From the looks of what they doing they are only going to be making the game more diverse.
Noone really went anything except 6,6,1 and within those traits there were traits that were never going to get picked. This will create more diversity as there will be more worthwhile traits to pick, I would love to see anet make a trait that competes with Elemental Attunement since there isnt a single ele that doesn’t pick this.
Also we are going to have 6 trait lines to pick from, different sub classes, (druid, ranger), and don’t forget all the new utility skills we have to pick from. After the expansion, I think it will be a lot rarer to see someone with exactly the same build, because that is very commonplace atm
Basically the OP is operating under the assumption that 1/6/1/6 will still be necessary…At this point you just do not know what %’s are on those descriptors. This looks a whole lot better than having a bunch of traits that never get used.
ps….also its about time they get rid of those roman numerals on traits!

All I hear from OP is bla bla bla I fear change. Well I welcome it. Even if I have to nit pick and change and modify my build. this is going to change the current build meta considerably. And that is fresh and I will welcome it.

The gist of this topic seems to be that you think it’s bad that your options will be mostly viable instead of mostly useless.
There’s going to be a ready up episode tomorrow where they’re going over every redone trait in the entire game so it’s useless to speculate now.

Where does it say they will go over all the changed traits? I know they will take questions but I must have missed that they will be reviewing all the changed traits.

I implore everyone to remember that the changes they discussed in the blog are SUBJECT TO CHANGE! It said so in the post. With that said, don’t expect them to go into detail about WHAT the changes will be in the stream. They might talk about HOW they plan to change traits and gear but don’t expect precise numbers or even concrete ideas.

Think about this, currently the go to build for pretty much every class is DPS. The reason for this is it’s too easy for a pure DPS build to get enough survivability while spreading out their points. If in the new system you have to sacrifice more of that survivability in order to get the best possible DPS then it will create incentive for other people to actually run a support build. As they will be needed in the team in order to make up the difference on the survivability of the DPS in the group.
This will actually make other builds viable in the system. Will this new system destroy some of the current builds? Most likely yes, and that is the beauty of it. People will be forced to come up with new builds in order to be relevant. This new system should allow more builds to be viable, rather than everyone just going straight DPS all the time.
So see, you’re just kind of looking at this all wrong my friend.
I think you are incorrect. All builds are currently viable, but only one build is optimal. That won’t change with this new system either. You’ll still have tons of viable builds, but you will still only have one optimal build. Until the goal is no longer to kill something to win, then DPS will always be king. Now, what it has the potential of doing is widening the gap between those that can play the DPS build and those that can’t. Those that can’t will be forced out of the DPS builds because they’ll be constantly dieing. Those who can will continue to do so. As I see it, the DPS herd will be thinning by forcing bads to play non-zerker builds…
I still want a gear/trait check function to know if those that are running zerker gear/builds really are. I mean, it’s obvious in fights if the entire team is running zerker or not, but harder to tell by individual.

While I have my reservations, I also feel this may be a ‘dumbing down’ a la WoW effect, I still want to see it in practice before I make further commentary. If it’s as bad as the OP makes it seem, which is entirely possible, I’ll be done with this game.
The ‘dumbing down’, or lack of choices, also made me leave Warcraft.

The main point as I see it is that this flowchart style of trait selection won’t allow players to “double up” on traits as we’ve done in the past. Slotting a Master level trait in a Grandmaster slot has been common practice because many traits are useless, non-functional, or both. Players also tend to spread out trait points, for the express purpose of maxing DPS, survivability or both, usually ending up with builds that max one line at 6, have another (or two) at 4, and a couple with 2. Sometimes going 1, 3 or 5 points is also acceptable, and even optimal based on what traits are selected.
The doubling up of certain trait tiers is one of my concerns as well. However, if done properly, this could easily become a moot point if they take say…3 adepts that are ‘standard’ in a specific build and make the one adept trait. Or even 2 as 1 adept, and the 3rd gets some tweaks and becomes a master. This opens up the ability to now add a synergetic master and grandmaster in the first example, or at least a grandmaster in the second. Until we know what’s getting axed, what’s getting merged, etc it’s hard to really get a feel for the system. There is no point in getting worked up over potentially nothing. Concerned, yes. Panties in a bunch, no. That’s my issue with the OP and many other complaint threads. The sheer overreaction when there is so much we do not know.
As for the spreading of points for dps or suvivability, same general concept. We don’t know which traits (minor or major) are simply being rolled into base functionality. We don’t know if / how many are remaining the same or how the new layout may be affected. I do agree with others in that locking us to 3 lines makes us think about 1) what we need personally a bit more (survivability vs dps for example) and 2) how we can synergize with our teammates in the most optimal fashion available.
The twitch today should be quite interesting. Sadly, I have a freaking meeting about 30 minutes in and wont be able to catch it. I freaking hate my new project

Don’t feel bad. I’m offshore and won’t be able to watch, at the earliest, until Monday or Tuesday… Maybe even Wednesday or Thursday…. or the following Saturday/Sunday at the latest.
