Map chat is essentially a public area where you don’t have to talk about non-game stuff but you are welcome to do so.
People who don’t like it can report you and cry about it and nothing will happen to you since it isn’t in the rules anywhere, and would be opening up a big can of worms for nothing.
There fixed.

“i’m american therefore i have a right to do stuff on the internet”.
yeah.. but I don’t.

I don’t understand… how hard is it to turn on chat until you’ve seen it? Or better yet, just don’t log in and go watch it. It’s pretty kitten simple in my opinion. It’s also the internet, there will be spoilers for everything everywhere. Society can not cater to every individual just because you MIGHT find out something about something you didn’t know about.

And let me answer this fact, if you found out a spoiler and the whole movie, I bet you’d still go watch the movie and enjoy it.

It’s also just a movie. Regardless if you watched it or didn’t watch it, your life will not be changed. You’ll still just go work like normal. Wake up the next day like normal. And do you normal things, like normal. So relax.

You are using a lot of very strong language for something that is a very minor offense.

And a two-week chat ban is a very minor punishment for an offense that might push people away from the game.

You may want to live in a world with pillows for walls,

Who said anything about that? I think it’s a kitten move to spoil things and I also think that it might be a smart business decision for ANet to put their foot down about it, but I assure you I’m not emotionally involved in this. I don’t want Star Wars spoiled for me but it won’t be the end of the world if it is. Turning off map chat for a few days sounds like probably the way to go for me.

I realize the cool thing to do these days is attack other people’s toughness but really, I’m just trying to have a conversation about this. So here, let me be cool for a moment: are you sure you’re not the one who wants to live in a pillow world where no one can ever discuss community standards? Because that’s sure what it looks like.

It is not a minor offense to punish somebody for something if it has never been stated anywhere that you will be punished for doing something. Now, if they change the rules to include something like this, then it would be perfectly reasonable.

As for the pillows for walls comment, I apologize. I don’t even like Star Wars, myself, don’t know how long it’s been out, or anything. But I do think it’s silly that people are always calling for somebody to save them from things when they have already been given the tools for protecting themselves from such “slings and arrows” as minor as these.

And actually, since you bring it up, I, personally, fall quite into the opposite camp. I would rather live in a world where nothing was a surprise, and people called me names. Than live in a world where I had to worry every time I opened my mouth if I was going to hurt somebody’s feelings.

And this is, I think, what would be better to address since it can’t be avoided without a detriment to the actual game.

I’m not sure if maybe setting up a system to select from different LFG options, instead of just allowing people to write anything in the field would be a good idea. But it’s an idea worth using if people are abusing the LFG in ways like this.

If people are posting spoilers in the LFG (and not part of an actual LFG but as a trolling post) then they can be reported for LFG abuse and maybe they’ll get a suspension.

There’s nothing wrong with asking people to be considerate and not spoil newly released media. It’s the polite thing to do. It’s not hard to create a party to discuss the movie with others who have seen it. Ask in map chats if anyone would like to discuss it and there you go.

That said, I think infractions would seriously depend on the context. There’s a huge difference between trolls who are intentionally spoiling and someone who is just so excited they want to talk about it with everyone. I think most would fall into the latter category. They probably don’t consider it spoiling so it doesn’t occur to them and when they’re met with harshness they may respond in kind.

Similar things happened at HoT release and some of the guilds I’m a member of had to frequently ask people not to discuss the HoT story in guild chat. None had malicious intent. They were simply engaged in the story and wanted to share their ideas and talk about what had happened. It still ruins it for others.

If I’ve seen a movie that I liked, I’ll want to talk about it. It’s not my fault that someone else is the one who doesn’t want spoilers.

However it would be your fault if you were discussing the spoiler in a public space with a loudspeaker pressed firmly to your lips. Mapchat is not a private discussion, it’s public, so ideally you should…

Have some common sense.

… and talk about your movie with others in a more private forum. Squad chat is a perfectly viable way for someone to establish an impromptu private channel with dozens of other people who have already seen the movie or don’t mind spoilers.

Of course people are going to talk about it, and that’s not their problem. If the person with the issue has options to stop seeing potential spoilers, then utilise them and quit whining. There are more than enough options in-game for that already.

The opposite is true as well: there are in-game options to discuss something without disturbing others, so why isn’t it their fault for not doing so? How is it reasonable to blame someone for doing something as passive and innocuous as reading the public chat of a game that has absolutely no relations to the Star Wars franchise?

I’m not a fan of SJWs telling people how to behave, but that doesn’t mean the answer is to abandon common decency and act like a jerk in public.

Expecting common courtesy from everyone on the internet is just silly. Of COURSE people are gonna spoil it….if not in GW2, then on forums….Twitter….Facebook…Youtube and Twitch comments….it’s going to happen.

If spoilers bother you so bad and the movie is so important to you, then go SEE the movie instead of playing GW2. o.o

If you can’t for some reason, then the only way to avoid the spoilers, is to avoid their source. You can not stop people from blurting out spoilers or being jerks. You CAN avoid seeing the spoilers if you avoid the places they are posted. But even then it wouldn’t stop some random you pass on the street from blurting it out, or overhearing someone talking about it on the phone. Instead of demanding everyone that spoils a movie be banned…..just go see the movie.

People talking about new things in map chat for the sole purpose of spoiling them are trolls and like to spoil people’s fun. I wish this was reportable, as it is a form of trolling.

However, people discussing the movie lightheartedly… I have no problem with this. Of course, it would be nice if they took their discussion to a more private chat if possible, to save those who do read map chat and don’t want things spoiled.

But if something is this important to you, it’s in your best interests to keep chats off or see the movie as soon as possible. There becomes a point where it becomes your own problem, not everybody else’s.

I have a theory that might protect some people against the spoilers though. If you have seen the movie, and see somebody write a spoiler in map-chat (and know it to be true), also write spoilers that are incorrect or just plain silly, to try and mask the correct spoiler.

Also, what’s the arbitrary time period to not spoil things in map-chat? 1 week? 2 weeks?

It seems like some of those mocking the people who don’t want spoilers may not understand why they don’t want them. After all, not everyone values the surprise of a new story in book or film.

The thing is, for those of us who do have some things we want to experience fresh, having them spoiled can’t be undone be the source innocent or malicious. That’s why it’s only polite to avoid broadcasting spoilers in Map chat and why those who haven’t yet seen the movie are hamstrung by the need to avoid all the game communication channels. Putting spoilers in LFG, well, that’s clearly done to wreck the fun of others, the LFG is not a discussion venue.

I saw the movie today and have happily turned my Map and Say back on and feel comfortable using LFG now. But I just had a few days of not being able to do HoT metas, join squads, or participate in the dev Wintersday event because some people think it’s fun to be mean. It wasn’t enjoyable. Even if hiding in Bell Choir did make me a nice hunk of gold from the booze.

I’m usually fine with getting some reveals on movies or books in advance (I watched a lot of trailers for this movie, for example, and am happy to say they stimulated interest without giving away the plot). Yet there are some things I want to experience in pristine fashion, eg any new book by Connie Willis, and as someone who saw the original Star Wars in the theater when it first came out I really wanted to repeat that oh-wow! feeling it gave (I did! From the first moment to the last, this movie delivered). Perhaps those of you who don’t share that excitement of discovery can find some empathy for those who do and not ruin their fun on purpose?

I know something something just want to watch the world burn something something free speech something something grow up and get a thick skin … so please note I am not whining, I am not expecting everyone to be decent human beings, I did take precautions against spoilers even in communication channels that should have said nothing about the movie. I simply hope that at least one person who thought spoiling was fun will sit back and think a moment and decide they don’t want to be a jerk.

Being nice to other people gets you so much further in life, after all. They tend to be nice back to you.

Star Wars spoilers seem to be everywhere at the moment. I found out the ending by reading an article on sea bird conservation which seemed to have absolutely nothing to do with Star Wars until they suddenly brought it up in one paragraph – with a summary of the final scenes of the movie in the caption to the picture above.

What annoyed me about that one was that although one of the filming locations was relevant to that article there was absolutely no need for them to mention the plot at all. They could have simply said the island they were writing about was a location in the film and not mentioned what happened there.

But people throwing out ‘spoilers’ in GW2 (and other places) actually backfired for me. There were so many contradictory ones, or ones that couldn’t all be true (unless they made this movie entirely to kill off every single character anyone had ever heard of and start over with completely new ones in the next film) that I ceased to believe any of them.

And then I saw the movie and it turned out only 1 was actually real.
