Why would more weapons be needed? What would they add to the game that isn’t already there?
Adding stuff just for the sake of adding it is usually not such a good idea.

Are you kidding me !?
Add new skills for people to use, therefore new build possibilities !?
Add weapons that some people may be fan of, and want to see their character using it ? What if someone doesnt like greatswords and hammers and would like to see their warrior or guardian using something else instead ?
It adds diversity, and its something that should have been in the game SINCE THE START. Since those are some of the “basic” weapons that are in absolutelly ever MMO ever.
Its not adding something for the sake of adding. Its adding for the sake of making justice to something that anyone that gets into this game expects it to be there. I heard it countless times (And felt it that way) When I realised there was no 2h axes or spears in the game. Everyone is like: “Wow! There are no 2h axes O_O !?”
But what would they add, gameplay-wise that is not there now?
What would a land spear add that the Warrior needs that he/she/it currently can’t do?
It is still adding stuff for the sake of adding them. A spear would not fill a niche that is not already filled.

And EVEN if they werent, who said that an expansion must only bring new game-play, and not also new skins, and things that just look cool too ? They do this all the time bringing in those new skin packs and whatnot. As you said, “Adding stuff just for the saeke of being added”
I dont know how much of a fan you are of this game. I can tell you that you can trust that I’m the HUGEST fan of gw2 out there. But that doesnt make me blind, there is a HOLE that is the lack of those weapons in the game. Or at least one of them.
Why waste resources to make tons of skins to “new weapons” like crossbows, greataxes etc.
To me it’s better to make all classes use more of existing ones (like specializations).
At example give engineer : Hammer, Mace (of hand also), Torch, Axe (of hand also).
Adding new weapon type to the game comes with huge costs of developing them.

Because there are classes tht already use all the weapons “that makes sense” for they to use. And while other classes get access to new stuff, we have nothing new to look forward to. (Guardians and Warriors mostly.)
Or you’re gonna tell me that Warriors will start using staffs as melee weapons and their new class will be called “monk” too XD ?
Thats the problem with gw2’s playerbase, they’re satisfied with minimum. THey dont want the expansions to bring in new content, they’re happy with having just access to things that are already there.
Plus. They could just have made the underwater spears to be usable on land. That would scratch out the cost of making new skins.

I am not saying it must only bring new game-play, I am just questioning if adding something that is in no way needed or will not increase the playability of the game is really needed. Especially in a situation when said addition will require massive amounts of time and resources to get done, for very little gain.
Adding new skins does not require any balancing, it does not require any new programming and so on. It basically requires an artist.

What do you mean “add something to the warrior that he doesnt arleady have?”
Firstly, spears pole-arms or whatever could very well be weapons for other classes more than Warriors. I can easilly see Mesmers or even Elementalists using them too, aswell as Guardians.
Plus, I’m not a developer. its not MY JOB to figure out new things to add to the class, its theirs. Our job is to pay, and demand things that we think the game lacks. What do you want ? For me to write down 5 skills for a pole-arm on warriors and post them here ? So I have to make the devs work on figuring out how the weapon will work too? lol.
Also, the effort to make spears be a thing as land weapons wuldnt be that big I think. Since they already have the weapons in the game. All they’d have to do is allow them to be used on land, and add animations. Thats ALL. (They do this all the time, changing animations of skills and such. Dont tell me this is huge effort.)
I am using warrior as an example..
You want them to add more weapons, in order to validate adding more weapons there should be an actual use for said weapon, that is not already filled. And as such you should supply suggestions as to what these uses could be, since you are the one that are demanding more weapons.
You can’t just take a spear and give it to someone and be done with it.
You have to come up with skills. Balancing those skills, animating those skills, making sure those skills don’t break stuff and so on. It is a rather massive effort. Why else do you think we have gotten so few skills since release?

They put effort on building an entire new map, 8 new sets of skill (Considering that every class is getting a new skillset entirelly from a new weapon.) And an entire new class with a different set of skills and traits on its own.
How making a few of the existant classes get a few new options with a new weapon would be a HUGE effort in comparsiont o what they’re already doing !? If we put it mathematically, lets say that… Land spears would be a “thing” for 4 classes. Thats 20 new skills for you to balance. Well! guess what! We’re already getting 5×8 (40) new skills, at the very least, plus new traits and a new class that haves 5 skilsl at least for each weapon it can use.
That is multiple times over the effort that it would take to make the few new skills and balance them out that land spears would bring. Sorry, its small effort in comparsion to what they’re already doing.
If they’re NOT bringing it in, I’ll just have to say that the only excuse I can think of is that they thought: “Well, we’re already bringing a new weapon option for each class! We dont need to bring also a new weapons!” Which is a sad way to think, because I’d expect Anet to want to surprise us, rather than give us just what they think its enough.
I’m a fan of the company, and a fan of this game, its very well my favorite game right now.
(edited by Crash.5362)
Yes it is a small effort compared to that. But it would increase the total effort for very little gain.
Since you still haven’t supply any example how adding these weapons would give classes something they don’t already have I will simply have to assume that you don’t have any example of it.
And as such, it is basically adding something for the sake of adding it, and thus all effort needed for it would basically be wasted on something that adds very little to the game.

I’m supposed to be a developer now ? And know what all classes do and dont do !? lol.
I have TWO characters level 80. You cant expect me to know everything that every class haves or doesnt have and build up on them on my own. Thats a developer’s work, my friend.
But if you so desire for examples, lets do this.
1- Spears (Or pole-arms, if you prefer.) could serve as a middle-range weapon. Currently, in PVP, every Warrior haves to use longbows simply because they need an option of ranged weapon for when they dont have their gap-close skills active. Spears could serve as a sort of weapon that could be used to fill this lack and take away the fact that almost all viable warrior builds include longbow.
They could make spears have plenty of gap-closers and a very descent range, allowing Warriors to actually exist without longbows in pvp.
2- Spears could come in as a brand-new hybrid between ranged and melee functioning weapon. They could have a few skills that involve throwing the spear, and others that are melee. (All weapons do that right now for Warrir, except mace and hammer, but they have only 1 throwable skill, and the rest is melee.)
That would be nice too, since Warrior really lacks ranged weapon options specially for PvP. Rifle hasnt really been viable in a long time (Though it seems they’re trying to fix that with new update.)
There you go ? A suggestion.
Now that you forced a regular, casual player to become a developper for the sake of validating your argument, what else you’d like me to do ?
(edited by Crash.5362)
No, you are not supposed to be a developer. But you are demanding that stuff is added, and thus you should also supply an actual good reason and a way to validate spending the time and resources on adding said things.
So basically a completely new class of weapon? How will that be balanced around the rest of the weapons and professions? What would other professions gain for it? Is it even needed in the game?
Warriors already have plenty of gap-closing abilities, they don’t really need more.
You talk about other weapons not being viable. Wouldn’t it make more sense in that case to spent the time and resources working on making them viable instead of adding yet another weapon into the equation? A weapon that according to you would also use a completely different system than any other weapon currently in the game.

New weapons could add new playstiles, something that could actually improve the game, better than a new class if you ask me.
Polearm : the best weapon for massive battles giving the upper hand against GS/Hammer, less powerfull in small group fights.
Crossbow : long range spike ability, poor close range utility.
Whip : CC weapon with little damage, perfect for small group fights.
Boomerang : Why not ?
There are a lot of possibilities, just use the immagination

You’re right, you aren’t a developer. And thats a fact we should all be grateful for.
I would like spear to be a 2h condi weapon for warrior since they dont have one to my knowlage the only condi weapon they have is sword atm

Sorry, the argument of “There’s already things that do that, and the class doesnt need more of it” its not logical. At all. Its an MMO, diversity makes it, the option to use whatever you want makes it. Not being forced to stick with something just because it gives what you needs.
What if I don’t like old-school weapons? Should we start demanding that they add in lightsabers and laser-guns as well?
And it is not a matter of being against diversity. It is a matter of it being worth the time or resources or not.
You have to keep in mind that the game does not have a subscription and as such there is no real guaranteed income each month, thus they have to decide what they should put most money or resources into.

No. Are they still doing it ? Yeah, sure. And it probably will be much more time consuming than it’d be to design 20 or so new skill animatinos.
Something doesnt need to be extremly needed and urgent to be added to an expansion.
Which is why an expansion is an EXPANSION. Not a fix.

Then again, I dont know why we’re talking “Warriors” in this thread. I can think of AT THE VERY LEAST 4 or 5 classes that would fit well with ahving spears as a new weapon.

There is currently not a good place for guilds to meet up and do stuff together just on their own. Adding a Guild Hall will add such a thing. And as such it is adding something that does not already exist into the game. Ergo not the same thing as adding weapons that would not fill a niche that is not already filled.

They are not giving you more weapons. New weapons involve far more work than Arenanet seems willing to do.
Also Arenanet has no real reason to add new weapons when they can reuse assets and call it a new specialization. It seems to me that Arenanet is going to save things like new weapons and races as a way to string players to buy a future expansion.
Also ganging up on lordkrall.7241, doesn’t make what he said less true either. Arenanet has stated in the past their desire to reduce the amount of skill bloats. But i think it still comes down to Arenanet not wanting to put in the resource to do it.
This is an mmo forum, if someone isn’t whining chances are the game is dead.

Well, there isnt a good two-handed weapon that looks like a pole-arm for players who enjoy those weapons. And as such, it is adding that does not already exist into the game. This argument can be used to everything that isnt the game, period. We dont have mounts, thus, they could be added into the game. We dont have raids, etc etc etc.
It may not sound like it to you, but some people care a lot about wanting to use the weapon they like the most when they get into a game like an MMORPG of the size of Guild Wars.
And I’m not even speaking my own mind when I say that. lol. I love my Greatsword on my warrior and the scythe-thingy on the necromancer.

Dont make it sound like only me want them added.
If you’ve been around this forum, you know that it isnt a minority that was hoping for that. Specially after they released trailers of the weapons being used.
Dude, they’re adding new legendaries. New specs that do just what a new weapon would do (Add new skill options and build options) There just isnt argument, every expansion adds things like that. The effort to pick skins that ARE ALREDY THERE and just design a few skill animations is MINIMAL in comparsion to what they’re doing.
And unless you cant see out of your own point of view, there is A LOT of people who were expeting them to bring a new weapon. Just take a walk around forums and google it out and you’ll see.
You claim that they should only add things that are needed because of “cost-benefit” reasons, well, keeping your comunity satisfied and newcomers not-disappointed is very cost-benefficial to a MMO.
Its really FINE if you’re hyped about the expansion and doesnt want toa dmit that there are things that it lacks. I’m EXTRA hyped with the expansion, I cant wait to check out the new builds, areas, and new class… But you cant deny, the fact this game doesnt have the most common weapon in mmo’s in general is a “hole” in it.

You talk as if every class in every MMO is able to use all kinds of weapon that ever existed. Most MMO’s tie your weapon to your class, and the class options aren’t even that big to begin with, and you end up with 8~10 class/weapon choices, but here you have most weapons available independent of your class.
Demanding new weapons to be added by saying that they should have been on the game since the beginning is silly and a kittenildish, new weapons could be cool, yes, but the amount of weapons available to every class, with the exception of engineers, makes it so that you already have a lot of options.

They add new skills, something that a new class does too. I suppose we shouldn’t have a new class then, either?

Sigh.. you are clearly not even trying to understand what I am writing.
No. YOU’re not understanding what I’m writing.
I understand that you dont think a new weapon is needed because its “cost-benefit” wouldt be valid. Because you think its too much work for something that the game doesnt need right now.
and I’m telling you that an expansion isnt about bringing what the game needs only. But also EXPANDING the game. This game haves SO MUCH STUFF that it doesnt need to have, but we enjoy it anyway!
Pets, Little useless yet fun toys, Hell, I can play music I play at my guitar in it with a flute !!! These things make the game cool and colorful, make it diverse.
And being able to use pole-arms, and spears, is a BASIC in the mmo genre. Something expected to be there, unlike all this stuff.
Saying that “we dont need new weapn, so dont give us” is litterally saying “Yeah, give us the bare minimum of what the game needs to keep going!”
I’m telling you that, not only that I disagree with your opinion that " a new weapon isnt needed or wont add anything" but also I’m showing you that they’re ALREADY adding stuff that isnt needed nor is expected. Hell, we’ll be able to talk new languages, who asked for that, who needed that ?? They’re adding anyway, just cause its cool.
So, EVEN if I were to agree with you that a new weapon wouldnt add anything, it still doesnt make invalid to ask for it, and want it, and expect it, since its a weapon that its in every game out there… I’d give you reason if we were talking about scythes, or something, that arent common weapons in games. but hey, its spears. Every game haves it.
I’m sorry, after reading some of the forum posts in this, I thought I would add to this thread.
The most common weapons in MMOs are swords and staffs. If anything, the polearm is midway in the levels of common-ness of weapons (definitely not a word). This seems to me that the OP wants something rather than the community wants something (although I don’t speak on behalf of the community).
Adding a new weapon in to the game is the equivalent of adding new specialisations in to the game (essentially they are the same thing). If ANet ever reused the current spear skins for polearms or land spears, I’d think you’d find more unhappy players than happy players.
The only weapon they should add in to the game is a scythe (cough cough GW cough cough Dervish cough cough).
There is no arguments being thrown at my end ? You’re the one that eems to not be taking logic into the consideration.

i’m not claiming our current weapon choices are narrow or anything.
But just because something isnt already good, doesnt mean it cant be better, now, can it !?
It could be cool, it would be cool. People want it, it would be good advertisement to hype up the expansion, with the skins already in-game, it’d be less effort than most of what they’re already doing…
So.. Why not ? not to mention that gw1 already had those :P Its natural to expect that we’d get them too, specially with trailers and teases being released of them.

You misunderstand me..
I said that the Spears are the most comon weapons IN HISTORY!
Not in MMO’s.
But either way, they’re PRESENT in almost all MMO out there. I for one cant think of a single one that doesnt have it. (Skyrim doesnt, but that isnt a MMO, now.)
I never said they’re the most common in MMO’s, just that they’re always there.
I said they’re the most common, popular, and historical weapons of man-kind.
Why would more weapons be needed? What would they add to the game that isn’t already there?
Adding stuff just for the sake of adding it is usually not such a good idea.
Uhm, what? New weapons are one of the most badly needed things in the game. They open up build options, broaden potential character concepts, and are just plain cool. Who doesn’t want new weapon options? Plus, it’s something they’ve said they intended to do.

Just a few they could and should implement.
They add new skills, something that a new class does too. I suppose we shouldn’t have a new class then, either?
They add (very few) new skills yes. But all of those skills have added something to the professions that they didn’t have before.
A new class could easily also fill a niche that is not already filled.
They dont add “very few” new skills… they add WAY more than a new weapon would add. And I proven that up there mathematically if you’re reading my replies…
And being able to use pole-arms, and spears, is a BASIC in the mmo genre. Something expected to be there, unlike all this stuff.
Yeah, a slight misunderstanding on my part there. I apologise for that. But they could add scythes for a GW homage, we already have spears (and tridents), which is a type of polearm.
Edit: Please, I don’t want a whip as a weapon type, only my elementalist should have a whip.

We have them as underwater weapon… It gets used 10% of the gameplay through, and never ever in pvp or wvw (That are basically what you’re doing late-game aside from farming a legendary)
Nobody really cares for the underwater waepons too much, hence how n underwater precursos costs 50 gold and a 2 handed weapon precursos is usually above the 1k mark :P
I will say, I’d love spear for Ranger. A Second two handed melee weapon that might be able to compete with sword, mostly by being usable for the masses, could be pretty sweet.
Instead we’re getting staff as what appears to be yet another two handed ranged weapon, because everyone knows that the Range in Ranger means Ranged, not To Wander.

Yeah, I just seen it
Also it seems there’s no new content whatsoever aside from what they mentioned in the PAX, from what the article says at the beggining.

“Because,” or “Because they’re cool,” is not a sufficient reason to create something from nothing. There are a lot of weapons in the game. Weapons that are restricted from each of the classes. Why create whole new weapons, that also wouldn’t be universally accessible, when they can just give weapons that already exist to the classes that don’t have them.
That’s the basic thought process that ANet is using.
If you can’t justify a new weapon over an existing weapon with actual mechanics and roles missing from the lineup then there is no reason to implement it. “But I wanna,” will never be an acceptable answer.

What new content did you expect. They started the thing by saying, “Here is everything we’re going to give you.”

Read the entire post. This argument got replied to several times over, by several different people.
There’s A TON of things that are being added without the need or without really being something that “its missing” on the game’s mechanics or role lineup.
No new weapons.

They said that those are the “major” things we’re going to add, from what I remember. Not that that was all and that was it.

Yes it is sufficient reason, even if you couldn’t think of any actual positive effects on game-play, but people already have.

Stop with the complaint ‘’that should have been there from the start’‘.
If you didn’t like the game since THE START, you shouldn’t be playing today 2 years after release. Either learn to give feedback or stop posting. The whole ‘’OMG EVERYTHING SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE SINCE THE START, GW2 WORST MMO EVCER, OMG, I AM LEAVING THE GAME, OMG MY GUILD LEFT BECASUE THERE ARE NO SPEARS, OMG’’.

O_O What the … ?
When did I ever say I didnt like the game ? (The opposite, I said I love the game.)
Or when did I say I’m leaving the game because of the lack of spears ? LOL!
Still learning how to read and interpretate at school… ?
I love the game, from the start. The fact that it lacks some things doesnt mean it sucks, or that I wouldnt play the game.
As a player, and someone who paid for the game (And pai several other times for gems) I believe I have the right to express my opinion. Isnt this what the forum is for?
