Aren't you all taking this too far?
I ask you kindly to think this through again, because it makes no sense. You are saying, that the offer has the same value for both players, because just like the new player, the old player could use the code to create a brand new account with the expansion?
So in your opinion, the added value for old players in the deal is the ability to keep their progression, when upgrading the game to HoT, not being forced to start anew?
Again.. I am sure, that would you not be hell bent on defending what cannot with a sensible mindset be defended, you would realize / acknowledge the insanity of such a statement.
Its basic math, even pre-school kids should understand:
1+1 = 2
core game + expansion = two products.
2 > 1
two products is more than just the one expansion those old players would receive. All the rest of your post is just ignorance of the simple equation above. Let us know if you managed to pull your head out of the sand.
If anyone has myopia here, it’s those who cannot look beyond what they think is “being done to them” to see what is happening and what it means.
Value is determined by both sides in a transaction. The producer places a price on the product. The consumer then determines whether s/he believes the product justifies the price, then either buys or does not buy.
In this case, we have a former product, GW2 core game, and a new product, HoT. ANet has established the value for HoT by setting a price of $50. ANet has reduced the value of the core game to 0 by offering it for free with purchase. This is further evidenced by their pulling the core game from their catalog. Why not just go F2P, then? I’m not sure, but I believe it is to prevent RMT abusers from replacing banned accounts at will, and also to prevent laurel farmers from having many free accounts, thereby increasing the supply of T6 mats.
Those who bought any game that has gone F2P face a situation that has some similarities. They, by and large, complain about it, also. How much have their complaints changed?
On the other hand, ANet may listen to you. They may decide to do something to balance your “equation.” If they do, I believe it will be to restore the value of the core game by placing a price on it and divorcing it from HoT. I do not believe they will give you a price break or some other perk after they have repeatedly affirmed that the price for HoT is $50 whether you take advantage of the access to core or not.
Would that make you happy?
It’s a sale on the original game. Is it hard to wrap your head around it?
And most places aren’t going to give you an adjustment unless it’s immediately after.
Let’s entertain that idea, for your sake. Assume it is a sale.
Why is Customer A getting less value for his purchase of “Product on sale A”, than Customer B? It is not that Customer B is buying the product later, after the sale has ended.. they both buy it in exactly the same moment.
You already have the game. It’s not less value.
This is how mmos work. When an expansion comes out they give you the core game free.
Why are you so irritated that more people may play the game? So greedy and selfish.
I’ve bought the 100$ version because I feel they’ve put a lot of effort into the game and should be compensated for that.
Would I like more? Sure. More is always better but that’s the price.
Oh look it’s Jesus!

…………….ignore the fact that you get a useless copy of the original………..
You mean new players getting the original on my dime without compensation to me.
That is the issue.
You’ve been playing the game for almost 3 years for a one time purchase, there have been several major content additions free of charge since then.
All these arguments conveniently glaze over these facts because it utterly unravels your ridiculous arguments that bare no merit.
Entitled manchildren.
Not this again….
Seriously, could you please please please just learn basic economics and a bit of gaming history?
The reason why MMO games pretty much switched from subscription based models to ITEM STORE models is because the item store models brought MORE MONEY. It was not from the kindness of their hearts, the incentive was purely financial.
Most of us who bought the game way back when ALSO spent a small fortune on gems in the years we played. We were NEVER playing for free.
Also, this is not about entitlement, it’s about the simple fact that if you introduce a new class, and make that a selling point for your expansion, it verges on the indecent NOT to offer all upgrade packages 1 free character slot. Because otherwise, for us veterans the price for the expansion becomes a minimum of $50 + $10. Which is nothing more than a cheap money grab.
Blah blah blah.. I have a family to feed too.

- HoT offers the core game to any new account at no additional cost and that’s unfair to existing accounts. seems on the surface to have merit, but only if one accepts that the HoT price would be lower without the free core access. Since ANet has stated this would not be the case, this argument seems more like entitlement than logic when separated from the other issues. When you consider that tying this issue to the other issues is less likely to produce desirable results, holding onto it is unproductive and unwise. ANet has stated they will not budge on the price.
And yet it is not about entitlement. To the customer there is no visible difference between:
HOT+ free core game
and
The core game + free HOT
HOT is priced so high, that it equals the price of a full game, which makes the included free core game very suspicious. It legitimately raises a lot of eyebrows.
