having played the game for a long time I have noticed most of the maps in the game are set on a massive layer of water and all the water in the maps is at or below that layer. I believe some farcry games have a map maker like this. does this mean we will never see a map with water we can swim in above that level? does the map making program not support water above that level? I know southsun has cosmetic waterfalls above that level, but nothing we can swim in. I think it would neat to come across a pool in a cave high in a mountain or something like the caves in southern timberline falls.

tl;dr can we have water(swim-able) above the water level on maps?

The whole map is a huge ‘’water container’’ if you fall under texture you can see in many dungeons and some maps too.

I think, judging from the last of content in the last 6 months, that since EOTM the map developers are working on GW3 which according to rumors may be using the Unreal engine.

to answer the OP.
you should think in reverse, water isn’t put on the land side of the map, the map is water and land is created to make walk-able platforms.
in older editors we needed to create everything manually with something called brushes, later on editors because more advanced and water became the default brush in the game.

so to plainly answer your tl;dr question, you can make a whole map without any land and make a map filler with water.
all a map like this requires are the basic things like something called a sky map (that’s a texture showing distance and the sky) and the bottom dressed with whatever the mapper wants to add, this can be something as simple as seaweed and as complicated as a huge sunken ship.

hope this is clear enough, i can at times explain things quite hectic >_<

Where did you hear about GW3? Or are these just rumours with no basis?

Problem is, when it is released we have Unreal 6 that uses DirectX 18 on 128 Bit Windows

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

Whether they can make water above a certain level, I don’t know, although I’d like to say anything is possible. But since you seem interested in the mapmaking, I’d recommend you look at:
http://www.twitch.tv/guildwars2/c/3283865
; at least starting at the 4:00 mark. It’s a livestream where Anet talks about how they created the Skyhammer map, and you can get a glimpse of some of the mapmaking tools they used.

No they really bought 2 license of the unreal 3 engine. Google it.

NCSoft bought them, not ANet. And NCSoft already used Unreal for Lineage 2, and they also used CryEngine for AION .. so that has nothing at all to do with Guildwars.

Here you go, water above global water level:

I don’t see any problem in adding as much water volumes to a map as required.

20 level 80s and counting.
