I have just reached 80 on my first toon. I have about 53% world completion. Will any experience that I earn now (doing world exploring) go towards masteries later? or should I just stow my character away and play an alt, because that exp will go to waste?

Only once HoT launches will your experience earned start to contribute towards masteries. So it is up to you whether or not you want to do the map completion now, as there will be several other ways to earn experience for masteries once they release, so there is no issue in completing it if you want to.

All of the experience currently earned past level 80 is going to waste until HoT releases.

On the other hand if map completion gives mastery points, then completing maps will retroactively deliver you more points for the start of HoT.

But yeah, I’m not working on any maps other than getting hero points now, since there will be greater rewards for it in the expansion.

Sort of, yes, but only ‘pact tyria mastery points’.
