we need more char slots
I think 5 is fair. Gives you one for each race and you have the option to expand upon this with Gems. Frankly we aren’t paying to play so GW2 has to have some way to make money and wanting to play with more than 5 slots is a fair way to get that money. Keep in mind that there is also cost to housing your toon on a server as well.
Remember GW1, Prophecies, where you only got 4 charslots, but had 6 professions?
Seriously though, it’s enough for each race, plus you can buy more from the cash-shop.
I have 14 character slots now.
Pretty sure you can afford one more with the in-game gold to gem system.

4/6 > 5/8

I have 9 character slots at the moment, all bought with in-game gold. Stop being lazy.
By the time you have five level 80s you should easily be able to earn enough gold to buy the necessary gems for additional character slots.
We DO need more character slots. Fortunately, ArenaNet has provided a convenient and easy method for obtaining them. You can either make a cash purchase for gems, or transform Gold earned in-game into gems, and buy additional character slots from the in game store.
It’s that easy!
I should know, I’ve bought 9 extra slots on my first account and 3 extra slots on my second account! And I’m certifiably a moron! So I know you can do it too!
You can buy them. By the time you fill up all the slots you start with you should have enough gold to buy some more or you could buy it with cash. This game doesn’t have a sub so its not a huge deal to pay for extra character slots.

Well, while I do agree that you can get character slots from the gem store to get those last professions, I do still think it is rather bad that we have to pay for them.
Other games in the genre give you more than enough character slots to make all their classes. Games like WoW, Aion, Rift, Tera, SW:ToR, etc heck even pretty much most F2P games give you enough character slots to make all your classes, without having to make you spend extra money to unlock them.
GW2 for some reason, being a new game, went kind of backwards on that. They promise innovation and new ideas, yet they downgraded completely normal features like this. Limiting your character slots to only 5, when there is 8 professions. Meaning you can only make 5 of the professions unless you spend more money or farm gold ingame to get the other 3. While all these other games give you more than enough character slots to make all their professions/class and don’t limit you by pushing you to the cash shop to experience the rest of the content.
So yeah, while you can still buy them or farm gold to buy them, it is still rather sad that they are not already available to you.

Gems are cheap to buy with cash, and the character slots don’t expire in 30 days. That’s my argument.
I just wanted a AAA MMO with no sub made by ArenaNet. And it’s awesome.”

Wait…what expires after 30 days?

I believe he is talking about how F2P games have items in the cash shops that have time limits on them. They sell you something like a fancy outfit for 20 bucks, but put a time limit on how long you can use it (for instance, 30 days). Then you have to buy it again or you lose it permanently.
Luckily, there is nothing in GW2 like that, and hopefully, there never will be.

The Expiring could also be a comparison between a monthly subscription and gems to buy a character slot.
Anyway, for my characters buying char slots has been something they work hard for as they want to ‘recruit’ more people. I have now almost enough gems for the 8th slot and the crew is eagerly waiting to meet the representative of the last profession: Thief.
I don’t know what I wil do in the future, maybe I will buy more. But these seven, soon to be eight, will have me happily occupied for a couple of months at least.
You’re both right.

Keep in mind that you only have enough character slots in TOR if you are subscribed. Same goes for LotRO and DDO. City of Heroes/Villains was the same way.
Games that don’t have a monthly fee have to make their money somehow. And still, my earlier points still stands. I’ve not paid a single dime outside of my initial purchase and have 9 character slots, 3 bank tabs, 25 transmutation stones, a variety of town clothing, etc.
I got it all through playing the actual game and using the gold I made to buy gems.
We don’t need more slots anymore, seeing as Anet is consequently discouraging us from playing alts at all.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
800 gems
its either
usd 10
or
17 in game gold ++
buy them
use them

Man’s got a point

Every single one of those games you listed started as pay to play and charged money for months. Sure they’re free to play now, but they also took $15 a month (the price of 1.5 character slots) every single month.
If you played SWToR since launch and 7 motnhs in wanted another character slot, you’d haev paid by that time $90 just to play the game. Right now, you can in fact use SWToR as a free to play game…as long as you don’t want to do anything. In fact, many subscription games even have a cash shop in addition to a monthly fee.
Guild Wars 2 gives you five slots, one for each race. Not everyone needs to play every profession. In addition, of the games you listed, it’s the only one that allows you to farm gold in game to get it, instead of using real world cash.
I think you might want to look up backwards in the dictionary, I’m not sure you know what it means.

I’m sorry, but did you pay monthly for character slots? No, you didn’t. I don’t have a WoW sub anymore and I still have all 11 of my character slots (that’s not counting the extra 50 or so you can make on other realms as well). They aren’t gone because I am no longer paying monthly. Heck you can play WoW for free now and still get 11 character slots. Just like all those other games. You didn’t pay monthly for character slots.
And GW2 is in the ranking of these top P2P MMOs. When these top MMOs are giving you all slots to make all professions/classes and then some, then GW2 is lacking in that department. It doesn’t matter if you are paying monthly or not.
What was it they advertised? Oh that’s right. GW2 offers you all the benefits and features of a P2P AAA MMO, without the monthly fee. So why am I limited on character slots when a P2P AAA MMO has them? So much for all the benefits and features of a P2P AAA MMO right? Instead they limit us to 5 and make us use the cash shop if we want to experience the rest of the content. Because that is what AAA MMOs do right? Oh that’s right. They don’t.
So yes, they did go backwards on that feature. While other AAA MMOs are giving us all character slots for all professions/classes, GW2 went in reverse on that feature and limited our character slots to only 5 out of 8 professions.

Need vs Want. You need one character slot. You want more character slots.

In GW1 you could not use ingame gold to buy char slots.

actually i didnt know that u could buy more char slots if i knew that i would’nt of posted this XD i cant see the option any where
azkiel, you can find it in the gem store under upgrades.
Open the Trading Post.
Select Upgrades on the top header (far right – key symbol)
Character Slot Expansion – 800 gems.
:)
I think that we should get a new character slot or two with the purchase of an expansion. When that is an option.
Otherwise you already have two options.
1- If the game is on sale: Amazon had it on sale Christmas day only for 29.99usd. Then you can get 5 new char slots cheaper than buying 5*800gems.
2- Or wait until Anet puts the char slots on sale again as they did a month or so ago.

Now try going to look and see what all the things you CAN’T do in WoW as a FtP.

In GW2 we can do EVERYTHING, we can level to max lvl and are not hindered, so they try to make a little money off people wanting 10 alts!! God forbid a company that actually needs to make a profit to stay in business HOW DARE THEY!!!

But GW2 isn’t supposed to be compared to WoW’s Starter Edition. It is supposed to be compared to WoW as a whole.
Anet themselves stated that GW2 will give you all the benefits and features of a P2P AAA MMO, without the monthly fee. So when you compare GW2 to WoW, you compare it to what WoW offers as a P2P game, not a F2P game. And WoW and other P2P games, don’t put limits on you that push you to their cash shop. GW2 does by limiting your slots to only 5, and making you have to use the gem store to get the other 3.
I have no problem with Anet wanting to make money. Heck, there is tons of suggestions on these forums that Anet can use to make money. But putting limits on you to push you to the gem store or else you can’t experience certain content is not the way to go.

You are not locked out of any content if you choose not to spend real life cash.

I didn’t say real life cash. I said gem store.
And yes, you are locked out of content if you don’t get those extra character slots. Cause that is three professions that you can’t play, meaning you don’t get that content. The only way to “unlock” that content is to spend real money or spend your time ingame farming gold to buy the gems for them. And still, someone still had to pay real money for those gems, so it’s not like it is free.
Either way, money has to be spent to “unlock” that content that you are missing. Whether it is from your pocket or someone else’s pocket. Gold to Gem isn’t free. Someone is still paying to get you those character slots. Meaning real money is still involved in that content that you need to unlock.
Lady Bethany Of Noh – Chronomancer – Lords of Noh [LoN]
I think it’s fair amount. Most free to play games limit how many characters you can have this isn’t new. Heck even some sub games have character limits.
I completely disagree. If being “limited” by 5 character slots is one of the compromises I have to make to play an MMO like GW2 without a subscription fee, I’ll gladly do it every time.
Well given we had 4/6 in Guild Wars 1 and now we have 5/8…. that is actually very similar amounts. Given that 4/6= 66.67% (roughly) and 5/8=62.5%, they are basically keeping the proportions of professions/character slots roughly even. I guess you can complain about -4.17% if you want… but seems unwarranted.
