Actual content??? Tyria -vs- H.O.T
Tyria on release – 25 maps + 5 race cities + LA. Long Personal Story and then Living World. Also dungeons and lots of different armors and weapons.
HoT on release – 4 maps, one of which isn’t even playable outside of event. Very short and rushed Personal Story. Maybe Living World in the future, but definitely not bi-weekly, since more than a month already passed.
Same price ( I even got GW2 for 25$ during sale).
I came to this game for exploration and solo open world content, not for timed events or raids – sorry, but WoW does raiding much better and I still have the account.

Not commenting on the rest of the post but is it fair to compare the cost of the highest priced bonus version of HOT to the lowest priced base version of the original game ?
Wasn’t the most expensive version of GW2 originally something like $150?
The deluxe Gw2 edition? you got a pet rytlock, cd with all music and a book with it. and all other stuff form the deluxe digitals, in a nice box. I got a mail with a serial code for 75 euro.
for the 100 euro HoT you get 4000 gems and basicly all other stuff you got from the 75 euro version…. which is a mini and a glider more then the 50 euro version.
BtW
Gw2 Tyria (now F2P)
- dungeons,
- fractals,
- WvW,
- 7 metaevent maps (FoR,HH,SoD,ML,SC,DT,SW),
- all PvP, except 1 map,
- Personal story ~ 40 steps spread on 8 levels
- World bosses
- Living story 2 (8 chapters of 2-4 steps ~25),
- 25 maps and
- 6 cities
- 5 races with
- 8 proffesions holding 5 trait lines each 40 in total.
GW2 HoT (40 -50 euro)
- raids, 1 leg so far. If you do not have max gear, do not bother. ~1000 gold investment to get ready
- 4 metaevent maps on (slow) timers,
- 1 pvp map,
- living story prt 3: 14 story steps
- 2 guild halls which are mosty unaffordable,
- 4 maps
- 0 cities,
- 0 races,
- 1 proffesion and specialisations total of 14 trait lines
You guess what would be the best buy…
Been There, Done That & Will do it again…except maybe world completion.

kitten , right it is! When the base version has so much content you can never run out of things to do.
The expansion (DLC I call it) is laughable in comparison.
NOT EVEN CLOSE TO THE SAME AMOUNT OF CONTENT.

Thank you, someone who understands.
There is no comparison at all. The core game gave us many fun things to do that followed a manifesto that more or less suited all players. Bi-weekly schedule of things we could do in the first 2 years and festivals that, were in most cases, epic in scope.
HoT gutted many of those systems and replaced them with a much less user friendly and costly alternative; meh. It feels less like a game now and more like a job whereas I have to watch the clock to get anything done.
Are you just gonna ignore the fact that HoT maps are way bigger and pact than core game maps, tons of new features? Also tell me on MMORPG that offers the same amount of content in expansion compare to core game with same price, HoT has so much content compare to wow expansion(first patch of course), FF14 expansion(weekly/daily dungeon token gate).

They aren’t bigger than core game maps unless you maybe take the different levels into account but upper and lower levels are not even close to complete levels in themselves. Plus effectively its only 3 maps with DS being just an event map.

HOT content is definitely not worth the premium price. I don’t play FF14 but I’ve heard feedback that there’s clearly more content than HOT. I do play swtor however and their recent xpac completely revised the whole game and was free to subscribers for the price of 1 months sub ($15) they revised the whole game and offered a story that is leagues ahead of the poor HOT story.

Seriously? Every HoT maps are at least 2-3 times the land mass of core Tyria maps, Also DS doesn’t count because it’s an event map? WHAT? Then Orr also doesn’t count as maps because they are also events maps, hell most of core Tyria are leveling zones so you might as well don’t consider they are maps too.

Take a look at a map with regard to size.
DS is pretty much just for the 1 meta event its not a complete zone you can explore like SW or Orr.

To be fair, no expansion for ANY game has had as much content as the original game because no expansion gives you 8+ new classes a 5+ new races and they almost never give you the same size/number of maps to play on. This also has to do with development time of a new game versus the development time of an expansion. GW2 was in development for well over 5 years… HoT was in development for what, 2 years at the most?
Perhaps if Anet wasn’t always trying to “fix” things that don’t need to be fixed(original skill point and book trainer system was fine, influence guild system was fine, economy “fix” aka bleed the players dry) they could have added a lot more actual content through the years.
Not commenting on the rest of the post but is it fair to compare the cost of the highest priced bonus version of HOT to the lowest priced base version of the original game ?

I didnt comment about comparing the quantity of content. I merely pointed out that comparing the highest price of HOT to the lowest (at launch) price of GW2 is a bit off.
If you are going to use the top tier price point for HOT then you should use the top tier price point for GW2 as well
So:
GW2 $150
HOT $100
Even with the correct price point comparison GW2 provided immensely more content for the price than does HOT.
Are you just gonna ignore the fact that HoT maps are way bigger and pact than core game maps, tons of new features? You’re kidding, right? I’m not a WoW fanboi by any stretch, but Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King had loads more content than HoT. I can’t comment on anything past there, because that’s as far as I went with WoW, but those two expansions were massive compared to HoT — not only in “geographic size,” but also in features.
Plus, if we look at the HoT maps, 2 of them have lots going on: VB and TD. AB is mostly “wasted space,” in that the city takes up a huge portion of the land mass. And not much goes on in that city, save for the Octovine event. So the actual playable space is really pretty small. Then there’s DS, which is mostly closed off most of the time, and which is pretty much empty, unless you’re lucky enough to get into a map that actually completes it.
HoT is actually pretty small.
Look, the HoT maps are SMALL.
Actual landmass to all the borders is smaller than half of the tyrian maps and on par with the other half, however…You cannot use the entire bottom level of a map in HoT. The bottom levels are maybe only half the map total. The mid level? only about 30% of the map is usable, the top level covers maybe 10-20% of the map. The fallacy people fall in is they think each level covers the entire map, it doesn’t…when you are on a lower level and look up, you do not see the upper levels over your head, they are on top of pillars and the like but you never go under them directly other than the occasional footpath or cave. Thus the map, actual parts you walk on and fight on and thus actually use, are far smaller than a tyrian map. They use misdirection to make the maps seem bigger but the reality is the maps are smaller on the whole.
Raids is kinda what “ruined” the game.
Raids take too much time to be done, and feel empty. They take time that should be used in other things (PvP, WvW, Dungeons) and put it into new dungeons that are just a few bosses.
After you do them there is nothing left to do, like in WoW and other raiding games.
In WvW, PvP, Dungeons, you just do them over and over again because they were fun and/or rewarding.
They need to stop doing raids, or it will end “dead” like WoW, it is just not worth it, and everyone rather have fun in other content, pve maps, pvp maps, wvw rewards, dungeon rewards
Yes there was more content in the core game than there is in the “expansion”. I put expansion in quotes, because so many people seem to think of this as a standard expansion. It’s not. It’s added stuff to the game that goes far beyond what a normal expansion adds. Not in more maps, but in a roadmap for the game ahead. It’s almost like Guild Wars 2 2.0 or something. Specializations and elite specializations are a complete rewrite of the trait system. Masteries are a complete rewrite of the post 80 progression system. Guilds now have a form of progress as well, and guild halls are entire maps.
The four maps introduced in HoT are far more complex than any previous maps in the game. Far, far more complex. They’re large, they have multiple levels and they introduce gliding and updrafts. You may not like those things but there’s evidence a lot of people do.
Anet also added raids, a combat mode and a lot of new collections, which you may or may not like. They added a boatload of new minigames (yes some of us like the adventures) they added new meta events, they added new AI, a new profession and new technology was implemented for skills of that profession.
Content is content, but the back end stuff is just as important if not more important because it changes the entire future of the game.
Some people don’t like that change and some people do. But HoT, in a lot of ways, really is a reboot of Guild Wars 2.
And once some of the bugs are worked out of that system, we’ll see just how popular it is.
And let’s not forget it’s also going to be a season pass for other changes coming. That’s part of the value too.
This is the whole reason why i haven’t got HOT yet when you compare the Core game to HOT both were 50$ base price brand new the amount of content you got for the core game is substantially greater. Now I’m not asking for Anet to make an expansion the same size as the core game. But I do not feel that HOT should be valued at $50.00 this is why I have not yet purchased HOT though I have had the game since launch. I am waiting for the price to drop or for the game to go on sale.
HOT should not have been exclusively priced at $50.00 (or higher) and packaged together with the core game.
HOT should also be available as a standalone purchase in my opinion.
I decided to wait for the expansion to launch and see if it actually had enough new stuff to merit a full price for a game and I am still on the fence about it at best.
timed event started when they released Dry Top, then Silverwaste, and then the whole HoT.
is timed event the future direction of GW2 ? no more dynamic event like the vanilla Tyria content (excl. DT and SW ) ?
Archeage = Farmville with PK

Landmass 2-3 times as big? Erm… have you looked at Brisban Wildlands or Kessex Hills? Not to mention most maps in the Shiverpeaks, like Frostgorge Sound, and maps in Ascalon, like Plains of Ashford, etc, etc, etc…
Comparing Orr to DS isn’t really fair; until you’ve progressed through the DS meta, you can’t explore half of the map. Orr only lacks temples, which doesn’t affect exploration access.
Even core Tyria maps have lore/travel value (which for explorer gamers is a huge thing), and if you think about it… the mini-games (mislabeled as adventures) threaded throughout the HoT maps are all leveling zones too. Not to mention that the only places we can both level and use HoT masteries is on the HoT maps. So technically we just have four new leveling zones!

You need to be out of your mind to expect an expansion to be as big as the core game..
Guild wars 2 is the only game where people complain about a reasonably priced expansion, the only MMO i have ever seen where people compare an expansions size to the original game(news flash, the original game took MANY MORE YEARS TO MAKE)
This community is out of its frigging mind. Compared to other fully priced expansions in other games HOT is just fine, especially if you consider how many patches and more content we will get for the price we spent.
WOD has less content than HOT has for example and recieved only a few kittenty patches, now everyone is stuck there waiting for the next expansion.
YOU DID NOT ONLY PAY FOR THE NEW ZONES, YOU ALSO PAID FOR ALL THE PATCHES TO COME. New living world seasons, new zones. New raids and who knows what else.

I’d refer you to all of the releases of Guild Wars 1 (of which only one was technically considered an expansion), but you must have done your research, so I won’t bother. This being the same company and (more or less) team, it’s not too much to ask for at least some more places to go. Not like each Guild Wars 1 release contained a full new map and story and two new professions each – along with all future patches.
But after the tiny number of new maps vanilla GW2 released before HoT, here’s hoping a lot more maps come out before the next expansion. We’re still sitting on less real-estate than Guild Wars 1: Prophecies (the very first Guild Wars release).

Funny swtor’s xpac has done exactly that as well and has added a great new story and revised every system in the game to provide a platform to move forward, significantly more than in HOT and did it for 1 months subscription.
And you know what if HOT is the future for GW2 then its not a good thing, there are significant rumblings about the increase in the grind across every aspect of the game. The player unfriendly systems have moved closer to the toxic systems of free to play games and more and more players are put off by such systems.

I came to this game for exploration and solo open world content, not for timed events or raids – sorry, (snip)
I have no idea why ANet moved from this simple concept and into the one we have now. But I’m not liking it. At all. And, after I gave up looking through LFG for a DS map, I realized I wasn’t having fun either.
With two masteries to go before I get ley-line gliding, and those jumping puzzles and MPs I can’t get without it, I’m starting to wonder: one month later and the zones look deserted after prime time?
Never a good sign.

As I own the collector’s edition of GW2 I’ll correct you on your mistake here.
The CE came with:
1. Physical Statue
2. Soundtrack
3. Artwork (with frame)
4. Making of Book
5. GW themed tin
In addition to everything the digital deluxe version did. As HoT has no physical collector’s edition you can only compare the top priced HoT to the digital deluxe GW2, both are the same price.
Unlucky since launch, RNG isn’t random

I don’t think HoT was worth anywhere near what they charged us for it but I bought it because I was so hyped to play it, true it has a lot of issues but overall I’m enjoying it.
It is true though that with every passing week Anets priority seems to be how much money they can squeeze out of us, The gem store cosmetic stuff and BL weapons are getting boring and the skins a bit samey.

I will teach you the secret steps to joining a good DS map. Listen carefully because any little mistake can ruin your chances of executing this complex technique.
1. Be in a DS map when the timer is between 1h45 and 2h.
2. Open LFG.
3. Join any one of the 10 parties that say “DS taxi” or something similar.
4. Right click your party member’s icon and click Join in their map.
I know this sounds hard, but if you manage to follow these steps, I guarantee you will find yourself in a successful DS map. Good luck.

SWToR with it’s “optional” sub, because you can’t get a second bar for skills, and you can’t hide your helm without paying a sub. You pay a lot more for your expansions in SWToR. If you want to compare, compare everything.
I don’t know a single person that plays SWToR that doesn’t sub. If you’re playing for free, you play the story and stop. After that you’re subbing. So yeah, they get $15 a month from those players and still sell them an expansion. People call Anet greedy. If only they knew.

I’m pretty sure Age of Empires isn’t an MMO and can’t really be compared to an MMORPG. You have to look at what MMORPGs are, not what other games are. I’ve been playing baseball my whole life, but they’ve yet ot release an expansion.

Well if they continue doing what they did with Guild Wars 1’s core game, sure. You bought a season pass as well as the core game, because that’s how it worked out. Indications seem to be they’re going with a hybrid living story/expansion model. Which would make this true.
What happened to the three years of free content we got pre HoT? We get the same treat here more or less

Usually if you compare an expansion to the base game, the base game will come out further ahead in content. Also don’t forget we have more content coming for HoT as content patches should be coming around at some point. To compare FF14 only just had its big content patch since Heavensward about 2 weeks ago.

FF14 as I have played obsoletes zones as you finish them. There is very little replayability assuming you play one job in it. Sure theres around 6 maps which conveniently added flying to these maps, but the amount of content added really is about as much as HoT. Zones in ff14 have the same event system as gw2. I will say HoT story has faults with pacing and not giving answers. The story while good is pretty weak as it reaches its climax.
Once you hit cap in FF14 the gear grin begins. This consisted of 2 dungeons which us ff14 players had for several months until the most recent patch along with Alexander raiding content. The raiding content has a harder mode which felt overtuned because it required gear that was time gated. The same thing players of gw2 complain about. The difference is ff14 players know this gear will eventually be obsoleted while Ascended armor in gw2 will never be obsoleted. After sometime logging in to FF14 is do my daily dungeons to acquire tokens then log off since you can only gain a certain amount in a week.
timed event started when they released Dry Top, then Silverwaste, and then the whole HoT.
is timed event the future direction of GW2 ? no more dynamic event like the vanilla Tyria content (excl. DT and SW ) ?
Events in Guild Wars 2 have always been on timers. They were never random. Back when World bosses were on set schedules, they had windows in which they would spawn. Depending on the world boss the windows had differing lengths. Other dynamic events that occurred on maps also had timers. Notice how there were champ trains and the Orr karma trains. Each event is set on a timer for when it finishes to spawn again.
For crying out loud… you all forget that we don’t have to pay a dime but the initial price! While MMORPGs like WoW pay 15$ every month and they don’t get much more content than us in their expansions. While we will continuously get more and more FREE content + progressive story. Oh and please don’t go with the “but the gem store waa-waa-waa” you can buy gems with gold and its not that expensive.

not really. world boss yes, on fixed timer. other than that they are random based on players action. i remember hopping from one server to another before the megaserver looking for temple events. their phases are not running concurrently on diffferent servers…
Archeage = Farmville with PK

These fanboys are so blind i dont even understand anymore i mean i would never compare wow to gw2 content because in wow i pay a monthly sub so there must be more content (even though WOD was a bit lackluster with new content) but still you can not compare WOD with HOT like never!
Ps: Heavensward Expansion http://ffxiv.consolegameswiki.com/wiki/Heavensward

Yeah lets not try to compare Guild Wars to Guild Wars like everyone was doing but that would be difficult so everyone tries to derail the topic to other games with monthly subs>
Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall, Eye of the North, Winds of Change, and those Mission pack deal…
The problem for everyone is GW2 isn’t GW1 so many of those people quit and in the exact same vein HoT is not Gw2 so GW2 peeps are also quitting. Like Wildstar and all those other MMO’s that dissipated into the dust of time this game is going through the exact same process and the posts are identical. The gating the lack of communication the catering to spineless masses who have done nothing but QQ for three years. If a person has sat there and complained for three years there not going to be quitting the game ever… The others though those who don’t complain and liked what we had for three years they will leave. The amount of content in HoT isn’t even half of what we got in any of the GW1 expacs and back then they didn’t even have a cash shop to bring in extra cash with in game skins well at least not till EyE anyway and I suppose they did sell expacs and character slots prior..
SWTOR 1 month sub will get you preferred status with all of the annoying restrictions removed even once you unsub.
Miranda Zero – Ele / Twitch Zero – Mes / Chargrin Soulboom – Engi

This is fallacious, a large number buy gems, for a long time I was paying more in gems than I would have for a sub. If there weren’t large numbers doing this there wouldn’t be a game.

You guess what would be the best buy…
For got one important thing just because HoT is released doesnt mean its a done deal like the core game they are gonna build on it as in more than likely more maps and content dungeons more living story thing about gw2 or any other MMO out there just because its released doesnt mean its done it persistant and always improving and evolving as we play.
So it seems I did ok not to buy this pos called an expansion?
Too bad wvw died with it though, all I cared about and it seems they kittened that one up too. :/
Your blinkered GW2 fanboism is legendary round here but please stop posting blatant lies about other games in order to try to sustain it.
HOT is no bigger than the expansions for the games you cite, in any way whatsoever!

Nothing is ever free, somebody has to pay. Yes, it is possible to buy the base game and play without paying for anything else, but if everybody did that then there would be no game. It is impossible to pay the wages and server based expenses only from the game sales. So basically the only reason why there is a game and why some people don’t need to pay besides the initial cost is that there are some people who spend way more on the game than they would have done in case of a subscription based payment model.
After spending time in HoT and constantly feeling that I have to buy gold to actually get anything or spend absurd times grinding the maps I do think that the expansion cost way too much for what it offers. I did pay more for HoT normal version than I did for the base game normal version and I pre-ordered both of them. Also, there isn’t even a comparison with other MMO-s, which give more new zones, new skills and rework their basic systems for every expansion. The talent system in WoW has changed with every expansion, if not always for the better, but it has always changed. Not to mention all kinds of other mechanics they add in.
I came to this game for exploration and solo open world content, not for timed events or raids – sorry, but WoW does raiding much better and I still have the account.
A thousand times this. GW2 has lost its character and what made it quite unique.
And I payed more in gems for upgrades like bank slots, bag slots, mats storage, hair dyes, weapons skins, armor skins, transmog charges, etc. in GW2 than I would pay for a sub for WoW for example, a game that has all those features for free. So the “GW2 is free” argument is null, unless you’re swimming in gold.

Exactly the so called upper and lower levels for all the maps are only partially used at all. In VB for instance the bottom level is covered in the traditional bottomless pits you usually find in platformers and the upper areas are just a few plots of walk able terrain with the rest being open sky. Not to mention the main part of it is pockmarked with holes granting access to the upper and lower levels which makes for a great deal of corridor sections.
Also since he brought up other games these HoT maps didn’t even come with Hearts or dungeons and patching in the raids weeks later just made things worse since a quarter of the map is LFR. Furthermore other games typically come with 6-8 maps with there expansions.
You kind of even get the feeling that Anet spent more time showboating this game at all those gameshows all summer than actually working on the game. All we had all summer was check out Hot at this "gaming related event or watch this video that cost time and money to produce to showcase content and waste money instead of a simple text based post like other games. No content for Gw2 all summer so they could prepare there speeches and presentation to build up hype just to pull it over on the unsuspected masses.

Speaking of this, WoW already showcased all the features for the next expansion and also has a closed public alpha out already, and that’s almost one year before release.
Compare that to HoT, when we didn’t know what will the druid be like until 2 weeks before release. And I wonder why…no I’m not.
