Unlocking this through WvW is absolute bullkitten, it only encourages karma training, the ranking up has been nerfed yet I am FULL of useless ranking points (sitting at 1,535 rank with 590 unspent points that I literally cannot spend).
In 3 hours of capping camps and towers while wanting to roam, I’ve got 17 of the Proofs of Heroics. As I have finished world completion on my main, I can only buy the maguuma scrolls.
Maguuma scrolls are 10 proofs of heroics. So in 3hrs of play I have acquired 1 Maguuma Hero challenge and almost a second. THAT IS NOT OKAY. That is not acceptable conversion from PvE to WvW.
On top of the fact that I need to spend all 400pts to get my elite skill.
It is DEPENDENT on other players (while it is absolutely not dependent on other players in PvE)
This is a flawed system. It needs to be adjusted and I won’t let people tell me it’s because I don’t wanna work to get the spec. This is unfair.

I deem the 400 Hero Points requirement to be an artificial time gate for no reason.
The elite specs which gives some fresh and fun approach to the professions that I haven’t found suitable for me to play was one of several reasons I bought HoT and wanted to play it. So my problem is not that it will take (a lot of) time to get there, but that I will have to do so by playing specs that I don’t like on some characters.
It basicly means that I have to play the way I dont like so one day I could play the way I like.
And there’s no any way around this. I can’t play the characters that I like to get those Hero Points for my other characters. I can’t get the Points via sPvP. I just forced to grind. Grind for gameplay.
I think such implementation is terribly wrong and disrespectful.

The mastery system as only been available for 15 hours. Your complaining about it being forever is just pure over dramatization. Congratulations on being awarded the William Shatner award for dramatic excellence.
First, thank you for saying, in your first sentence, my very thoughts: “It’s been less than 16 hours, and that’s ’forever?” Secondly, thanks for a smile. I’d love to see the statue that goes with that award.
I know you’re just trying to inject some levity, but in a thread full of unhappy players, a response like that is like a drunken Facebook post – if players still feel the same way a week from now, two weeks from now, about this system, you’ll never live that kind of flippancy down in the community.
First rule of dealing with complaints – you can acknowledge how a person feels about something without agreeing with them. Try it, you’ll get people on side.

i prefer pvd farming eotm over “exploring” the new maps.
Dont forget having to grind in the new maps so you can get the abilities nesecary to be able to explore in the first place…..

Thanks for poking your head into the storm while other devs have been hiding away, hopefully they are busy trying to provide reasonable solutions to this problem to folks that do not enjoy map completion
I really just hope you guys aren’t discounting the concerns of a large amount of players, such as pvpers, wvwers, fractals and dungeon runners,I for one do not like being forced out of the content I enjoy to get what I payed for.

The saddest thing of all is that many of the elite specs aren’t worth the trouble. For the amount of time & effort required they should be total game changers, but unless you’re a Necro, Mesmer or Revenant, they’re more of a novelty than a necessity.

Wow. Just wow.
First someone from aNet FINALLY comments about the grind problem with hero points after THOUSANDS of posts complaining about it, but not only do you NOT even address the problem, you actively encourage verbally putting down players that are voicing their opinions using hyperbole to make their point.
Wow. I can’t even. I’m Disgusted with that comment Gaile.
Thanks Gaile, you just confirmed my worst opinion of ArenaNet.
Of all the ways that you could choose to respond to this thread, that is pretty much the worst choice you could have made in terms of how your customers view the company.
I realise that you’re probably tired and that this thread is harshing your launch day buzz but I’m afraid that’s not a valid excuse for being snarky to your customers. And if you think this thread has kittened you off, just try to imagine that we feel very much the same about the issues raised in it.

Wow. so basically the official word is that the many many pages of people who are complaining about this should just shut up? Also confirming that people who have played for 16 hrs still shouldn’t have their elites unlocked? Well that just kittens me off.

That is not what she said. I don’t consider the negative reaction to what was said to be inappropriate but you do not need to misrepresent what she did say in order to make your point.

Playing the game is not a grind, you are not repeating a process again and again, there is thought put into the content.
What do you want, to just afk in lions arch or what?

For all 40 its definitely gonna take most people, probably 30 hours?
For 20, if you already had 200, and had played/sploiled the beta some people I think have finished in about 15-16 hours.

Would’ve loved to see it being 200 heropoints and that HoT heropoints were worth 5 points each. That way you could chose to do Tyria OR HoT map completions to unlock your elite spec.

This is Anet’s version of a new level cap without having to add more levels. Forces everyone to dabble in the new zones and/or aspects of the game.

I think thats an unfair inference on OPs part to say that the grind is officially 16+ hours, my concern is the fact the dev seems to discount the player reaction to their implementation. I have had great experiences with guild wars customer service in the past, I really hope it was a non-serious type post and that the devs are really looking into making the elite specs more reasonable to get than by doing the map completion nonsense.

I think most of you guys are being a bit over dramatic… i don’t see why needing a bit time to get the specialization is that wrong.
When you first start a game most the content is locked, this is no different than any other content, people that buys the game today for the first time don’t even have access to the maguma jungle because they need level 80, using the same logic they all should just start at level 80.
Please, at least try to be a lit bit more realistic, no one will need one year to get the full specialization, don’t be over dramatic, you don’t need to complete the whole mastery set to be able to reach the hero points, all we need is a couple of levels to unlock the glider and some other systems, and your set for all your characters.
I’m pretty sure that once the dust settles a lot of people will be able to get 400 points in a blink of eye.

Ok, done some farming of hero points in WvW and here are the results:
- Time spent: 4h.
- Way spended: Pure PvD optimized farming (karma train, killing all guards, trying always to get catas or rams…).
- Bonus: I have the celebration bonus which gives +100% WvW experience.
- Hero points gained: 41.
Doing maths, I should need 80h per character of pure PvD farming, or 40h with WvW experience boost.
I need to get, at least, 2 full elite specializations, which will require more than 80h of pure farming (since I only have 3 celebration boosters). I’ve played about 2500h since the game started, so I need to spend nearly 4% of the time I’ve spent in this game in intensive PvD farming to be able to use skills and traits.
This is blatantly ridiculous and there’s no way this can be considered character progression.

I don’t understand the reasoning behind the soulbound 400 hero point grind. It’s not a challenge, it’s a time gate. That you have to repeat over and over and over. You are forced to play in ways you don’t want to for long periods of time, just to get to play how you want. You have already sold us on the expansion, with elite specialisations people were looking forward to playing, why are we being punished for buying what you sold us? Seems arbitrary and completely unneccessarily. We already have the mastery tracks we can spend our time working on, why time-gate the elite specs? I can not understand the decision making here. And especially not when it’s soulbound, it’s not even that it’s not “alt-friendly”, it’s extreme even two characters. Please fix this ASAP.

I don’t think 40 hours is too bad (I know your example is with a booster) to max out the spec. I’d be happy with that – it’s pretty much what a traditional MMO would have you do to obtain ten levels.

Myself – ive read around, ive not been able to play today because of lag and it seems that slow though it will be my best bet is to gather enough Hero points in WvW then move into the Jungle only when I have enough to at least be able to move around the map with Glider and Mushroom help as vertical maps tied to content blocks dependant on hero points locked within said maps is a total turn off to me.
People should be able to move around without having to cover most of the expansions maps to be able to become the spec they want to play as – crikey even WoW wouldn’t pull this sort of rubbish.

45€ for this frustrating experience? First I don’t know who thought making us play IN A VERTICAL MAP THAT REQUIRES A GLIDER, without a glider was a good idea, I punched my table 2-3 times before I got a glider.
Second, 400 hero points to unlock elite specs that I can’t even just play the game mode I enjoy for? I gotta do these kittenty hero challenges for it, which I have done 80% in the first 2 zones and got 20% elite spec unlocked. Are you serious? I don’t wanna farm the same events (go here and kill mobs because that hasn’t been done before in this game) over and over, just want my elite spec so I can go WvW

Time should be counted as 80h, since 40 is with 2 celebration boosters spent (which is something not everybody has, neither you can buy).
But the worst thing is pretty much the optimized time in perfect PvD farming, which is not like dungeon farming. If your server doesn’t have a blob capping everything, or if eotm theres no karma train when you connect, needed time gets increased alarmingly.
For example, with roaming it’s arguably impossible.

This is the main problem. I started with 100 points, so 300 to go. The mastery system is taking FOREVER and it just feels like a completely boring grind.

The original poster was complaining that the hero points needed to unlock elites took far too long because in its current form it’s tied in with mastery and that you basically need to run around all the new HoT content while still using old specs. The mastery system is just fine and yes you need things to shoot for, but unlocking elites was not discussed in advance as requiring very long times to access and Gaile gray’s post implies people who have a problem with long grind for their basic elite skills and traits are in some way just silly.

Gaile said, essentially, that 16 hours is not forever. Unless you are attempting to claim that there is no number higher than 16 you have no leg to stand on for that point.
The rest of it, though, yeah. Bad form.

So I ran around HoT maps with my ranger, looking for pets. I ran into a few skill challenges and for the most part you need a group to complete them. Right now thats fine as people are running around like mad grinding them out, but what happens when that slackens. Are we supposed to beg in map chat for help with simple hero challenges. This is worse than I had feared. Really, what were you people thinking? Take away the excellent art team and this game is nothing, because if this game wasnt as pretty as it is, more and more people would be leaving.

It is a thankless job and as the forum ‘face’, you’re going to be the pinata. There’s no response that will make everyone happy and it’s not in your power to make the sort of decisions that will make people happy. I do understand, I’m engaged to a game dev who has as you can imagine interactions with community people.
But on the other side of the coin myself, as just someone who plays games and has read a lot of forums over the years, humour is just misplaced as the first thing to use when players are complaining in these numbers. It just says to the readers that you took the time to read the posts but didn’t think they were worth addressing. And perception is everything, not what you intended.

Gaile gray’s post implies people who have a problem with long grind for their basic elite skills and traits are in some way just silly.
But… all the complaints are silly. The common denominator for all of them is “I don’t want to play to unlock this, I want it now.” Anet Devs said previously that they pay attention to legitimate complaint posts, the ones that actually provide constructive feedback. And they take that feedback and make changes to the game.
Edit – Somewhere buried in the forums, Colin or MO actually gave examples of changes they made based on player feedback.

This is my biggest turn off for the expansion, can’t play what I payed for. Only reasonable way to get hero points is through hero challenges, challenges that are gated by masteries, masteries that require you to mindlessly farm events for days doing the same thing over and over? Then most hero challenges require you to kill something, something that 2 shots you and requires more players. So I’m dependent on other players to progress my character on the first day of the expansion? Not to mention I couldn’t even figure out where half the challenges were. Didn’t know if I just couldn’t find them or needed a mastery. I’m sorry but this has got to be the worst set of developer choices ever made.
But it’s ok guys, we got gliders, yay…for 45€

How about instead of just being in PVE open world content, on top of that, they allow more efficient ways to get Hero Points in SPVP reward tracks, Fractal rewards, from dungeons, from wvw that doesn’t require a year of playing to get 1 spec line…. etc…
People should be able to play how they want and not be penalized by not being able to obtain a core part of something that they PAID a decent amount of money for.

No, you don’t understand the frustration, the problem is forced map completion, which to many players is a grind because they play different game modes. And even many who enjoy map completion would like to enjoy the new zones as the elite specs.
All the elitist attitudes of: “well you better work hard” on a game is ridiculous. Most players are here to have fun, not get frustrated because they are gated from enjoying a core part of the game.
Jobs in real life are for hard work, a game is for relaxation, fun with friends, and get what you payed for, not a frustration bucket. As a primarily wvw and pvp player I was banging my head against my desk just trying to figure out the new zone, not even getting hero points yet, because it took me so long and I was so frustrated at the specs being locked behind masteries on top of map completion which I hate. (there is a reason the most map completion I have on any character is 20%.)

This design paradigm is a complete failure. It is reasonable to want to play the expansion content with the elite specs rather than having to play through so much of it using our old specs.

Example:
Simply play the game. HoT is an expansion that offers new skills. Logically, your character would need to learn and master the new skills, not just walk around and instantly become Elite. If you really want to get those new skills, you gotta earn them.

First, thank you for saying, in your first sentence, my very thoughts: “It’s been less than 16 hours, and that’s ’forever?” Secondly, thanks for a smile. I’d love to see the statue that goes with that award.
It been just over 18 hours and I’ve unlocked everything I wanted for my main including the GM I intend to use. Needed one mastery level of gliding and one mastery level of mushroom bounce. Still trying to pick some ‘low-hanging fruit’ Hero Challenges, but basically I’m good to go anywhere.
Day one Dragonhunter. I can live with it. Still need another 90 points for the armor/runes, but I don’t plan to use either so that’s just showing off .

I hope I can do the original content like it was released before it gets nerfed because of all the whining.

~20 hours if you already have 200 pts
closer to 30- 40 hours if you’re a rev or don’t do world map completion…
Earn them yes…after like ~8 hours. I have 10 characters. I am not spending ~300+ hours getting them all their elites…
There should be reasonable alternatives to having to do the map completion, you can level to 80 through essentially every other game mode (tomes in pvp, levelling in wvw etc..) and unlock essentially anything you want by playing the game mode of your choice.
I think the people saying “well duh its progression” don’t realize that it is more or less frustration to people who don’t enjoy map completion content. And the wvw alternative is even worse with how slow it is.

The common denominator is not “I don’t want to play to unlock this,” its “I don’t want to grind masteries for 20+ hours and burn through new PvE content to enjoy the rest of the game with new elite specs,” such as dungeons, fractals, wvw, etc.
Only because playing the content has somehow become ‘grind’. I’ve spent my time taking part in events, earning rewards and my masteries level as a result. Is that not how it’s meant to work? If I was going to get everything maxed as soon as the game went live, or in the 20+ hours quoted, I’d have seen it as an epic waste of money as imo a game is there to be played over a long period of time. I don’t care that I’ve not maxed my Reaper traits and all masteries in one day, means there’s more stuff for me to do tomorrow. No one’s putting a gun to anyone’s head and saying ‘sit there for however long it takes and don’t move until these things are maxed’. If you’re bored of working on traits, do some Halloween, do some fractals, do some WvW. It’s not like there’s a shortage of stuff to do in game (or out of it and trust me, there is an outside world!).

Sorry but that’s what, 18 hours plus world map completion? soo…how many hours again?
And honestly, even if it was 18 hours for all 40 (which it isnt even close)…I have 10 chars….180 hours to unlock all my elites?! And in reality its way more than that without any world completion.

I’m mostly okay with the way it’s set up with one big complaint. I have an 80 of each profession and I can only even start using the new weapon on the two I have done map completion on. That’s…a little insane to me. I play a lot. Too much probably. And 2? We should at least be able to use the new weapon to start using the spec right away. Even if we have to earn the traits and utility skills. But to be forced to grind out hero points on every character to even begin to use the new specs is just a little too much, I think. I’m not saying the system is broken, but it needs some tweeks.

I’ve had 3 years to work on world completion, and 9+ months knowing it’d be relevant — thought actually I picked up about 55 points in the last 2 days.
I’ll likely look around a little longer today and start getting my Daredevil worked up while the maps are still flooded with people.

wow, are you people that are defending this just stupid? How did you level up and get points when game came out? oh yea, it was through random dynamic events, hearts, story, you had variety. This is nothing but grind the same boring escort and defense events over and over.
