon the style ship once and for all since more ridiculous stuff is bound to be introduced to the shop. Better start not to care anymore about what you loved about this game’s aesthetics since you will only get heartbroken.
Also see TF2 for a similarly tragic fate of a once aesthetically pleasing and coherent game.
Oddly, I don’t see the wings as a breaking of GW2’s style. I’d say they make more sense for the game than some of the stuff that’s been in the game from day 1.
And let’s be honest for a minute. In real life, there are people that strap on fake wings (that don’t look as good as these do) and go out in public. And these are fairly normal people, generally. Our characters are NOT normal people. They are the slayers, the doom bringers, the unexpected saviors. They are the ones that strap on some armor, pick up an axe, and march off into a land infested with undead. They are the ones that toss on an old coat, then walk off into the wilderness to find deadly animals to turn into hunting partners. They are the ones that dress up in a few scraps of lace and frills, then march off into the frozen wastelands armed only with an old stick with a crystal stuck on the end.
Our characters are NOT normal people. I’d be hard pressed to call them sane, even. For some of them to be walking around with fake wings isn’t all that odd, and I doubt anyone in Tyria would really complain.
… except the Tengu. They’d totally complain.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.
Im with you bro,i always hated WINGS,no matter which game i played.Sadly we will have to bite a lip and deal with it cause they are gonna stick around, and we will get them in many and MANY colors. Fairy Wars begins…
I don’t like the wings, or many back pieces for that matter, but what I wish I could not see are particle effects due to lag issues.
80s: Necro x2, Ranger, Warr, Guardian x2, Ele x2, Mes, Thief
Its quite simple to fix that: basic character models no longer show individual backpieces.
/done.
Its weird that this isnt already the case seeing how basic character models are supposed to be standardized.
Its weird that this isnt already the case seeing how basic character models are supposed to be standardized.
I think it has to do with the fact that there’s at least two Engineer kits that leave them empty handed, so you need to see backpacks to see what “weapon” they have equipped.

So panda hats – and hylek hats, and quaggan hats – and 8bit console game weapons from SAB are totally ok and fit the aesthetics for everyone but some wings (that were in GW1) are not?

You know perfectly well that those specific features aren’t actually in the game. The fact that you can accomplish the things you listed is simply a side effect of a feature with a completely different intended purpose. Low-impact character models were added as a way to provide a performance boost for people who need or want it, and to ensure that there’s something the game can load quickly on zone-in, so that we don’t have the old problem of people being invisible for half a minute when you first go to a new area. What they were not put into the game for, is to shield people with sensitive eyes from things they think they’re too cool to look at. The fact that, simply as a result of how it works, you can use it for that purpose doesn’t mean that you are automatically owed everything that you see as a logical extension of that side effect, as if it were a deliberate feature. Now, if they’d actually created individual options for hiding specific things in the world or on other characters that you didn’t like looking at and had inexplicably left backpacks out of it, then it would be a logical extension of the feature for the reasons you state. But they didn’t. So it isn’t. Much like sarcasm, condescension works better when you know what you’re talking about.
As it happens, I do actually think backpacks should be hidden as a result of turning on the low-impact character models, for performance reasons. If someone’s using that option, resources are obviously at a premium, so anyone having to resort to simplifying models in that way shouldn’t be forced to see extras like packs. To be honest, I think it wouldn’t hurt to take it a step further and provide generic models for weapons (a sword, a greatsword, a staff, etc.) so that the game doesn’t have to load those either.
What, I don’t agree with is this ridiculous idea that people should be able to hide a bunch of individual, specific things on other characters, or anywhere else, simply because they don’t conform to their own personal taste. All this crying about wings reminds me of the people in a church I grew up in that thought they were crusading for good sense and decency by trying to ban the wearing of backward baseball caps in any of the places they could bully the town council and local police into trying to enforce it, completely failing to realize how petty childish they came across.
If you go to a party and several people are wearing hideous, glitter-encrusted Hawaiian shirts, you and your friends are perfectly free to agree that they’re ugly as Hell and the people wearing them should know better, and either go enjoy your drinks in a different room, or leave altogether. But the moment you start demanding of your hosts that special accommodations be made in order to ensure that you retain unlimited access to the party without having to look at shirts that displease you, then you’ve crossed the line from amateur fashion critic to obnoxious, entitled jerk.
Seriously, this whole “my taste is too refined to look at wings” thing is getting stupid. I’m a role player, for crying out loud. I dream up elaborate back stories and create characters based on new outfit ideas. I was one of the knuckleheads who lobbied for the walk toggle before the game was released. I use the term “immersion” non ironically. If I can deal with a few wannabe angels without flipping my lid, anyone can. Especially since they don’t even look the least bit out of place in this game. Far less so than some of the other absurdities that’ve come out of the gem store or the Mystic Forge.
“My word, when I first saw these wings I was so aghast that my monocle popped out and shattered, I assure you I shall petition ArenaNet to ban them. And for a replacement monocle. "
Everyone has something they dislike in game in a month there’ll be far fewer of them.
The best option for Anet is to add backpieces, minis and weapons to their culling algorithm just like they did with armor skins. It’s buffling how they left out those things and when you use the lowest quality settings you can still see minis, weapons and backpieces but NOT armor given that weapons have the most particle effects.
Add placeholders for everything so people with the lower settings can get some needed fps boosts in crowded areas.

I can “hide” cosmetic armors of other people by using lower graphic settings. Weapons, miniatures and back items seem to have a very high priority for some reason.
These wings are very obtrusive and we really should have an option to not display them.

While true that is not specifically targeted at the cosmetic armors, but rather the graphics as a whole and used in order for people with less powerful computer to be able to play somewhat decently.
I doubt quite much that people use that option in any large regard unless they have to.

Also don’t forget that people buy instruments to play in game, and we have the option to turn them off. These wings to me are the equivalent of somebody standing in my way all day trying to learn twinkle twinkle on a trumpet.

Legendaries and expensive weapon skins with lots of particle effects, large sized miniatures with lots of animations / details and huge backpieces are affecting graphics performance more than armor, yet they are not hidden at lower settings.
I don’t agree with the OP to have an option to hide them at any settings, but I think it makes sense to hide everything when using lower graphic settings and not just armor skins.

I can “hide” cosmetic armors of other people by using lower graphic settings. Weapons, miniatures and back items seem to have a very high priority for some reason.
Weapons, miniatures and back items cannot be customised. They therefore use up a lot less of whatever system resources are supposed to be being saved by the lower graphics settings.
Ok, on a serious note. Realistically, I do not expect such option to be implemented by Anet exactly for the reason lordkrall stated, it will hurt the sales (even if the current sale is over, the wings will return to the store, as well as their different coloured versions, so we won’t see less of them in game, rather other way around).
So all I can do is to try to kitten off wing lovers by telling them they are ugly. Yes, guys, you are. Ok, back to the serious note again.
There is a lot of other “huge” or “not lore friendly” or whatever else stuff, but none of that yet generated requests to have an option to toggle them off.
Anet could see it coming (I bet they saw) and while an option to “toggle it off” was not an option, they could at least try to make them less obtrusive/obstructing.
For example, by tilting the wings back a bit, so they stay at about 45 degrees angle, so at worst the character wearing them is at least twice as big, not triple in size.
But, judging by those lame animations, the wings were just a quick baked moneysqueeze. And I bet they won’t modify them since the outcry will, well, out cry those who would like the change.
So, all we can do is just deal with it. Or stop worrying and learn to love the wings, equip them on your hugest characters and go hide other winged chars under your wings. I bet they will appreciate it! :p
